Illustrating how it is impossible to shoot snowdrops while walking the dog..

Bavona Valley, which branches off from the Maggia Valley, is characterized by its wilderness. To this day it is deprived of electricity (except in San Carlo) and populated only during the summer. The magic of nature combined with the work of mankind has bestowed peace and harmony to this valley, one of Ticino’s most beautiful. Consisting of extremely high cliffs and remains of colossal landslides it is also one of the steepest and rockiest valleys of the entire Alpine region. An enchanting walk that goes through twelve villages, including Foroglio with its spectacular waterfall, allows the visitor to appreciate its charm.

The route is fascinating not only from an environmental point of view but also for the testimonials of human intervention found along the way, that prove how through an adequate interpretation of the territory it is possible to turn even the most hostile of natural elements into an ally. Very interesting are the so-called splüi, buildings under the rock that have made it possible to adapt nature to the needs of humans, creating shelters, housing and stables. Also very surprising is the ingenuity behind the transformation of the upper part of massive boulders into small gardens, protected from the voracious goats that stroll about the valley.

The itinerary that runs through the entire Bavona Valley can start either in Bignasco or in Cavergno. Along the course you will encounter a number of splüi and go through woods of chestnut trees - once considered to be "the tree of life" because of its vital role for the survival of the population. In Foroglio, the best known village of the valley because of the spectacular waterfall, you can spot a few houses with a wide arcade and a number of torbe gathered around a small church. Inside the church, you can admire the interesting altar from the 16th century. Also in town, the excellent Grotto Froda (a tavern) that offers traditional Ticino dishes and is run by Martino Giovanettina, a local intellectual.

Another point of interest is the centre of Sonlerto, where to avoid taking land from the pastures the houses were built between the boulders of a prehistoric landslide. The graceful oratory of Gannariente, with precious frescoes from the 16th century, has been a destination from time immemorial of a historical procession that occurs the first Sunday of May. The excursion ends in San Carlo, the last village of the Bavona Valley and departure point of the cableway that goes up to Robiei (below the Basodino glacier). From there you may choose to return by bus to Bignasco or Cavergno.

First diesel electric locomotive of the 1Co+Do+Co1 (1-3-0 + 0-4-0 + 0-3-1) class named firstly JuE002 (Юэ002) and later Shch-el-1 (Щ-ЭЛ-1) and Ge1 (Гэ1 - after name of designer, Y. M. Gakkel) was designed by Yakov Modestovich Gakkel and Alexander Sergeevich Raevsky and built in Soviet Russia by the Putilov Plant and the Baltic Shipyard in Petrograd (St. Petersburg). As the prime mover has been used 1000 hp 4 stroke 10 cylinder Vickers diesel presumably salvaged from a British submarine lost in the Baltic in 1919 during The Intervention. The electric generator was also of submarine type but were made in Italy. Traction motors were PT-100 (ПТ-100), 100 kW each. Curiously, the locomotive was seriously damaged during the Great flood of Petrograd in 1924. It career was very short it worked on a railway during 1925-27 yy and from 1934 has been used as mobile power plant. In contrast to the JuE002, the competitive project JuE001 (Юэ001) built in Germany under Lenin decision designed by another famous Russian railway engineer, Yury Lomonosov had more prolonged usage up to 1954 y. JuE001 Diesel-electric locomotive class E el-2 (Ээл2) had 1′Eo1′ configuration, 1200 hp MAN diesel and 800 kW electric motors.

The JuE002 now is exposed in the Russian Railways Museum in St. Petersburg.

Another great sculpture at the Swell Sculpture festival. artist statement: In the early 1960's, due to the whaling industry, there were estimated to be fewer than 200 Humpback whales migrating along the east coast of Australia. Now with the help from various conservation organisations and public awareness, there are estimated to be over 20.000.

In 1998, Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s directors Donovan Zimmerman and Jan Burger met and began a collaboration of epic proportions. Since then, 25 years ago, they have been using papier-mâché, cardboard, bamboo, your old house paints, cloth, and other assorted junk (treasure to us!) to create incredible giant puppets, masks, shadow plays and spectacle performances for all ages.

Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s mission is to use diverse styles of puppetry and artistic expression to create works that inspire, promote social change and are deeply rewarding for all involved. These styles include: giant puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppetry, masks, stilt dancing and anything under the sky that strikes our fancy.

