Macro Mondays theme : #Tea

This little tea infuser is shaped like a teapot. And just beside it, some Oolong tea leaves. Oolong is a traditional Chinese tea. It’s made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. This tea is known for many of its health benefits.

As a reference, the little teapot plate measures 1 ¼” in diameter.

Tea anyone?

I love a hot cup of tea. I hate a mouthful of tea leaves! So I stick to tea bags and this heart shaped tea infuser remains unused in the kitchen drawer.

(I put a red LED inside it to try and catch the ''3" shape of the other clam half. But who ever makes tea in the dark?)

Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth.

We very rarely drink tea at home - and when we do it's likely to be from a tea bag - but we do have one of the cute strainer balls, just in case.

Given the beautiful weather recently and being the last month of winter, the explosion of buds and blossoms from the Prunus trees is showing how the old becomes infused with the new. Bark and blossom are a great pair.

Aboutme

In the morning a little light and a tea infuser will do the trick for me. I had a photo of boiling water all prepared when this idea struck my old brain... so here it is. Enjoy your morning tea of coffee! (f.y.i the light inside is made up of 2 different colors, with a felt-marker)

MALACHI: “Goodness Daddy! What are you doing?”

DADDY: “Oh Malachi, I spilt some of my Monk Pear tea out of the tea infuser and now it has scattered everywhere!”

MALACHI: “Well, perhaps I can help you clean it up, Daddy.”

DADDY: “Oh would you Malachi? That would be very helpful. Your little paws can probably reach the tea leaves I can’t get with my bigger fingers.”

MALACHI: “Just one moment, Daddy.” *Leaves and returns with a teapot, milk jug sugar bowl, cup and saucer.

DADDY: “Ummm… Malachi?”

MALACHI: “Yes Daddy?”

DADDY: “Malachi, pardon me for asking this, but how exactly is your tea set going to help me clean the tea leaves up?”

MALACHI: “Well, it’s really quite simple, Daddy.” *Puts paw into tea infuser and withdraws a single tealeaf.* “See Daddy, I have some hot water in the pot and I will add this tealeaf to it to brew my own pot of Monk Pear tea.”

DADDY: “And that helps me in what way, Malachi?”

MALACHI: “Well I should have thought that was obvious, Daddy.” *Puts tealeaf into his teapot.* “By me taking this tealeaf, that is one less tealeaf you will have to clean up.”

DADDY: “Oh!” *Surprised.*

MALACHI: “Now, if you’ll excuse me Daddy, I’ll go drink my delicious Monk Pear tea, and leave you to sweep up the rest of the tealeaves. Goodbye Daddy!” *Takes away tea things and wanders away.*

DADDY: *Crumples face in consternation.* “Goodbye Malachi… and thank you… I think.”

MALACHI: *Distantly.* “My pleasure to help, Daddy.”

The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 7th of January is “tea”. This was a wonderful theme for me, as I love drinking tea and have many kinds, including this Monk Pear tea that a friend of mine put me on to. It tastes a bit like Earl Grey tea, only with a definite pear flavour. If you follow my photostream, you may know that I collect 1:12 size miniatures, some of which have featured in past themes in the “Looking Close on Friday” group. This includes Malachi the bear, who was so kind as to “help” me clean up the spilt tealeaves! I do hope that you like my choice, and that this photograph makes you smile!

Malachi I acquired in mid-March 2020 (and mid Coronavirus) from a wonderful Melbourne stalwart toy shop: Dafel Dolls and Bears, when I went looking for a present for one of my goddaughters. Malachi is designed by Mary and hand-made by Wendy Joy in Australia. He has articulated arms and legs, and an extremely sweet face. Malachi was the name he came with, written by hand on his little tag.

Malachi tea set is a 1:12 miniature gilded tea set, which has a transfer of Art Nouveau gold leaves on it based on a Royal Doulton design for grapevines from the Edwardian era. The tea set is an artisan made 1:12 miniature from my own collection.

Infused with wonderous blue hues by the glacial rock flour suspended in its torrents, a cold winter river cascades into a fissure in the basalt landscape forming the beautiful Brúarfoss, near Laugarvatn, Iceland.

On our awesome photographic journey through Iceland late last winter, Sky Matthews and I made a point of trying to find this amazing place. Its quite convenient but not obvious, if that makes sense, and the mood of the day ended up complementing the experience well. The skies were gray and volatile, befitting the season; the trail was ice and snow covered; and a few flurries frittered slowly down in the breeze for a time as we gazed upon the intricate waterfalls. Perhaps most intriguingly, the ruddy blue waters appeared in such vivid contrast to the surrounding subdued earth tones and grayscale atmosphere. A stunning winter scene!

