After receiving a new crew at Wauhatchie for the trip to Nashville, K442 passes MP139 on the Chattanooga subdivision. This is also where Whiteside Tunnel, or Dang Ole Matt Jones Tunnel, Man!, as the locals call it, sits as it watches the many trains that was it was built to have run through it, but never actually saw due to a new route next to it that diverts it. Leading K442 is SD50-3 8536, at the time one of only 5 SD50 series locomotives active on CSX, or any Class 1 railroad for that matter. 11-27-20
I was lucky to get a bit of sun out of a grey sky as #392 swings off the Oakville Sub on to the Halton Sub.
The scene is now changed quite a bit as the station has been moved off-site and the Oakville Sub is now triple track to accommodate increased GO Train traffic.
The water from the spring is believed to have a magical power to increase the fortune. It is a tradition to wash coins and bills with the water to effectuate the magic.
It is a folk belief rather than Shintoism.
Sarasvati is originally an Indian goddess of water but other roles were attached later such as music, art, war and speech. Benzaiten comes from its Chinese translation meaning the "goddess of eloquence (弁才天)." It was wrongly or intentionally written as Benzaiten (弁"財"天) in Japan due to the same pronunciation, which means the goddess of speech and fortune.
I suppose this makes the background of money laundering practice.
The shrine's priests may be embarrassed to see it so widespread globally.
The shrine also enshrines Ugajin (宇賀神) that is a god or a spectre that looks like a snake with human head, which is also believed to bring good fortune.
It is an interesting place of religious syncretism.
The Large figure in a shelter sculpture was created between 1985 and 1986, a few months before the death of Henry Moore, considered the most important British sculptor of the 20th century. The value of the work has been increased by its size, almost three times larger than the sculptures considered to be the most significant references to Moore, and because there are only two copies in existence, when the average edition of the British artist's sculptures is from seven to nine pieces. The work acquired by the central and Basque governments was made of bronze, is over seven meters tall and weighs about 20,000 kilograms.
The monumental sculpture will be located on a hill near the Gernika Assembly House, about 30 kilometers from Bilbao. The Basque artist Eduardo Chillida has supervised the choice of the place chosen to locate Moore's work, since his Gure aitaren etxean sculpture ensemble, inaugurated in 1987, stands a few meters away.
I loved the dark burgundy section of this tunnel. Being lucky enough to catch the light trail passing through the centre of the frame really adds to it too (and that red glow reflection on the poster!).
Moments prior I had been taking shots just before the tunnel. A couple of guys wandered past and stopped. My heart sank- they were going to engage us in conversation. I always feel so, so awkward as I really just want to take my photographs and be left alone. They were perfectly nice but there were loads of questions about what Michael and I were doing. Anxiety levels increased, embarrassment increased. Argh.
The Malvaceae, or the mallows, are a family of flowering plants estimated to contain 243 genera with 4225+ species. Well-known members of this family include okra, cotton, and cacao. The largest genera in terms of number of species include Hibiscus (300 species), Sterculia (250 species), Dombeya (250 species), Pavonia (200 species), and Sida (200 species).
Large deciduous tree, occasionally on deciduous forested hills and slopes. The tree is commonly known as Kullu (in Hindi), Kandol (in Marathi) and Indian Ghost Tree (in English).
Gum karaya is exuded from Sterculia urens, a large bushy tree growing to about 30 ft (10 m) in height on the dry rocky hills and plateaus of central and northern India. Originally introduced as a substitute for gum tragacanth, many uses were found and commercial quantities increased rapidly until its use became second only to that of gum arabic.

Have not been very active on flickr this past week. The dense haze here has become a real obstacle for photo shooting! But it is starting to get better today.

Soo Line train 214, powered by lone EMD SD60M No. 6061, waits for a signal at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 27, 1992. Passing by on the main line is Amtrak train 338 to Chicago, substituted with Chicago Metra commuter equipment. For several years in the early 1990’s, Amtrak would borrow some equipment from Metra to substitute on the Chicago to Milwaukee “Hiawatha” corridor during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This would allow Amtrak to move equipment normally used on the run to expand capacity on other trains to handle increased holiday ridership.

