If I have my bearings straight, and I'm pretty sure that I do, I'm on the eastern side of Vesuvius' Gran Cono, on the trail at the edge of the crater or just downslope of it. And I'm facing east-southeastward.

This post's header, which translates as "Darkness and Light," refers to the fact that the terminator nicely separates zones of the volcano's slope. (Here the italicized technical term refers not to Ah-nuld but to the sharp boundary between sun and shade.)

Wrapped in shadow but still visible in the foreground, the upper cone's surface consists of tiny ash particles, lapilli—pyroclastic material with a diameter of 2 to 64 mm, or 0.08 to 2.52 in—and larger blocks. But down in the sunshine of the middle ground is a much different, undulating stretch of lava flows or hot-avalanche deposits.

A most helpful source I've cited before in this series is the scholarly article "Volcanic Evolution of the Somma-Vesuvius Complex (Italy)," Sbrana et al., Journal of Maps, January 2020. According to the splendid chart it contains, everything in the light and darkness I've discussed so far dates to after AD 1631. And the pyroclastic material closest at hand is almost certainly a product of the last great eruption, in 1944.

By the way, the low, reddish-brown ridgeline at the far edge of the sunlit flow is, if I'm not mistaken, the southeasternmost extension of the surviving Mount Somma caldera rim.

The other photos and descriptions of this series can be found in my Integrative Natural History of Mount Vesuvius & the Gulf of Naples album.

Members of the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion brief the Hon. Brad R. Carson, undersecretary of the Army, on the capabilities of the EMARSS, a critical component of future irregular warfare operations. One challenge facing the acquisition community is identifying ways to integrate new capabilities such as EMARSS into enduring programs, to capitalize on investment and ensure readiness against future threats. It feels very strange to begin to integrate those things that were part of my childhood into my house and my everyday life.

I always like the idea of using the "good" china everyday. So, I"m going to use the "good" glasses we always used for Thanksgiving and Christmas only for everyday occasions such as, coming home from work or completing a trip to the gym.

And the chess set that my Mom made especially for my Dad - we're going to use that too. For chess. But that may be a rarer occasion still.

Scenes from COSI's "Integrating Science and Language Arts" teacher workshop, held on June 9-10, 2014.

After reading a story about a fish who lives in a polluted stream, teachers learned how to lead a classroom activity that challenges students to create their own filters that can remove pollutants from stream water.

The print solenoids (one for each platten) are connected to a chocolate block (screw terminal block) that is normally screwed to the solenoid mounting plate. Here a pair of LEDs and series resistors have been fitted in place of the solenoids. The middle 2 terminal (yellow/red wires) are the +36V power rail, the outside 2 wires are grounded via power transistors on the ancillary control and data control PCBs to oeprate the solenoids.

For the first time ever, all 10 NASA field centers participated in a multi-center NASA Social event Dec. 3, previewing the Dec. 4 first flight of the Orion Spacecraft on Exploration Flight Test-1.

Goddard hosted up to 25 social media followers to attend an afternoon celebrating the Orion launch. Attendees toured the Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory, where Martian meteorites and other samples are tested to answer two of the biggest mysteries facing humanity: How did we get here? And are we alone? We'll also tour Goddard's massive Integration and Testing Facility, where spacecraft are built and tested and the world's largest cleanroom where the James Webb Space Telescope is being constructed. Webb is the scientific successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. It will be the most powerful space telescope ever built.
