Die ersten Arbeiten am U-Bahnhof Überseequartier hatten schon Anfang 2007 in offener Bauweise begonnen. Die Schildeinfahrt des Tunnelbohrers VERA von der HafenCity aus in die Haltestelle Jungfernstieg für den ersten Tunnel erfolgte am 13. Oktober 2009, die zweite am 3. Dezember 2010. Im Sommer 2010 begann der Innenausbau des U-Bahnhofs.
Als permanente Kunstinstallation befinden sich neben den Fahrtreppen bei jeder Lampe eckige Lautsprecher, aus denen Meeresrauschen und andere maritime Geräusche dringen, was den optischen „Unterwasser-Eindruck“ der mit zunehmender Tiefe dunkler werdenden Wandverkleidung akustisch verstärken soll. The first works on the subway station „Überseequartier“ in open coverage type had already begun in the beginning of 2007. The entry of VERAs cutterhead from harbour city into the stop Jungfernstieg for the first tunnel occurred October 13, 2009, second December 3, 2010. In summer 2010, the interior finish of the subway station began.
As a permanent art installation, angular loudspeakers are located beside the moving stairs with every lamp, from which sea rushing and other maritime sounds reach the ears, in order to intensify acoustically the optical "underwater impression" of the wall covering becoming darker with increasing depth. I walked down by the local creek the other afternoon. The recent rains have increased flow rates and the water in Cherry Creek is tea like from all the fallen leaves. Downstream about 75 feet I notice a disturbance in the water but don't see anything. Then I see something moving upstream on the surface of the water like a big fish. It gets a little closer then I realize it must be an otter swimming vigorously in my direction! It wasn't an otter but an American Mink (Mustela vision). It's in the weasel family and is almost as aquatic as an otter and a nocturnal hunter. They eat voles, frogs, crayfish, waterfowl and their eggs, mice, rabbits, snakes, and aquatic invertebrates.
It got to within about 6 feet of where I stood backlit with camera on the monopod, it looked up at me then swam a little circle around a rock then scurried out of the water on the opposite bank and darted under a fallen log! Wow, glad I had the long lens! Pinch me and I do believe in luck. Mendocino County, North California U.S.A.

Long-tailed macaques feel right at home at the ancient Khmer temple of Phra Prang Sam Yot in Lopburi.
Wikipedia: Phra Prang Sam Yot, also known as Phra Prang Sam Yod, is a 13th-century Angkorian temple in Lopburi, Thailand. The temple is currently a popular tourist destination. The temple was built by King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire in the early 13th century. Jayavarman intended for the temple to be an important location in the royal cult surrounding himself, as it would increase the legitimacy of his rule. In addition, the temple served to showcase the prestige of the Khmer Empire in Lopburi (then known as Lavo) as it had only recently captured the city from its Cham and Mon rivals.
The temple is famous for its large population of crab-eating macaque monkeys, which live in and around the temple grounds. The monkey population has always been present in Lopburi, but the start of the locally-held Monkey Buffet Festival in 1989 led to a dramatic increase in their population. The festival serves a dual purpose, drawing in tourists while also honoring the traditional Lopburi belief that monkeys are disciples of Jao Paw Phra Kan, a spirit which protects the city.

Because of the appearance of the citadel and toponymy of the places, it is assumed that these would have inspired the novel "The Castle in the Carpathians" by Jules Verne. The citadel is in a state of increased degradation, being practically a ruin.
Wikipedia: Pancake ice forms in conditions of high wave activity, in contrast to other types of sea ice formed under calm conditions. Pancake ice can form in two processes: (1) on water covered to some degree in slush, shuga or grease ice, or (2) from breaking of ice rind, nilas or even gray ice in agitated conditions.[3] If the waves are strong enough, pancakes can raft over each other, creating an uneven top and bottom surface on the ice. At this point, the pancake ice will fuse together and amalgamate into an ice sheet. This ice sheet will continue to grow over the winter. This process increases pancake ice's resilience, resulting in characteristic length scales less than ocean wavelengths and causing waves passing through pancake ice not to scatter.[3]

