All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;
I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, performing their portraits, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
The volcano Etna, in recent days has shown an intense eruptive activity, I photographed that spectacular eruptions from Taormina;
I tried to capture minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street .. ... in search of fleeting moments ...
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina;
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo incontrato prima, eseguendo dei loro ritratti, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
il vulcano Etna, nei giorni scorsi ha mostrato una intensa attività eruttiva, anche con intensi fenomeni chiamati "fontane di lava", emissioni a getto continuo perdurate intensamente per molti minuti, di altissime "fontane" di magma incandescente, molto spettacolari e non comuni, le fotografie dell'Etna sono state realizzate da Taormina;
ho provato a cogliere storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

The dates 1861 and 1865 are raised on opposite sides of the base.
The uppermost ring features the phrase, "One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation, evermore." which is a quote from Ship of State, by Oliver Wendell Holmes.
The monument features three bronze statues one on the top representing Liberty and two on the lower level; one a Union Soldier, the other representing Peace.
Of note is that Liberty is pointing south towards the battlefields of the War.
The north facing has the inscription:
From Sumter by land and sea to Appomattox.
Indicating the beginning and end of the Civil War.

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;
I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
I came across a mural whose faces were erased with a spray can: it was deliberately defaced, outraged, whoever did this, for political purposes and for reasons of opportunism, then published this gesture on Facebook, as if it were a trophy, causing serious damage not only to the whole community of Taormina, but also to anyone who comes to Taormina, who must be able to enjoy its natural, cultural and artistic beauties: now this mural created by the street artist TVBOY entitled "Saint Carola protectress of refugees" has been horribly mutilated by her beauty, but, even so ... it cannot fail to arouse emotion, because that black spray that has erased the faces, (to me) seems to have given the work even more voice, the voice of suffering of those who travel to other worlds, knowing they are going to meet enormous risks and a future full of uncertainties: a future as black as that spray; so I wanted to know (and photograph) the other two murals by TVBOY, an artist of Sicilian origins, one depicts the pop singer Mahmood, a work entitled "San Mahmood", the other work is titled "Homage to the master Andrea Camilleri";
I photographed the spectacular eruption of the Etna volcano which took place on the evening of 01/18-2021, using a telephoto lens;
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

mi sono imbattuto in un murales i cui volti sono stati cancellati con una bomboletta spray: è stato volutamente deturpato, oltraggiato, chi ha fatto ciò, per scopi politici e per motivi di opportunismo, ha poi pubblicato tale gesto su Facebook, come se fosse un trofeo, arrecando un danno gravissimo non solo a tutta la comunità di Taormina, ma anche a chiunque venga a Taormina, che deve poter godere delle sue bellezze naturali, culturali ed artistiche: adesso questo murales realizzato ad opera dello street artist TVBOY intitolato “Santa Carola protettrice dei rifugiati” è stato orrendamente mutilato della sua bellezza, ma, anche così…non può non suscitare commozione, perché quello spray nero che ha cancellato i volti, (a me) sembra aver dato all’opera ancora più voce, la voce della sofferenza di chi si mette in viaggio verso altri mondi, sapendo di andare incontro a enormi rischi e ad un futuro colmo di incertezze: un futuro nero come quello spray; ho voluto così conoscere (e fotografare) gli altri due murales di TVBOY, artista di origini siciliane, uno raffigura il cantante pop Mahmood, opera intitolata “San Mahmood”, l’altra opera si intitola “Omaggio al maestro Andrea Camilleri”;
Ho fotografato la spettacolare eruzione del vulcano Etna avvenuta la sera del 18-01-2021, utilizzando un teleobiettivo;
sono queste solo alcune storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

The island of Sicily is a land that you never stop discovering, rich in natural treasures, artistic works, artifacts that are the fruit of human ingenuity, in its historical and cultural panorama it is the popular traditions that represent an unparalleled "eco living, static and dynamic at the same time "that exist (and persist) becoming visible, only when it is the people themselves who decide to give voice to them, traditions whose roots sink into a dark and distant past made up of stratified cultures between them, very often synonymous with wars and dominations, to throw ever green leaves in the present: this as a preamble to what I am going to describe in words and photographs, of the traditional folk festival of the "Maiorchino tournament", unique in its kind, which is is held this year in the Sicilian town of Novara di Sicilia. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. The “Maiorchino Tournament” is a game that was once very popular in the province of Messina (Sicily) in the areas of the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, but which today survives exclusively in the town of Novara di Sicilia; the game-competition, complete with cheering towards the various teams, takes place during the Carnival period, it is a team competition (each team consists of three players, both men and women), which consists in throwing a heavy circular shape the precious Novara di Sicilia cheese called “Maiorchino” (cheese made with sheep's and goat's milk, whose weight varies between 10 and 12 kg); to throw the heavy cheese the players use a rope that is wound (as if it were a yo-yo) along the circumference of the cheese, a rope that is previously treated with pitch, to make it more "sticky" when it is unrolled during the launch; the route is downhill and is in stages, the total length of which is about one kilometer; to complete the entire course each team will have to do a lot of throws, the team that completes the entire course with fewer throws as possible wins. The photographs of the tournament, both for men and women, I took on Shrove Tuesday this year 2022, while the last two past editions were not taken due to the covid-19 pandemic.
L’isola di Sicilia è una terra che non si finisce mai di scoprire, ricchissima di tesori naturali, di opere artistiche, di manufatti frutto dell’ingegno umano, nel suo panorama storico e culturale sono le tradizioni popolari quelle che rappresentano una ineguagliabile “eco vivente, statica e dinamica al tempo stesso” che esistono (e persistono) divenendo visibili, solo nel momento in cui è il popolo stesso che decide di dare voce ad esse, tradizioni le cui radici sprofondano in un oscuro e lontano passato fatto di culture stratificate tra loro, molto spesso sinonimo di guerre e dominazioni, per gettare foglie sempre verdi nel presente: questo come preambolo di quanto vado a descrivere in parole e fotografie, della tradizionale festa popolare del “torneo del Maiorchino”, unica nel suo genere, che si è tenuto quest’anno nel paese siciliano di Novara di Sicilia. Questo antico centro medioevale è un antico borgo situato in provincia di Messina, Il cui nome sembrerebbe provenire da una trasformazione dell’antico nome latino Noa nella lingua araba Nouah, che significa “giardino fiorito”, ad indicare la bellezza di questo territorio, così apprezzato dagli Arabi quando qui si insediarono. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.

Born in Bangor, Maine, James Everett Stuart became known for his panoramic landscapes from Maine to California to Alaska to the Panama Canal, but especially of the American West with focus on Northern California and Oregon. Reportedly he painted more than 5000 paintings during his lifetime and originated a method of painting on aluminum and wood with a special adhering process that he thought made his work quite durable but proved not to be so. He also wrote on the back of most of his paintings
His parents took him to California at the age of eight, and the family settled in San Francisco where he attended the public schools and studied art with Virgil Williams, Raymond Yelland, Thomas Hill, and William Keith at the San Francisco School of Design. His early work was dramatic California landscape including the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, and in style the works were moody and mysterious and suggestive of the French Barbizon School. He first traveled to the Northwest in 1876, and in 1881, he opened his studio in Portland, Oregon and from there traveled throughout the West and East Coast and into Mexico. Subjects included Yosemite as well as California missions and adobes. He painted landscapes whose sales ultimately were financially remunerative and which established his reputation.
in 1885, he first went to Yellowstone where he camped for several weeks, supplied himself with fish for food, climbed steep cliffs including Electric Peak, and filled his sketchbook for studio paintings. The following summer, Stuart returned, having negotiated a free pass from the Northern Pacific Railroad in exchange for paintings. At the end of the summer, he went East to New York City on the return part of his train pass. Settling a studio in New York for four years, he continued to arrange several more summer railroad passes to Yellowstone. He was unable to arrange a formal arrangement for painting sales from the Park's gift shop, so he sold paintings from his tent.
Of those years, he expressed that he much preferred being in the park to studio painting, but he stopped visiting in 1889 and instead traveled to Alaska and the Coastal Range.
During much of the 1890s, he lived in Chicago, but in 1912 returned to San Francisco until his death in 1941. There, from his studio near Union Square, he was highly successful and popular among his peers, underscored by his membership in the Bohemian Club. Many of the owners of old homes in California have his paintings on the wall, suggestive of a time of grandeur. One of his paintings is in the White House, and his work is in the historical societies of Oregon, Washington, and Montana.

... every two months, my Provincial Health Authority of Messina (Sicily) sends me on a mission for three days (from Taormina) to the Civil Hospital of Lipari, located in via Saint Anne ... In my spare time, free from commitments of work, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion; the photographs I present here were all taken in February of this year 2022; I took photos according to the dictates of street photography, I made some portraits, having always met people in the hand and very willing to let themselves be photographed (maybe ... that the islanders are open-minded, eager and used to communicate with strangers ..?!), some portraits were made of people intent on their work, some fishermen were intent on repairing their nets, a lady showed me one of her beautiful work, a blanket she made with knitting needles , hanging on her balcony (it reminded me of the shawls my grandmother made, also made with hand knitting needles); all the photos were taken in the city of Lipari, except three, taken in the dark in the port of Milazzo, the port of departure and arrival with hydrofoils (but there is also the ship) for the Aeolian Islands.
….ogni due mesi, la mia Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale di Messina, mi manda in missione per tre giorni (da Taormina) all’Ospedale Civile di Lipari, situato in via Sant’Anna …Nei ritagli di tempo, libero dagli impegni di lavoro, mi dedico alla mia passione fotografica; le fotografie che qui presento sono state tutte realizzate nel mese di febbraio di quest’anno 2022; ho realizzato foto secondo i dettami della fotografia di strada (street photography), ho realizzato alcuni ritratti, avendo incontrato sempre persone alla mano e molto disponibili nel lasciarsi fotografare (sarà forse…che la gente isolana è di mentalità aperta, desiderosa ed abituata a comunicare con gli estranei..?!), alcuni ritratti sono stati eseguiti a persone intente nei loro lavori, alcuni pescatori erano intenti a riparare le loro reti, una signora mi ha mostrato un suo bellissimo lavoro, una coperta da lei realizzata coi ferri a maglia, appesa nel suo balcone (mi ricordava gli scialli che realizzava mia nonna, anch’essi realizzati coi ferri a mano); tutte le foto sono state realizzate nella città di Lipari, tranne tre, realizzate col buio nel porto di Milazzo, scalo di partenza e di arrivo con gli aliscafi (ma c’è anche la nave) per le isole Eolie.

The volcano Etna, in recent days has shown an intense eruptive activity, even with intense phenomena called "lava fountains", continuous jet emissions persisted intensely for many minutes, of very high "fountains" of incandescent magma, very spectacular and uncommon, in particular, which took place on 23-02 at night, it reached exceptional dimensions and heights; I photographed that spectacular eruptions using a telephoto lens, from Taormina; I photographed Jakub Rizman, an excellent harp player, who spread sweet notes throughout the main square of Taormina, creating a fairytale atmosphere (on YouTube I found some musical performances of him);

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of the “Nirvana Club Village” which is located in Belcastro Marina in Calabria (southern Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");
... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the sea to swim; I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge del Nirvana Club Village in Calabria in località Belcastro Marina (Catanzaro); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);
ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in acqua per fare qualche nuotata; ho realizzato alcuni foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.---------------------------------------------------------

My health company, every three months, for three days, sends me to cover a shortage of staff, in the Lipari hospital, (and so do my colleagues), in the little free time I have available, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion.
Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands (they are located north of Sicily, one hour by hydrofoil from Milazzo); Lipari, under the fascist dictatorship, was the seat of forced confinement for political opponents, it was considered "a Sicilian Alcatraz", among all the islands of confinement, Lipari was most likely the most liveable, both for its considerable size that favored the relations of the confined with the inhabitants, both because, to a greater extent than elsewhere, in Lipari, confined persons were allowed to live in private residences, together with their families or other companions. I found written: "Being on an island that belongs to another island means feeling doubly foreign, tied to the will of the gods and nature, where every certainty can be swept away by the waves of that sea that laps it in every intimate part, but it is a sensation that lasts for a few minutes, the Liparoti (the inhabitants of Lipari, ed) know it well (as all Sicilians know), the Greek concept of Xenia, hospitality, is inherent in them, a written rule, is a duty that provides sanctity and protection for the guest ".
Lipari has a long history as a place of detention. It is the island where the common criminals were initially confined, then with the law of November 6, 1926 (the twenty-year fascist period begins with the seizure of power by fascism and Mussolini, officially occurred on October 31, 1922), Lipari thus became the a place to isolate and confine opponents; the life of the confined began immediately after disembarkation, with lodging in the dormitories of the Castle, under the strict surveillance of the police and the fascist militia, every morning, the confined were subjected to the appeal and they received a daily pay of 10 lire; they could move freely in the town, without however exceeding the demarcation line that surrounded the inhabited center; walking was the main activity, the saddest and most melancholy ones pushed to the limit allowed, to see the ferries arrive from Milazzo, aware that the sea was guarded by motorboats armed with machine guns. A situation that will not prevent Nitti, Rosselli and Lussu from fleeing the island, on a moonless night, between 27 and 28 July 1929.

