Stop the War Coalition protest at Parliament against NATO intervention in Libya 19.04.2011
Around sixty protesters gathered at Downing Street today to protest the continuing NATO bombing campaign in Libya, claiming that the action has gone beyond the terms of UN Resolution 1973 (2011), and to also protest against the joint declaration made this week by President Barack Obama, France's Nicolas Sarkozy and Britain's David Cameron which openly states that the outcome should now be regime change, which Stop the War points out is completely illegal under international law.
If NATO and the United Nations really cared about the humanitarian needs of the Libyan civilian population, say Stop the War, then the African Union's proposal of a ceasefire followed by negociations should have been tried instead of being instantly sidelined by the US, Britain and France. At the time it was proposed almost three weeks ago, the Gaddafi regime claimed they would abide by it - an offer now withdrawn as NATO's bombardment and the appearance of British "Military Advisers" and the promise of £25 million of second-hand vehicles and body armour from the Allies looks set to prolong the misery of this civil war.
The involvement of the Arab League as NATO's regional ally is very troubling too, as it is composed entirely of several despotic regimes guilty of torture and murder which have all recently violently crushed attempts at revolution by their own populations, yet where were the NATO planes when the Bahrainis needed help as they were being slaughtered on the streets by over a thousand Saudi Arabian troops donated by the House of Saud to help their cousins out?
Instead we are incredulously asked to believe that suddenly the Arabs suddenly care about the democratic dreams of the Libyans, when they have recently slaughtered so many of their own people for demanding exactly the same. The bitter truth is that this hypocrisy is all about Western power, the stability of Western oil supplies and its continuing influence in the region.
Several British MPs are also very unhappy with the sudden change in the mission from "Humanitarian Relief" to "Regime Change" and are trying to have Parliament recalled from its' Summer Recess to urgently debate British involvement in what is now materially aiding one side of a civil war, regardless of the violent reprisals being carried out by Gaddafi. NATO commanders have already admitted they can't do much more now that Gadaffi's troops are dug in on the streets and buildings of Misrata (for example), in amongst the suffering, terrified civilian population. Yet again we are about to see a vicious guerrilla war take place. The West, as usual, thought that it'd be "Mission Accomplished" after a couple of days bombing to teach that Mad Dog a lesson, and yet again the terrible truth is nothing of the sort.
The only solution to Libya's problem can be a Libyan-brokered solution, they claim, and whilst it is absolutely heart-breaking to see all the footage coming out of Libya of the terible price being paid by the civilian population because of this conflict inspired by events in Egypt, NATO's involvement is prolonging the violence and the bloodshed.
Several Libyan pro-rebel groups based in London are furious at Stop the War's position, accusing them of betrayal and they are demanding more and more NATO attacks and weapons to help them win their civil war against Gaddafi's regime.
The appearance of several small plain green flags amongst the Stop the War placards suggests that the demo was infiltrated by openly pro-Gadaffi supporters - probably Libyan Embassy staff - and this did nothing to support Stop the War's statement that they do not support either side in this conflict, as the pro-rebel groups are now claiming that Stop the War supports Gaddafi, which is certainly not the case.
"The long-term solution to Libya's conflict", says Stop the War, "will not be delivered from the bomb bay doors of a NATO bomber."

This intervention refers to the concrete arches commonly known as `Andropov’s Ears` which were situated at the magnificent socialist boulevard where all the official parades used to pass by. Today the image has changed radically. The arches have been destroyed after the fall of the Soviet empire and while the square in front of it is renovated, underneath the street level a big pile of rubble still remains. It is visible by passing through a huge underground passage, part of the modernist socialist urban planning, which today looks quite rundown but is still in use. But has the image of the space really changed by only demolishing the arches? I wanted to point at the collective memory connected to that place. What if Andropov was still listening there? With my intervention I wanted to create an after image of the past. The reincarnation of the former Soviet structure was shaped with plastic bottles, a typical waste product of contemporary consumerism.

* DESCRIPTION *
Das Graue Wunder is a two parts satirical intervention based on the controversial construction of the Waldschlösschen bridge, a highway bridge through the Elbe Valley which brought as a consequence in 2009 the unregistration of this site from UNESCO World Heritage List in which it was included since 2004.
The first part of the intervention is a wallpaper pasted into a photo booth installed in Rosmaringasse, Altstadt in Dresden city center, just near the UNESCO billboard announcing the reasons why Elbe Valley was removed from the World Heritage List. The poster shows a vertical image of the bridge and designed in a way that UNESCO logo and text « Das Graue Wunder » appears as a background of each portrait picture taken with this photo booth.
The second part of the intervention is a banner with UNESCO logo and text « Das Graue Wunder » installed at one corner of the Waldschlösschen bridge, mimetic to the six ones from Sächsische Bau GMBH company which were installed on the bridge since its building was completed at the end august 2013.
« Das Graue Wunder » is the ironic nickname given to the bridge by the citizens of Dresden who were protesting against the construction. This nickname is an echo to « Das Blaues Wunder », the Loschwitzer bridge built in 1893 upstream and nicknamed in that way according an urban legend which claims that the Loschwitzer bridge was originally painted green, but that the weather turned it blue. In addition, the name is a pun, since the meaning of the phrase ein blaues Wunder erleben is « to experience an unpleasant surprise » (Wikipedia).
Das Graue Wunder intervention is playing with viral communication in the field of territorial marketing to highlight the disagreement of citizens within a situation where functionality overrides on cultural heritage.