Talsarnau or Talsamau is a village and community in the Ardudwy area of Gwynedd in Wales. Its population was 525 in 2001, and had increased to 550 at the 2011 Census. The village of Talsarnau is situated on the A496 coastal road between Maentwrog and Harlech, close to the hamlets of Eisingrug and Llandecwyn.
The Theodore Roosevelt Lake Bridge is a vehicular bridge traversing Theodore Roosevelt Lake between Gila County and Maricopa County, Arizona.[2] Prior to its completion, traffic on Arizona SR 188 traveled directly on top of the Theodore Roosevelt Lake Dam. The bridge's completion relieved traffic over the dam. It had been designed to accommodate the width of two Ford Model-T automobiles, but increasing vehicle widths meant that the dam could only support one-way traffic until the new bridge opened.[3]
Per the United States Bureau of Reclamation, in 1995, along with other bridges such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge, the bridge was listed by the American Consulting Engineers Council as one of the top twelve bridge designs in the United States,[3] and is the "longest two-lane, single-span, steel-arch bridge in North America".[3] The build contract was awarded to Edward Kraemer & Sons, Inc. of Plain, Wisconsin,[1] with an overall total cost of $21.3 million USD in 1992.[3] It was initially painted sky blue, but has since turned white.[4]
Steel material for the bridge was originally a part of the Washington Street elevated in Boston, Massachusetts. When the elevated was torn down in 1987, the steel was shipped to Japan and melted into bars, then shipped again as building materials.[5]
This bridge was the beginning or ending of the Apache Trail, a very scenic dirt road all the way to Phoenix depending on which way you were going. It takes several hours to complete. Our monsoons destroyed parts of the trail some years ago and they just got it repaired and reopened it last year. It is a very scenic drive and worth while taking the trip if you love the outdoors in Arizona. It is one of my favorite drives but not for the faint of heart :)
The Apache Trail in Arizona was a stagecoach trail that ran through the Superstition Mountains. It was named the Apache Trail after the Apache Indians who originally used this trail to move through the Superstition Mountains.
The historic Apache Trail linked Apache Junction (33.4152°N 111.5807°W) at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Theodore Roosevelt Lake (33.6725°N 111.1531°W), through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest.
From Apache Junction heading northeast to Tortilla Flat, the Trail - named The E. Apache Trail (Arizona State Rt 88) at this point - is paved, turning into a dirt road a few miles east of Tortilla Flat, and continuing as such for nearly the full remainder of its length. The section east of Apache Junction is known officially as State Route 88. It is also the main traffic corridor through Apache Junction, turning into Main Street as the road passes into Mesa, and regains the Apache name by becoming Apache Boulevard in Tempe, ending at Mill Avenue. Prior to the completion of the Superstition Freeway in 1992, the Apache Junction portion of the Apache Trail was part of US Highway 60, which was rerouted to the Superstition Freeway once it was completed.
The Trail winds steeply through 40 miles (64 km) of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes like Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. The narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Dam; there are steep cliff drops and few safety barriers. The trail requires caution when driving and it is not recommended for large RVs, SUVs, or caravans. Some large RV rental companies in the US do not allow their vehicles to be taken on this route.
Fires and floods in 2019 resulted in a massive landslide between the Fish Creek Hill Overlook and Apache Lake Marina.[1] This section of road was closed for repairs, and reopened in September 2024.[2]

Another shot from last month's trip to Assynt that started with a stop for sunrise at Loch Droma beside the A835.
We had travelled through very thick fog on the way and it was a relief to see it thin as the sun rose and the breeze increased leaving pockets of mist around the hills.

Increased the ISO some to see if it provided better overall results ... I think the version at ISO 2500 was better. But then that could have also been because the wind was gusting more or less.
The winds were around 20 to 30 MPH last evening ... and bitter cold with temperatures heading towards 15 degrees F.
Had to have the gloves off to manually focus the lens ... brrrrr.

Curve adjustment to increase the overall contrast. 1 layer mask in soft light mode at 50% gray, using brush tool to lighten and darken some areas of the image, to bring out details. Topaz DeNoise to reduce noise. Topaz Clarity for additional boost in color and contrast.
The Maple Tree at Portland Japanese Garden in Spring. Decided to head up to our Japanese Garden to see how the tree looks like in Springtime. The garden is actually very beautiful this time of the year with spring flowers like Azaleas and Japanese Snowbells in bloom. Go check it out!

