Walking through the Sun Gate on the Inca Trail, Peru, December 2011

Lens: Canon EF 24mm f/2.8

You can take a train to Machu Picchu (that's how we got back) or arrive by foot on a number of different routes built around old Inca roads.

This is the train that conveys folks from Cusco to Agua Calliente, the last stop before the necesary bus onto Machu Picchu ruins.

Hiking the Inca Trail

I'd brought a can of Easy Cheese, small log of salami, and cylinder of Ritz crackers (which were mostly crushed at this point) for a special occasion. Phuyupatamarca (The Place Among the Clouds) seemed like a perfect occasion. The food reminded me of home. We always eat cheese, crackers and salami on our family hikes.

Awesome paving stones on the Inca trail section of the trek. The entire 3 day trek is along an old Inca trail, but much of the original stone work has deteriorated or been destroyed by recent road building and campesinos herding their cattle and horse trains through the area. Saraguro to Yacuambi trek.

View of ruins of Llactapata taken from area of our first campsite.

Looking at Machu Picchu fromt the sun gate. Inca Trail Day 4.

I waited Val and Guido on this wide saddle. The trail split short after this place. Guido and porters took shorter branch, Val and I took longer path to walk through mysterious Intipata.