La mia azienda sanitaria, ogni tre mesi, per tre giorni, mi manda a ricoprire una carenza di organico, nell’ospedale di Lipari, (e così anche i miei colleghi), nel poco tempo libero che mi resta a disposizione, mi dedico alla mia passione fotografica.
Lipari è l’isola più grande delle isole Eolie (si trovano a nord della Sicilia, ad un’ora di aliscafo da Milazzo); Lipari , sotto la dittatura fascista, fu sede di confino coatto per gli oppositori politici, essa era considerata “un’Alcatraz siciliana”, fra tutte le isole di confino, Lipari fu molto probabilmente quella più vivibile, sia per le sue notevoli dimensioni che favorivano i rapporti dei confinati con gli abitanti, sia perché, in misura maggiore che altrove, a Lipari veniva consentito ai confinati di abitare in residenze private, insieme ai propri familiari o ad altri compagni. Ho trovato scritto: “Trovarsi su un Isola che appartiene a un’altra Isola, vuol dire sentirsi doppiamente straniero, legato al volere degli dei e della natura, dove ogni certezza può essere spazzata via dalle onde di quel mare che la lambisce in ogni intima parte, ma è una sensazione che dura solo per qualche minuto, i Liparoti (gli abitanti di lipari, n.d.r.)lo sanno bene (come lo sanno tutti i siciliani), è connaturato in loro il concetto greco della Xenia, l'ospitalità, non è una norma scritta, è un atto dovuto che prevede sacralità e protezione per l’ospite”.
Lipari ha una lunga storia come luogo di detenzione. È l’isola dove all’inizio erano confinati i delinquenti comuni, poi con la legge del 6 novembre 1926 (il ventennio fascista inizia con la presa del potere del fascismo e di Mussolini, ufficialmente avvenuta il 31 ottobre 1922), Lipari divenne così il luogo dove isolare e confinare gli oppositori; la vita del confinato iniziava subito dopo lo sbarco, con l’alloggio nelle camerate del Castello, sotto la rigida sorveglianza della polizia e della milizia fascista, ogni mattina, i confinati erano sottoposti all’appello e alla consegna della "mazzetta", ossia la paga giornaliera di 10 lire; potevano circolare liberamente nel paese, senza però superare la linea di demarcazione che circondava il centro abitato; passeggiare era la principale attività, i più tristi e malinconici si spingevano fino al limite consentito per vedere arrivare i traghetti da Milazzo, consapevoli che il mare era sorvegliato da motoscafi armati di mitragliatrici. Situazione che non impedirà a Nitti, Rosselli e Lussu di fuggire dall’isola, in una notte senza luna, tra il 27 e il 28 luglio del 1929.

Inscribed here are the names of those airmen from the Eleventh Air Force, Fleet Air Wing Four, and Royal Canadian Air Force who died or suffered captivity in the defense of Alaska while serving in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.

Ann Packer - Ann Elizabeth Packer MBE (born 8 March 1942) is an English former sprinter, hurdler and long jumper. She won a gold medal in the 800 metres and a silver in the 400 metres at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
In 1959 Packer won the English Schools 100 yards title. Next year she competed internationally in the long jump. She attended Didcot Girls' Grammar School (now Didcot Girls' School). In 1962, she reached the finals in the 200 metres at the European Championships and in the 80 metres hurdles at the Commonwealth Games; she was also part of the 4 × 110 yards relay team that won two medals at these competitions. In 1963 she focused on the 400 metres, and already by her fourth 400 m race ran a world-level time of 53.6 seconds. Packer became the national 440 yards champion after winning the British WAAA Championships title at the 1964 WAAA Championships. When she was selected for the 1964 British Olympic team Packer worked as a physical education teacher at Coombe County Girls' School, New Malden, Surrey. At the Olympics she shared a room with long jump gold medallist Mary Rand. Packer was hoping to win the 400 metres, but was beaten into second place by Betty Cuthbert of Australia, despite setting a new European record at 52.20 seconds. Disappointed, Packer planned to skip the 800 m event and have a shopping trip instead, until her fiancé, Robbie Brightwell persuaded her to compete. Before the Olympics, Packer only had five domestic 800 m races; she had taken up a longer distance to improve her stamina, and earned the third British spot at the last minute. In her heat and semi-final Packer finished fifth and third, running 2:12.6 and 2:06.0 respectively, being beaten by French runner Maryvonne Dupureur, clocking 2:04.5 and 2:04.1. She thus started the final the second slowest of the eight contestants, having raced at the distance only seven times before. Packer was sixth at 400 m, lying behind Dupureur. She began her sprint to the finish with about 150 m to go, moved up to third at 100 m and took the lead in the final straight, using her sprinting speed to take the gold. She broke the world record with a time of 2:01.1 minutes. Commenting on her win, Packer said "Middle-distance running for women was still in its infancy and the 800 m had only been run in Rome four years earlier for the first time. I knew nothing about the event but being so naive was probably to my advantage; it meant I did not have any limitations in my head regarding what I should or could do. Ignorance proved to be bliss." Packer's winning performance is featured in Tokyo Olympiad, the official documentary of the games directed by Kon Ichikawa.
After winning the gold medal, she announced her retirement at the age of 22 and so had one of the shortest athletics careers of any Olympic gold medallist. It would be another forty years before another British woman, Kelly Holmes, would win the 800 m, despite British men being successful at the distance.

I photographed on a beach a young lady who, leaning her smartphone against a paper bag, in order to self-portray, assumed statuesque and plastic poses for "artistics selfies"; … .I photographed a couple of lovers entwined with each other, regardless of everything that was around "their world"; ... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the wather to swim (even if the sea water is still a little cold now ...); I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...

A trip to…Matera: it is an Italian city of Basilicata, its origins are very ancient, remote; Matera is characterized by the so-called "Sassi", they are a complex of districts consisting of Houses-Caves dug into the rock; in the past these houses-caves were evacuated (in 1952) by order of the then government, to prevent the Sassi from being a tangible manifestation of a poor and backward southern Italy, with the simultaneous construction of districts made up of new houses. Currently things have changed, the Sassi have been rediscovered and enhanced, they host B & Bs, restaurants, museums, exhibition halls in which to find exhibitions of modern art, and, thanks to their rediscovery, the Sassi have been recognized by UNESCO, heritage of humanity, and moreover, Matera has also been elected Capital of Culture of 2019.
The Sassi of Matera are therefore districts that constitute the oldest part of the city, there is the Sasso Barisano, there is the Sasso Caveoso, which are separated from each other by a Big Rock on which there is the "Civita", which is the central part of the old city, on top of which is the cathedral and noble palaces. In ancient times the inhabitants of the Sassi, exploiting the friability of the calcareous rock, created a complex system for conveying water into canals, which led to a network of cisterns, thus water, a precious element for those lands, immediately became available.
The Patron Saint of Matera is the Our Lady of Bruna, whose denomination has uncertain origins (there are various theories), I have photographed Her icon, visible in the Mother Church, and the Her statue with the Little Jesus in Her arms, which is carried in procession. The Sassi, due to their landscape features, were very often chosen to set a large number of films, just to mention a few, "the roaring years" by Luigi Zampa, "the Gospel according to Matthew" by Pier Paolo Pasolini, "Christ stopped at Eboli" by Francesco Rosi," the Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson.
In my wanderings among the Sassi, I met many Street Artists, among them the artist Benedict Popescu, I also met a very nice Capuchin friar with a passion for photography, some sweet girls, Koreans, Beneventans and of Matera.

Una gita a…..Matera: essa è una città italiana della Basilicata, le sue origini sono antichissime, remote; Matera è caratterizzata dai cosiddetti “Sassi”, sono un complesso di rioni costituiti da Case-Grotte scavate nella roccia; queste Case-Grotte in passato furono evacuate (nel 1952) per ordine dell’allora governo, per impedire che i Sassi potessero essere una manifestazione tangibile di una Italia meridionale povera ed arretrata, con la contemporanea realizzazione di rioni costituiti da case nuove. Attualmente le cose sono cambiate, i Sassi sono stati riscoperti e valorizzati, essi ospitano B&B, ristoranti, musei, sale espositive nelle quali trovare anche mostre di arte moderna, e, grazie alla loro riscoperta, i Sassi sono stati riconosciuti dall’UNESCO, patrimonio dell’umanità, ed inoltre, Matera è stata anche eletta Capitale della cultura del 2019.
I Sassi di Matera sono quindi rioni che costituiscono la parte più antica della città, c’è il Sasso Barisano, c’è il Sasso Caveoso, i quali sono separati tra di loro da una rocca sulla quale c’è la Civita, che è la parte centrale della città vecchia, sulla cui sommità si trova la cattedrale ed i palazzi nobiliari. In epoche remote gli abitanti dei Sassi, sfruttando la friabilità della roccia calcarea, si ingegnarono nel realizzare un complesso sistema di convogliamento delle acque in canali, che conducevano in una rete di cisterne, in tal modo l’acqua, elemnto preziosissimo per quelle terre, diveniva immediatamente disponibile.
La Santa Patrona di Matera è la Madonna della Bruna, la cui denominazione ha origini incerte (vi sono varie teorie), io ho fotografato sia la sua icona, visibile nella chiesa Madre, sia la statua con in braccio il Bambinello, che viene portata in processione. I Sassi, per le loro caratteristiche paesaggistiche, sono stati molto spesso scelti per ambientare numerosissimi film, solo per ricordarne alcuni, “gli anni ruggenti” di Luigi Zampa, “il Vangelo secondo Matteo” di Pier Paolo Pasolini, “Cristo si è fermato ad Eboli” di Francesco Rosi, “la Passione di Cristo” di Mel Gibson.
Nel mio peregrinare tra i Sassi, ho incontrato molti Artisti di Strada, tra essi l’artista Benedict Popescu, credo unico nel suo genere, ho incontrato inoltre, un gentilissimo frate cappuccino con la passione della fotografia, delle dolcissime ragazze, Coreane, Beneventane e di Matera.

All the photos I present were taken in towns and on the beaches near Taormina (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "street photography and beach photography"; I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the street or on the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
My thoughts, like a huge multitude of his admirers, go to the great Italian singer-songwriter, composer, musician, enlightened thinker and film director Franco Battiato, who recently passed away at the age of 76: He was born in Riposto (at the time called Ionia, in Sicily) near the town where I live (Taormina), and He lived not far away, on the slopes of Etna, in the village of Milo.
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently by means of a post -production. ---------------------------------------------------------
Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate in paesi e sulle spiagge vicini Taormina (Sicilia-Italia); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography ed alla beach photography”; ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada o sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Il mio pensiero, al pari di una enorme moltitudine di suoi estimatori daltronde, va al grandissimo cantautore, compositore, musicista, pensatore illuminato e regista italiano Franco Battiato, scomparso di recente all'età di 76 anni: egli nacque a Riposto (all'epoca chiamata Ionia) vicino al paese nel quale vivo (Taormina), ed abitava non molto distante, alle pendici dell'Etna, nel paesino di Milo.
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.---------------------------------------------------------

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of the “Nirvana Club Village” which is located in Belcastro Marina in Calabria (southern Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge del Nirvana Club Village in Calabria in località Belcastro Marina (Catanzaro); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);

The Jurassic Coast begins in Exmouth, East Devon, and continues for 95 miles to Old Harry Rocks, near Swanage, Dorset. It is England's only natural World Heritage Site, and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2001 for the outstanding universal value of its rocks, fossils and landforms.

