Pollen covered insect on the dill plant.

I was looking for butterflies in a scrubby limestone area near Riberac in France and noticed these incredible insects with shimmering yellow wings whizzing about. Close-up they are just amazing, and surprising from all angles.

This Four-spotted Skimmer is feeding on another insect, which is the whitish-looking bit in its mandibles. I watched the meal disappear!

I planted lots of Centranthus ruber (also called red valerian and Jupiter's beard) last year in hopes of attracting some butterflies. This year, I am surrounded by Western Tiger Swallowtails. Sometimes, my plans actually work out!

This little one showed up when taking pics of the mini rose with the magnifying lens. He wasn't very big but the lens filter enlarged it quite a bit.

Macro practice

Have spotted these very tiny springtails again this year. They are very small and active, tricky to get a good shot!

I think it's the small white, but please correct me if I've got it wrong!

The magnificent butterfly, probably most peoples favorite insect. There are over 24,000 varieties of them in the world, they can't fly unless their body temperature is at least 86 degrees, Antarctica is the only continent that does not have butterflies, the longest life span of any butterfly is only 9-10 months, and they are represented in Egypt pyramids.....Just some interesting tidbits that make them even more interesting.

Have not made an attempt to classify this species. It is a rather large insect, body size approx 2 cm. Insect-on-glass-111014(1)
