Breakout Session: Everyone Can Play: Sports as a Catalyst for Development & Integration

Sports programs are valuable tools for development, education, health, and the integration of youth and vulnerable populations—yet they are often underfunded and under-resourced, exacerbating participation barriers for many individuals worldwide but particularly for those living in developing countries. The obstacles to playing sports are even greater for those with disabilities, girls and women, and the LGBT community, causing them to bypass meaningful opportunities to increase self-esteem, life skills, and community integration. It is in the interest of actors across sectors to work together to break down barriers and boost worldwide participation in sports to ensure that everyone can play.
In this session, leaders from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors will discuss how CGI members can:
• Develop long-term financing solutions for sustainable sports initiatives—particularly in developing and low-income regions.
• Increase and improve non-monetary resources for sports, such as safe environments and access to equipment, coaches, and inclusive community programs.
• Support partnerships that enable sports to bridge cultural and ethnic divides, promote tolerance and non-discrimination, and reinforce social unification.

Eu:CROPIS ist ein Gewächshaus, mit dem erforscht werden soll, wie sich Pflanzen - in diesem Fall Tomaten - unter Weltraumbedingungen entwickeln. Der Satellitenbus wurde vom DLR Institut für Raumfahrtsysteme in Bremen entwickelt und gebaut. Die wissenschaftlichen Experimente sind Beiträge des DLR-Institut für Luft- und Raumfahrtmedizin, dem DLR-Institut für Faserverbundleichtbau und Adaptronik, der Friedrich-Alexander-Uni Erlangen sowie dem NASA Ames Research Center und der Utah State University. Der Satellit und seine Gewächshäuser werden vom DLR gesteuert und kontrolliert.

AMMAN, JORDAN - OCTOBER 1, 2015:
Students line up for morning activities at Khawla Bint Tha’laba Primary Girls School, located in Sweileh, Jordan. The small public school, which has 356 students, also hosts around 65 Syrian students from refugee families that are living in the Amman suburb. It operates out of a rented building that was not designed to be a school. Because of space issues, students are grouped into classes according to room size. The very small classrooms have around 20 students. The larger classrooms have 40 or more students. The school has a remedial program that USAID supports with teacher training. The United States has a long history of supporting education in Jordan, starting with teacher and technical training in the 1950s. Since then, USAID has built schools, donated libraries and sent thousands of Jordanians to study in American institutions; countless more have been trained in Jordan. Between 2002 and 2014, USAID invested $458 million in the education sector. Today, USAID supports Jordan’s efforts to educate around 128,000 new Syrian students crowding into Jordan’s schools by providing teacher training and developing an early grade reading and math diagnostic tool. The agency also builds and refurbishes schools throughout the country.
Jordan’s teachers, struggling to achieve basic levels of proficiency in their classes, have the added burden of trying to accommodate and integrate new students who have suffered unthinkable trauma and may need special counseling and care.

Every year at ICU, there is a school festival that takes place over the weekend. A group had asked a bunch of study abroad students to walk around the campus in a kimono for fun. I went and was dressed by 4-5 ladies, and had to wear towels around my waist since I was too curvy and it would distort the shape of the kimono. It was extremely uncomfortable but I looked pretty!