Our vision is inspired by our love for the earth and its creatures (including humans). We will synthesize many art forms including, but never limited to, sculpting, painting, dance, music, improvisation, costume design, set design and theater. We are committed to creating multi-scaled and multi-disciplinary puppet performances that support this vision.

They perform at various venues throughout North Carolina from August till late September.

On this day in 173 AD, or 172, or not even on this day at all, but a different day (the sources are contradictory and a bit imprecise and to be honest it doesn’t really matter… I just wanted an excuse to post some photos) the Roman army of Emperor Marcus Aurelius defeated and subdued a much larger force of Quadi in what become known as the ‘Miracle of the Rain’. The event, which took place in Marcus’ first Marcomannic War, is depicted on the Aurelian Column, which was completed in 193, and contemporaries and historians attributed it to divine intervention. Cassius Dio stated that it was called by an Egyptian magician praying to Mercury, while Christian writers such as Tertullian attributed it to a prayer by Christians.

The Southern Highway or Route CH-7 is the most impressive Scenic Route in South America and one of the 10 most spectacular in the world. It is born in the city of Puerto Montt, covering more than 1,240 kilometers, in its route crosses several times the Andes mountain range, bordering along the coast and the fjords of the Western Patagonia, soon to be entered in the evergreen austral forests, approaching to numerous glaciers, great lakes and the Northern Ice Fields to finish in Villa O'Higgins, a few kilometers from the big Southern Ice Field.

This long road was born as a path of colonization in the twentieth century, when the Chilean Patagonia was completely isolated from the rest of the territory. The only connection was traveling through Argentine territory. Its first stretches began to be constructed in 1930 to support the incipient colonization, mainly in Palena and Aysen, being isolated efforts with little continuity during the following decades. Only in 1976 the Chilean State resumes its construction in order to reaffirm the territorial sovereignty. In charge of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and with the help of the Military Corps of Labor, an organization dependent on the Chilean Army, more than 10,000 soldiers worked in the most expensive and difficult engineering work in Chile, mainly due to the extreme climate, existence of glaciers, fjords, mighty rivers and impassable mountains that complicated the layout of the road. It took 20 years to complete the route to Villa O'Higgins, costing U$ 300 million and killing countless military and contractors. The project in total intends to unite all the Chilean Patagonia arriving until Port Williams in Tierra del Fuego completing more than 4,000 kms. It is expected that the southern section in Tierra del Fuego currently under construction will be completed by 2023. Estimates say that the entire highway could be completed and paved by 2040 (!). Which means that the total construction will have taken 60 years.

In 2007 the northern section began to be paved, it was estimated that by 2017 70% would be completed, but climatic, technical and geographical difficulties impede progress. At present little more than 400 km are effectively paved, remaining the rest as a gravel road suitable for all types of vehicles with large number of jobs in all sections. In the summer of 2017, the stretch between Puerto Yungay and Puerto Natales was continued with the commissioning of the Crux Australis ferry barge, which connects the Austral Highway and the Torres del Paine Park, bypassing the Southern Ice Field on an 41 hrs incredible voyage through channels and fjords.

Despite all the difficulties nowadays it is a tourist route of growing interest for travelers and adventurers from all over the world who want to explore the wild Patagonian beauty. It is estimated that the flow of tourists in the last years has grown by 600%. The new tourist enterprises and agencies are multiplying each year. Especially the fishing lodge and Adventure Tourism. As new stretches open, new natural attractions are added, making the Carretra Austral an inexhaustible source of unforgettable experiences having the possibility of being in contact with a nature in its most primitive and wild state without the human intervention.

“I do not like it.

The situation is all but under control. Nothing could spoil this harvest save one circumstance...

The she-human must be relieved of the she-spy's gatemaking device before she learns of its existence, or as soon as possible...whichever comes first. I trust you will impress upon the target replacer the importance of discretion, Commander.”

“Of course, Your Majesty. It will be confiscated while she is in the unconscious state the humans call 'sleep'.”

Tomorrow we're leaving this desert...

“Good night, Reldan. Are you going to sleep?”

“I was going to keep watch; I'm not too tired yet. Good night, Quane.”

Clearing a space in the sand...curling into a ball...ahhhhhh.

Wha-

What the...my bag is moving...Reldan?

“Reldan? What are you doing?”

“Aaaaaugh! Nothing...”

“Were you...searching through my stuff?”

“No, not searching, no. I wanted some water.”

He's holding something small and black...hiding it from me? He's not supposed to keep any secrets from me...

“What's that?”