A note: We were fortunate to be able experience this beautiful place when it was open to visitors, but I understand that the trail to Brúarfoss was closed later that summer due to impacts of the increasing volume of tourists visiting the site, at least some of whom apparently were not respectful of this magnificent environment. Yet another reminder of the need to take great care as we interact with these natural wonders and the many other landscapes we pass through along the way.

Thanks for viewing!

Lisa Solomon...Senninbari [1000 stitch knot belt. -from her website-

Senninbari – these are 1000 stitch belts that women would make for their husbands going off to war in WWII. Ideally 1000 women would gather and each one would put a French knot in a belt. They would work on many belts – collectively infusing each one with the luck the hoped would keep their loved ones safe. The belts protect the stomach/gut which is of significance to the Japanese. The belly or hara is where a person’s power and vitality resides – this is in part why it was an honor for samurai to commit Hara-kiri instead of dying in shame – it was an act of controlling one’s own vitality. The senninbari were meant to be talismans to protect the wearer.

So let's stay on the subjects of speleothems (cave formations) for at least one more post. These two lovely speleothems that look like parachutes suddenly released and about to open up are called cave shields. According to the National Park Service, "it's estimated that Lehman Caves contains over 500 of them."

The theory of their formation is something like this: imagine you have your thumb over the top of a hose, so that the water coming out is spraying out from all around your thumb. Your thumb is creating a point between high pressure (the water stuck in the hose) and low pressure (the water exiting from that cramped hose out into the open air. If that water is infused with calcium carbonate, then the water under pressure from the hose now precipitates out ("fizzes" out) that calcium carbonate around your thumb. High pressure to lower pressure.

Something like that, they believe, happens when calcium carbonate-infused water, under pressure, flows/sprays out from a capillary-sized (aka really really tiny) joint or crack and begins to form an extension of calcium carbonate all around that joint or crack as it precipitates from that water now that it's exiting a high-pressure area and into a low-pressure area. This process continues and "builds plates of concentrically layered calcite separated by a capillary-sized (aka really really thin) crack called the "medial crack. Shields grow bigger as more calcite is deposited on the outer rims of the plates." Some of that calcium carbonate-laden water also precipitates out as it is flowing down from the concentric plate and creates that drippy look known as "flowstone."

That's the hypothesis, anyway, and it makes scientific sense. It's still a best guess, though because this entire process of creating cave speleothems occurs in the darkest of dark over thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions of years.

This shot, like the last, was handheld. Tripods are one of the items not allowed on the cave tours there, so I had to make sure the ISO was high (2500) and the aperture was open to an extent (f4.0) so that the shutter speed (1/40) was still such that I could get several "rapid" clicks using the burst method to get at least one keeper shot. It worked well, for the most part, thanks to that bit of lighting here and there in the cave.

Macro Monday's and the theme of "Tea".

I mistakenly bought a box of loose leaf tea several months ago and this has remained in our kitchen cupboard since then.

Now with this weeks MM theme being Tea I decided it was time to go and buy an infuser so I could finally make some good use of the loose tea.

The infuser is like two spoons with holes and both sides clip together so after getting a scoop of tea leaves and boiling the kettle I poured the water into my cup over the infuser and then stirred a little and waited a few minutes. I had then decided to unclip both sides so the used leaves fell out and photograph it that way rather than trying to record the infusion coming out into the water as I had already done this once before.

Well, a couple of photos later and after one very nice cuppa I was done.

My 365-2022: #355 of 365

I got to sneak in a lunch date with this inquisitive guy, peeking at me from under his stroller cover, and his mama. In my return to a more traditional 9-5 I've lost some of the flexibility and freedom that freelancing provided. I've gained other things I know (read: insurance we can afford that actually pays for my seemingly endless doctor's appointments and my husband's mental health needs). I know this. I'm grateful.

But I miss scheduling my comings and goings independent of a larger organization. On early fall afternoons walking to our town center for midday tacos has all the appeal. Combining that with getting time with a friend midweek infused a hectic few days with some levity. Good conversation, yummy food, baby snuggles... the good stuff. I love that this project reminds me, again and again of it.

Where's the good stuff in your life this week?

Happy Macro Monday and have a good week!

These are raw and unpasteurised honey infused with ginseng and a bit of beehive. Ginseng is a potent root used in traditional Chinese medicine. This is high in antioxidants and antiflammatory properties. Some health benefits of honey may include improved liver function or heart health, but consuming large amounts may be harmful to your health. Like any sugary drinks, honey is still form of sugar and, hence, must be consumed in moderation.

Fact about honey: Raw honey is a natural product therefore the colour and texture varies depending on the season and level of crystallisation.
