"Sault Ste. Marie (/ˈsuː seɪnt məˈriː/ SOO-seint-ma-REE) is a city on the St. Marys River in Ontario, Canada, close to the Canada–US border. It is the seat of the Algoma District and the third largest city in Northern Ontario, after Sudbury and Thunder Bay.

The Ojibwe, the indigenous Anishinaabe inhabitants of the area, call this area Baawitigong, meaning "place of the rapids." They used this as a regional meeting place during whitefish season in the St. Mary's Rapids. (The anglicized form of this name, Bawating, is used in institutional and geographic names in the area.)

To the south, across the river, is the United States and the Michigan city of the same name. These two communities were one city until a new treaty after the War of 1812 established the border between Canada and the United States in this area at the St. Mary's River. In the 21st century, the two cities are joined by the International Bridge, which connects Interstate 75 on the Michigan side, and Huron Street (and former Ontario Secondary Highway 550B) on the Ontario side. Shipping traffic in the Great Lakes system bypasses the Saint Mary's Rapids via the American Soo Locks, the world's busiest canal in terms of tonnage that passes through it, while smaller recreational and tour boats use the Canadian Sault Ste. Marie Canal.

French colonists referred to the rapids on the river as Les Saults de Ste. Marie and the village name was derived from that. The rapids and cascades of the St. Mary's River descend more than 6 m (20 ft) from the level of Lake Superior to the level of the lower lakes. Hundreds of years ago, this slowed shipping traffic, requiring an overland portage of boats and cargo from one lake to the other. The entire name translates to "Saint Mary's Rapids" or "Saint Mary's Falls". The word sault is pronounced [so] in French, and /suː/ in the English pronunciation of the city name. Residents of the city are called Saultites.

Sault Ste. Marie is bordered to the east by the Rankin and Garden River First Nation reserves, and to the west by Prince Township. To the north, the city is bordered by an unincorporated portion of Algoma District, which includes the local services boards of Aweres, Batchawana Bay, Goulais and District, Peace Tree and Searchmont. The city's census agglomeration, including the townships of Laird, Prince and Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional and the First Nations reserves of Garden River and Rankin, had a total population of 79,800 in 2011.

Native American settlements, mostly of Ojibwe-speaking peoples, existed here for more than 500 years. In the late 17th century, French Jesuit missionaries established a mission at the First Nations village. This was followed by development of a fur trading post and larger settlement, as traders, trappers and Native Americans were attracted to the community. It was considered one community and part of Canada until after the War of 1812 and settlement of the border between Canada and the US at the Ste. Mary's River. At that time, the US prohibited British traders from any longer operating in its territory, and the areas separated by the river began to develop as two communities, both named Sault Ste. The black-naped monarch or black-naped blue flycatcher (Hypothymis azurea) is a slim and agile passerine bird belonging to the family of monarch flycatchers. They are sexually dimorphic with males having a distinctive black patch on the back of the head and a narrow black half collar ("necklace") while the female is duller and lacks the black markings. They have a call that is similar to that of the Asian paradise flycatcher and in tropical forest habitats pairs may join mixed-species foraging flocks. Populations differ slightly in plumage colour and sizes.

The adult male black-naped monarch is about 16 cm long, and is mainly pale azure blue apart from a whitish lower belly. It has a black nape and a narrow black gorget. The female is duller and lacks the black markings. Her wings and back are grey-brown. There are however several geographically separated breeding populations that differ in the extent and shade of markings.

The Indian peninsula (includes sykesi of Stuart Baker) has subspecies styani which has the black markings very distinct. Males of the Sri Lankan race H. a. ceylonensis lack the black nape and gorget and the shade is more purplish. The subspecies of the Andaman Islands, tytleri, has the underparts blue grey. The form on Car Nicobar Island idiochroa has a greyish white belly while nicobarica from the southern Nicobars has a smaller and finer bill. The colour of the gape is yellowish to green.

I've often received requests to release the Flying Whale's tree separately. This tree is not the same but I tried to make it with the similar atmosphere as much as possible :)

They have thin branches compared to my other trees and some of them are shaped in such a way that small birds and animals can easily perch on the branches, as shown in the image.

This product has a significantly specification change from the previous plants.

