On our way to the Inca Trail head, the road was washed out a bit and it needed to be repaired. This was the first attempt at repairing it; wood over the hole.

Val is holding trekking pole. The handle is handmade of alpaca wool. I never appreciated using trekking poles, but some people claim they are good for knees. In my experience, they are just extra exercise for hands.

Probably it's time to explain that common opinion about what the word Inca means is wrong. Inca was not the name of the people lived here. There name was Quechua. Inca means King in Quechua. Thus Camino Inca means The Kings Way. The steps as seen on the picture are worthy The King.

They're referred to as the "red army" for obvious reason. Or "senioritas rojas" as our tour guide greeted them on the way to the trail.
