I've been working on learning how to light things with off camera strobes lately, and I was asked by someone to photograph their living room for them.
For this picture, I first found the correct exposure without a flash was with f11 at a shutter speed of 1/30 second and an ISO of 200 to record the light coming through the windows correctly.
Once I determined that, I turned on the two flashes (one in a softbox on the left out of camera view, and one shooting through an umbrella on the right out of camera view) and set the shutter speed to 1/180 sec so that the only ambient light in the picture would be from the two windows. I used the pop up flash on my D90 to trigger the two strobes using Nikon's Creative Lighting System and the TTL setting. Basically, I wanted the ambient light from the window with the illumination from the two strobes lighting the room. One thing I learned is that for even lighting it would be much better to use two softboxes rather than a softbox and a shoot through umbrella. If you look at the floor on the left, the light is much stronger than the light from the umbrella on the right. I would have been better off with balanced light sources. Of course, the best solution would have been a giant softbox in the center of the room, out of camera view, shooting down and illuminating everything evenly. Or several large skylights on a cloudy day. Not in the budget.

An A stock blind box with a bit of history (and in absolutely mint condition). 5090 was one unit of the last Chesham shuttle train.
Decided I wanted it to be running off the mains electricity as opposed to batteries so the whole thing had to be re-wired. Stripped the original wiring as it was designed to run off the train supply which is a completely different voltage to what you get at home. New strip light fitting and fixture was installed (which was sat in place in the lighting tube brackets, held by cable ties, using the originally drilled holes in the back of the box) and mains cable ran through the top of the box where the original train wiring was. Just needs to be modded now to include a switch on the cable.

In November, 2011, Walmart opened its first store in the U.S. with 100% LED sales floor lighting. The LEDs in the Wichita, Kan. Neighborhood Market use 40% less energy compared to traditional florescent lights and last 8-9 years. The LED lights are expected to save the Neighborhood Market 140,000 kWh a year in energy use, the equivalent of powering 10 average homes.

One on Camera, Full diffusion, 1/2 power
Two CL:
One pointed towards the door, WAD, 1/4 power.
The Second WAD through umbrella, pointed into the room, 1/2 power
Three in the Dining Room. This was by far the hardest to light evenly, especially since it was so dark. So as my motto goes, more flashes don't necessarily mean more power but greater finesse.
There are 2 spaced evenly on the right hand side, both WAD pointed into the room at 1/2 power and one just behind the left door pointed into the corner, WAD, 1/32nd power.
Finally there are 2 in the room to the right, similar set up to the DR. Both on the right hand side spaced evenly, WAD, pointed into the room at 1/8th and 1/16th power.
I took time out the other night to turn the camera onto my car. I left the boot open - on purpose - and this also left the interior lights on so to add some warm lighting from inside the car for the photo.
