Done months before I had even heard of Dave Gray or the idea of visual language.

The might be some problems with the way I parse the ideas, but it gives interesting insight (for me, anyway) into where my thinking seems to be headed.

Part of an art book I made for myself. Left page of third spread. Red text: "Don't sit around with folded hands." It is about being a spectator instead of a participant in life.

Color photograph showing a scene from the one-day interfaith Holocaust awareness conference themed "Christians and Jews: Inaction or In Action," held at the First Baptist Church, Salem, Mass. in November 1985, and co-sponsored by the Church and the Holocaust Center of the North Shore Jewish Federation.

In this scene, Rev. Aram Marashlian is working on a film projector; the morning segment of the conference featured a viewing of "The Yellow Star," relating the history of the Holocaust through paintings by victims and survivors.

The photo was printed in November 1985 according to its back, and the event was reported by the "Suburban News" on Nov. 23, the "Jewish Journal" on November 21, and the Lynn "Item" on November 8, 1985.

Harriet Wacks is visible standing at center. Rev. Marashlian is pictured at the projector in view. Israella Abram (chairman of the Holocaust Center) is pictured at left in background.

DOWN WITH THE POLITICS OF HATE AND FEAR OFTHE SANGH GIROH!! .

.

UNITE TO ENSURE JUSTICE TO RIOT VICTIMSII .

.

The recent verdict against the perpetrators who gang raped Bilkis Bano and butchered 14 of her family members during the Gujarat riots of 2002 has been the culmination of a long and difficult struggle for justice to the victims of this state sponsored pogrom. Five month pregnant Bilkis and her family were chased by two jeeploads of men from Randhikpur village in Dahod District during the Gujarat riots on March 3, 2002. Her baby daughter was killed along with 8 others of her family members. Six people went missing and were never to be located. 11 accused in the case were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court in Mumbai after six years of delay, while 7 others were acquitted. However, the court has also been silent on the doctors and policemen who connived with the rioters even though head constable Sombai Gori of the Limkheda police station has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment for framing false records and refusing to lodge Bilkis Bano's first complaint. It has been the unflinching struggle by Ms. Bano to obtain justice that has ultimately led to the verdict. .

In fact, the case was shifted out of Gujarat to Mumbai on the orders of the Supreme Court after reports of threats and intimidations to the witnesses. .

However, the remarks by the special judge U.D.Salvi that this case couldn't be categorized as the 'rarest of the rare cases' is also not convincing. The State-sponsored pogrom in Gujarat under the supervision of Narendra Modi had seen butchering of hundreds of innocent Muslims, gang-rape of women, and looting of their homes and commercial establishments. The gruesome nature of the pogrom is best illustrated in the way in which the riot squads ripped open the wombs and threw the fetuses into fire. .

Over the last few months, especially after the Gujarat elections, the RSS-BJP have rejuvenated their Hindutva agenda. The attempt to transplant the 'Gujarat model' has seen large-scale violence against the Christians in Kandamal District of Orissa during Christmas as well as the attack targetting a health camp in Chattisgarh. This strategy of the Sangh Giroh builds a fear psychosis among the minorities and often leads to further ghettoisation. Even the media has not been spared by these communal forces who vented their ire on the NDlV office in Ahmedabad for including painter M.F. Hussain in its ongoing SMS poll for the choice for Bharat Ratna. .

While the verdict in the Bilkis Bano case is really welcoming, there are numerous other cases that still seek justice. In Gujarat, the Narendra Modi Government is yet to pay any attention to address the issues of relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the riots. The Sri Krishna Commission report on the Mumbai riots of 1992-93 is still gathering dust, with no effort whatsoever on the part of the Maharashtra government to punish the guilty, which include the Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. Such inaction only emboldens the communal forces to carry forward their politics of hate. The communal politics of the RSS-BJP is aimed at polarizing people on religious lines, and thus to gain political dividends. Only a spirited and united struggle by the Left, Secular and democratic forces can ensure that these divisive forces are handed down a thorough defeat. SFI appeals the student community to see through this communal gameplan of the Sangh Giroh and unite to resist these forces tooth and nail. .
