African countries have made considerable progress in increasing agricultural productivity and reducing hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. But continued population growth, urbanization, changing diets, and climate change are putting pressure on food systems not only to provide more food but also to make more diverse and nutritious foods available and accessible. New digital technologies and services are already making an impact on how food is being produced, processed, marketed, traded, and consumed across the continent. How African countries position themselves to harness and deploy digital technologies will determine the future competitiveness of African agriculture and its contribution to African economies.
This seminar will explore how African countries can develop a “digitalization ecosystem” to help foster growth and competitiveness in the continent’s value chains. Participants will also discuss the institutional and policy innovations that have already been implemented by African governments as well as efforts by the private sector and ag-tech startups to increase the development and use of digital tools and services in agriculture.

The rugged central mountainous terrain of Taiwan Island has restrained its population and socio-economical growth that make the economic activities developed mostly along the plains of the West Coast areas. For years, the increasing demands for North-South intercity transportation had attracted much attention from the Government to work out the best solution. An efficient high speed and mass transportation system is therefore greatly needed to meet the anticipated demand in the intercity and regional daily commuting and business trips. The idea of linking the north with the south by a high-speed rail service was first thought of as early as in the seventies. After many years of strategic and route analyses, the HSR alignment and station locations were finally determined in 1992 by the Executive Yuan.
The Taiwan North-South High Speed Rail Project was initially planned to build as a public sector project, bearing the full responsibilities of the government Due to the increased public fiscal burdens, the Legislative Yuan withdrew the budget allocated to the HSR Project and later Government decided to have the HSR Project built by a private sector venture with a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The Encouragement Statute stating the required rules and policies for the project was passed in December 1994. A tender invitation for Private Participation in construction and operation of Taiwan North-South High Speed Rail Project was thus made by the Government on October 29, 1996. With a construction value of US$ 18 billion, the HSR Project is undoubtedly the largest privately managed and funded BOT Project in the world at the time and perhaps even today.
Taiwan High Speed Rail Consortium was formed in November 1996 to bid for the HSR BOT Project and was selected the Best Applicant in September 1997. Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) was incorporated in May 1998 as the Concessionaire to build and operate the HSR service. In July 23, 1998, the agreements were signed between MOTC (representing the ROC Government) and the THSRC, which have granted THSRC a concession to finance, construct, and operate the High Speed Rail System for a period of 35 years and a concession for HSR station area development for a period of 50 years. The HSR will link Taipei to Kaohsiung at a total length of 345km with 90 minutes traveling time. During the first stage of the operation, eight stations of the high speed rail will be operated, namely, Taipei, Banciao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan, and Kaohsiung (Zuoying), and by 2010, four more stations will be open, i.e., Nangang, Miaoli, Changhua and Yunlin.
The “9/21” earthquake in 1999 had resulted in releasing the contracts of the civil works due to the concerns of the design and construction methods. In March 2000, the first contract of the civil works was awarded and began its construction in August of the same year. With the great employment opportunities generated from the civil construction works, station and depot developments, trackworks and E&M core system, THSRC do bring the significant benefits directly and indirectly to the local economy and also caused the enhancement in the quality and technology of project management.
The Roll-Out Ceremony for the Taiwan High Speed Rail 700T trainsets took place in January 2004 at Kobe, Japan. It was the first time that the Shinkansen was exported its system to the foreign country. A test run was jointly held by the Taiwan Shinkansen Corporation and THSRC at HSR Tainan Station in January 2005, it was heralding the coming age of the high speed rail service with the vision of enabling people of Taiwan to live in an “one-day peripheral circle”.
By looking back at the history of the transportation developments in Taiwan, we realized that building any form of transportation system, regardless it is a harbor, railway or highway; which always have the immediate and long-term impacts on its regional development, an efficient and safe transportation would definitely change the habit, attitude and lifestyle of the society.
It is without saying that the benefits brought by the Taiwan High Speed Rail are a fast and convenient way of the trans-island travel linking north to south of Taiwan, and it also brings people together leading to an prosperous and fulfilled life.

