Intel has been pushing hard into the IoT (Internet of Things) space over the past couple of years. It makes sense. A company that sells chips, and a movement whose demand currently outstrips supply.
Their previous Maker board the Galileo left me unimpressed. The Edison however has a new, smaller form-factor, wireless and BTLE on board. Interestingly enough, it runs at 1.7 volts, but you can level shift it up. More on that with the starter kit overview.

Intel Research Berkeley: Steerable Antenna for Technology & Infrastructure for Emerging Regions ("TIER" - a UC Berkeley Research Group)
This is the Intel Edison next to a Sacagawea dollar. Hard to believe the performance and connectivity packed into this tiny form-factor. When they were showing it off at CES, they were showing an SD card form-factor. This clearly is not that, but it is not far off. I wonder if using the SD dimensions would have caused legal problems with Electric Imp?

Intel: many people ask me where I work and what do I do. When I tell them they get confused and then tell me that I fix computers. I don't, what I do is I make this. We take sand and turn it into this. A small brain that controls a computer. Detail and complexity is our passion. We make your everyday devices run smoothly and quickly. I decided to try my first macro shot showcasing our design. Intel inside

A view into the partially finished Intel Building in downtown Austin. During the tech boom of 1999-2000 a number of tech companies expressed their desire to build new offices in downtown Austin and one of them, Intel, actually broke ground on this building. However, when the bubble collapsed, everyone abandoned their efforts... and unfortunately 5 years later this eyesore is still a part of our downtown area.