My now-piqued curiosity outstretches an arm and sends my fingers probing toward the object he's trying to hide behind his back.

“Please, I don't want you to hide things from me; you can trust me...Reldan!”

He tries to back away but I move toward him and he unbalances, dropping it.

“No!”

Light-a rectangle of light?

Yes-springing out of the black device. I walk over to look.

“Come back, Quane, it's dangerou-”

Arms sprout from the glowing polygon and grab at me...my legs...IT'S GOT ME AAAAAUUUUUGHHHH

Reldan is rushing forward to help me, but...it's too late.

I'll be honest, I don't like having to doll up the photos this much. Seems sort of like cheating. Regardless, there won't be any more glowing mushrooms to edit in the future, hopefully...

Besides the usual complaints about my self-inflicted post-production torments, I genuinely hope this does not confuse you. It is not meant to; I'm beginning to wrap up the story arc.

I strive to give to others a sense of sacredness, because an art event is not just a formal fact but also a moment where you put a mark on your dedication. You must have a feeling of joining a tribe where there is the stick of command, because you are in a sacred place with its rules…

Complete with a Collapsible Stock and a working Bolt Action system!

This gun is Number #3, and Day Three.

I was of course inspired to make this gun by Infiiniy Ward's epic First Person Shooter - Modern Warfare 2.

When I got MW2 on PS3, the first thing I did was go on Multiplayer. I, as you may know, am an exceptionally accurate marksman, and with this being both an early unlock sniper and a bolt action rifle, it locked itself into my heart. It seriously owned anyone in the crosshairs. Just some timing and a quick trigger finger could net you some epic headshots.

With this mod, I really wanted to take my modificaions to the next level, and I have done so by making both a working Bolt Action and a Collapsible stock. I really feel that it works really nicely.

Thanks, and enjoy!

The Palazzo Medici (later Medici Riccardi) was the symbol of the economic power of the Medicis who were the virtual lords of Florence in the 16th-17th centuries.

In 1659 Ferdinando II de' Medici (1610-1670), the Grand Duke of Tuscany, sold his family's venerable and imposing palace, built by Michelozzo in the fifteenth century, to Gabriello Riccardi (1606-1675) and his nephew Francesco Riccardi (1648-1719).

The Riccardi family had moved to Florence from Cologne in the fourteenth century, and in the sixteenth century attained great wealth from banking and commerce.

A number of architects contributed to the remodeling of the palace which took thirty years. The most spectacular intervention into the original building was the construction, beginning in 1670, of an east-west gallery wing. In 1676 the library was built directly beside the gallery. In 1684-89 another new wing was built to the north.

The new owners' pride in the tradition-rich history of their palace is expressed in the painted decoration of the newly created rooms. In the Great Hall of the building, called the Gallery (Galleria Riccardiana), the ceiling was covered by frescoes in 1683-85 by the Neapolitan painter Luca Giordano, in order to show off the glories of the Medici family.

Baroque civilization entered Florence with Pietro da Cortona in Palazzo Pitti and with Luca Giordano in Palazzo Medici Riccardi (1683-85).

Leonardo da Vinci (Anchiano, April 15, 1452 - Amboise, May 2, 1519) - Studies of the hind legs of a horse (around 1508) - Red stone and traces of black stone on paper - Biblioteca Reale, Turin

In this vibrant drawing, Leonardo focuses his attention on the study of the horse's hind legs but it is also possible to recognize a probable reworking intervention by Francesco Melzi, the master's favorite pupil and his collaborator, who accompanies Leonardo on his trip to France in 1517. staying close to him until his death.

I know they are working out the kinks and everything, but I just had the notion to make this. I used a few highlighters. Perhaps I need help too.

I heard on the late news last night that there was a submarine parked at Canada place. Well it's only a short walk to get there from where I live. I thought I might be able to get some interesting shots.

Today the rains have returned.

It happens every year. I wait eagerly for my peonies to bloom - they do - rain comes immediately and wipes them out! So, a yearly intervention is in order - the fluffiest, most vulnerable of the lot are clipped and brought in for a few more days of enjoyment before they are completely drowned!

Physical interventions on a negative shot with an medium format film camera. Circles punched out and rearranged before scanning. Expired film processed in exhausted chemicals.

Every beginning has an end - every end is the beginning of something new. That is a beautiful fact as it supplies us with life, change and diversity. While the natural order of things is convincing, the intervention of the human species does not always provide us with a logical outcome.