Increasing female labor participation not only economically and politically empowers women, it also has the potential to substantially increase economic productivity. This is an especially critical issue in Japan where getting more women into the workforce could result in GDP gains of up to 13 percent and help to offset losses caused by the country’s demographic decline. Cooperation and coordination between Japan and the United States could also help to economically empower women elsewhere around the world, especially in developing countries where the potential economic gains are most significant. While increased female labor participation presents a significant opportunity, the structural and social hurdles are enormous – and it is not clear that policy initiatives currently underway in Japan and elsewhere can surmount them. HISTORY:
The Leeds and Liverpool canal was built from 1772 to increase industrial transportation between West Yorkshire and the Merseyside ports. Limestone, textiles and coal were in critical demand between Yorkshire and Lancashire at this time where trains were still only beginning to happen. Committees in Bradford and Liverpool formed and for a while disputed over their different respective plans for the route Following appeasement, the route as proposed via engineers John Longbotham and James Brindley was built at a cost of nearly £260, 000 and a length of 109 miles. The first phase, from Bingley to Shipley was up and running by 1774. By this time, Brindley had passed, and Longbotham had taken over as chief engineer. The construction from the Liverpool end reached Wigan in 1781.
The canal's overall construction spanned five decades, delayed further by money and disputes and also the colonial war in the late 1700s. Trade from Yorkshire to Liverpool was already brisk by the time construction finished, including branches - significantly the ones to Bradford and Wigan. Although both steam and horse drawn railways were available by 1800, the canal continued to thrive for a century.
Horse drawn barges would last impressively until 1960 while industrial trade remaining until the 1980s, by which time the bulk of such work was being done, quite inevitably by trains and lorries.
Today, the Leeds and Liverpool canal stretches for 127 miles, crossing the Pennines between the two cities, with additional branches bringing people - and still business - to and from other towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire on its journey. 91 locks are included, notably the notorious 5 Locks at Bingley, which take an apparent 3-4 hours to negotiate.
The towpath is used heavily by both walkers and cyclists on its route, with the Leeds end being notably active especially during commuter hours. At the newly developed Granary Wharf, the canal basin area has been heavily redeveloped in recent years while the new southern entrance to Leeds station also providing additionally quick access to the canal route.

I make it a habit of asking thin Japanese people for dietary advice. When Professor Y, the thinnest colleague on my corridor, recommended foods that increase intestinal bacteria such as fermented (rotten?) soya beans or nattou (pictured above), I am afraid I thought him a quack.
Recent research (Scheiman et al., 2019) has shown that certain large intestinal bacteria are found in the bowels of marathon runners, and that feeding these same bacteria, particularly veillonella atypica, to mice allows them to run up to 13% more on a treadmill. These bacteria are thought to aid in the breakdown of lactate, which allows us to exercise more.
The consumption of nattou increases the presence of some, and decreases the presence of other, bacteria in the bowels. One of the bacteria that nattou is found to increase, is veillonella (Fujisawa,Shinohara, Kishimoto & Terada, 2006, Table 4).
From an evolutionary perspective, in our pre-agrarian, (hunter) gatherer past humans must have eaten a lot of gathered foods at times beyond their usual sell by dates. In other words, for the majority of our evolutionary past, we ate quite a lot of rotten stuff, and our bodies presumably evolved to thrive on it.
Professor Y is no quack, but a very thin Japanese diet guru.

A significant increase in ceramic (incl. zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide) restorations has been noted in recent years, as has the steady rise of metal free restorations. A trend which will continue to gather force. CLEARFIL™ ESTHETIC CEMENT has been developed against this background. CLEARFIL™ ESTHETIC CEMENT is available in 5 color shades which can be used with CLEARFIL™ CERAMIC PRIMER to offer strong adhesion to esthetic materials.
The cement offers a dual-curing system; the self-curing system reduces the polymerization stress in the adhesion interface due to the self-etching primer “ED Primer II” including accelerators, and the light-curing generates good marginal sealing of the restoration and high wear resistance of the cement surface. The practical TRY IN PASTEs in identical colors allow you to test the color you wish to use for the restoration. The TRY IN PASTE can be easily and quickly washed away. The practical automix syringe automatically mixes the two pastes of the cement. The cement can be applied directly in the restoration causing nearly no air bubbles.

