Saturday Self Challenge

This week in SSC:

Take a photo through a hole or opening. Include part of what you are shooting through. Please, no windows since we have already done that recently.

Post-process as much as you like.

I’ve had a terrible time getting Marmite when we’ve been outside the UK. The Australians have Vegemite (not the same) and some places have Bovril (not the same). In Europe I’ve only seen it in specialist shops, and not at all in the US, so whenever we travel, even in the UK, a jar goes in the luggage.

For those of you unfamiliar with the black sticky spread it’s one of those things you either love or hate, and that is how the company who produce it market it. There’s even a gene test you can take to determine whether you’re a lover or a hater.

If you love it, like me, there is nothing better than Marmite spread on hot buttered toast. Most people spread it quite thin, I don’t, it goes on thick, or gets eaten out of the jar with a spoon.

The idea of photographing the jar though a hole in the toast came to me when I was wondering what I could do differently for this weeks challenge. The set up was a bit of a problem, I soon discovered toast doesn’t balance too well on its crust on its own, so there are a couple of pieces of metal keeping it upright. The other issue was the backdrop, I fastened a black cloth to the wall with a couple of press pins, this proved to be a cat magnet and was pulled off several times between and during shots. The toast took it upon itself to fall over too in a pile of crumbs several times during the shoot too, I’m just glad I didn’t butter it or things could have been much worse.

Perseverance paid off and this is the end result.

One of Australia’s most striking animals, the koala or inaccurately ‘koala bear’ (Phascolarctos cinereus), is bear-like in appearance, but in fact a tree-dwelling marsupial, related to kangaroos and wombats.

The Koala has many nicknames, include bangaroo, New Holland sloth, cullawine, and koolawong.

The fur is silver grey to light brown, being lighter and shorter in the warmer north of its range, where the koala is also smaller. An adult male koala can weigh 8 to 14 kg and a female 5 to 11 kg, the body length is 60 to 85 cm. Koalas have sharp claws which help them climb trees and large noses that are coloured pink or black.

Koalas live in the eucalyptus woodlands and forests of eastern and south-eastern Australia and range from northern Queensland to southwestern Victoria. They have been introduced in western Australia and nearby islands.

Koalas are nocturnal marsupials famous for spending most of their lives asleep in trees. During the day they doze, tucked into forks or nooks in the trees, sleeping for up to 20 hours. When not asleep a koala feeds on eucalyptus leaves, especially at night. Koalas do not drink much water and they get most of their moisture from these leaves. In Aborigine language, the word ‘koala’ means ‘no water’.

De koala of buidelbeer (Phascolarctos cinereus) is een buideldier uit de familie koala's (Phascolarctidae) die voorkomt in het oosten van Australië. De koala is geen beer, maar een buideldier, nauw verwant aan de kangoeroes. Vandaar ook de bijnaam: Bangaroo.

De naam "Koala" komt uit een uitgestorven aboriginaltaal die rond Sydney werd gesproken. Het zou zoiets betekenen als "drinkt niet", verwijzend naar het feit dat de koala zelden drinkt.

Het mannetje weegt zo'n 12 kg, het vrouwtje 8 kg. Ze worden ongeveer 60 à 85 cm lang. In het noordelijke verspreidingsgebied wegen koala's bijna de helft minder. Zuidelijke koala's hebben een dikkere vacht dan die in het warmere noorden. De kleuren van de vachten variëren sterk per individu en worden lichter naarmate koala's ouder worden, maar de meeste zijn grijs met wit op de kin, borst, voorpoten en romp. Koala's hebben een korte staart, die geen functie lijkt te hebben.

Koala's komen voor in de eucalyptusbossen van de vier oostelijke deelstaten van Australië, Queensland, Nieuw-Zuid-Wales, Victoria en Zuid-Australië.

Koala's eten bijna uitsluitend bladeren van de eucalyptusboom. De bladeren zijn vezelrijk en bevatten gif dat voor de meeste andere dieren gevaarlijk is. Ze drinken bijna niet. Vocht wordt uit het voedsel gehaald. Omdat koala's een langzaam vertering hebben, slapen koala's zo'n 20 uur per etmaal, vaak in een boom.

Shin – Yas next chapter will include a short animation. I'm drawing and coloring while my boy is helping me with the animation part since I don't have the time. I've never done anything like this, so it's a new world to me, and we are learning on the run, maybe that's why we are taking this much to upload the next chapter, but you can't imagine the amount of work that generates a single animated scene. ^_^u In any case we are giving our best to make it look half decent :D This is a preview of the inicial drafts ^__^

Nunca había hecho algo parecido por lo que es un mundo nuevo para mi y estamos aprendiendo sobre la marcha, por eso estamos tardando más en colgar el siguiente capitulo de estos dos, no os podéis imaginar la cantidad de faena que hay que hacer para animar una sola escena. ^_^u Pero nos estamos esforzando mucho para que quede medio decente. :D Este es un preview de los bocetos iniciales. ^__^

Foregrounding Métis history and aesthetic practices, this painting includes around150,000 to 250,000 bead-like dots and blends Belcourt’s knowledge of beadwork traditions with her expertise in medicinal plants. Various plants are represented, as well as insects, raindrops, dew and birds. The patterns have been adapted from nature, with several inspired by traditional Métis floral beadwork. A visual ode to water, the work recognizes the life that water brings to everything and everyone.
