The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru is considered overcrowded, and hiking permits are limited. Due to its popularity, the Peruvian government, together with UNESCO, has limited the number of permitted hikers on the Inca Trail to 500 people per day in order to protect this heritage of humanity. But fortunately, there are other ways to the famous ruined city in the Andes.

Next to the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek is the most popular Inca trail in the Sacred Valley. Just like the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek leads past massive, snow-capped mountain peaks to tropical mountain cloud forest. The hike is in no way inferior to the Inca Trail, is -so far- much less well-known and hardly deserves to come second among the top trekking routes in Peru. On the way you circle the impressive mountain Salkantay (6271m), which is called "wild mountain" in Quechua. Especially on the first and second day, the strenuous stages are high. After passing the Humantay Lagoon on the first day, the following day the Salkantay Pass is crossed, from then on a long descent follows. If you want, you can choose an alternative route on the third day from Chaullay, which means you'll be on the road for a total of five days instead of four. On the Peru active trip, you can even combine the Salkantay Trek through the Andes with trekking in the Colca Canyon and a multi-day jungle adventure!

Alternatives to the Inca Trail: Since the Inca Trail is usually fully booked six months in advance, there are two more multi-day treks in the program that eventually reach Machu Picchu: The Salkantay Trek and Lares trek.

Hiked the Inca Trail for 4 days with Aventours, after a day tour of the Sacred Valley. Highly recommended! Very tough, but incredible.

This is Camp km 82, Aventours own camp. Beautiful little spot. This is the pit where they made pachamanca for us!

The Inca apparently practiced a sophisticated form of agriculture, using not only the lowlands but also terraces they cut into the sides of mountains. Taken above the Vilcanota/Urubamba river valley in Peru

A street in Cusco with an Inca Wall casually propping up the side of a house. We saw this everywhere - in one restaurant, the whole inside supporting wall was Inca built - over time the population of Cusco has just built around them. They are so wonderfully built solid structures it would be a foolish person to try to demolish them just on practical grounds let alone any notion of historic preservation!

www.sapadventures.net/ The Inca Trail is a magnificent, well preserved Inca Trail route which connects Machu Picchu with what once were other regions of the Inca Empire, and today it is one of the world’s most popular treks. This four-day walk goes from the highlands of 4,200mts and down through the cloud forests to finally arrive at Machu Picchu - 2,380mts.

Inca Trail Description:

Visitors come from all parts of the world to Peru, not only to see Machu Picchu but to walk the Inca Trail, the most famous hike in South America. They come to see the ruins and the scenery which makes this trail so famous. The total distance of the Inca trail is approximately 43 kilometres, departing from the place known as Kilometre 88. To begin the trip, one crosses the narrow bridge at Kusicancha, and afterwards heads towards the left hand side of a forest of Eucalyptus trees. Camping on this night is either in Wayllabamba or Llullucha. The second day is more difficult, as you have to climb to 4200 metres at the Pass of Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman’s pass). The third day is the longest, but also the most interesting for many people as you can visit impressive ruins like Runkuracay and Sayaqmarca. Camping is either in Phuyupatamarca or Wiñayhuayna. On the final day many groups leave early to see the sun rise over Machu Picchu from the Inti Punku (sun gate). The remainder of the day is spent exploring this fabulous ancient city.
