Blown by the wind from a massive star, this interstellar apparition has a surprisingly familiar shape. Cataloged as NGC 7635, it is also known simply as The Bubble Nebula. Although it looks delicate, the 10 light-year diameter bubble offers evidence of violent processes at work. Below and left of the Bubble's center is a hot, O star, several hundred thousand times more luminous and around 45 times more massive than the Sun. A fierce stellar wind and intense radiation from that star has blasted out the structure of glowing gas against denser material in a surrounding molecular cloud. The intriguing Bubble Nebula and associated cloud complex lie a mere 11,000 light-years away toward the boastful constellation Cassiopeia. This tantalizing view of the cosmic bubble is composed from narrowband image data, recording emission from the region's ionized hydrogen and oxygen atoms. A well chiosen set covering the early Pink Floyd era from 1967 through to 1971's Meddle included the early singles "See Emily Play", "Arnold Layne" and "Point me At the Sky" together with the erie space-rock of Astronomy Dominie, Interstellar Overdrive (kicking off the show) and superb encore A Saucerful of Secrets. Along the way we had Vegetable Man, the Nile Song, Bike and One of these Days proving that this early material really rocks and showcasing the enigmatic and playful songwriting of the much-lamented Syd Barrett. Nice to see the late, great Rick Wright get a namecheck too. And ex-Spands Gary Kemp fitted in just right.
I was in the middle of nowhere and spent about 5 minutes or so tracing my car with a torch when a car unexpectidly came by and I had to run and cover the lens, but not before the headlights appeard in my FOV.