Lednice is a village in South Moravia in the Czech Republic. In 1996 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (together with the twin manor of Valtice) as "an exceptional example of the designed landscape that evolved in the Enlightenment and afterwards under the care of a single family." It contains a palace and the largest park in the country, which covers 200 km2. Since Lednice first passed into the hands of the House of Liechtenstein in the mid-13th century, its fortunes had been tied inseparably to those of that noble family. The palace of Lednice began its life as a Renaissance villa; in the 17th century it became a summer residence of the ruling Princes of Liechtenstein. In 1846–58 the palace was extensively rebuilt in a Neo-Gothic style. The surrounding park is laid out in an English garden style and contains a range of Romantic follies by Joseph Hardtmuth, including the artificial ruins of a medieval castle on the bank of the Dyje River and a solitary sixty-metre minaret, reputedly the tallest outside the Muslim world at the time of its construction (1797–1804).

Fontanna w ogrodach pałacowych w Lednicach :)
Lednice – miasteczko w Czechach w kraju południowomorawskim, niedaleko granicy z Austrią i Słowacją, nad Dyją. Z najduje się tam neogotycki pałac otoczony dwustuhektarowym parkiem. W 1996 roku obiekt ten razem z pałacem w sąsiedniej miejscowości Valtice wpisany został na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. Posiadłość od początku swojego istnienia (pierwsza wzmianka pochodzi z 1222 roku) aż do konfiskaty w 1945 roku należała do arystokratycznego rodu Liechtensteinów. W latach 1544–1585 powstał tu otoczony parkiem renesansowy zamek, wzniesiony w miejscu wcześniejszej gotyckiej twierdzy. Obiekt był później wielokrotnie przebudowywany, dzisiejszy wygląd pałacu zawdzięcza ostatniej architektonicznej stylizacji neogotyckiej w połowie XIX wieku. Park wokół pałacu założony został w XVI stuleciu. Obejmuje dwustuhektarowy obszar sztucznego krajobrazu - wykopano tu rozległe stawy i posadzono las. Wzniesiono tu też romantyczne ruiny miasta i pojedynczy, wysoki na 60 metrów minaret (dziś punkt widokowy dla turystów).

This year I asked myself, like so many Sicilian and non-Sicilian photographers, where to go to take pictures for Good Friday, to discover one of the many popular traditions scattered throughout Sicily, in fact Easter in Sicily is a cathartic moment for those in search of traditional popular events, to be able to tell with words and above all (for those like me) with photographs, a research that may appear not without contradictions, for example for that great Sicilian thinker who was Leonardo Sciascia, for he Sicily cannot be called Christian, which he defined the Sicilian festivals, at best it is only in appearance, in those properly pagan explosions, tolerated by the Church; Sciascia deals with the topic as an introductory essay in the book "Religious feasts in Sicily" (a volume that is still found on flea markets at ever higher prices), illustrated with photographs of a young and still unknown Ferdinando Scianna (in the first edition they made a mistake also his name, Fernando Scianna can be read on the cover), a book that did not fail to raise some controversy precisely because of the introductory note of the Sicilian thinker, appearing in open controversy with the sacredness of that popular devotion (so much so that the book was the subject of a criticized by the newspaper of the Holy See, The Roman Observer), Sciascia writes “What is a religious feast in Sicily? It would be easy to answer that it's anything but a religious holiday. It is, above all, an existential explosion; the explosion of the collective id, where the collectivity exists only at the level of the id. Because it is only in celebration that the Sicilian emerges from his condition as a lonely man, which is after all the condition of his vigilant and painful superego, to find himself part of a class, a class, a city ”. Going back over the thought of Gesualdo Bufalino, Sicilian writer and poet, we find interesting indications on the meaning that the Sicilians give to these traditional popular events, he says "during Easter every Sicilian feels not only a spectator, but an actor, before sorrowful and then exultant, for a Mystery which is its very existence. The time of the event is that of Spring, the season of metamorphosis, just as metamorphic is the very nature of the ritual in which, as in a story from the “Opera dei Pupi” (Puppets work), the fight of Good against Evil is fought. The Deception, the Pain and the Triumph, the Passion, the Death and the Resurrection of Christ are present”.
In short, Easter in Sicily is a recurrence deeply felt throughout the island since ancient times, it has always had the moving participation of the people as its fulcrum, with representations and processions that have become rites and traditions that unequivocally characterize many Sicilian towns, which recall the most salient moments narrated in the Gospels and which recall the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, with processions formed by the various brotherhoods (sometimes with theatrical re-enactments) which have in themselves contents and symbols often coming from the Spanish domination, which in Sicily between the 16th and 17th centuries.
Returning to my question, expressed at the beginning, I had several suggestions from friends and acquaintances, among these a nurse friend of mine, originally from Leonforte, Vincenzo, managed to tickle my interest in a particular way, hence the photographic story that I present, made this year, is that of the Good Friday procession of Leonforte.
The procession begins in the late morning, which proceeds from the Oratory to the Mother Church, through the Piazzale Matrice, during the short journey the Stations of the Cross are meditated on; the procession that advances towards the Cathedral (which will represent Golgotha, because it is there that the Crucifixion of Christ will take place) is started by a large Cross, behind it proceed two long lines of sisters and brothers, there are those who carry cushions with nails, the crown of thorns, and the sheet of the deposition with a "Red Rose" on it; then we find Christ with an uncovered face supported by five brothers, followed by the Virgin of Sorrows, carried on the shoulders of the confraternity of the same name. At noon, inside the Mother Church, once in front of the Cross, the statue with jointed arms is "crucified". When dusk comes everything is ready for the procession, which starts from the Mother Church with the rite of the deposition of Christ down from the Cross, which is taken care of by the priests; the procession winds along an estimated route of just over 7 km, involving the 13 churches of Leonforte (thirteen as there are stations of the “Way of the Cross”), a procession called "'U Mulimentu", a term that indicates the sepulcher which it guarded for three days the body of Christ before his Resurrection (The procession of the “'U Mulimentu” can be dated around 1650). This itinerary also includes the lighting of a huge bonfire placed in the square in front of the " Great Fountain of Leonforte" (built on the remains of an ancient Arab fountain), from whose 24 spouts water does not come out only on Good Friday, as a sign of mourning the death of Christ.

Quest’anno mi ponevo la domanda, come tanti fotografi, siciliani e non, dove recarmi a realizzare fotografie per il Venerdì Santo, alla scoperta di una delle tantissime tradizioni popolari sparse in tutta la Sicilia, la Pasqua infatti in Sicilia, è un momento catartico per chi è alla ricerca di eventi popolari tradizionali, da poter così raccontare con parole e soprattutto (per chi come me) con fotografie, una ricerca che può apparire non priva di contraddizioni, ad esempio per quel grande pensatore Siciliano che fu Leonardo Sciascia, per lui la Sicilia non può dirsi cristiana, che definiva le feste Siciliane, al massimo lo è solo in apparenza, in quelle esplosioni propriamente pagane, tollerate dalla Chiesa; Sciascia affronta l’argomento come saggio introduttivo nel libro “Feste religiose in Sicilia” (volume che si trova ancore sui mercatini dell’usato a prezzi sempre più alti), illustrato con fotografie di un giovane ed ancora sconosciuto Ferdinando Scianna (nella prima edizione sbagliarono anche il suo nome, sulla copertina si legge Fernando Scianna), libro che non mancò di sollevare qualche polemica proprio per la nota introduttiva del pensatore Siciliano, apparendo in aperta polemica con la sacralità di quella devozione popolare (tanto che il libro fu oggetto di una stroncatura da parte del quotidiano della Santa Sede, l’Osservatore Romano), Sciascia scrive “Che cos’ è una festa religiosa in Sicilia? Sarebbe facile rispondere che è tutto, tranne che una festa religiosa. E’, innanzi tutto, un’esplosione esistenziale; l’esplosione dell’es collettivo, dove la collettività esiste soltanto a livello dell’es. Poiché e soltanto nella festa che il siciliano esce dalla sua condizione di uomo solo, che è poi la condizione del suo vigile e doloroso super io, per ritrovarsi parte di un ceto, di una classe, di una città ”. Andando a ripercorrere il pensiero di Gesualdo Bufalino, scrittore e poeta Siciliano, si trovano indicazioni interessanti sul senso che i Siciliano danno a questi eventi popolari tradizionali, egli dice “durante la Pasqua ogni siciliano si sente non solo uno spettatore, ma un attore, prima dolente e poi esultante, per un Mistero che è la sua stessa esistenza. Il tempo dell’evento è quello della Primavera, la stagione della metamorfosi, così come metamorfica è la natura stessa del rito nel quale, come in un racconto dell’Opera dei Pupi, si combatte la lotta del Bene contro il Male. Sono presenti l’Inganno, il Dolore e il Trionfo, la Passione, la Morte e la Resurrezione di Cristo”.
In breve, la Pasqua in Sicilia è una ricorrenza profondamente sentita in tutta l’isola fin dall’antichità, essa ha sempre avuto come fulcro la commossa partecipazione del popolo, con rappresentazioni e processioni divenuti riti e tradizioni che caratterizzano inequivocabilmente numerosissimi centri Siciliani, che rievocano i momenti più salienti narrati nei Vangeli e che ricordano la Passione, la Morte e la Resurrezione di Gesù Cristo, con cortei formati dalle varie confraternite (a volte con rievocazioni teatrali) che hanno in se contenuti e simbologie spesso provenienti dalla dominazione Spagnola, avvenuta in Sicilia tra il XVI ed il XVII secolo.
Ritornando alla mia domanda, espressa all’inizio, ho avuto diversi suggerimenti da parte di amici e conoscenti, tra queste un mio amico infermiere, originario di Leonforte, Vincenzo, è riuscito a solleticare il mio interesse in particolar modo, da qui il racconto fotografico che presento, realizzato quest’anno, è quello della processione del Venerdì Santo di Leonforte.
La processione inizia in tarda mattinata, che procede dall’Oratorio fino alla Chiesa Madre,attraverso il piazzale Matrice, durante il breve tragitto vengono meditate le stazioni della Via Crucis; ad inziare la processione che avanza verso il Duomo (che rappresenterà il Golgota, perché è li dentro che avverrà la Crocifissione del Cristo) è una grande Croce, dietro procedono due lunghe file di consorelle e confrati, ci sono coloro che portano i cuscini con i chiodi, la corona di spine, ed il lenzuolo della deposizione con sopra una “Rosa Rossa”; poi troviamo il Cristo a volto scoperto sorretto da cinque confrati, segue la Vergine Addolorata, portata in spalla dall’omonima confraternita. A mezzogiorno, dentro la Chiesa Madre, giunti dinnanzi alla Croce, la statua con le braccia snodabili viene “crocifissa”. Quando sopraggiunge l’imbrunire tutto è pronto per la processione, che inizia dalla Chiesa Madre col rito della deposizione del Cristo giù dalla Croce, della quale se ne occupano i sacerdoti; la processione si snoda lungo un percorso stimato in poco più di 7 Km, interessando le 13 chiese di Leonforte (tredici quante sono le stazioni della Via Crucis), processione chiamata “’U Mulimentu”, termine che indica il sepolcro che custodì per tre giorni il corpo del Cristo prima della sua Resurrezione (La processione del “’U Mulimentu” è databile intorno al 1650). Questo percorso prevede anche l’accensione di un enorme falò posto sul piazzale antistante la “Gran Fonte di Leonforte” (costruita sui resti di una antica fontana araba), dalle cui 24 cannelle non esce acqua solo il giorno del Venerdì Santo, in segno di lutto per la morte del Cristo.

