Waiting to go through the final checkpoint on day 4 - the race to the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu! This was taken at 3.30 a.m. with the checkpoint opening at 5.30!
The first switchback! this was right after the suspension bridge and was actually enough to get me out of breath because of the high altitude. Not a good omen for all of the much harder switchbacks we would face over the next 4 days!!
Inca Trail Day 1
This part of the trail winds higher up through the jungle. Here the Inca Steps begin - lots, and lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of Inca Steps. Did I mention there were lots of steps? This part was difficult but not impossible - the altitude was a problem but it wasn't quite high enough to feel like someone was sitting on my lungs. That came later.