Esta cueva subterránea, cuyos tramos más antiguos se horadaron en piedra en el siglo XVI, es considerada como una de las catedrales del vino. Situada en Sotillo de la Ribera, Burgos, es la piedra angular de las Bodegas Ismael Arroyo cuya marca mas celebrada, Valsotillo, cría sus caldos en este histórico lugar.
Alrededor de 1200 metros cuadrados de galerías subterráneas, con paredes secas sin filtraciones de humedad, hacen de ella una bodega única en el mundo del vino, dotada de unas características especiales para la maduración y conservación del mismo.
En 1992 se realizó una ampliación para completar el parque de barricas y botelleros que incrementaron su belleza y que la conectaron con los edificios posteriores dedicados a las primeras fases de la elaboración del vino. Su visita es una delicia para los que llegan hasta aquí, ya que se encuentran ante unas instalaciones en las que se lleva criando el zumo de las uvas desde hace 400 años.
Los vinos de Ismael Arroyo, fundador de la marca ValSotillo así como de la denominación de origen Ribera del Duero en el último cuarto del siglo pasado, son envejecidos en esta histórica bodega en unas excelentes condiciones, de manera natural, a una temperatura constante de 11-12ºC. durante todo el año, junto a la ausencia de vibraciones, ruidos y luz, que permiten a sus caldos alcanzar una excelente crianza.
El proceso de crianza se realiza en barricas de roble americano y francés de 225 litros de capacidad y el resto del tiempo reposa en botella hasta su salida al mercado.
Estos caldos, elaborados ahora por los hijos y nietos de su fundador que continúan una larga tradición familiar, muestran una extraordinaria constitución, amplio bouquet y textura, que sólo puede alcanzarse en estas instalaciones singulares.
This underground cave, whose oldest sections were carved into stone in the 16th century, is considered one of the cathedrals of wine. Located in Sotillo de la Ribera, Burgos, it is the cornerstone of Bodegas Ismael Arroyo whose most celebrated brand, Valsotillo, raises its wines in this historic place.
Around 1,200 square meters of underground galleries, with dry walls without moisture leaks, make it a unique winery in the world of wine, equipped with special characteristics for its maturation and conservation.
In 1992, an extension was made to complete the park of barrels and bottle racks that increased its beauty and connected it with the later buildings dedicated to the first phases of wine production. Their visit is a delight for those who come here, since they find themselves in front of facilities where grape juice has been raised for 400 years.
The wines of Ismael Arroyo, founder of the ValSotillo brand as well as the Ribera del Duero designation of origin in the last quarter of the previous century, are aged in this historic winery in excellent conditions, naturally, at a constant temperature of 11-12ºC. throughout the year, together with the absence of vibrations, noise and light, which allow their wines to achieve excellent aging.
The aging process is carried out in American and French oak barrels with a capacity of 225 liters and the rest of the time it rests in the bottle until it is released to the market.
These wines, now made by the children and grandchildren of their founder who continue a long family tradition, show an extraordinary constitution, broad bouquet and texture, which can only be achieved in these unique facilities.
I just love the way that the yellow mustard plants increased the vividness of the lanscape around it.
The Harz Railway or Trans-Harz Railway (German: Harzquerbahn) was formerly the main line of the Harz Narrow
Schmalspurbahnen or HSB) and runs north to south right across the Harz Mountains from Wernigerode to Nordhausen. However, the tourist attraction of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz, is so great that the Brocken Railway is effectively the main line today. The Trans-Harz Railway joins up with the Selke Valley Railway to Quedlinburg at Eisfelder Talmühle where all trains are organised to make good connections.
Route
The line begins at the HSB's narrow gauge station in Nordhausen (Nordhausen Nord). It lies in northwest of and parallel to the standard gauge railway station. After passing the link line to the Nordhausen Tramway that joins it from the right, the railway bends towards the north and runs for 7 km to the station of Niedersachswerfen Ost almost parallel to the standard gauge line from Nordhausen to Ellrich (the South Harz Line). The Harz mountains begin beyond Ilfeld (km 10.7). Behind Netzkater (km 14.0) lies the station of Eisfelder Talmühle (km 17.3), where the Selke Valley Railway branches off in a curve to the right.
The Trans-Harz Railway continues to follow the B 81 federal road as far as Tiefenbachmühle halt (km 19.5) before turning in a westerly direction in order to reach the request stop of Sophienhof (km 21.0), the last stop in Thuringia. The line runs through spruce forests over the state border with Saxony-Anhalt. At Benneckenstein station (km 29.8) the line crosses the ridge at 530 m above NN, its highest point so far. It then runs downhill into the valley of the Warme Bode, where the halt of Sorge (km 33.4; 449 m above NN) is located. Next the route climbs to its next summit at 557 m. After Elend (km 41.6) the line reaches the junction with the Brocken Railway at Drei-Annen-Hohne station (km 46.4). In 2009 the construction of a new stub line from Elend to Braunlage was discussed (see South Harz Railway Company).
Behind Drei-Annen-Hohne the line runs steeply downhill and the railway reaches the 58 m long tunnel below the Thumkuhlenkopf. It is the only tunnel in the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway network. On emerging from the tunnel Wernigerode Castle can soon be seen in the distance. In the vicinity of the station at Steinerne Renne (km 54.5) the line enters one of the HSB's tightest curves with a 60-metre radius, before reaching the station of Wernigerode-Hasserode (km 56.3). The next stations en route are Hochschule Harz halt (formerly Wernigerode-Kirchstraße) and Westerntor station (where the Wernigerode-Westerntor Bahnbetriebswerk is found) at Wernigerode. Its terminus is the station at Wernigerode (km 60.5).
The first section of the Trans-Harz Railway to go into service on 12 July 1897 was the line from Nordhausen to Ilfeld. On 7 February 1898 it was extended as far as Netzkater and on 15 September that year to Benneckenstein. From the north the section Wernigerode to Drei-Annen-Hohne was completed on 20 June 1898. The remaining section between Drei-Annen-Hohne and Benneckenstein was finally opened on 27 March 1899 along with the line up to the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz mountains. The original operating company was the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway Company. After the compulsory acquisition of the line in 1949, the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn ran it until 1993.
From 1899 the Trans-Harz Railway crossed another metre gauge line at Sorge. This other line was operated by the South Harz Railway Company (SHE) and ran from Walkenried via Brunnenbachsmühle and Sorge to Tanne. A link line, initially just for passenger trains, was laid in 1913. In 1945 services between Sorge and Brunnenbachsmühle were closed, because this section crossed the Inner German Border. The section from Sorge to Tanne continued to be worked until 1958. The tracks were left on the border bridge until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Railway traffic has sharply increased in recent years on the section between Nordhausen and Ilfeld. Since 2004 Nordhausen hybrid-trams have run directly from Ilfeld into the tram network at Nordhausen. Other trains run to Eisfelder Talmühle and continue onto the Selke Valley Railway. Apart from one pair of steam trains, all services are worked by diesel railbuses. The only remaining goods trains on the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways work the line between Nordhausen and Eisfelder Talmühle. These regularly transport standard gauge ballast wagons from the Hartsteinwerken Unterberg on rollbocks to Nordhausen. A number of converted diesel locomotives are available for this, which have couplers and buffers at the right height for handling standard gauge goods wagons.[3]
After 1993 daily trains services between Eisfelder Talmühle and Drei-Annen-Hohne were restricted to four pairs of trains. Only two pairs were hauled by steam locomotives. In addition, between Drei Annen Hohne and Wernigerode through trains run on the Brocken–Wernigerode route, the majority being steam-hauled.

