Even as we study the lifelike surface of this head, its expression may lead us to contemplate the psychic life at play behind the closed eyes. The sculptor Isamu Noguchi modeled this likeness of his uncle Takagi, a Buddhist priest, in gratitude for his hospitality during the artist's visit to Tokyo In 1931. One of three casts from the original clay sculpture, the head suggests the "closed-eye vision" achieved through meditation.

After being rundown for some years, Isamu Noguchi's 1976 sculpture/playground has been restored! Quite the coolest playground in town (and the only Noguchi playground in the country).

I did the spiral slide today at the rededication -- you know, for work.

I really love this combination of stone and water.

イサムの表現するつくばい、本当に大好きです。水の伝わる音まで作品の一部になっているような気がします。写真ではなくそのものを体感するのが一番だと思う作品。

The Noguchi Museum (original warehouse, 1929; Isamu Noguchi and Shoji Sadao, mainly 1982-1983, with garden installed in 1985). Formerly Noguchi's studio, this is probably one of my favorite archi-spots in NYC: a reliably calming and absorbing visit, whatever the current exhibits are. I don't think I can really say too much of interest about the design itself, though I think the primary concrete-block addition is a great neutral foil for Noguchi's stone sculptures, and does lovely things with indoor/outdoor continuity. It's just really nice!

From the Noguchi Museum, Long Island City. It was very late when I arrived for an event. I only had time for a night stroll through the garden, which made surprisingly gentle sound of gravel in the dark. Queens, NY.