Easter in Sicily is a deeply felt recurrence throughout the island since ancient times, it has always had the moving participation of the people as its fulcrum, with representations and processions that have become rites and traditions that unequivocally characterize many Sicilian centers, and which evoke the moments most salient narrated in the Gospels and recalling the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, with processions formed by the various brotherhoods (sometimes with theatrical re-enactments) which have in themselves contents and symbols often coming from the Spanish domination, which took place in Sicily between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This year 2022 then, the celebrations returned after two years of absolute stop of the Easter rites due to the pandemic from Covid-19, rites which, however, and necessarily, were carried out with due precautions, in many cases we have witnessed a painful but necessary reduction of the rites (in some centers there were no processions). Here I present a photographic story that I made in the Sicilian town of Enna during the afternoon until late in the evening, after I had been in the town of Villarosa during the day (see the previous photographic story); is the story of the Good Friday procession of Enna, a procession which, for its beauty, theatricality and majesty, represents the most engaging moment of the whole Holy Week in Enna, so much so that UNESCO declared this week a good protected. Attending this rite, so exciting, personally every time induces me a feeling almost of disorientation: seeing the devotees with their typical attire, characterizing their congregation to which they belong, induces me very strongly the feeling of not being in Sicily anymore, in Enna ... but to have been teleported to Spain, perhaps to the city of Seville, or taken back in time when Sicily was under Iberian domination ...! The procession begins on the afternoon of Good Friday, we witness the appearance of numerous hooded brothers (the brotherhoods are 16, while in 1740 there were 34), almost all the brothers are covered with faces, except those with uncovered faces that lead in shoulder the heavy float of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the float of the Dead Christ (normally every year the confreres are about two thousand five hundred - three thousand, but this year, perhaps due to the restrictions caused by the covid, a lower number was recorded) . During the procession, we witness the congregation carrying a whole series of symbols that have a reference to the Passion of Christ, such as the nails of his crucifixion, the ladder, the spear that pierced his side, the sponge soaked in wine vinegar , the dice, the crown of thorns, the scourge, and the rooster (beautiful specimen, alive), and others. The procession of Enna is made up of exclusively male brotherhoods, the only female presence that makes an exception is given by the numerous "nuns", they are girls dressed like the Poor Clares or Carmelite nuns who accompany the various brotherhoods during the procession. The rites end late at night.
La Pasqua in Sicilia è una ricorrenza profondamente sentita in tutta l’isola fin dall’antichità, essa ha sempre avuto come fulcro la commossa partecipazione del popolo, con rappresentazioni e processioni divenuti riti e tradizioni che caratterizzano inequivocabilmente numerosissimi centri Siciliani, che rievocano i momenti più salienti narrati nei Vangeli e che ricordano la Passione, la Morte e la Resurrezione di Gesù Cristo, con cortei formati dalle varie confraternite (a volte con rievocazioni teatrali) che hanno in se contenuti e simbologie spesso provenienti dalla dominazione Spagnola, avvenuta in Sicilia tra il XVI ed il XVII secolo. Quest’anno 2022 poi, le celebrazioni sono ritornate dopo due anni di assoluto fermo dei riti pasquali a causa della pandemia da Covid-19, riti che comunque, e necessariamente, si sono svolti con le dovute precauzioni, in molti casi si è assistito ad una dolorosa ma necessaria riduzione dei riti (in alcuni centri le processioni non ci sono state). Qui presento un racconto fotografico che ho realizzato nella cittadina siciliana di Enna durante il pomeriggio fino a sera inoltrata, dopo che ero stato durante il giorno nel paese di Villarosa (vedi il racconto fotografico precedente); è il racconto della processione del Venerdì Santo di Enna, processione che, per la sua bellezza, teatralità e maestosità, rappresenta il momento più coinvolgente di tutta la Settimana Santa di Enna, tant'è che l'UNESCO ha dichiarato questa settimana, un bene protetto. Assistere a questo rito, così emozionante, personalmente ogni volta mi induce una sensazione quasi di spaesamento: nel vedere i devoti con i loro tipici abbigliamenti, caratterizzanti la loro congregazione di appartenenza, mi induce fortissima la sensazione di non trovarmi più in Sicilia, ad Enna...ma di essere stato teletrasportato in Spagna, magari nella città di Siviglia, oppure portato a ritroso nel tempo quando la Sicilia era sotto la dominazione Iberica...! La processione ha inizio il pomeriggio del Venerdì Santo, si assiste all'apparire di numerosissimi confrati incappucciati (le confraternite sono 16, mentre nel 1740 erano ben 34), quasi tutti i confrati sono a volto coperto, tranne quelli a volto scoperto che portano in spalla le pesanti vare (i fercoli) della Madonna Addolorata, e quella del Cristo Morto (normalmente ogni anno i confrati sono circa duemilacinquecento - tremila, però quest'anno, forse a causa delle restrizioni causate dal covid, si è registrato un numero inferiore). Si assiste durante la processione, alla congregazione che porta tutta una serie di simboli che hanno un riferimento con la Passione di Cristo, come i chiodi della sua crocifissione, la scala, la lancia che gli trafisse il costato, la spugna imbevuta di aceto di vino, i dadi, la corona di spine, il flagello, ed il gallo (bellissimo esemplare, vivo), ed altri. La processione di Enna è composta da confraternite esclusivamente maschili, l'unica presenza femminile che vi fa eccezione è data dalle numerose “monachelle”, sono delle bambine vestite come le monache clarisse o le monache carmelitane che accompagnano le varie confraternite durante la processione. I riti terminano a notte fonda.

Sun, Beaches, Sea, Summer, but also ... Friendship, Fun, Loneliness, Nostalgia and ... a great desire to live with the great desire to return to the normal life of always before the pandemic (to always keep in mind that, even if the worse than the Covid-19 pandemic, it now seems to be behind us, the crisis is certainly not to be considered over just because mortality has reduced): I present here, on Flickr, a collection of exhibitions made in this hot summer, with traceable photographs, almost entirely, in the "beach photography" genre. The photographs were all taken in July-August 2022, on the beaches of the east coast of Sicily, and of the Ionian coast of Calabria.

Sole, Spiagge, Mare, Estate, ma anche ...Amicizia, Divertimento, Solitudine, Nostalgia e… tanta voglia di vivere col grande desiderio di ritornare alla vita normale di sempre ante-pandemia (da tenere sempre a mente che, anche se il peggio della pandemia da Covid-19, sembra ormai alle spalle, la crisi non è certo da considerarsi terminata solo perché la mortalità si è ridotta): presento qui, su Flickr, una raccolta di esposizioni realizzate in questa calda estate, con fotografie riconducibili, per la quasi totalità, al genere “beach photography”. Le fotografie sono state tutte realizzate nel mese di Luglio-Agosto 2022, sulle spiagge della costa orientale della Sicilia, e della costa ionica della Calabria.

This summer 2021 was hit by a very strong heat wave, it was called Lucifer, an African subtropical anticyclone, with temperatures in southern Italy that reached very high values, in some centers temperatures of 47 ° C were recorded and more (the European record was recorded in Syracuse with + 48.8 ° C): due to the great heat, the African subtropical anticyclone was given the name of "Lucifer", but we are sure that the Great Poet Dante Alighieri, father of Italian language, and today is the 700th year from the date of his death, is it okay to have chosen the name of Lucifer for this incredible heat wave ??! ... Lucifer was the most beautiful and luminous angel of creation, rebelled against God out of pride and envy in league with other rebel angels, he was defeated by the Archangel Michael, fell down from heaven until he reached the center of the earth, transforming himself into a hideous monster and causing the funnel-shaped chasm that will become the seat of Hell; Dante describes Lucifer in Canto XXXIV of Hell of the Divine Comedy, he (and this was what I wanted to arrive at) is stuck from the waist down "in the ice" ..! ... in fact the King of Hell is in a frozen lake fed by the Cocito river, and even the damned who are in that place are immersed in the ice ..! ... Dante and Virgil will use the body of Lucifer as if it were a ladder climbing high clinging to it, Dante and Virgil will thus walk a path hidden and will finally go out into the open air "to see the stars again".
All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of Taormina and its surroundings (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");
... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the sea to swim (even if the sea water is still a little cold now ...); I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production
Questa estate 2021 è stata colta da un'ondata di caldo molto forte, è stata chiamata Lucifero, causa di ciò un anticiclone subtropicale africano, con temperature nel meridione d’Italia che hanno toccato valori molto alti, in alcuni centri si sono registrate temperature di 47°C e più (a Siracusa è stato registrato il record europeo con +48.8°C): per via del grande caldo all’anticiclone subtropicale africano è stato dato il nome di “Lucifero”, ma siamo sicuri che il grandissimo Poeta Dante Alighieri, padre della Lingua Italiana, ed oggi ricorre il 700° anno dalla data della sua morte, sia d'accordo con l’aver scelto il nome di Lucifero per questa incredibile ondata di caldo??!...Lucifero era l’angelo più bello e luminoso del Creato, ribellatosi a Dio per superbia ed invidia in combutta con altri angeli ribelli, fu sconfitto dall’arcangelo Michele, precipitò giù dal cielo fino a raggiungere il centro della terra, trasformandosi in un mostro orrendo e causando la voragine a forma di imbuto che diventerà sede dell’Inferno; Dante descrive Lucifero nel Canto XXXIV dell'Inferno della Divina Commedia, egli (ed era a questo che desideravo arrivare) è conficcato dalla cintola in giù “nel ghiaccio”..!...infatti il Re dell’Inferno si trova in un lago ghiacciato alimentato dal fiume Cocito, ed anche i dannati che si trovano in quel luogo sono immersi nel ghiaccio..!...Dante e Virgilio useranno il corpo di Lucifero come se fosse una scala salendo in alto aggrappati ad esso, Dante e Virgilio percorreranno così un sentiero nascosto ed usciranno all’aria aperta finalmente «a riveder le stelle».
Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge di Taormina e dintorni (Sicilia-Italia); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);
ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in mare per fare qualche nuotata (anche se l’acqua del mare adesso è ancora un po’ fredda…); ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

The inscribed rear of a mourning ring (the front having a small piece of the subjects hair mounted in it) for Ann Hodgson, who died 12th May 1826, aged 54. The ring is for a small finger, being about 19mm (3/4") internal diameter. The ring has come to us from my wife's side of the family, but as yet I have been unable to trace the link.

