Determination is a human character trait whereby we become intent on achieving a goal. This form of resolve can be either positive or negative. However, what I want to write about is the positive side of determination. The side that makes us think of a firmness of purpose, and the resolve to be willing to do whatever it takes to get to where it is we want to be. The determination that sees us overcoming any obstacles. Now, what I talk about is not some revolutionary change that you want to bring about - to me, that is a different kind of determination - instead, I speak about determination on a personal level. A willpower to be a better person than the one you were yesterday. To overcome any personal falls and pull ourselves back up. To not stop doing what it is we love just because others think it worthless. To ignore the negative little voice inside our heads telling us we can't do that, don't even attempt that, you might as well quit now, don't even try, just give up. To feel fear and to see the risks and then to have the determination to close our eyes to them so that in the end we can reap the rewards. The determination that sees us never giving up on life.

I came across another hawk when I unknowingly crossed its territory. Here's a few photos of it swooping as it ensures I'm on my way. You can see a bit of the last meal spread across its face as it's almost in the lens.

After a beautiful sunset out by the Peter Iredale, I dashed with intent and purpose toward the spot where I previously shot this. I took that picture with what Canon decides to grace us suckers with as a kit lens, and it's a bit soft and grainy as a result. So here we go again.
The weather has been beautiful, so the Saturday night sky was a glorious dark blue/purple. Very different from the dark, misty night I previously shot on. This is also a two-minute exposure as opposed to a 30-second, giving my "spaghetti" a much thicker consistency. I'm very pleased with the clarity, and I had a great time trying to find this spot again (after weaving all over the top of the hill yet again--I should really write that street down).

I was thumbing through the William Price "Western Maryland Steam Album" book with the intent of gaining some day dreaming time, instead I found myself pondering what it would be like to stand on Helmstetters curve when a big 4-8-4 Potomac class came up the grade. Most of my journey through railroad history (and my photo descriptions as a result) tend to lean into a yearn to see railroads in their glory years. This photo then popped into my mind. After being in service for 2 years, I just started shooting the 2102 at Reading and Northern that summer and fall. I did 3 outings to see the thing and enjoyed all of them. The 2102 is big enough to produce power, but not powerful enough to have a seamless run with whatever train you throw at it. The T-1s were built in house by the Reading company using some select parts recycled from other engines. Some call them "rebuilds" because of this. The T-1s were some of the biggest and baddest engines on the Reading minus the light mallets the road rostered. At the end of steam, 5 survived into Reading Rambles excursion service (with one being scrapped for parts during this time period before 1964). Since then they lived on in various states at various places. 2102 runs up the former Reading trackage into the anthracite region and over the former CNJ branch from Haucks to Jim Thorpe in the present day. The run has various grades, bridges, tunnels, and obstacles. North of Tamaqua the trackage starts a hefty climb up to Hometown where it crests downhill to Jim Thorpe. At mile marker 99, at the searchlights installed within the past 10 years, the train's dig into the grade has already begun. You can hear the beating on the rails from lightyears away, it becomes oh so closely sounding but continues to trick the mind. The bellless crossing next to the signals activates. Lights stream around the corner. Then the sounds, A long, a long, "OSJT, Clear signal, 99", a short, a long. The engine, shooting smoke at high velocity out the stack, thunders at the trees and removes their leaves. The approach lit SB signal lights up, rails squeel, the bridge takes on the weight of the engine... you can no longer hear anything... A static takes hold as the exhaust has produced enough sound to pierce your ears. Its loud but silent, the camera clicks away without a detectable sound. Decibels rise, you cannot hear yourself think. You take the camera down and get the friendly wave, they have ear plugs! The shrill passes and then slowly fades. The rail squeals as the clickety clacks fade back in like a studio mix on a 60s hippy song. Marker lights on the rear observation car conclude the show. The crossing lights conclude their flashing, the railfans scurry back to their cars and leave in a hurry, the signal goes back to darkness. Peace has returned to the Schuylkill Valley.