The artistic reputation of Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) has increased considerably in recent years. Not helped or hindered (cross out what is desired) by academic training, he developed a unique style in which he balances painting and drawing. The fact that he paints with Indian ink is already challenging, the subtle addition of colored pencil is completely unusual.
Spilliaert's depictions are highly symbolic (see also previous post in this stream). In a late ink painting like 'Firebreak between the firs' the year is important to understand the scope. In 1944, the last year of the Second World War, Hitler's defeat was already looming, but the end was bitter. Hunger, cold and the death of hundreds of thousands of soldiers preceded peace.
This exhibition in The Hague builds a bridge between Léon Spilliaert and Dirk Braeckman, who never knew each other. What is that bridge? “That is visualizing what you cannot see,” says curator Thijs de Raedt. “Both are nocturnal animals that intuitively head for the magic of deep black.”
The fact that we now see similarities between the two artists also has to do with the revaluation of symbolism and Spilliaert in particular. In the 1970s, there was a renewed sensitivity to indeterminate and uncanny places. In Belgium, a victim of two World Wars, people are perhaps more receptive to that than elsewhere.

Last year, my photography journey was far from fulfilling, leaving me with a sense of dissatisfaction. Despite my efforts, my creative growth appeared to have reached a standstill, as I repeatedly found myself reverting to familiar approaches. While there were moments where I saw potential in some photos, I overall felt that they didn’t meet the vision I had in mind. It became evident that I didn’t give myself the necessary space to evolve.
Moreover, the increasing demands of my work had a significant impact on my eyesight. The discomfort from two instances of eye infection added to my frustration, which was a real bummer, and I found myself feeling drained more often.
The overall experience left me yearning for more time to rest, refine my photography approach, and hone my craft, thereby pushing my boundaries.

A member of the leaf warbler family, the beautiful olive and yellow Willow Warbler is also one of our most widespread.
A summer visitor to the Britain & Ireland, the Willow Warbler’s cascading, liquid song can be heard from mid-April and is arguably one of the most beautiful sounds of the spring. Willow Warblers can be found breeding across Britain & Ireland.
The Willow Warbler population has experienced mixed fortunes in the UK, where it is Amber-listed. It is declining across England and Wales but increasing in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is thought that the northern populations winter in a slightly different area from the southern birds and that this difference might contribute to the overall UK trend.

For the doubters among my followers...yep, I got the yip.
When I posted the Red-tailed Hawk yesterday, I mentioned that it flew across the prairie dog town while I was attempting to photograph a jump yip. Actually, I had already managed to get that shot about ten minutes before the hawk entered the scene.
During each trip to Black-tailed Prairie dog country, I've been rather intensively observing the little rascals with the intent of increasing my odds of capturing the jump yip. The payoff was that I captured nine of them during our latest trip.
Some info on jump yip behavior:
Black-tailed Prairie Dogs have a vast "vocabulary". Some scientists consider their vocalizations to be a language. They can communicate the type of predator/threat, the size, the color and whether it's on the ground or airborne.
One of their communications is called a "jump-yip" where one will stand up, seemingly without reason, on its haunches, lean back its head and call out "wee-oo." One of the main theories for this behavior has been that it's a signal of "all clear". But research has shown that they perform the jump-yip before, during and after dangerous events. Some researchers now conclude the whole point of jump-yipping is for one prairie dog to assess the alertness and responsiveness of his or her associates.

At 16:45 on the 27th, a large crowd gathered outside the blockade area at the intersection of Middle Wulumuqi (Urumqi) Road and Wu Yuan Road. A traffic policeman tries to disperse the crowd so that a large number of police cars can enter the blockade area. The crowd surrounds him and were raising their smartphones to shoot videos at him in order to prevent him from committing violent acts.
Shortly afterwards, the police cars stepped in closer and the crowd had to give way. The police didn't actually plan to do it at daylight. They used the rest of the day to keep increasing the number of police officers until later that night to make the arrest.
On the night of 26 November 2022, a demonstration took place in Middle Wulumuqi (Urumqi) Road, Shanghai in memory of the victims of the fire in Wulumuqi (Urumqi), Xinjiang, the casualties of which were caused by the building being locked up as a result of absurd anti-epidemic measures which made it impossible for residents to escape. The police ended up arresting many of the demonstrators and loading three police buses:

On the evening of the 27th, a large area of the neighbourhood where the demonstration took place last night was suddenly blocked off, allowing only people to leave and not enter, perhaps to prevent further demonstrations from gathering there.. A large number of people gathered at the intersections of the blocked-off neighbourhoods, which gradually festered into a new demonstration.