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of Taormina and its surroundings (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");
I photographed on a beach a young lady who, leaning her smartphone against a paper bag, in order to self-portray, assumed statuesque and plastic poses for "artistics selfies"; … .I photographed a couple of lovers entwined with each other, regardless of everything that was around "their world"; ... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the wather to swim (even if the sea water is still a little cold now ...); I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge di Taormina e dintorni (Sicilia-Italia); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);
ho fotografato su di una spiaggia una giovane signora che, appoggiato ad una busta di carta il suo smartphone, in modo da autoritrarsi, assumeva delle pose statuarie e plastiche da “selfie artistico”; ….ho fotografato una coppia di innamorati tra loro avvinghiati, incuranti di tutto ciò che stava attorno “al loro mondo”; …ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in acqua per fare qualche nuotata (anche se l’acqua del mare adesso è ancora un po’ fredda…); ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

This is a photographic story of mine, a little late, it's not something new that I'm posting late, they are photographs taken at the beginning of August this year, during the week of summer holidays spent with my family, in a pleasant holiday village in Ionian Calabria, near Le Castella, a hamlet of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, in the province of Crotone: sun and kilometre-long beaches where you can take long, extremely relaxing walks, beaches that seem to have remained intact since the dawn of time with a coastline that has a few anthropized, incorporated in the village there is a kitesurfing sports club attended by very good and very nice boys and girls, expert male and female athletes, who I thank for allowing me to take photographs of both their performances and their portraits. The area was characterized by a completely sandy seabed, free of dangerous rocks, and by the almost constant presence of wind which, as if by magic, appeared punctually in the afternoon, ideal for practicing this beautiful and fascinating sport. The village offers canoes and pedal boats for anyone who wants to experience the sea beyond the shore. All idyllic then... and yet, and yet... during my very long morning walk in search of some "photographic situation", I meet a very kind gentleman with a fishing rod, with whom I chat for a while, it was atrocious to hear from him... of the massacre of the migrants who died on the beach of Steccato di Cutro, I didn't know we were near that beach, the fisherman told me that three of the bodies recovered in that very sad shipwreck were found right on the same beach where we were talking: the shipwreck had occurred on the night between 25 and 26 February 2023, it was a gulet that left Turkey. News from 18 April of this year 2023 is that the deaths of the massacre of migrants in Steccato di Cutro, in the province of Crotone, were confirmed to be 94, including 35 minors, around eighty were the survivors, the precise number of the dead it is not known, since it is unknown how many passengers were on board the shipwrecked boat, even if, according to testimonies, there were at least 180 migrants on the boat. Learning that those places so full of beauty, serenity, joy... had been the scene of that terrible tragedy, was a reason for personal reflection and meditation... people who died not only at the bottom of the sea, but also who died burned under the sun violent desert in an attempt to reach the starting points located on the African coast, and then reach Sicily or Calabria. Un mio racconto fotografico questo, un po’ in ritardo, non è una novità che io posti in ritardo, sono fotografie realizzate l’inizio di agosto di quest’anno, durante la settimana di ferie estive trascorsa insieme alla mia famiglia, in un ameno villaggio vacanze della Calabria Ionica, vicino Le Castella, frazione di Isola di Capo Rizzuto, in provincia di Crotone: sole e spiagge chilometriche dove fare lunghissime passeggiate estremamente rilassanti, spiagge che sembrano essere rimaste intatte dalla notte dei tempi con una costa poco antropizzata, inglobato nel villaggio un club sportivo di kitesurf frequentato da bravissimi e simpaticissimi ragazzi e ragazze, esperti atleti ed atlete, che ringrazio per avermi concesso di realizzare fotografie sia delle loro esibizioni, sia dei loro ritratti. La zona era caratterizzata dal fondale completamente sabbioso, privo di pericolose rocce, e dalla quasi costante presenza di vento che, come per magia, si presentava puntuale nel pomeriggio, ideale per praticare questo bellissimo ed affascinante sport. Il villaggio mette a disposizione canoe e pedalò per chiunque voglia vivere il mare oltre il bagnasciuga. Tutto idilliaco quindi…eppure, eppure…durante una mia lunghissima passeggiata mattutina alla ricerca di qualche “situazione fotografica”, conosco un gentilissimo signore con una canna da pesca, col quale mi intrattengo a conversare un po’, atroce è stato sapere da lui…della strage dei migranti morti sulla spiaggia di Steccato di Cutro, non sapevo ci trovassimo nelle vicinanze di quella spiaggia, il pescatore mi disse che tre dei corpi recuperati in quel tristissimo naufragio, furono trovati proprio sulla stessa spiaggia dove stavamo parlando: il naufragio era avvenuto nella notte tra il 25 ed il 26 febbraio 2023, era un caicco partito dalla Turchia. Notizia del 18 aprile di quest’anno 2023 è che i morti della strage di migranti a Steccato di Cutro, in provincia di Crotone, sono risultati essere accertati 94, tra cui 35 minori, una ottantina sono risultati i sopravvissuti, il numero preciso dei morti non si conosce, poiché è ignoto quanti passeggeri fossero a bordo del barcone naufragato, anche se, secondo le testimonianze, c’erano sul barcone almeno 180 migranti. Venire a conoscenza che quei luoghi così carichi di bellezza, di serenità, di allegria… erano stati teatro di quella terribile tragedia, è stato motivo di personale raccoglimento e meditazione … persone morte non solo in fondo al mare, ma anche morte arse sotto il sole violento del deserto nel tentativo di raggiungere i luoghi di partenza siti sulla costa africana, per poi raggiungere la Sicilia o la Calabria. "the help" .... ... yesterday Baby Jesus was born, for those who are Christians this represents an immense act of God's love for his children ... and it is to that God-Man that we often resort to asking for help .... who among us ... has never needed help ...?! .....
I photographed people I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability: I met Antonio and his girlfriend, who came to Taormina to spend the last day together, the next day Antonio will leave to go very far, unfortunately leaving his beloved, to see her again who knows when ... I met the Japanese companion of my dear friend Cesare, who flew to the sky many years ago, I knew about his companion, but I had never met her before ... I photographed a sweet Chinese girl that I met on three different occasions, each time with a little more confidence….
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

"the help"...."l'aiuto" ...ieri è nato Gesù Bambino, per chi è cristiano questo rappresenta un atto d’amore immenso di Dio per i suoi figli...ed è a quel Dio-Uomo che spesso ricorriamo chiedendo aiuto.... chi tra noi...non ha mai avuto bisogno di aiuto...?!.....
ho fotografato persone che non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità: ho incontrato Antonio e la sua ragazza, venuti a Taormina per trascorrere l'ultimo giorno insieme, il giorno successivo Antonio partirà per andare molto lontano, lasciando purtroppo la sua amata, per rivederla poi chissà quando….Ho conosciuto la compagna Giapponese del mio carissimo amico Cesare, volato in cielo tanti anni fa, sapevo di questa sua compagna, ma non l’avevo mai conosciuta prima…Ho fotografato una dolce ragazza Cinese che ho incontrato in tre occasioni diverse, ogni volta con un pizzico di confidenza in più….
sono queste solo alcune storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

My health company, every three months, for three days, sends me to cover a shortage of staff, in the Lipari hospital, (and so do my colleagues), in the little free time I have available, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion.
Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands (they are located north of Sicily, one hour by hydrofoil from Milazzo); Lipari, under the fascist dictatorship, was the seat of forced confinement for political opponents, it was considered "a Sicilian Alcatraz", among all the islands of confinement, Lipari was most likely the most liveable, both for its considerable size that favored the relations of the confined with the inhabitants, both because, to a greater extent than elsewhere, in Lipari, confined persons were allowed to live in private residences, together with their families or other companions. I found written: "Being on an island that belongs to another island means feeling doubly foreign, tied to the will of the gods and nature, where every certainty can be swept away by the waves of that sea that laps it in every intimate part, but it is a sensation that lasts for a few minutes, the Liparoti (the inhabitants of Lipari, ed) know it well (as all Sicilians know), the Greek concept of Xenia, hospitality, is inherent in them, a written rule, is a duty that provides sanctity and protection for the guest ".
Lipari has a long history as a place of detention. It is the island where the common criminals were initially confined, then with the law of November 6, 1926 (the twenty-year fascist period begins with the seizure of power by fascism and Mussolini, officially occurred on October 31, 1922), Lipari thus became the a place to isolate and confine opponents; the life of the confined began immediately after disembarkation, with lodging in the dormitories of the Castle, under the strict surveillance of the police and the fascist militia, every morning, the confined were subjected to the appeal and they received a daily pay of 10 lire; they could move freely in the town, without however exceeding the demarcation line that surrounded the inhabited center; walking was the main activity, the saddest and most melancholy ones pushed to the limit allowed, to see the ferries arrive from Milazzo, aware that the sea was guarded by motorboats armed with machine guns. A situation that will not prevent Nitti, Rosselli and Lussu from fleeing the island, on a moonless night, between 27 and 28 July 1929.

La mia azienda sanitaria, ogni tre mesi, per tre giorni, mi manda a ricoprire una carenza di organico, nell’ospedale di Lipari, (e così anche i miei colleghi), nel poco tempo libero che mi resta a disposizione, mi dedico alla mia passione fotografica.
Lipari è l’isola più grande delle isole Eolie (si trovano a nord della Sicilia, ad un’ora di aliscafo da Milazzo); Lipari , sotto la dittatura fascista, fu sede di confino coatto per gli oppositori politici, essa era considerata “un’Alcatraz siciliana”, fra tutte le isole di confino, Lipari fu molto probabilmente quella più vivibile, sia per le sue notevoli dimensioni che favorivano i rapporti dei confinati con gli abitanti, sia perché, in misura maggiore che altrove, a Lipari veniva consentito ai confinati di abitare in residenze private, insieme ai propri familiari o ad altri compagni. Ho trovato scritto: “Trovarsi su un Isola che appartiene a un’altra Isola, vuol dire sentirsi doppiamente straniero, legato al volere degli dei e della natura, dove ogni certezza può essere spazzata via dalle onde di quel mare che la lambisce in ogni intima parte, ma è una sensazione che dura solo per qualche minuto, i Liparoti (gli abitanti di lipari, n.d.r.)lo sanno bene (come lo sanno tutti i siciliani), è connaturato in loro il concetto greco della Xenia, l'ospitalità, non è una norma scritta, è un atto dovuto che prevede sacralità e protezione per l’ospite”.
Lipari ha una lunga storia come luogo di detenzione. È l’isola dove all’inizio erano confinati i delinquenti comuni, poi con la legge del 6 novembre 1926 (il ventennio fascista inizia con la presa del potere del fascismo e di Mussolini, ufficialmente avvenuta il 31 ottobre 1922), Lipari divenne così il luogo dove isolare e confinare gli oppositori; la vita del confinato iniziava subito dopo lo sbarco, con l’alloggio nelle camerate del Castello, sotto la rigida sorveglianza della polizia e della milizia fascista, ogni mattina, i confinati erano sottoposti all’appello e alla consegna della "mazzetta", ossia la paga giornaliera di 10 lire; potevano circolare liberamente nel paese, senza però superare la linea di demarcazione che circondava il centro abitato; passeggiare era la principale attività, i più tristi e malinconici si spingevano fino al limite consentito per vedere arrivare i traghetti da Milazzo, consapevoli che il mare era sorvegliato da motoscafi armati di mitragliatrici. Situazione che non impedirà a Nitti, Rosselli e Lussu di fuggire dall’isola, in una notte senza luna, tra il 27 e il 28 luglio del 1929.
Ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per le strade di Lipari... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

All the photos I present were taken in towns and on the beaches near Taormina (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "street photography and beach photography"; I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the street or on the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
My thoughts, like a huge multitude of his admirers, go to the great Italian singer-songwriter, composer, musician, enlightened thinker and film director Franco Battiato, who recently passed away at the age of 76: He was born in Riposto (at the time called Ionia, in Sicily) near the town where I live (Taormina), and He lived not far away, on the slopes of Etna, in the village of Milo.
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently by means of a post -production. ---------------------------------------------------------

Il mio pensiero, al pari di una enorme moltitudine di suoi estimatori daltronde, va al grandissimo cantautore, compositore, musicista, pensatore illuminato e regista italiano Franco Battiato, scomparso di recente all'età di 76 anni: egli nacque a Riposto (all'epoca chiamata Ionia) vicino al paese nel quale vivo (Taormina), ed abitava non molto distante, alle pendici dell'Etna, nel paesino di Milo.

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of Taormina and its surroundings (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");
I photographed on a beach a young lady who, leaning her smartphone against a paper bag, in order to self-portray, assumed statuesque and plastic poses for "artistics selfies"; … .I photographed a couple of lovers entwined with each other, regardless of everything that was around "their world"; ... Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge di Taormina e dintorni (Sicilia-Italia); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);
ho fotografato su di una spiaggia una giovane signora che, appoggiato ad una busta di carta il suo smartphone, in modo da autoritrarsi, assumeva delle pose statuarie e plastiche da “selfie artistico”; ….ho fotografato una coppia di innamorati tra loro avvinghiati, incuranti di tutto ciò che stava attorno “al loro mondo”; …ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in acqua per fare qualche nuotata (anche se l’acqua del mare adesso è ancora un po’ fredda…); ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

Even in Sicily bad weather has arrived, now as I write, there is a furious storm in progress, yesterday "it was raining ashes" coming from a giant cloud spit from the Etna volcano .... (always umbrellas ... it is ....!) ... but until yesterday .... (except for a few rainy days) the good weather and, thanks to the warm sirocco and libeccio winds, coming from Africa ... have enticed the swimmers (among them the many tourists present in Taormina and surroundings ... ) to go to the beaches; certainly the situation has changed compared to the hottest months of July and August, in which months the beaches were always very crowded, in the last days of the end of October, however, the beaches presented themselves with the most distant bathers .... with presences constant, but not excessive.
..... with this series that I am about to post, with the arrival of the bad season, at least for this year, I abandon the photographs taken on the beaches.