The threats against Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman in Arabic Major Avichay Adraee have increased since Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense, leading to increased security for Adraee and other IDF officials.
Adraee, who often appears in Arab media to state the IDF's position, was the target of a wanted poster uploaded to Hamas' official website during the last military operation in Gaza. In addition, insults and threats against the Israeli officer have intensified and his pictures and personal data widely distributed in social networks and pro-Palestinian internet forums. One such picture was edited to include a bloodstain on Adraee's forehead, a red swastika and Adolf Hitler's portrait.
An army spokesman says Adraee – who is considered to be the IDF's public face in the Arab world – has received threats in the past but those have increased and intensified due to the last operation in the Gaza Strip. Many of the threats came via Adraee’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, which are among the most popular of the IDF Spokesperson's internet channels.
Pray for safety for Avichay Adraee and other IDF officials as they face increased threats from enemies of Israel, and pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray that many in the Arab world will listen to the IDF Spokesman and consider his points of view in the battle for ideas in the Middle East.

Improving soils through movable Kraals to enhance productivity of fodder crops
Nathaniel Dube and his wife are the proud owners of a healthy herd of 35 beasts. Like most farmers with large herds, there isn’t always enough forage for his cattle in the grazing land, especially in the dry seasons. The Dubes were provided with fodder seed by the Livestock project, which has assisted them to grow supplementary nutritious food for their cattle. Their soils are unfortunately of poor quality so in order to improve them, the Dubes are using movable kraals to enhance the soild quality and boost their productivity. There were also taught how to identify diseases, castration, dehorning and other animal husbandry practices. Armed with knowledge on providing more nutritious feed for his animals and taking care of their general health, Nathaniel looks forward to selling his cattle at higher prices, when the dry season approaches.

