This photo was in the 2011 Monongalia County Fair and the 2011 Italian Heritage Festival - Harrison County Photography Club Photo Contests. It didn't place. It does look better on a print than here, IMO. I think I like this photo since it is rather hard to catch these grasshoppers!

Thistle Tortoise beetle pupa (Cassida rubiginosa).

London, Ontario, Canada.

June 18, 2005.

This is surely one of the most bizarre, alien-looking life forms on our planet! However, its status as an alien invader arises from the fact that it was accidentally introduced to North America from Europe circa 1901.

Any resemblance to popular Science Fiction creatures is purely coincidental. ;-)

There are about 30 native species of Tortoise beetles in North America, and I'm guessing their pupae look very similar to this one.

Insecta Diptera Syrphidae Eristalis tenax

20 February 2002

Diptera, Syrphidae, bee mimicking hover fly, probably Eristalis tenax (in Crowe 1999).

E. tenax is a European fly with dung eating maggots that have a telescopic breathing tube (hence the name, rat-tailed maggots).

when I shot this one I didn't realize that there were some other insects sitting on the twig - when you zoom in you can see them nicely!

Interesting aphid fact of the day - those tubes on it's rear are cornicles and produce a protective waxy secretion.
