The Ever-Important Arts.. balm for the soul

A macro of a note boundary on a steel pan - not my best effort, but the reflective surface was harder to photograph in macro than i thought it would be, and i ran out of time!

Musical instruments on the stage during a twenty-minute recess.

This instrument is called a thumb piano or a kalimba. This picture was taken for Macro Mondays music edition.

Instruments of torture used by the Spanish inquisition are on display at the Museo de Cartagena de Indias in Cartagena, Colombia. The figure on the right is wearing an "horquilla del hereje" that impedes movement of the head.

This week I went for a selfie featuring my three guitars. My Dobro, George Benson and Spanish guitar. There is a bit of His Master Voice" (HMV) in this picture as well, can you spot him?

Seashell Lyre carved in Lemonwood 7cm x 1.5cm. Extreme light gauge spider silk strings tuned to the Phrygian mode on C10 (pretty much beyond the range of human hearing). Quite challenging to find an appropriate pick but I settled on the Gibson Pure XH.

Portsmouth Cathedral, which started as a parish church in the 12th century, has a very unusual layout. The building is a culmination of many years of construction and is defined as two separated parts – a quire where most services are held and a nave used for major celebrations and concerts. A tunnel under the organ gallery links these two parts.

The 1861 John Nicholson organ was originally built for Manchester Cathedral with the first phase of renovation work carried out by Nicholson & Co in 1994. This phase of work involved the replacement of the structure, soundboards, action and wind system as well as a new console which was positioned en fenêtre within the 1718 Jordan case. The casework, which was in a poor state of repair, was restored by Nicholson & Co. craftsmen. The missing lower panelling was completed in solid English oak and the pipes and figures re-gilded in 24 carat English gold leaf.

In 2001 the new West Great division was added. The Nave division has now been designed and voiced to become partner of the greater instrument and the West Great blends superbly with the Swell and with the Pedal division (just behind the new division). This work included a new case of imaginative and contemporary design.

In 2017, we added an exciting new en chamade solo reed stop – the Trompete de Maris, mounted below the ceiling at the west end of the cathedral. We also completed a comprehensive refurbishment of the console, including enhancements to playing aids such as the provision of a stepper. youtu.be/CibdzsPrIkY

Couldn't be simpler: a red tambourine with brass jingles.

It's a type of trickling filter of coffee.

A welcoming serenade for new arrivals at the walkways up to the Acropolis, by a practitioner of the Bouzouki.

Last week I shot my friend's band playing this instrument. It's just awesome and the sound it's too surreal! I loved it!

Too sad that I forgot how is called...Does anyone know?

Updated: My dear friend Vassilis V. told me that this instrument is called Sitar. Thank you so much Vassilis! :) :) :)

This is where I feel at home.

I spent all of yesterday working on a Spanish project that required me to make 277 flash cards with Spanish on one side and a picture on the other. Guess how long that took me. And now I have another project in that class and finals are in a week. Oh, and I did a fight scene in Drama today. I think I got a B- I totally ruined one of the moves. Oh well.

On the bright side, I'm reading The Mortal Instruments- Book Two right now (really great series, I highly recommend it) and eating a sandwich.

I got an Instagram! If you're interesting in following me, my username is sammarieenglish. Tell me if you have an Instagram so I can follow you! :)

Replaced this because I didn't like the first one. Follow up of this.

Along the East Pier in Dunlaoghaire stands a weather station, recording wind speed, air temperature among other things. This anemometer and instruments capture this data to assist the meteorological office and local seafarers.

--Huxitar, Uygur folk musical instrument from SinKiang--

It is the first time I went to a restaurant with a DSLR(clearly a symptom of flickr addiction), I can't recall the name of the uygur instrument on the patterned wall, the restaurant was run by a hometown folk, a stout uygur woman, anyway, her pretty daughter sets up the whole place

"these instruments are very unique with a history of thousands of years, stems from Ancient Silk Road, blended with Central Plain culture, Central Asia Culture and Islamic Culture."