Whyalla. Population 21,200.
Hummock Hill was sighted and named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 and soon after given French names by Captain Baudin. The first pastoral runs were taken out here in the 1850s as it had the Middle Back ranges, coastal access and Port Augusta not too far distant. One of the early pastoralists was James Patterson who took out the Iron Knob leasehold of over 160 square miles in 1854 near Iron Knob. To the north and west of his leasehold was that of James Loudon who took out Caroona station in 1862. Other leaseholds in the region of Whyalla were Point Lowly, Pandurra and Middleback. In the early 1870s Loudon sold Caroona to Sir Samuel Davenport and Sir John Morphett and it was Davenport, with his interest in minerals and mining, who sent the first ore samples to England in 1878 for analysis. This resulted in a mining lease taken out in 1880 by Ernest Siekman. The lease lapsed as he did not pay the annual rental. BHP took out nine mining leases in 1896 and the future of iron Knob and the future Whyalla began. BHP began taking iron ore for smelting to Port Augusta in 1899 which took bullock drays two days. The Hundred of Randell which covered this area was declared in 1895 as interest in the ore deposits increased.
In 1896 the government released land fronting Spencers Gulf for lease. One of the first to take up land where Whyalla stands was Humphrey Cowled who leased 30,000 acres on the gulf which he called Nonowie. The town of Hummock Hill emerged in 1900 after BHP developed their ore leases. The ore was used for flux in the Port Pirie smelter and it was shipped across Spencers Gulf. Most of the early settler families at Hummock Hill also came by ship across the gulf from Port Pirie. These families remained the backbone of the Whyalla population until World War Two. In 1900 BHP proposed to the government of SA to enact a bill that would allow them to build a tramway from Iron Knob to Hummock Hill on the coast with a permanent leasehold of the route. Port Augusta Council opposed this as they wanted the tramway built to Port Augusta and its already existing port. There was some logic in this opposition as a tramway to Port Augusta would be 46 miles in length whereas the tramway to Hummock Hill was about 35 miles, not a significantly shorter distance. The government enacted legislation for a BHP tramway to Hummock Hill in 1901 and BHP had developed a small jetty and port by 1903. At the same time the town of Hummock Hill emerged partly on BHP leasehold land. By 1905 the settlement had its first school, a general store and a tin Institute in which the school was conducted. Church services were also held in the hall. In 1903 the community was pleased when Mr Delprat, the general manager of the Broken Hill mine visited Hummock Hill and Iron Knob. The first hotel opened in 1905 on the site that later became the Whyalla Hotel 20 or so years later. The beer was shipped to the hotel from Port Pirie. The isolation of Hummock Hill was reduced when a telephone service began in 1911. Gradually stone houses replaced early tin and timber houses and the town took shape. The government officially surveyed and changed the name of the town to Whyalla in 1914 which means “sound of the sea” in a local Aboriginal language. The new solid Institute was opened in 1920 by Mr Delprat the BHP manager in Broken Hill. At the time Whyalla had a population of around 1,000 people with sporting clubs, RSL, banks, and commercial enterprises. Water was shipped from Port Pirie when necessary. BHP established a dairy to provide milk for the residents and a small desalination plant was built to provide additional fresh water. The impressive red ironstone buildings, often in the Art Deco style were erected in the late 1930s or early 1940s as the city’s industrial base expanded to steel making and ship building. The iron stone Whyalla Hotel opened in 1933. It was enlarged in 1940. This was a company town run by BHP with the exception of the Post Office, the School and the Police Station run by the government and the commercial enterprises of the town. BHP was a paternalistic employer and during the Depression of the 1930s as work slowed BHP found other jobs for married male employees such as re grading the tramway from Iron Knob etc.
During World War One Mr Delprat had suggested a steel furnace and steel works in Whyalla but this did not happen. The steel industry in Australia began with a small furnace and plant at Lithgow in the Blue Mountains in 1901. This plant was superseded by the bigger steel works in Newcastle in 1915 and Whyalla jetty was then expanded to ship iron ore direct to Newcastle. The third steel plant in Australia was established at Port Kembla (Wollongong) in 1928 and Iron Knob ore was also shipped there. With the rise of Hitler and Third Reich in Europe in 1933 and the ominous threat of world war Australia began to be concerned about its future as it was clear we were no longer isolated from the rest of the world. In 1937 the SA government passed legislation for the Morgan to Whyalla Murray River water pipeline to ensure water reliability for Whyalla and this was an essential for the first production of steel by BHP. The 1937 act set aside 1,000 acres for BHP to establish the plant and adjacent harbour. Progress was not hasty and the furnace and harbour began in 1939. After the outbreak of World War Two work progressed quickly. The first steel was produced in 1941 and called pig iron. Port Kembla also produced pig iron or steel and its export to Japan in 1938 led to the Attorney General Robert Menzies being called Pig Iron Bob by striking wharf unionists. The union slogan at the time was “No scrap for the Jap.” At that time Japan was fighting the Sino-Japanese War and needed more steel. The industrial dispute at Port Kembla ended in January 1939 when the waterside workers loaded the ships at Port Kembla. In 1940 the Royal Australia Navy asked BHP if they could build ships in Whyalla and this became urgent with the war and work began in 1940 on the hulls of several ships before the steel blast furnace was completed. The town grew rapidly with an influx of new workers and the construction of the hospital, an abattoirs, the Spencer Hotel, and the establishment of a Whyalla newspaper in 1941/42. During the War the population rose from 1,350 in 1937 to 7,900 in 1944. During most of World War Two BHP employed around 2,500 men and women with a peak of 2,750 employees in 1941. During the War BHP also established an ammunitions annex to produce shells for war arms. In a couple of years Whyalla produced 748,000 shell cases. The Combined Unions Council negotiated with BHP for workers’ wages and conditions. The newly employed women to offset the war time labour shortage were employed in the war effort in the shell annex, the tool room and in ship building. The women received 90% of the men’s wages for the same job.
The first ship was launched in 1941 and named the HMAS Whyalla (650 tonnes) which is now part of the Information Centre and Maritime Museum. It was one of four corvettes made in Whyalla for the Royal Australia Navy and they mainly worked as minesweepers and surveillance. During and after World War Two Whyalla built 36 ships for the Australian Navy, four for Indian navy and 20 for the British Admiralty. After the War most of the ships built in Whyalla shipyards were mainly cargo and iron ore carriers. A total of 63 ships, one oil rig and two barges were built in Whyalla by 1978 when shipbuilding was closed down. Most of the corvettes manufactured in Whyalla had South Australian town names- Whyalla, Gawler and Pirie. Whyalla also built the Kalgoorlie corvette for the Royal Navy. Other SA named corvettes built interstate were the Kapunda, the Glenelg and the Wallaroo. After the war BHP built commercial ships and eventually in 1958 they decided to build an integrated steel works in Whyalla (completed 1965) to process the ore into steel. Railway lines and ships were among the steel products produced.
As a shipbuilding site and producer of ammunition shells Whyalla needed special consideration and defence during World War Two. Defence installations were erected on Hummock Hill during the Second World War (1942) as Whyalla was a potential Japanese bombing target. Four anti-aircraft guns were on the ready at Hummock Hill. Other defence installations were built south of Cowell at Port Gibbon to forewarn of a Japanese attack. Complacency about war threats was overturned when German shipping mines were discovered in Spencers Gulf in 1940 designed to impede BHP ore carriers to Newcastle and Wollongong. Across the Gulf Port Pirie produced half of Britain’s lead so it too needed special protection. A survey recommended special defences for both Iron Triangle cities but only Whyalla got special protection. As the threat of Japan increased anti-aircraft guns were sent to Hummock Hill and arrived on 4 February 1942. Ten days later (14 th February) Singapore fell to the Japanese and on 19th February 1942 Darwin was bombed and partially destroyed by the Japanese. The hummock Hill anti-aircraft guns were operational by 23rd March. One Royal Navy ship guarded the entrance to Whyalla for most of the War until 1944. Search lights were installed at Hummock Hill late in 1942. But no threat emerged during the War. Air raid practices were conducted by BHP from time to time warning people to take cover when the BHP siren sounded. Despite the practices and preparations no raid occurred but the need for precaution was not unfounded. Three of BHP’s merchant ships were sunk off the coast of NSW on their way to or from Whyalla with a total loss of 85 lives. By early 1944 Australia’s home defences were known to be out of danger but gunners at Whyalla had been withdrawn in August 1943 and their tasks taken over by civilian defence.
By 1943 Whyalla had a population of 5,000 people and people began to query the lack of local government as the city was run by BHP. Local government was instituted in 1944 with three elected and three BHP appointed councillors. 1944 was also the year the Morgan to Whyalla water pipeline was completed. In 1960 Whyalla became a city as it had around 14,000 residents. The Commission system of local government was ended in 1970 when locals could finally elect all councillors to their city. By 1976 Whyalla had 33,000 residents, the largest city outside of Adelaide but with the loss of shipbuilding in 1978 the city’s population declined to about 20,000. BHP sold their Whyalla works to OneSteel in 2000 which changed its name to Arrium. Sanjeev Gupta bought the insolvent Arrium steelworks in 2017 and has revitalised it albeit with recent difficulties. The Whyalla steel works are critical to the whole of Australia as steel is only made at Whyalla and Port Kembla. Whyalla is the only plant to make steel rail for all sorts of uses not just railways. In late 2024 Whyalla steel works employed 4,800 people directly and countless more indirectly in other firms. (Port Kembla employs around 3,000 people.) Perhaps the future of the city will be revitalised even more if the hydrogen hub proceeds. Whether that happens or not billions of dollars of investment are needed to move Whyalla steel works away from coal fired furnaces to gas or hydrogen fired furnaces. On the way to Hummock Hill lookout in Gay St. we pass the Whyalla Institute with a classical façade with the date as 1920. This was also the site of the first timber Institute opened in February 1905. The first Whyalla School opened in this Institute in April 1905.The current port of Whyalla exports iron ore and steel mainly. Port Bonython 16 kms north of Whyalla mainly exports crude oil and liquid gas from South Australia’s Cooper basin.

