The way that these European Wool Carder Bees sleep in my Lavender is almost comical.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the stem of the Lavender with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady.

I was planting some Rosemary and noticed this little Caterpillar on one of the branches. No idea what it will become.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Denoise AI and Clarity in that order.

Gestern war ich wieder spontan unterwegs auf der Jagd nach schöne Libellen und ich wurde fündig 😃 📷❤👌

This male Leaf Cutter Bee (Megachile sp) was only in my Lavender for a few days, so I tried to get a lot of different compositions.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the fill for this shot), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the Lavender stem with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady.

My continuation is chasing bumblebees in the garden. Warm weather is finally here, and the chives have flowered. The bees love this plant.

Taken in Shropshire.

I shot this feeding Bumblebee while holding the camera horizontally but framed it for a vertical composition and turned it in post.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the Lavender stem with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady. I injected Agave nectar into the Lavender flower to give the critter a reason to let me get close.

Heute konnte ich auch mal eine Gemeine Skorpionsfliege einfangen :)

I stopped at Lago d'Averno and photographed this Violet Darter in the heat of the day. I know the habits and quirks of this species, so it's not too difficult to get right on top of them (especially when they are actively hunting).

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to roughly 2.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL metering, -2/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order.

Shooting a hyperactive beetle feeding on Poppy pollen is probably the most technically challenging macro photography that I've done to date. Lots of deleted frames.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/125, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (about 2.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Adding some light to your macro photography helps you shoot at narrower apertures and fills in shadows for sharper, more detailed macro images.

Technique: It was cool this morning when I found this mating pair, and with both of them feeling lethargic due to the temperature I was able to coax the female into climbing onto my finger. I set the Fstop to 11 and the shutter to 1/125th so that I could expose the sky behind them. The tricky part is hand holding over 2 kilos (4.8 pounds) of camera gear while sliding the lens on my hand to get them both in focus. Lots of deleted frames.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/125, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 1x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering).

looks like one could fit a lot of fruit in that thing...

This male Leaf Cutter Bee (Megachile sp) was snoozing in my Lavender for a few days. We seem to have a lot of ground dwelling solitary bees in my area, and that's a good thing!

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the stem of the Lavender with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady.

I found this Cricket foraging on a Dandelion at the Monte Orlando Nature Preserve in Gaeta, Italy in July of 2020. The nature preserve gets a lot of foot traffic, so I think this critter was use to people being around.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-26EX RT (E-TTL metering). This is a single, cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order. I dragged the shutter and increased the ISO to expose for the natural light in the background while keeping the subject in the shade.

Technique: It was a cool day (18C) with partly cloudy skies and intermittent light showers -perfect weather to go looking for solitary bees since they'll have a tough time keeping their metabolism up. I got lucky and found this Mason bee semi-dormant in my Lavender.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black. In post I used Topaz Labs Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Clarity (in that order).
