Daily Photo - The Raised Bones of Arlington National Cemetery
My friend John P from One Man's Blog suggested that I visit this place while I am on my little trip to DC. It was already on my list, but he bumped it up! I went there to shoot at sunset, and got back to the hotel in enough time to process.
To be honest, it's quite difficult to make 365 images per year that pass my quality standards! Really! Maybe it looks easy or something... but I assure you it is not! Hehe...
Anyway, it was just my young son and I wandering around the cemetery for a few hours as the sun was going down on a dreary and rainy day here in Washington, D.C. Arlington National Cemetery is considered hallowed grounds around here, and it was a life-changing experience for my son.
After a long walk in a nearly empty cemetery, we made our way to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The entire facility was closing, and the guard told us it was time to leave. I talked to him for a moment, and he let my son and I through. We went to the steps of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and sat there for a long time. We were totally alone except for the solitary Honor Guard who was guarding the tomb. There was a light rain and not much day remaining. The Honor Guard walked towards one end of the path, clicked his heels, checked his gun, stood guard, then strode back and forth along his short route. It was completely amazing to be there alone in the rain... just watching this happen again and again.

Now with recent progress, and commentary on Tom's mental sate during the inbox zeroing process.
Red comments are negative, green comments broadly hopeful, and aqua comments neutral.
Dark blue comments are meta commentary on the process, and did not contain progress information.
For our daily challenge on paper, I selected a close-up of the papers sitting on my in-tray. It is also for 112 pictures in 2012, #104, edge(s).
I took this picture in the fall of 1998 in Logan, Utah.

We came across this little cluster of Puffballs on September 3rd, when we spent the day botanizing at Bragg Creek Natural Area, west of the city. I always think Puffballs are such amazing things, with their beautifully textured surface.
There has to be some sort of incompatability between my computer and my friend's in England. Two days ago, I started getting the same (?) problem with my Inbox - two or three e-mails from England would not stop repeatedly sending. Had to just sit there and delete and delete - and watch another batch arrive. To say the least, this is not what I needed - and now I still feel completely drained and exhausted. All is OK (for now!).
Which then, of course, turns my thoughts to wondering how on earth are the Japanese people dealing with all that has destroyed their lives? They are strong people and will overcome all this, but my heart and my prayers are with them each and every day.

It's amazing how many memories can be crammed into such a small box. Mostly bits from my past, or carboot sale finds. This is the inside of the writing box in my previous photo...this compartment revealed by lifting the velvet writing slope.
Some things that stand out for me:
* Knitted boy! Bought at my primary school Christmas Fair circa 1986. BS=Bourne School.
* Painted eggs. The plan was to paint one every year at Easter, but have fallen behind!
* Blue button. Surprisingly emotive, as used to be on Mum's coat.
* Gold 'key' for extremely strong rice liquor brought back from China by my brother 'in-law'. It comes in rather an attractive sealed ceramic bottle which took us at least half an hour to figure out how to open.
* Napkin ring bearing the initials D.M.P. This is Doris Maud Pow (wow, how about that for a Vintage Name!!), my great-aunt, who I never met as she died in the 1920s from a severe asthma attack, aged 21.
* Fragment of blue decorative Bakelite, found on the street, Chiswick.
Just spotted the unintentional but delightful "pow-wow-how" above....hehe (doesn't take much to amuse me!!)
Given to Sean as a joke birthday present.
Also: I kid you not: The rules are printed on the back of the box, so as to save paper.

BACKSTORY: Got up around 8:20AM, made it out driving by 8:53 and went out until 12:12 PM for a total of 3 hours, 19 minutes. Spent $38.75 plus ~$5.53 gas for 37.7 miles of driving (18.7 mpg @ $2.74/G), for a total cost of $44.28.
We drove to only 13 yard sales±, stopping at only 4 (31%) of them. We made 9 purchases (9 items) for a total estimated value of $147.38, leading to a profit/savings of $103.10. So in essence, we multiplied our $47.38 investment by 3.33X.
(Also, if you think about it, the profit counts for even more when you consider that we have to earn $~117 on the job, pre-tax, in order to take home the $103.10 in cash that we saved. How long does $117 of disposable income take to earn, vs the 3.3 hrs we spent here?)
Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $31.08/hr as a couple or $15.54/hr per person. This is kind of low for a ±yardsale± outing.