Although the engine power had been slightly increased moving from the Mk I to Mk II Spitfire, the first major update of the aircraft to see squadron service - and incidentally become the most produced single variant - was the Spitfire Mark V. This introduced the Rolls Royce Merlin 45 series of engines, optimised for low or high flight. The fuselage was strengthened internally and the wing redesigned more than once: production ranged from the original "a" wing with 4 0.303 Browning machine guns on each side through the far more numerous "b" wing designed for a single 20mm cannon and retaining the two outboard Brownings to the universal "c" wing that could hold two 20mm cannon or one plus the Brownings. The stub outboard of the 20mm on this Spitfire shows it to have the last wing design. Spitfire Vs restored equality with the Me109F but proved inferior to the FW190A, requiring further development of the Merlin to again restore the balance.

The End
To be honest, after so many years, I just didn't see it coming.
My limited education and poor grammar, coupled with unfashionable dressing, always seemed to trouble and upset her.
I just don't know how I could have shown her more love, along with her family and friends.
She got the best of me and it wasn't enough.
With this series of four photos, my dreams will finally end…
Josie, I hope you're happy now.
Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.
History
The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.
System
Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.
The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.
The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.
Increasing access for women and girls to physical education and soccer helps them build confidence and a stronger social integration. Involving girls in soccer alongside with boys can help overcome prejudice that often contribute to social vulnerability of women and girls in a given society.
