Inca Dove
Columbina inca
While my wife was trying to get more shots of the Kiskadee, I decided to wander a bit. I was just coming into the more more wooded areas around the Inn when I flushed this little dove to a branch. I had to use flash inside the shadowy area, but it wasn't too bad.
These doves are fairly small - just a little bigger than a bluebird (but fatter, of course). Their 'scaled' look is pretty unique, and when they fly they have a brilliant orange color. We were never lucky enough to get a shot of that, though.

The Inca Trail l starts from a point in the Sacred Valley, called "Kilometer 82". To begin the journey, you cross a narrow bridge in Kusicancha, and then you head towards the left side of a eucalyptus forest. This trip is not suitable for cardiac people as it passes over 4,600 meters above sea level, the road winds up, down and around the mountains on the ancient carved stone stairs, and then continues through three high Andean mountain passes , one of them with a disturbing name, "Dead Woman's Pass."
Near Chivay, Peru. On the way to Colca Canyon. If you look closely almost every surface has been terraced. You can also see the irregation tracks that were cut into the surface of the mountains to bring water from the mountain to the fields. The scale of it amazed me. All I could think is that at some stage in the far distant past some Inca or other turned to another and said "Hey...I've an idea. Let's build a terrace..." See large

One day we wandered into the Mercado central de San Pedro in Cuzco - a huge semi-open bustling local marketplace where the signs are in Quechua, Spanish and English, and you can find fresh ceviche, fruit juices, herbal teas, coca, meat butchers, and hundreds of different kinds of beans and grains, cultivated by the Incas to thrive in high altitudes.