The set does not include a HUD, and instead, it is now possible to make batch settings from the tree's dialog. In the dialog option [AreaOfEffect], you can select the area to change at a time. The neat thing about this photo is that of course the night street lights bathed it in that wonderful orange glow that you always capture at night on a camera... But I saw much more, especially once I tweaked it... Its like I wear glasses that are the color of the digital filters I typically use to tweak photos, and I thus saw this image... its not what one really saw in that alleyway, its not what the camera first captured... but rather, its the dude's-eye-view...

Barkley Sound lies south of Ucluelet and north of Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island, covering an area of approximately 800 square kilometres that includes hundreds of islands, none of which is larger than 2 kilometres across.

The Water Hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, is in the family Pontederiaceae, which includes other aquatic plants such as Pickerelweed and the Mud Plantains. It is native to Brazil. Unlike Pickerelweeds, which root themselves in the mud at the shoreline, Water Hyacinth is free-floating, consisting of wide rosettes of thick round or fan-shaped leaves, each leafstalk with a bulbous swelling near the base that provides flotation. The feathery roots dangle into the water, and the violet-blue flowers bloom on stalks that can extend as much as three feet above the plant. Water Hyacinth is the fastest-reproducing plant that has ever been measured--in addition to seeds, the plant can reproduce asexually by sending out horizontal runners called "stolons" which produce daughter plants. A single plant is capable of producing as many as 600 offspring within four months. A patch of Water Hyacinth can easily double its size in less than two weeks, and form thick dense mats in which most of the individual plants are linked to each other through stolons.

Because of its free-floating lifestyle and its attractive foliage and flowers, Water Hyacinth has long been popular for use as an ornamental plant in water gardens, fish ponds and aquariums, and has been widely exported around the world (many Internet aquarium shops sell it). As a result, it is one of the most common invasive plants on earth, and has now been established in over 50 countries in Africa, Asia and Australia. In the US, Water Hyacinth has become introduced throughout the Southeast, from North Carolina to Texas, and also in southern California and Hawaii. The plants have also been found in the wild in New York, Tennessee, Kentucky, Washington, Missouri, Arkansas and Oregon, but because the tropical Water Hyacinth cannot tolerate cold temperatures, they cannot survive the winter in these northern areas.

Once it becomes established, the plant can quickly cover an entire body of water, from shore to shore. The dense mats block out sunlight, killing off most of the native aquatic plants. They also reduce oxygen levels in the water, which can kill fish and other aquatic life. One acre of Water Hyacinth plants can weigh over 200 tons, enough to interfere with boats, making many rivers un-navigable, and to choke off water flow, turning the water stagnant. It also deposits about 500 tons of dead and rotted plant material on the bottom each year, leading to ponds and waterways being filled in.

It is believed that Water Hyacinth first entered Florida in 1884, by way of New Orleans. In 1884, at the New Orleans World Fair, a pavilion from Japan was giving out free Water Hyacinths as ornamental water plants (why the Japanese were giving out a plant from Brazil is a question that can no longer be answered.) One of the visitors to the World's Fair was Mrs WF Fuller from Florida, who took the lovely little plant with her back to Palatka, on the St John's River, and put it in her outdoors fish pond. When a sheet of Water Hyacinth covered her pond, she thinned it out, tossing some extra plants around her boat dock on the St John's River. By 1896, the plant covered more than 200 miles of river. When cattle rancher Eli Morgan saw how quickly the plant grew, he in turn decided it would make a good food source for his cattle, and transferred some Water Hyacinths to his ranch on the Kissimmee River. As it turned out, Water Hyacinths aren't very nutritious and the cattle didn't like them anyway. But the plants soon spread along the Kissimmee River, reaching Lake Okeechobee and fanning out across southern Florida. By the 1960's, Water Hyacinth mats covered some 120,000 acres of ponds and rivers all over Florida.

The state launched a multi-million dollar campaign to eradicate the invader. The plant was made illegal to import, keep, or release. Waterborne machines were developed to grind the mats into pulp, and large amounts of plant poisons were sprayed onto them. In some areas, two species of Hyacinth Weevils, insects from Brazil that kill the plants, were released as a form of biological control. Although reduced by over 98%, however, the plant defied all efforts to eradicate it. Today, Florida uses a constant program of "maintenance control" to keep the invasive plant at a tolerable level.

Cuckoo - Cuculus Canorus

The common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, Cuculiformes, which includes the roadrunners, the anis and the coucals.