Anche in Sicilia è arrivato il cattivo tempo, ora mentre scrivo, c’è un furioso temporale in corso, ieri “pioveva cenere” proveniente da una gigantesca nuvola sputata dal vulcano Etna….(sempre di ombrelli…si tratta….!) …ma fino ad avant’ieri….(tranne qualche giornata piovosa) il bel tempo e, complici i venti caldi di scirocco e di libeccio, provenienti dall’Africa… hanno invogliato i bagnanti (tra questi i molti turisti presenti a Taormina e dintorni…) a frequentare le spiagge; certamente è cambiata la situazione rispetto ai mesi più caldi di luglio e di agosto, nei quali mesi le spiagge erano sempre molto affollate, in questi ultimi giorni di fine ottobre invece le spiagge si sono presentate con i bagnanti più distanti tra loro….con presenze costanti, ma non eccessive.
….. con questa serie che mi appresto a postare, con l’arrivo oramai della brutta stagione, almeno per quest’anno, abbandono le fotografie colte sulle spiagge.

The Gelati Monastery, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Founded in 1106 AD by King David IV (David the Builder, ruled 1089-1125 AD) and the site of his tomb, a wall surrounds the monastery complex within which are: The 12th century Church of the Nativity of the Virgin where I took this photograph; Two 13th century churches, the Church of St. George and the Church of St. Nicholas; A 13th century bell tower; The 12th century Academy of Gelati building, which was a center of science and education; And other structures including monk’s quarters.
UNESCO notes: “The monastery is richly decorated with mural paintings from the 12th to 17th centuries, as well as a 12th century mosaic in the apse of the main church, depicting the Virgin with Child flanked by archangels. Its high architectural quality, outstanding decoration, size and clear spatial quality combine to offer a vivid expression of the artistic idiom of the architecture of the Georgian “Golden Age” and its almost completely intact surroundings allow an understanding of the intended fusion between architecture and landscape.” In addition to the tomb of David IV, other royal graves are found on the grounds including those of Demetrius I (died 1156), George III (died 1184), Vakhtang II (died 1292), George V (died 1346), Bagrat VI (died 1748), and Solomon II (died 1815). Tradition holds that Queen Tamar the Great is buried here, however her tomb has yet to be found.

All the photos I present were taken on the two suggestive beaches overlooking Taormina, the Isola Bella beach and the Mazzarò bay beach respectively; these two beaches, both known for their enchanting beauty, have been the scene of stories that few know, time has only partially healed ancient tears; Mazzarò was chosen by a family of unfortunate Jews made up of four people, who, persecuted by the Nazi-Fascist ferocity, decided to commit suicide by tying all four together with a rope, then weighed down with stones, they let themselves slip from a boat into the deep waters near the Mazzarò rock, called “Scogghia Longa”; the "Isola Bella" (its original name was "rock of Santo Stefano") was named by an English noblewoman, Lady Florence Trevelyan, a relative of Queen Victoria, who did so much for Taormina (a woman of truly extraordinary qualities), tells of a young English officer who died on a ship on which he was embarked, a Brigantine who patrolled the Strait of Messina to discourage Napoleonic soldiers from disembarking from Calabria in Sicily, the captain out of respect for the Royal Family (to which, let's remember, Lady Florence belonged), instead of entrusting her body to the sea as was the custom at the time, she had it buried on top of the island. Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle due suggestive spiagge prospicienti Taormina, rispettivamente la spiaggia dell’Isola Bella, e la spiaggia della baia di Mazzarò; queste due spiagge, entrambe conosciute per la loro incantevole bellezza, sono state teatro di storie che pochi conoscono, il tempo ha solo in parte guarito antiche lacrime; Mazzarò fu scelta da una famiglia di sventurati ebrei composta da quattro persone, i quali, perseguitati dalla ferocia nazi-fascista, decisero di suicidarsi legandosi tutti e quattro tra loro con una corda, poi appesantiti con pietre, si lasciarono scivolare da una barca nelle profonde acque nei pressi dello scoglio di Mazzarò, chiamato “scogghia Longa”; l’Isola Bella (il suo nome originario era “scoglio di Santo Stefano”) fu così chiamata da un nobildonna inglese, lady Florence Trevelyan, parente della regina Vittoria, che tanto si prodigò per Taormina (una donna dalle qualità veramente straordinarie), si narra di un giovane ufficiale inglese che morì su di una nave sulla quale era imbarcato, un Brigantino che pattugliava lo stretto di Messina per scoraggiare i soldati Napoleonici dallo sbarcare dalla Calabria in Sicilia, il capitano per rispetto della Famiglia Reale (alla quale, ricordiamoci, apparteneva lady Florence), invece di affidarne il corpo al mare come si usava all’epoca, lo fece seppellire in cima all’Isola. A trip to…Matera: it is an Italian city of Basilicata, its origins are very ancient, remote; Matera is characterized by the so-called "Sassi", they are a complex of districts consisting of Houses-Caves dug into the rock; in the past these houses-caves were evacuated (in 1952) by order of the then government, to prevent the Sassi from being a tangible manifestation of a poor and backward southern Italy, with the simultaneous construction of districts made up of new houses. Currently things have changed, the Sassi have been rediscovered and enhanced, they host B & Bs, restaurants, museums, exhibition halls in which to find exhibitions of modern art, and, thanks to their rediscovery, the Sassi have been recognized by UNESCO, heritage of humanity, and moreover, Matera has also been elected Capital of Culture of 2019.
The Sassi of Matera are therefore districts that constitute the oldest part of the city, there is the Sasso Barisano, there is the Sasso Caveoso, which are separated from each other by a Big Rock on which there is the "Civita", which is the central part of the old city, on top of which is the cathedral and noble palaces. In ancient times the inhabitants of the Sassi, exploiting the friability of the calcareous rock, created a complex system for conveying water into canals, which led to a network of cisterns, thus water, a precious element for those lands, immediately became available.
The Patron Saint of Matera is the Our Lady of Bruna, whose denomination has uncertain origins (there are various theories), I have photographed Her icon, visible in the Mother Church, and the Her statue with the Little Jesus in Her arms, which is carried in procession. The Sassi, due to their landscape features, were very often chosen to set a large number of films, just to mention a few, "the roaring years" by Luigi Zampa, "the Gospel according to Matthew" by Pier Paolo Pasolini, "Christ stopped at Eboli" by Francesco Rosi," the Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson.
In my wanderings among the Sassi, I met many Street Artists, among them the artist Benedict Popescu, I also met a very nice Capuchin friar with a passion for photography, some sweet girls, Koreans, Beneventans and of Matera.

Una gita a…..Matera: essa è una città italiana della Basilicata, le sue origini sono antichissime, remote; Matera è caratterizzata dai cosiddetti “Sassi”, sono un complesso di rioni costituiti da Case-Grotte scavate nella roccia; queste Case-Grotte in passato furono evacuate (nel 1952) per ordine dell’allora governo, per impedire che i Sassi potessero essere una manifestazione tangibile di una Italia meridionale povera ed arretrata, con la contemporanea realizzazione di rioni costituiti da case nuove. Attualmente le cose sono cambiate, i Sassi sono stati riscoperti e valorizzati, essi ospitano B&B, ristoranti, musei, sale espositive nelle quali trovare anche mostre di arte moderna, e, grazie alla loro riscoperta, i Sassi sono stati riconosciuti dall’UNESCO, patrimonio dell’umanità, ed inoltre, Matera è stata anche eletta Capitale della cultura del 2019.
I Sassi di Matera sono quindi rioni che costituiscono la parte più antica della città, c’è il Sasso Barisano, c’è il Sasso Caveoso, i quali sono separati tra di loro da una rocca sulla quale c’è la Civita, che è la parte centrale della città vecchia, sulla cui sommità si trova la cattedrale ed i palazzi nobiliari. In epoche remote gli abitanti dei Sassi, sfruttando la friabilità della roccia calcarea, si ingegnarono nel realizzare un complesso sistema di convogliamento delle acque in canali, che conducevano in una rete di cisterne, in tal modo l’acqua, elemnto preziosissimo per quelle terre, diveniva immediatamente disponibile.
La Santa Patrona di Matera è la Madonna della Bruna, la cui denominazione ha origini incerte (vi sono varie teorie), io ho fotografato sia la sua icona, visibile nella chiesa Madre, sia la statua con in braccio il Bambinello, che viene portata in processione. I Sassi, per le loro caratteristiche paesaggistiche, sono stati molto spesso scelti per ambientare numerosissimi film, solo per ricordarne alcuni, “gli anni ruggenti” di Luigi Zampa, “il Vangelo secondo Matteo” di Pier Paolo Pasolini, “Cristo si è fermato ad Eboli” di Francesco Rosi, “la Passione di Cristo” di Mel Gibson.
Nel mio peregrinare tra i Sassi, ho incontrato molti Artisti di Strada, tra essi l’artista Benedict Popescu, credo unico nel suo genere, ho incontrato inoltre, un gentilissimo frate cappuccino con la passione della fotografia, delle dolcissime ragazze, Coreane, Beneventane e di Matera.

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;
I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
I came across a mural whose faces were erased with a spray can: it was deliberately defaced, outraged, whoever did this, for political purposes and for reasons of opportunism, then published this gesture on Facebook, as if it were a trophy, causing serious damage not only to the whole community of Taormina, but also to anyone who comes to Taormina, who must be able to enjoy its natural, cultural and artistic beauties: now this mural created by the street artist TVBOY entitled "Saint Carola protectress of refugees" has been horribly mutilated by her beauty, but, even so ... it cannot fail to arouse emotion, because that black spray that has erased the faces, (to me) seems to have given the work even more voice, the voice of suffering of those who travel to other worlds, knowing they are going to meet enormous risks and a future full of uncertainties: a future as black as that spray; so I wanted to know (and photograph) the other two murals by TVBOY, an artist of Sicilian origins, one depicts the pop singer Mahmood, a work entitled "San Mahmood", the other work is titled "Homage to the master Andrea Camilleri";
I photographed the spectacular eruption of the Etna volcano which took place on the evening of 01/18-2021, using a telephoto lens;
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.
Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina;
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
mi sono imbattuto in un murales i cui volti sono stati cancellati con una bomboletta spray: è stato volutamente deturpato, oltraggiato, chi ha fatto ciò, per scopi politici e per motivi di opportunismo, ha poi pubblicato tale gesto su Facebook, come se fosse un trofeo, arrecando un danno gravissimo non solo a tutta la comunità di Taormina, ma anche a chiunque venga a Taormina, che deve poter godere delle sue bellezze naturali, culturali ed artistiche: adesso questo murales realizzato ad opera dello street artist TVBOY intitolato “Santa Carola protettrice dei rifugiati” è stato orrendamente mutilato della sua bellezza, ma, anche così…non può non suscitare commozione, perché quello spray nero che ha cancellato i volti, (a me) sembra aver dato all’opera ancora più voce, la voce della sofferenza di chi si mette in viaggio verso altri mondi, sapendo di andare incontro a enormi rischi e ad un futuro colmo di incertezze: un futuro nero come quello spray; ho voluto così conoscere (e fotografare) gli altri due murales di TVBOY, artista di origini siciliane, uno raffigura il cantante pop Mahmood, opera intitolata “San Mahmood”, l’altra opera si intitola “Omaggio al maestro Andrea Camilleri”;
Ho fotografato la spettacolare eruzione del vulcano Etna avvenuta la sera del 18-01-2021, utilizzando un teleobiettivo;
sono queste solo alcune storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