The Urban Fox
Wild foxes have learned to adapt to the urban environment in order to survive. By nature, foxes are nocturnal and hunt at night, whereas the urban fox has adapted its behavior to survive and can be seen during daylight hours.
Locally, a fox vixen has located her den in the foundational remains of a razed building complex along the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore. She has six Kits, which can be seen frolicking in the debris and along the dunes during the day. The fox family has become local celebrities and unfortunately people have begun feeding them. Never feed wild animals. Although you may feel as if you’re helping them survive, you are actually harming them. Feeding foxes can alter their natural behavior and they may lose its fear of humans.
“Wildlife that is fed by people become less experienced at forging for their natural food and may become dependent on handouts that are not a part of their natural diets. This is especially true in juvenile animals that have not yet developed their own foraging skills and have little ability to fend for themselves once handouts cease.” ~ Julie King, Senior Wildlife Biologist

Red Fox
The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

Salton Sea is a lake in California that got (re)created accidentally in 1905 when an irrigation canal of the Colorado River broke and flooded the Salton Basin for two years. After repairing the irrigation canal, inflow of fresh water stopped. It became a popular resort destination until several fish and bird die offs occurred in the 1980s. The die-offs were caused by toxic farm runoffs which increased the salinity of the water. More efficient farming approaches lead to a reduction water runoffs. This caused the water levels to drop, leading to clouds of toxic dust in the current century.
Salton Sea is peppered with ghost towns and ruins. This was taken in Bombay Beach. If you like to take pictures, spend a week in the area.
Having experienced a high the previous night from extensive auroras we hoped for a repeat night. NOAA forecasted a dip in aurora activity during the day but predicted increased activity by nightfall. As the day rolled by so did the clouds in the south of Iceland by Jökulsárlón. Hoping to find some clear skies Aaron, Alan, Rebecca, and I headed east after sunset towards Vestrahorn, where clouds were forecasted to subside by the morning hours. On our way we ended up stopping at Höfn for a langoustine dinner. The grilled langoustine was delicious: tender, buttery, and sweet. It set the stage for a wondrous night.
Once we arrived at Vestrahorn the near full moon aided us in scouting out the location. While scouting we noticed some faint aurora low in the sky. Though weak it was still a pleasure to see and photograph but soon the incoming clouds spoiled the show. Hence we called it a night in our Happy Campers and waited it out for the morning hours.
Snoozing away, Aaron suddenly opened our van door and yelled for us to get up at 5am. The majority of the clouds had cleared and the aurora activity picked up to a KP4. From then on time flew by as we blasted away until after sunrise.

The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widespread and largest species of the flamingo family. It is found in Africa, on the Indian subcontinent, in the Middle East, and in southern Europe.
This is the largest species of flamingo, averaging 110–150 cm (43–59 in) tall and weighing 2–4 kg (4.4–8.8 lb). The largest male flamingos have been recorded at up to 187 cm (74 in) tall and 4.5 kg (9.9 lb). It is closely related to the American flamingo and Chilean flamingo, with which it has sometimes been considered conspecific.
Subadult with gray white coloration
Like all flamingos, this species lays a single chalky-white egg on a mud mound. Most of the plumage is pinkish white, but the wing coverts are red and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black. The bill is pink with a restricted black tip, and the legs are entirely pink. The call is a goose-like honking.
Subadult flamingos are whitish grey and only attain the pink coloration several years into their adult life. The coloration comes from the carotenoid pigments in the organisms that live in their feeding grounds. Secretions of the uropygial gland also contain carotenoids. During the breeding season, greater flamingos increase the frequency of their spreading uropygial secretions over their feathers and thereby enhance their color. This cosmetic use of uropygial secretions has been described as applying "make-up".
The bird resides in mudflats and shallow coastal lagoons with salt water. Using its feet, the bird stirs up the mud, then sucks water through its bill and filters out small shrimp, seeds, blue-green algae, microscopic organisms, and mollusks. The greater flamingo feeds with its head down, and its upper jaw is movable and not rigidly fixed to its skull.

Warm May weather has triggered an early runoff in the creeks, streams and rivers. We are at least 2 weeks ahead of average stream flow for this date.
This is called the Cascade Falls area of Chalk Creek. The leaves are not fully out yet.
Cormorants were once entirely coastal in habits but we have seen an increasing trend for inland breeding, a behaviour first documented here in the 1950s.
Our population is made up of birds from two different races, one of which – the continental race – is responsible for the colonisation of inland waterbodies. Cormorants make use of regular roosting sites, with some individuals remarkably faithful to these over time.
The expansion inland has brought the Cormorant into conflict with commercial fisheries and anglers, and the presence of these birds has not been welcomed by all.
