Photographer Nick Whitman has been photographing this 140- to 175-year-old sugar maple tree in the Science Quad for a number of years. This winter, the tree was deemed unsafe and had to be removed. Students in Whitman's Winter Study course on landscape photography took these photos and created this tribute to the tree.
The course, "Landscape Photography," broadens students' appreciation for the appearance and history of the landscape and teaches the skills of making a successful photograph.

Steven Humes, a Platoon Instructor at the Korean Augmentee to the U.S. Army (KATUSA) Training Center, Camp Jackson, Republic of Korea, evaluates a trainee on field stripping an M-16 Oct. 30, 1998. Originally begun in 1950, the KATUSA program was designed to augment U.S. fighting forces just after the breakout of the Korean War. After the armistice KATUSA soldiers remained with 8th Army units to enhance mission capability. Korean enlistees attend a 20 day training program at the center where they refine their English language skills, and learn about American culture as well as U.S. Army structure and methods. Heather and I were out and about on Valentines Day and decided to check out the Starbelly Dancers at the International Market in Boise. It was our first time there; interesting smells and sights all around us. We watched the whole show - it was great. We both loved the red curtain as a backdrop as it made the colors of the dancers outfits really pop. Great show, ladies - and we hope to see you again in the future!