Even in Sicily bad weather has arrived, now as I write, there is a furious storm in progress, yesterday "it was raining ashes" coming from a giant cloud spit from the Etna volcano .... (always umbrellas ... it is ....!) ... but until yesterday .... (except for a few rainy days) the good weather and, thanks to the warm sirocco and libeccio winds, coming from Africa ... have enticed the swimmers (among them the many tourists present in Taormina and surroundings ... ) to go to the beaches; certainly the situation has changed compared to the hottest months of July and August, in which months the beaches were always very crowded, in the last days of the end of October, however, the beaches presented themselves with the most distant bathers .... with presences constant, but not excessive.
..... with this series that I am about to post, with the arrival of the bad season, at least for this year, I abandon the photographs taken on the beaches.
….. Anche in Sicilia è arrivato il cattivo tempo, ora mentre scrivo, c’è un furioso temporale in corso, ieri “pioveva cenere” proveniente da una gigantesca nuvola sputata dal vulcano Etna….(sempre di ombrelli…si tratta….!) …ma fino ad avant’ieri….(tranne qualche giornata piovosa) il bel tempo e, complici i venti caldi di scirocco e di libeccio, provenienti dall’Africa… hanno invogliato i bagnanti (tra questi i molti turisti presenti a Taormina e dintorni…) a frequentare le spiagge; certamente è cambiata la situazione rispetto ai mesi più caldi di luglio e di agosto, nei quali mesi le spiagge erano sempre molto affollate, in questi ultimi giorni di fine ottobre invece le spiagge si sono presentate con i bagnanti più distanti tra loro….con presenze costanti, ma non eccessive.
….. con questa serie che mi appresto a postare, con l’arrivo oramai della brutta stagione, almeno per quest’anno, abbandono le fotografie colte sulle spiagge.
….. Ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando lungo le spiagge di Taormina (e dintorni…)... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

The volcano Etna, in recent days has shown an intense eruptive activity, even with intense phenomena called "lava fountains", continuous jet emissions persisted intensely for many minutes, of very high "fountains" of incandescent magma, very spectacular and uncommon, in particular, which took place on 23-02 at night, it reached exceptional dimensions and heights; I photographed that spectacular eruptions using a telephoto lens, from Taormina; I photographed Jakub Rizman, an excellent harp player, who spread sweet notes throughout the main square of Taormina, creating a fairytale atmosphere (on YouTube I found some musical performances of him);

The Sandamuni pagoda in Mandalay is known for its large golden chedi, its hundreds of shrines containing inscribed marble slabs and the largest iron Buddha image in Burma. The Sandamuni is located on the foot of Mandalay Hill with good views of the hill and its monasteries. The pagoda was built as a memorial to crown Prince Kanaung, who was murdered in 1866 by two of King Mindon Min’s sons, who were unhappy not to be the first in line to become the next King. The bodies of the crown Prince and three of his sons who were also killed were entombed on the Sandamuni pagoda grounds. In the early 1990’s the tombs were moved to a mausoleum in Mandalay. The oldest structure on the grounds is the golden chedi. The chedi was built in 1874 by King Mindon Min on the site of his temporary Palace while the nearby Royal Palace was being built. Covered walkways through hundreds of shrines lead towards the chedi in the center of the complex. 1774 Shrines housing inscribed marble slabs.
In total 1774 shrines surrounding the central Sandamuni pagoda in Mandalay, each housing a single marble slab. The slabs are inscribed with the teachings of the Buddha. Each slab measuring 1.68 meters tall and 1.07 meters wide is enshrined in a small white shrine named Dhamma ceti, Dhamma being the teachings of the Buddha and ceti the Burmese word for chedi or stupa. The white shrines are topped with an ornamental spire shaped like an umbrella
Myanmar opent zich langzaam voor de wereld na een turbulente geschiedenis te hebben gehad. Het is lange tijd gesloten geweest voor de buitenwereld en nog steeds heeft het militaire regime deels de macht. Het vroegere Birma heet nu officieel Myanmar en een reis door dit land is een bijzondere en unieke ervaring. Bewonder de talrijke tempels en pagodes in dit boeddhistische land met zijn gevarieerde landschap. Geniet van de talrijke cultuurschatten en de vriendelijke bevolking van dit schitterende nog onontdekte land. De Nanmyaeboshar Sandamuni Pagoda in Mandalay wordt omringd door vele witte miniaturen. Op de foto´s zie je een deel van de 1774 die bij elkaar staan! In elke pagode staat een wijsheid die de monniken moeten leren! Het is werkelijk een unieke pagode die je nergens anders ter wereld vindt.
Staring at ruins may not be interesting for everyone. But engage the ruins with your imagination and you may just see how they looked when the original structure was constructed so many years ago -- how the people living in the era laughed and loved, hated and dreamt, learnt and enjoyed. To me, looking at the monuments of Delhi was my school history textbook coming alive.
The Qutub Minar is the tallest minaret in India. Originally an ancient Islamic Monument, inscribed with Arabic inscriptions, the nearby iron pillar has some Brahmi inscriptions, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Qutub Minar -- made of red sandstone and marble -- has 379 stairs, is 72.5 metres (237.8 ft) high, and has a base diameter of 14.3 metres, which narrows to 2.7 metres at the top storey. Construction was started in 1192 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak and was completed by Iltutmish. It is surrounded by several other ancient and medieval structures and ruins, collectively known as the Qutub complex.

With this photographic story made last year 2022, in the town of Limina, in the province of Messina (I made the previous story in the town of Calatabiano in the province of Catania), of the two typical traditional Sicilian religious feasts that have in common the devotion towards San Filippo, I end with this Saint (with the next two stories, I will take a break, with two topics of a different nature, different from the Sicilian religious feasts); Saint Philip is depicted in "black" color because a legend sees Him as the protagonist of a fight in the Underworld against Lucifer, from whose fight He comes out covered in soot. Saint Philip is a much celebrated saint here in Sicily, but not only that, He is also celebrated in the Salerno area, in Calabria (following the path he took during his life) up to the cult of Him present on the island of Malta. The proximity to Taormina (the country where I live and work), the towns of Calatabiano and Limina, made my task easier, in both towns the traditional feasts, take place over two days; in Limina during the first day the Saint is carried on the shoulders from a church located on the outskirts of the center of the town of Limina to "Murazzo locality", it is about 8 kilometers of uninterrupted running (except for a brief stop for recollection in the locality of "Durbi"), therefore eight days away (the so-called "octave") the Saint comes out carried on his shoulder with an "unbridled-fiendish" run from another church in Limina, arriving after a very steep and very tiring climb up to the top of " Calvario mountain", to then go back down and wander among the districts of the town, (and beyond, up to the district of Durbi, to then return): it is not a question of a simple wandering, in well-established moments, the Saint is "made to dance" with an unbridled coming and going on straight paths alternating with a whirling rotary movement on itself: this is a substantial difference with the float of Calatabiano, the latter is very heavy (about 12 quintals), it follows an impervious path, very steep and steep, with stone "steps" partially missing (the ancient path to reach the Norman castle), the "parody" with the exorcisms performed by the Black Saint, consists in the relative speed impressed on the Saint during the path, instead in Limina, the vara being lighter, allows to devotees rapid, rectilinear and swirling gaits, they too recall the convulsive movements made by the demoniacs subjected to the exorcisms of the Saint (a certain risk of rollover is inherent in both vare). In the town of Calatabiano San Filippo acquires the appellative of "Siriaco", i.e. coming from Syria, while in the town of Limina he acquires the appellation "d'Agira", from the name of the town, in the province of Enna, where He will die: is always the same saint (the physiognomy of the face changes slightly), in both statues the right hand is raised to send a blessing, or to perform an exorcism, the left hand holds a book (it is the "apotropaic" document that gave Him St. Peter to enable Him to defeat the forces of Evil). As in the previous story on San Filippo of Calatabiano, also in this one by Limina, in inserting the photographs I did not use a "chronological criterion" of the two days. Now a few brief notes on the life of this saint, also to try to understand how the cult of him was born in Sicily, but also in other countries. There are two sources that speak of San Filippo, called "the Chronicles of Eusebio d'Agira" and "the Chronicles of Athanasius", these chronicles are largely discordant with each other, except for the descriptions on His characteristics as a priest and miracle worker, on His ability to perform exorcisms by driving out demons from the possessed. He was probably born in Thrace (south-eastern region of the Balkan peninsula in 40 AD (?), at the time it was a Roman province, in the time of Arcadius, Eastern Roman emperor, born of a Syrian father and a Roman mother, in during his childhood he was educated to the principles of Christianity which was spreading also in those lands.He comes from Thrace to Rome, is ordained a priest by Peter, and it is by him that he is sent to Sicily (pagan land under Roman rule), with the task to evangelize those places and perform exorcisms; he disembarked at Capo Faro in Messina starting his mandate immediately, then he traveled along the eastern part of Sicily heading south towards Etna (here Limina and Calatabiano, affected by his passage, thanks to His ability as a healer and exorcist, they become devoted to him); thus he reaches the town of Agira (Enna), where He dies there after forty years of Apostolate on the island.
Con questo racconto fotografico, realizzato in due giornate nel maggio dello scorso anno 2022 nel paese di Limina, in provincia di Messina (il precedente racconto l’ho realizzato nel paese di Calatabiano in provincia di Catania), delle due tipiche feste religiose tradizionali siciliane che hanno in comune la devozione verso San Filippo, termino con questo Santo; Egli viene raffigurato di colore “nero” poiché una leggenda lo vede protagonista di una lotta negli Inferi contro Lucifero, dalla cui lotta ne viene fuori ricoperto di fuliggine. San Filippo è un santo molto festeggiato qui in Sicilia, ma lo è anche nel Salernitano, in Calabria (seguendo il suo percorso fatto in vita) fino ad arrivare al suo culto presente nell’isola di Malta. La vicinanza con Taormina (paese nel quale abito e lavoro), dei paesi di Calatabiano e Limina, mi ha facilitato il compito; in entrambi i paesi le feste si svolgono in due giornate; a Limina durante la prima giornata il Santo viene portato in spalla da una chiesa posta in lieve periferia dal centro del paese di Limina fino “al borgo Murazzo”, sono circa 8 chilometri di corsa ininterrotta (tranne una breve sosta di raccoglimento in località “Durbi”), quindi ad otto giorni di distanza (la cosiddetta “ottava”) il Santo esce portato in spalla con una corsa “sfrenata-indiavolata” da un’altra chiesa di Limina, giungendo dopo una ripidissima e faticosissima salita fino all’apice del “Monte Calvario”, per poi ridiscenderne e girovagare tra i quartieri del paese, (ed oltre, fino alla contrada di Durbi, per poi ritornare): non si tratta di un semplice girovagare, in momenti ben stabiliti, il Santo viene “fatto ballare” con uno sfrenato andirivieni su percorsi rettilinei alternato ad un movimento rotatorio vorticoso su se stesso: questa è una differenza sostanziale con la vara di Calatabiano, quest’ultima è pesantissima (circa 12 quintali), percorre un percorso impervio, molto ripido e scosceso, con “gradoni” in pietra molto alti in parte mancanti (l’antico percorso per giungere al castello Normanno), la “parodia” con gli esorcismi compiuti dal Santo Nero, consiste nella relativa velocità impressa al Santo durante il percorso, invece a Limina, la vara essendo più leggera, consente ai devoti andature rapide, rettilinee e vorticose, anch’essi rievocano i movimenti convulsi compiuti dagli indemoniati sottoposti agli esorcismi del Santo (un certo rischio di capovolgimento è insito in entrambe le vare). Nel paese di Calatabiano San Filippo acquista l’appellativo di “Siriaco”, cioè proveniente dalla Siria, mentre nel paese di Limina Egli acquista l’appellativo “d’Agira”, dal nome del paese, in provincia di Enna, dove egli morirà: è sempre lo stesso santo (cambia un pochino la fisionomia del volto), in entrambe le statue la mano destra è alzata ad inviare una benedizione, oppure ad effettuare un esorcismo, la mano sinistra stringe un libro (è il documento “apotropaico” che gli diede San Pietro, per consentirgli di vincere le forze del Male). Come nel precedente racconto su San Filippo di Calatabiano, anche in questo di Limina, nell’inserire le fotografie non ho utilizzato un “criterio cronologico” delle due giornate. Ora qualche breve cenno sulla vita di questo santo, anche per cercare di capire come nasce il suo culto in Sicilia, ma anche in altri paesi. Le fonti che parlano di San Filippo sono due, chiamate “le Cronache di Eusebio d’Agira” e “le Cronache di Atanasio”, queste cronache tra loro sono in buona parte discordanti, tranne le descrizioni sulle sue caratteristiche di sacerdote e di taumaturgo, sulle sue capacità di compiere esorcismi scacciando i demoni dagli impossessati. Egli nacque probabilmente in Tracia (regione sud-orientale della penisola balcanica nel 40 d.C. (?), all’epoca era una provincia romana, ai tempi d’Arcadio, imperatore romano d’Oriente, nato da padre siriano e da madre romana, nella sua infanzia fu educato ai principi del Cristianesimo che andava propagandosi anche in quelle terre. Egli giunge dalla Tracia a Roma, viene ordinato sacerdote da Pietro, ed è proprio da Lui che viene mandato in Sicilia (terra pagana sotto il dominio Romano), col compito di evangelizzare quei luoghi e compiere esorcismi; sbarca a Capo Faro a Messina iniziando fin da subito il suo mandato, poi percorre la fascia orientale della Sicilia dirigendosi a sud verso l’Etna (ecco che Limina e Calatabiano, interessati dal suo passaggio, grazie alle sue capacità di guaritore ed esorcista, gli divengono devote); giunge così al paese di Agira (Enna), dove lì muore dopo quarant’anni di Apostolato nell’isola.