Its my short break at work now so I will do with a quick post. This is the first time I've seen acres & acres of white poppies in tassie. They are extremely beautiful to look at but according to one of the farm owner, these poppies are so highly potent.. they can kill a person if they pluck just a small handful to make heroine out of it. No wonder trespasser will be prosecuted! Hope everyone is doing well!

La musique était bizarre, comme si l'accordéoniste – que je ne voyais pas à cet instant – ne savait pas jouer de son instrument. Une "mélodie" hésitante, mais envoutante. Répétitive. Je me suis laissé guider par les notes, jusqu'à cette famille qui faisait la manche. Si la musique n'était pas extraordinaire, elle était obsédante et la scène qui s'offrait à moi était magique. Quatre personnages sur ce fond bleu, baignant dans une lumière chaude. Les rayons du soleil se concentraient sur le visage illuminé de la femme. J’ai hésité à m'approcher, de peur que l'enchantement ne soit rompu. Les notes maladroitement jouées enveloppaient la scène et renforçaient ce sentiment de vivre un moment irréel. Je n'ai pas osé prendre de photo. Je me suis éloigné. Cette famille déshéritée me mettait mal à l'aise. Pour la première fois, je me suis senti "voyeur". Vingt secondes plus tard, je suis revenu sur mes pas, estimant que cette photo, je la regretterai toute ma vie. J'ai mis un gros billet dans la casquette rouge tenue par la jeune mère et j'ai demandé si je pouvais les prendre en photo ? Un simple acquiescement de la tête, à peine perceptible, de la jeune femme. J'ai fait deux photos. Pas une de plus.

Oaxaca (Mexico) - I was leaving the "basilica de nuestro senora de saledad", where I had taken some pictures. As it was dark I increased the sensitivity. Normal. But what is less is that when going out, I did not change the sensitivity, while there was an astonishing brightness at the end of the day.
That's when I heard an accordion. The music was weird, as if the accordionist - whom I couldn't see - didn't really know how to play his instrument. A hesitant "melody", but captivating like repetitive music.
I let myself be guided by the notes, until I saw this little family that appealed to charity. If the music was not extraordinary despite its haunting side, the scene before me was wonderful. Four figures on this blue background, bathed in a very warm light. The woman was overexposed by the ray of sunlight that hit her face.
I hesitated to approach, I do not know why, probably for fear that this spectacle does not stop. May the enchantment be broken. The awkwardly played notes enveloped the stage and reinforced this feeling of living an unreal moment. Magic.
Finally I did not dare to take the photo and I walked away. After twenty seconds I changed my mind - I'm still a rationalist - and I retraced my steps, telling myself that this photo, I will regret it all my life.

