Schneider-Kreuznach Edixa-Xenar 50mm f2.8 on Nex 5T

A corner of the forest near Ohanapecosh on Mt. Rainier. It was Memorial Day morning, it was drizzly, my boots were wet, I had to load my camera under an umbrella. It doesn't get much better than that.

Jack-Jack used laser vison during the reading time.

The City of Vancouver is gorgeous on a clear night with blue sky. This is Vancouver's Science World which is located in False Creek. The red building on the far left is Rogers Arena.

I was inspired to take this shot through the amazing work of Vancouver photographer Chris Collacott. He has a very similar image that looks stunning.

This is an eight shot panorama merged into one gigantic image. I am sure this could be printed the size of a billboard with super sharp clarity and resolution.

These are the prizes that I received for the Lego Ideas Incredibles contest that I won, and they are, well, INCREDIBLE!! I finally got the Death Star I've been wanting for 10 years, the Incredibles 2 sets, 2 movie posters signed by filmmakers Brad Bird and John Walker, personalized artwork depicting me as a speedster known as Xcelerate inside of a Lego frame, and a giant mosaic of it with spare parts!!

Have a great week end my Flickr Friends ....

"Best Exotic Marigold Hotel "

Yesterday evening, we had one of the most beautiful and impressive sunsets I've ever seen.

After a clear day, the light was turning during one hour from a soft yellow into a deep orange, and finally a dark red, before the stars appeared.

So beautiful clouds-structures to observe in the entire sky.

Many sunsets are beautiful, but this one was really special to my eyes !

There's no digital manipulation, except decreasing (!) the saturation to make the colours as natural as it was.

It's difficult to choose one picture to show you, I hope you'll enjoy this one...

This photo is now #1 on interestingness ! Thanks everybody !

I photographed two of the vessels in Ostend harbour currently deployed to work on the Seastar and Mermaid wind farms located in Belgian waters approximately 40-50 km off the coast of Ostend, in 22 to 38-metre deep water.

The two windfarm projects will have a combined capacity of 487 MW. The wind turbines are 109 metres in height and have a rotor diameter of 167 metres. The plan is to install 58 turbines to power around 500,000 households. Once completed, the project should offset 700,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

The Vole au Vent on the left is an offshore jack up installation vessel built in 2013 in Gdansk, Poland. She sails sailing under the flag of Luxembourg.

The impressive crane of offshore jack-up installation vessel enables safe installation of the heavy foundations and components of offshore wind farms. The ship is equipped with legs to lift itself above the sea level to provide a stable platform that is unaffected by the waves.

The Apollo first arrived in June 2020 at the REBO terminal in Ostend. It is a jack-up vessel designed to incorporate tools for the installation of turbines on windfarms in high winds of up to 15m/sec. Most vessels of this type only allow installation up to winds reaching 10-12m/sec. This capability gives the Apollo a significant advantage on the North Sea. The leg length of the Apollo is extendable to 106.8m.

This odd-looking gem is a columnar snowflake, which are more common than you might imagine at the beginning and end of winter where the temperatures are warmer. View large!

The reason why you might not see these crystals is because of their size and difficulty to photograph. Measuring between 0.5mm and 2mm long, this type of snowflake is much smaller than most, and also more three dimensional. Higher magnifications are required and focus stacking becomes incredibly complex as the depth and edges of all sides are viewable through the transparent structure.

It’s tough to describe exactly what most of these lines and shapes define, but let’s see if I can describe at least one: what sticks out the farthest grows the fastest. In a more traditional snowflake you can see this by branches forming at the corners because they stick out farther and accumulate new water vapour faster, but in this scenario we have a good look at the other facets of the crystal and how they are affected by the same “rule”.

You might notice some echoing rectangular shapes, as well as little “crowning” elements near the top of the crystal along the outer edges. The rectangles form because the center of the facet grows slower than the outer edges, becoming indented and creating a surface where the center of each facet is recessed and all of the “framework” surrounding it protrudes further out. This is the exact same way that bubbles from inside of normal snowflakes.

With a keen eye and knowing what exactly to look for here, you would also be able to tell than the crystal is hollow. There are conical cavities that grow larger towards the top and the bottom for the same reason. All formed in a few short minutes!

This snowflake was photographed WELL beyond the limits of standard macro photography. At 12:1 magnification (12 times closer than your normal macro lens will get), you push up against certain limitations of physics (the diffraction of light, specifically) that limit resolution, and depth of field doesn’t really exist. The shooting technique is much the same as for “regular” snowflakes, lit with a ring flash and focus stacked to get everything needed. Only 20 shots were required for this one to cover the depth from forward to back, but with so many transparent interactions, much of the process needs to be done manually.

I have the components on my way to me that will allow the construction of a 20:1 lens based around a microscope objective so that I may get greater detail in the tiniest snowflakes. You’ll see this new gear put to use as soon as it’s assembled!

Curious about photographing snowflakes yourself and want to know where to start? You absolutely need a copy of Sky Crystals: Unraveling the Mysteries of Snowflakes. The book is contains every single step of the process that I go through to create these images – as well as all the science for how they form! Grab a copy here: www.skycrystals.ca/book/ - note the price in Canadian dollars, it’s quite a deal for those in the US!

Omaha's Tower B looks over Union Pacific's College World Series Home Plate Special as it eases west while Amtrak's California Zephyr pulls into the Omaha depot to make its station stop.

Luck was on my side. The UP train normally wouldn't make this move toward the UP side; they'd use the east connecting track and take their headroom on BNSF main one between the two trains before zigzagging down to BNSF's Gibson Yard to go up towards North Omaha. On this morning BNSF had parked a coal empty on main one to wait on Amtrak, blocking the UP CWS train until it left. To expedite the next move, the special backed past the west crossover normally used by OPPD coal trains heading to the North Omaha plant so they could change ends while they waited.

It was quite incredible to witness a rolling meet (albeit a slow one) between two passenger trains in downtown Omaha. Something like this was probably commonplace when Tower B was in service controlling the west end of Omaha Union Station.

Mr Incredible Face V2... Thoughts?

Personally I think its much better than the previous, yes could still be improved, yes over sized, but translating his (and other incredibles characters) heads into lego form is very difficult. Even TLG seems to have ad problems.

Hair has also been re-cut

Smile might need to be fixed

Proper upload probably tonight.