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of Taormina and its surroundings (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");
... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the sea to swim (even if the sea water is still a little cold now ...); I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge di Taormina e dintorni (Sicilia-Italia); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);
ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in mare per fare qualche nuotata (anche se l’acqua del mare adesso è ancora un po’ fredda…); ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.---------------------------------------------------------

My health company, every three months, for three days, sends me to cover a shortage of staff, in the Lipari hospital, (and so do my colleagues), in the little free time I have available, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion.
Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands (they are located north of Sicily, one hour by hydrofoil from Milazzo); Lipari, under the fascist dictatorship, was the seat of forced confinement for political opponents, it was considered "a Sicilian Alcatraz", among all the islands of confinement, Lipari was most likely the most liveable, both for its considerable size that favored the relations of the confined with the inhabitants, both because, to a greater extent than elsewhere, in Lipari, confined persons were allowed to live in private residences, together with their families or other companions. I found written: "Being on an island that belongs to another island means feeling doubly foreign, tied to the will of the gods and nature, where every certainty can be swept away by the waves of that sea that laps it in every intimate part, but it is a sensation that lasts for a few minutes, the Liparoti (the inhabitants of Lipari, ed) know it well (as all Sicilians know), the Greek concept of Xenia, hospitality, is inherent in them, a written rule, is a duty that provides sanctity and protection for the guest ".
Lipari has a long history as a place of detention. It is the island where the common criminals were initially confined, then with the law of November 6, 1926 (the twenty-year fascist period begins with the seizure of power by fascism and Mussolini, officially occurred on October 31, 1922), Lipari thus became the a place to isolate and confine opponents; the life of the confined began immediately after disembarkation, with lodging in the dormitories of the Castle, under the strict surveillance of the police and the fascist militia, every morning, the confined were subjected to the appeal and they received a daily pay of 10 lire; they could move freely in the town, without however exceeding the demarcation line that surrounded the inhabited center; walking was the main activity, the saddest and most melancholy ones pushed to the limit allowed, to see the ferries arrive from Milazzo, aware that the sea was guarded by motorboats armed with machine guns. A situation that will not prevent Nitti, Rosselli and Lussu from fleeing the island, on a moonless night, between 27 and 28 July 1929.

La mia azienda sanitaria, ogni tre mesi, per tre giorni, mi manda a ricoprire una carenza di organico, nell’ospedale di Lipari, (e così anche i miei colleghi), nel poco tempo libero che mi resta a disposizione, mi dedico alla mia passione fotografica.
Lipari è l’isola più grande delle isole Eolie (si trovano a nord della Sicilia, ad un’ora di aliscafo da Milazzo); Lipari , sotto la dittatura fascista, fu sede di confino coatto per gli oppositori politici, essa era considerata “un’Alcatraz siciliana”, fra tutte le isole di confino, Lipari fu molto probabilmente quella più vivibile, sia per le sue notevoli dimensioni che favorivano i rapporti dei confinati con gli abitanti, sia perché, in misura maggiore che altrove, a Lipari veniva consentito ai confinati di abitare in residenze private, insieme ai propri familiari o ad altri compagni. Ho trovato scritto: “Trovarsi su un Isola che appartiene a un’altra Isola, vuol dire sentirsi doppiamente straniero, legato al volere degli dei e della natura, dove ogni certezza può essere spazzata via dalle onde di quel mare che la lambisce in ogni intima parte, ma è una sensazione che dura solo per qualche minuto, i Liparoti (gli abitanti di lipari, n.d.r.)lo sanno bene (come lo sanno tutti i siciliani), è connaturato in loro il concetto greco della Xenia, l'ospitalità, non è una norma scritta, è un atto dovuto che prevede sacralità e protezione per l’ospite”.
Lipari ha una lunga storia come luogo di detenzione. È l’isola dove all’inizio erano confinati i delinquenti comuni, poi con la legge del 6 novembre 1926 (il ventennio fascista inizia con la presa del potere del fascismo e di Mussolini, ufficialmente avvenuta il 31 ottobre 1922), Lipari divenne così il luogo dove isolare e confinare gli oppositori; la vita del confinato iniziava subito dopo lo sbarco, con l’alloggio nelle camerate del Castello, sotto la rigida sorveglianza della polizia e della milizia fascista, ogni mattina, i confinati erano sottoposti all’appello e alla consegna della "mazzetta", ossia la paga giornaliera di 10 lire; potevano circolare liberamente nel paese, senza però superare la linea di demarcazione che circondava il centro abitato; passeggiare era la principale attività, i più tristi e malinconici si spingevano fino al limite consentito per vedere arrivare i traghetti da Milazzo, consapevoli che il mare era sorvegliato da motoscafi armati di mitragliatrici. Situazione che non impedirà a Nitti, Rosselli e Lussu di fuggire dall’isola, in una notte senza luna, tra il 27 e il 28 luglio del 1929.
Ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per le strade di Lipari... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina (Sicily);
I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I met a lady no longer young, who told me that, when she was seven years old, she met the bandit Giuliano (!) on Mount Ziretto (a mountain that is located above Taormina, in the territory of Castelmola), in telling she looked up and pointed at him, it seemed she was seeing him at that precise moment ....! (ah! if only I had had a special camera to capture the images that at that moment were resurfacing in the mind of that very nice lady ....!), she described it and ... she saw it (!): if she remembers it tall, handsome man, boots that reached mid-leg, rifle over his shoulder ....! and then the lady added: of course, I didn't know who that man was, they told me this afterwards ....! I photographed what I believe was a small advertising shoot, thanks to the availability of the photographer and the models (thank you for giving me some of their precious time ..!).

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina (Sicilia);
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ... ho incontrato una signora non più giovane, che mi ha raccontato che, quando aveva l'età di sette anni, incontrò il bandito Giuliano (!) sul monte Ziretto (un monte che si trova sopra Taormina, nel territorio di Castelmola), nel raccontare lei guardava in alto e lo indicava, sembrava lo stesse vedendo in quel preciso momento....! (ah! se solo io avessi avuto una macchina fotografare speciale per catturare le immagini che in quel momento andavano riaffiorando nella mente di quella simpaticissima signora....!), lo descriveva e...lo vedeva (!): se lo ricorda alto, un bell'uomo, gli stivali che arrivavano a metà gamba, il fucile in spalla....! e poi la signora aggiunse: certo, io non sapevo chi fosse quell'uomo, questo me lo hanno detto dopo....! Ho fotografato quello che credo fosse un piccolo shooting pubblicitario, grazie alla disponibilità della fotografa e delle modelle (le ringrazio per avermi concesso un pò del loro prezioso tempo..!).

All the photos I present were taken on the two suggestive beaches overlooking Taormina, the Isola Bella beach and the Mazzarò bay beach respectively; these two beaches, both known for their enchanting beauty, have been the scene of stories that few know, time has only partially healed ancient tears; Mazzarò was chosen by a family of unfortunate Jews made up of four people, who, persecuted by the Nazi-Fascist ferocity, decided to commit suicide by tying all four together with a rope, then weighed down with stones, they let themselves slip from a boat into the deep waters near the Mazzarò rock, called “Scogghia Longa”; the "Isola Bella" (its original name was "rock of Santo Stefano") was named by an English noblewoman, Lady Florence Trevelyan, a relative of Queen Victoria, who did so much for Taormina (a woman of truly extraordinary qualities), tells of a young English officer who died on a ship on which he was embarked, a Brigantine who patrolled the Strait of Messina to discourage Napoleonic soldiers from disembarking from Calabria in Sicily, the captain out of respect for the Royal Family (to which, let's remember, Lady Florence belonged), instead of entrusting her body to the sea as was the custom at the time, she had it buried on top of the island. Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle due suggestive spiagge prospicienti Taormina, rispettivamente la spiaggia dell’Isola Bella, e la spiaggia della baia di Mazzarò; queste due spiagge, entrambe conosciute per la loro incantevole bellezza, sono state teatro di storie che pochi conoscono, il tempo ha solo in parte guarito antiche lacrime; Mazzarò fu scelta da una famiglia di sventurati ebrei composta da quattro persone, i quali, perseguitati dalla ferocia nazi-fascista, decisero di suicidarsi legandosi tutti e quattro tra loro con una corda, poi appesantiti con pietre, si lasciarono scivolare da una barca nelle profonde acque nei pressi dello scoglio di Mazzarò, chiamato “scogghia Longa”; l’Isola Bella (il suo nome originario era “scoglio di Santo Stefano”) fu così chiamata da un nobildonna inglese, lady Florence Trevelyan, parente della regina Vittoria, che tanto si prodigò per Taormina (una donna dalle qualità veramente straordinarie), si narra di un giovane ufficiale inglese che morì su di una nave sulla quale era imbarcato, un Brigantino che pattugliava lo stretto di Messina per scoraggiare i soldati Napoleonici dallo sbarcare dalla Calabria in Sicilia, il capitano per rispetto della Famiglia Reale (alla quale, ricordiamoci, apparteneva lady Florence), invece di affidarne il corpo al mare come si usava all’epoca, lo fece seppellire in cima all’Isola. "the help" .... ... yesterday Baby Jesus was born, for those who are Christians this represents an immense act of God's love for his children ... and it is to that God-Man that we often resort to asking for help .... who among us ... has never needed help ...?! .....
I photographed people I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability: I met Antonio and his girlfriend, who came to Taormina to spend the last day together, the next day Antonio will leave to go very far, unfortunately leaving his beloved, to see her again who knows when ... I met the Japanese companion of my dear friend Cesare, who flew to the sky many years ago, I knew about his companion, but I had never met her before ... I photographed a sweet Chinese girl that I met on three different occasions, each time with a little more confidence….

"the help"...."l'aiuto" ...ieri è nato Gesù Bambino, per chi è cristiano questo rappresenta un atto d’amore immenso di Dio per i suoi figli...ed è a quel Dio-Uomo che spesso ricorriamo chiedendo aiuto.... chi tra noi...non ha mai avuto bisogno di aiuto...?!.....
ho fotografato persone che non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità: ho incontrato Antonio e la sua ragazza, venuti a Taormina per trascorrere l'ultimo giorno insieme, il giorno successivo Antonio partirà per andare molto lontano, lasciando purtroppo la sua amata, per rivederla poi chissà quando….Ho conosciuto la compagna Giapponese del mio carissimo amico Cesare, volato in cielo tanti anni fa, sapevo di questa sua compagna, ma non l’avevo mai conosciuta prima…Ho fotografato una dolce ragazza Cinese che ho incontrato in tre occasioni diverse, ogni volta con un pizzico di confidenza in più….