This species is a widespread summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters in Africa. It is a brood parasite, which means it lays eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly of dunnocks, meadow pipits, and reed warblers. Although its eggs are larger than those of its hosts, the eggs in each type of host nest resemble the host's eggs. The adult too is a mimic, in its case of the sparrowhawk; since that species is a predator, the mimicry gives the female time to lay her eggs without being seen to do so.

The English word "cuckoo" comes from the Old French cucu and it first appears about 1240 in the poem Sumer Is Icumen In - "Summer has come in / Loudly sing, Cuckoo!" in modern English.

The scientific name is from Latin. Cuculus is "cuckoo" and canorus, "melodious ".

A study using stuffed bird models found that small birds are less likely to approach common cuckoos that have barred underparts similar to the Eurasian sparrowhawk, a predatory bird. Eurasian reed warblers were found more aggressive to cuckoos that looked less hawk-like, meaning that the resemblance to the hawk helps the cuckoo to access the nests of potential hosts. Other small birds, great tits and blue tits, showed alarm and avoided attending feeders on seeing either (mounted) sparrowhawks or cuckoos; this implies that the cuckoo's hawklike appearance functions as protective mimicry, whether to reduce attacks by hawks or to make brood parasitism easier.

The common cuckoo is an obligate brood parasite; it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. At the appropriate moment, the hen cuckoo flies down to the host's nest, pushes one egg out of the nest, lays an egg and flies off. The whole process takes about 10 seconds. A female may visit up to 50 nests during a breeding season. Common cuckoos first breed at the age of two years.

More than 100 host species have been recorded: meadow pipit, dunnock and Eurasian reed warbler are the most common hosts in northern Europe; garden warbler, meadow pipit, pied wagtail and European robin in central Europe; brambling and common redstart in Finland; and great reed warbler in Hungary.

Studies were made of 90 great reed warbler nests in central Hungary. There was an "unusually high" frequency of common cuckoo parasitism, with 64% of the nests parasitised. Of the nests targeted by cuckoos, 64% contained one cuckoo egg, 23% had two, 10% had three and 3% had four common cuckoo eggs. In total, 58% of the common cuckoo eggs were laid in nests that were multiply parasitised. When laying eggs in nests already parasitised, the female cuckoos removed one egg at random, showing no discrimination between the great reed warbler eggs and those of other cuckoos.

It was found that nests close to cuckoo perches were most vulnerable: multiple parasitised nests were closest to the vantage points, and unparasitised nests were farthest away. Nearly all the nests "in close vicinity" to the vantage points were parasitised. More visible nests were more likely to be selected by the common cuckoos. Female cuckoos use their vantage points to watch for potential hosts and find it easier to locate the more visible nests while they are egg-laying.

Irlanda - Enniskerry - Jardines Powerscourt

ENGLISH:

Powerscourt Estate, located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland, is a large country estate which is noted for its house and landscaped gardens, today occupying 19 hectares (47 acres). The house, originally a 13th-century castle, was extensively altered during the 18th century by German architect Richard Cassels, starting in 1731 and finishing in 1741. A fire in 1974 left the house lying as a shell until it was renovated in 1996.

Originally the family seat of the Viscounts Powerscourt, the estate has been owned by the Slazenger family, founders and former owners of the Slazenger sporting goods business, since 1961. It is a popular tourist attraction, and includes Powerscourt Golf Club, an Avoca Handweavers restaurant, and an Autograph Collection Hotel.

Powerscourt House es una mansión situada en Enniskerry, Irlanda. El edificio es obra del arquitecto Richard Cassels y fue encargado por Richard Wingfield, Vizconde de Powerscourt. Se inicia la construcción en 1731 en el lugar en el que existía un castillo normando.

During my last trip to Havana, I was able to hook up with a well known and very talented Cuban photographer who managed to set up a ballerina shoot for me in an old colonial house. Just as I expected, it was a very fabulous experience which I will most certainly include in future trips with clients. Havana is full of amazing architecture, allowing for perfect backdrops for photo shoots.

Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery was dedicated in 1999 as the 117th national cemetery within the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration. When fully developed, this 982-acre cemetery will provide 400,000 burial spaces. I believe it currently holds over 20,000 gravestones from Veterans of military service. It holds remains from service men and woman in all branches and from the Civil War through those from the Iraq War. Elwood, IL