After the fall of the Roman Empire beginning in the 6th century, Germanic Alemannic peoples increased their influence on this area of present-day Switzerland. After receiving a new crew at Wauhatchie for the trip to Nashville, K442 passes MP139 on the Chattanooga subdivision. This is also where Whiteside Tunnel, or Dang Ole Matt Jones Tunnel, Man!, as the locals call it, sits as it watches the many trains that was it was built to have run through it, but never actually saw due to a new route next to it that diverts it. The artistic reputation of Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) has increased considerably in recent years. Not helped or hindered (cross out what is desired) by academic training, he developed a unique style in which he balances painting and drawing. The fact that he paints with Indian ink is already challenging, the subtle addition of colored pencil is completely unusual.
Spilliaert's depictions are highly symbolic (see also previous post in this stream). In a late ink painting like 'Firebreak between the firs' the year is important to understand the scope. In 1944, the last year of the Second World War, Hitler's defeat was already looming, but the end was bitter. Hunger, cold and the death of hundreds of thousands of soldiers preceded peace.
This exhibition in The Hague builds a bridge between Léon Spilliaert and Dirk Braeckman, who never knew each other. What is that bridge? “That is visualizing what you cannot see,” says curator Thijs de Raedt. “Both are nocturnal animals that intuitively head for the magic of deep black.”
The fact that we now see similarities between the two artists also has to do with the revaluation of symbolism and Spilliaert in particular. In the 1970s, there was a renewed sensitivity to indeterminate and uncanny places. In Belgium, a victim of two World Wars, people are perhaps more receptive to that than elsewhere.
The Urban Fox
Wild foxes have learned to adapt to the urban environment in order to survive. By nature, foxes are nocturnal and hunt at night, whereas the urban fox has adapted its behavior to survive and can be seen during daylight hours.
Locally, a fox vixen has located her den in the foundational remains of a razed building complex along the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore. She has six Kits, which can be seen frolicking in the debris and along the dunes during the day. The fox family has become local celebrities and unfortunately people have begun feeding them. Never feed wild animals. Although you may feel as if you’re helping them survive, you are actually harming them. Feeding foxes can alter their natural behavior and they may lose its fear of humans.

Red Fox
The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

Since 2007, Mabelle Arts has brought together artists, architects, builders and gardeners with thousands of community members of all ages and backgrounds to reimagine Mabelle Park from the abandoned edge of a thoroughfare to a vibrant artpark and arts and culture hub.
Mabelle Park represents a new kind of social infrastructure - one that can more nimbly respond to community needs and desires and increase collective resiliency.
It's another tradition in our house to build and decorate a gingerbread house over the Christmas holidays. My kids are getting older (and aren't kids any more) but they still wanted to do this, adding references to "Breaking Bad" and Stephen King's "The Shining" much to the horror of their parents.
These are two blobs of homemade sticky sugar candy used to glue the house together. The large blob is about 5mm across, and the whole thing was shot with the Helios 44M at f/8 on the Kopil Bellowsmat at full extension. Lit with mobile phone torches.
In PP, I have sharpened a little, increased contrast and removed a couple of blemishes.
Other 2021 themes that could be chosen include orange, circles, treasured (looks like amber), sidelit and maybe more.

Only a few snow geese when I arrived early but did get this small blast off. Never did get any big ones later. Not quite in focus.
Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Area with nearly 1,000,000 migrating snow geese. The count the day before was 928,721 and likely kept going up. Also 1500 trumpeter swans but only 20 eagles. Numbers will likely increase before they continue north. Had terrible focus and exposure issues, many photos unusable. Sorry for so many and so many similar ones, just saving to my album. No need to comment.
You can see the gradual increasing of the first Caucasian ridge on the north area of this great montane area - the Pasture (Pastbishchnyy in transliterated Russian) one, namely one of its parts - Jinal one. In the left corner the laccolithic mounts Beshtau and Mashuk are visible
AAW: October 14 - 20: Industrial
WIT: Looked around for industrial looking scenes, and right under my nose was this set of pipes that looked pretty industrial. In post, added some grain, increased contrast and saturation to give a post-apocalyptic look to it.
Stämpfli Express, the world’s largest rowing boat, made in Switzerland.. 144 feet long and seating 24. They were only 20 rowers :( for this shot. They were at Jordan Lake.
