I had the idea of using an infinity mirror for light painting some years ago, just after I found a perfectly fine mirror tray someone discarded. It was only recently that I decided to follow through so I attached Plexiglas with one way mirror film on top of the tray and an RGB LED strip on the inside with controller+battery on the back. This is my first test with it. I just love to transform junk into LP tools.

Part of the Infinity Bridge, a foot and cycle bridge over the River Tees. Its name, suggested by the public, comes from the similarity of the shape of the bridge and its reflection to the infinity symbol. (The combination looks more like a bowling pin to me.)
The arched section is nearly 200 yards (180 metres) long, the decking extending some way either side. The bridge connects a university campus to a development area. Its deck is concrete and its arches made of box-section steel. Blue and white lights illuminate the deck at night (photo here).
Work on the bridge began in 2007 and was completed in 2009. Responsibility for its design is disputed, Spence Associates and Expedition Engineering both claiming primacy. Wikipedia has more about the structure.

I took this photo in July 2010 and it's been here on my stream since January of this year when I first started my Flickr journey. I revived it today to mark 11/11/11.
It makes me think of infinity, as do all those ones in today's date.
A dear friend I've known since we were just 13 recently gave me a gift for no reason at all. He knows how much I like to take photographs, so he decided to send me two photo canvases to use for any of my photographs to hang in my home. (He encouraged me to use 'art' photos rather than family photos, just to push my creative boundaries.) This is one of the images I chose. I thought of the infinite nature of solid friendship like the one we've built since we met in 8th grade. I finally finalized the order two days ago and it's on it's way. Seems like a fine day to show my gratitude here.

What this graph shows
To get greater depth of field you need to use smaller apertures. But lenses also become less sharp at small apertures due to diffraction. There is therefore an optimal aperture to use to get the foreground as sharp as possible, which is what this graph shows.
Infinity focus
It is usually best to focus on the object that you want to be the main subject of your shot. When that's a mountain, hill etc it is often a long way off. An approximation to this is "infinity", marked on most lenses with the infinity symbol which looks like a sideways 8. If you have an autofocus lens it is probably best to focus directly on the far point than to set it manually, but in low light autofocus becomes unreliable so it is probably better to use infinity focus.
Choosing an aperture
When the whole of the scene is a long way off choosing an aperture is easy. Most lenses are sharpest at about f/8, so that's the aperture to use. When you want something closer to be sharp too it gets more tricky.
How to read the graph
Suppose you are using a 20mm lens focused at infinity. Something in the foreground is 12ft away. The point at which 12ft and 20mm intersect is closest to the f/13 line, so f/13 is the aperture to use.
Suppose you are using a 50mm lens focused at infinity. Something in the foreground is 6ft away. No line on the graph is close to this. At this point you need to re-think your shot and move further from the foreground, otherwise it will be intolerably soft. 26ft to the foreground will allow you to use an aperture of f/22.
Suppose you are using a 10mm lens focused at infinity. Something in the foreground is 12ft away. You're above the f/8 line so f/8 will work just fine.
Calculations
The lines are drawn though points where the Circle of Confusion is the same size as the Airy Disc. The relationship holds whatever sensor size your camera has - no conversion factor is necessary (you should use actual focal lengths to read this graph, not 35mm equivalents).
Useful conclusions
The longer the focal length you use the smaller the aperture you will need to use to get the foreground sharp, or the further you need to move back. If you want to get really close to the foreground, and get sharp shots, a wide angle lens is a must.
Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore
Singapore’s metropolitan skyline is perhaps best viewed from the infinity pool at the top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Completed in 2010, the vast complex is rivalling the traditional Raffles Hotel as the city's iconic residence for visitors. The pool is 191m above the ground with a 146m “vanishing edge” and is supported by four movement joints which absorb the natural motion of the complex’s three supporting towers. It is an engineering and architectural masterpiece - with a great view.

This is a picture of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University which is an institution of higher learning in Sanskrit and other languages located in Varanasi (Benaras).
It is a quiet place nearby the house where I am living and I like to come there in order to daydream among this amazing Gothic style architecture which is quite unexepected in this city.
