In this crowded starfield covering over 2 degrees within the high flying constellation Cygnus, the eye is drawn to the Cocoon Nebula. A compact star forming region, the cosmic Cocoon punctuates a long trail of obscuring interstellar dust clouds. Cataloged as IC 5146, the nebula is nearly 15 light-years wide, located some 4,000 light years away. Like other star forming regions, it stands out in red, glowing, hydrogen gas excited by the young, hot stars and blue, dust-reflected starlight at the edge of an otherwise invisible molecular cloud. In fact, the bright star near the center of this nebula is likely only a few hundred thousand years old, powering the nebular glow as it clears out a cavity in the molecular cloud's star forming dust and gas. But the long dusty filaments that appear dark in this visible light image are themselves hiding stars in the process of formation that can be seen seen at infrared wavelengths. via NASA 1.usa.gov/1tte04H

Interstellar dust

The Orion region is an interesting part of the universe. Astronomers begin their first observations here. The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 and IC434) is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion. The nebula is located in Old Alnitk, at the end of the Orion belt, and is part of the larger Orion molecular cloud complex. It is about 1,500 light-years from Earth. The Horsehead Nebula is one of the most famous nebulae in the sky. It is about five light years high. The interstellar dust is classified as Barnard 33. It is visible only because the dust covers the emission nebula IC 434. This object gives a fascinating picture to the observer. Objects are nice to see. It is nice to see with a telescope.

Reflection nebula

Contrasting blue reflection nebula NGC 2023 is visible. In this image, both Horsehead and NGC 2023 seem to be caught in beams of light shining. The beams are just internal reflections from bright star Sigma Orionis. The horse-head feature is dark object. It is an opaque dust cloud which lies in front of the bright emission nebula. Clouds has assumed a recognizable shape by chance. That will change in the years to come. After many thousands of years, the internal motions of the cloud will alter its appearance. The colors will stay the same, but the nebulae will change the look.