A Plains Bison is intent on grazing the last grasses of summer as the sun rises behind him and a lone photographer crouches in front (but not too close - I was barely in his awareness zone). It was a pristine moment - almost too pristine, I think. Was everything really that... smooth???
I think maybe it was. In processing, I didn't change anything from my normal workflow. No excessive noise removal. I recall that in the field I did a lot of maneuvering to obtain as much rim lighting as possible, with varying amounts of the sun showing behind the bison, and I had no sense of which shots - if any - were working. Exposure? Wild guesses! Adrenaline? I only get an adrenaline rush when I'm being chased by large animals; this scene was as peaceful and relaxed as it looks.
One more prairie shot coming, tomorrow, and then we will move on to something different.

A tad early, given it was only 11:20am, the Pelican had turned up for lunch at this restaurant on the shore of Sydney harbour.
He was obviously loitering with intent and used to getting a little something from the staff as not much would move him from the entrance.
I'm naturally nervous around birds, so it took a moment for me to pass it. Joshua, on the other hand, wasn't scared at all and took a selfie with Mr Pelican.

This Red Fox has become a regular visitor to our neighbourhood. I first noticed it intently eyeing several squirrels getting treats from the next door sundeck. It was interesting to see it in attack mode. Unfortunately by the time I grabbed the camera I only got a parting shot. No squirrels today!
Over the past three weeks, I have been getting to know this robin at my local nature reserve. As I walk through the mud nearby to where it is perched, it will fly down to a lower perch and softly sing while watching intently. I quickly realised that my boots help to disturb the ground, which in turn encourages worms and other insects to come up to the surface. So while it waits for a worm to surface whilst intently eyeing up the ground around my feet, I get some incredible photo opportunities.

I'd travelled down to Devon and Cornwall for a long weekend of rail photography intent on bagging a few Westerns, and any other diesel hydraulics that came my way.
After spending the Friday evening at a B&B in Penzance, I made my way back up to Plymouth for the next B&B and where I took the opportunity to walk out to Laira Depot for a few shots. I can't remember whether I asked permission to walk around (something you only tended to do if you were about to be confronted!), but do recall things were pretty relaxed there on this Saturday night. Not surprisingly there were plenty of locos on shed too.
In the frame here is class 52, D1071 'Western Renown' sporting a headcode of 1C63. With headcodes still seeing regular use at the time you'd be inclined to think this was its last working down to the West Country, however my (admittedly, limited) research suggests 1C63 was the 1.15pm Paddington - Cardiff instead. Hmm.....
In addition to 1071, there were six other Westerns present: 1009, 1013, 1014, 1027, 1030, and 1041. In a sign of the times there were also five class 08 and two class 03 shunters stabled too, plus the usual assortment of other main-line locomotives.
The shot was taken on a Zenit E so edge sharpness isn't the best. That said, I did think it worth investing fifty minutes or so of my life removing the worst of the dust marks, but frankly lost the will for anything more. I did scan it at high-res so it should comfortably display full screen, dust marks and all.

Regno Unito, Londra, Battersea Power Station, Autunno 2023
sotto per provare a rovesciare la vecchia Inghilterra;
Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned coal-fired power station located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Battersea, an inner-city district of South West London. It comprises two individual power stations, built in two stages in the form of a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built in the 1930s, with Battersea B Power Station to its east in the 1950s. The two stations were built to an identical design, providing the well-known four-chimney layout. The station is the largest brick building in Europe and is notable for its original, lavish Art Deco interior fittings and decor. The station provided a fifth of London's electricity needs. The station ceased generating electricity in 1983, but over the past 50 years, it has become one of the best-known landmarks in London. The station's celebrity owes much to numerous cultural appearances, which include the cover art of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals, where the station was photographed with an inflatable pink pig floating between the two front chimneys.
Guy Fawkes Night is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. On 31 January 1606, Fawkes was hanged, and then his lifeless body was quartered and, as was the custom, his body parts were then distributed to "the four corners of the kingdom", to be displayed as a warning to other would-be traitors. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London. The now emblematic Guy Fawkes mask, made famous by the film V for Vendetta, has surprisingly become a worldwide bestseller as a revolutionary symbol for the younger generation.
« Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up King and Parliament.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King! »
