MTR (Mass Transit Railway), Kwun Tong Station, Hong Kong
Chicago, IL: Amtrak train No. 392 "Illini" is backing south across the South Branch of the Chicago River over the 100 year old Canal Street Railroad Bridge (vertical lift type) and will soon be heading to Carbondale, IL with three Iowa Pacific Holdings cars, Diner 448, full length dome "Scenic View" and "Pontchartrain Club" respectively on the rear. These cars were chartered by the Illinois Central Railroad Heritage Association for a day's outing from Chicago Union Station to Carbondale and return.
Note: This is the first photo I took on this outing, so perhaps a little explanation of what is going on is needed at this time. First I was lucky enough to secure a seat in the round end observation section of "Pontchartrain Club." My plan was to photograph our departure from Chicago as best I could through the center rear door glass and I was especially eager to photograph our route over the St. Charles Air Line ramp and steel bridge over the Chicago River. Normally this train backs south out of Union Station and then continues backing west to Metra's Halsted Street Station on BNSF Railway tracks. Here the train stops and reverses direction and then heads engine first on the St. Charles Air Line. But that route was blocked on this day by BNSF Railway work in the vicinity of S. Union Avenue. So instead the train headed engine first out of Union Station, then turned west onto the BNSF only enough to clear a switch that would allow the train to back east and then south over the Chicago River (as in the photo above). After crossing the river the train continued backing southwest on Canadian National Railway tracks and then stopped just short of the Interstate 90 bridge at S. Archer Avenue. Here we reversed direction and headed engine first east, northeast and east again to join the St. Charles Air Line at Metra's 16th Street interlocking tower at S. Clark Street. During all the backing moves I had to stay away from the center door while an Amtrak conductor guided the train. So you will notice in the above photo the camera is not aligned on the center of the track we were on but is a bit to the left (east) of it. Considering the extreme curvature of the glass I was shooting through at a sharp angle, the photo is remarkably clear. Unfortunately the day started very cloudy in Chicago, but this also allowed for not having to deal with losing details in long deep shadows cast by the rising sun. Win some, loose some.

Gort station is on the 1869 Waterford, Limerick and Western Railway line between Limerick and Athenry. The line was closed to passengers in 1976 and to freight in 1978. However the section from Athenry to Ennis did reopen to passengers in 2010 so today Gort has been rebuilt and has a regular train service again unlike the northern route which is "mothballed".
The original station buildings (and water tank) still survive but have been superseded by the new infrastructure.
