Sunny days are quite rare in the beginning of this winter. And the good light is always an invitation for me.
Thank you for all the comments and favs, my dear followers and friends.
To the wild wood and the downs
To the silent wilderness
Where the soul need not repress
Its music lest it should not find
An echo in another’s mind.

Plump, well-camouflaged shorebird that blends into wet meadows and marshes. Dark and heavily marked, with pale buffy stripes on back and face. Extremely long bill used to probe into mud for invertebrates. Similar in shape to American Woodcock but much darker with extensive markings on underparts. Fairly common and widespread throughout North America, wintering to northern South America. Found in muddy wetlands, flooded fields, and marshes, usually singly but sometimes gathering in loose groups. When flushed, listen for rough call note. On breeding grounds, watch and listen for aerial flight display, given day and night: a rapid series of hoot-like noises produced by the outer tail feathers in flight. (eBird)

With its cryptic plumage and preference for grassy muddy areas, these snipe can be very hard to find. I have found, however, that a particular line of fence poles along the road at Carden Alvar are the favourite spot for these birds and most of my best snipe photos come from this location. On this day it was quite windy and he was trying to keep his feathers under control.

Plant and they will come!
This is just a record shot (I'd have liked to have gotten more of the wing in focus), as she wasn't for staying still, of the first common blue butterfly to visit my garden last year, after I planted bird's foot trefoil for my 'resident' leafcutter bees, and to attract common blue butterflies.
I was thrilled to watch her lay lots of eggs, which you can see her doing in this photo, all over the bird's foot trefoil ... and what amazing little structures the eggs are too---that's tomorrow's upload!
Another image from the pear tree crocus shoot, the second offering using the Flektogon vintage lens. This lens creates lovely bokeh, though I need to say that part of the effect here is due to processing using Nik Color Efex. The sharp bits are the lens though.
The view here is cropped to about 60% of the full-frame to get rid of some of the more distracting elements. Otherwise it’s a straightforward macro with a still camera… I’m just checking I can still do those, you understand ;)
Happy Mittwochsmakro!
Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Macro Wednesday :)
We often hear the “Savior” characteristics of God stressed – His love, mercy, goodness and so on – but the matter of His lordship is absent. The distortion is particularly clear in evangelism. In modern practice the call to repentance is usually called an “invitation,” which one can obviously accept or refuse. It is offered politely. Seldom do we hear presented God’s sovereign demand to repent or His demand for total submission to the authority of His appointed king, Christ Jesus. - Alistar Begg

A plain, chunky bird with a “big mouth.” Found in foothill rainforest of western Ecuador and western Colombia. It’s mostly olive-brown with pale eyes and a stout bill. Forages at middle levels of the forest and may join mixed-species flocks. Sings incessantly early in the morning, giving loud whistles intermixed with scratchy twitters and squeaks. It can open its beak surprisingly wide while singing, giving the impression that it’s shouting. (eBird)

I've been going through my photo archive, updating names based on the latest taxonomy. As part of that work, I've come across photos that I've never processed or posted (usually because they were too grainy, fuzzy, etc.). New editing tools, though, have meant that a few will now see the light of day, like this one. Taken in the early hours of the morning by a less than perfect camera, it finally comes to light after some heavy duty editing.
Note: I had originally ID'd this bird as a South American Leaftosser (which is very similar to this). When I posted it on eBird, the reviewer got back to me almost immediately with a correction. Oh well, still a lifer and still the one and only time I've seen this bird.
