Choquequirao (Quechua: Choqek'iraw) is a partly excavated ruined city of the Inca in the south of Peru. It bears a striking similarity in structure and architecture to Machu Picchu and is referred to as its 'sister'. Choquequirao admits far fewer tourists than its sister but the ruin is no less delightful and is a good alternative to the overcrowded Machu Picchu.

The ruins at Choquequirao are comprised of buildings and terraces at different levels from the lower level Sunch'u Pata to the truncated hill top. The hill top has been leveled and ringed with stones to form a platform of 30x50 meters wide.

The Inca Trail is the most famous hike in South America. Although the total distance is only about 39 km, the ancient trail laid by the Incas from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu winds its way up and down and around the mountains, snaking over three high Andean passes en route, which has collectively led to the route being dubbed‚ "The Inca Trail". The views of snowy mountain peaks, distant rivers, ranges, and cloud forests flush with orchids are stupendous‚ and walking from one cliff-hugging pre-Columbian ruin to the next is a mystical and unforgettable experience.

Why invest up to four days trekking on steep paths to reach the old citadel of Machu Picchu, if there is a railroad that can take you there in comfort in only six hours? Only the experience itself can supply the answer. Inca Trail
