Beth Hart - Setting Me Free

Why do we block the path that leads to the treasures we possess? What force makes us so afraid of inaction? It's the door, just the door that's heavy to push. It is strange that our nature possesses both the possibility of awakening and the fear of surrendering to it.

Love is the only way

ABOUT THIS PHOTO:

Partly out of fear to bore the Flickr community with too many lizard photos, I thought it would make for a nice change - yet in keeping with the main theme of my gallery - to give interested nature and reptile fans the opportunity to get a sense of the lacerta bilineata habitat where I photographed all the animals on this page.

So this is the second of a (as yet planned) series of pictures (if people like them there will be more) that will show you where all the reptile "action" took place: my garden in the beautiful community of Monteggio in the Malcantone region of the Ticino, Switzerland.

The pictures were taken over a period of over a decade, so there were obviously some changes in the garden during that time, but If you focus on the palm tree - which has grown considerably over the years but is visible in all the photos I plan to upload - you get a sense of the geography of the place.

In summer, which is when this photo was taken, the micro-climate in this particular area of the Ticino can be almost tropical in the sense that it's hot and very humid with frequent thunderstorms and heavy rain, and I often refer to my garden (half-)jokingly as my "little Swiss rainforest". I guess you can see how animals - particularly lacerta bilineata and other lizards - would feel at home in this "tropical paradise" of mine :-)

Apparently - as I learned in the comments here on Flickr - the occurrence of this particular lizard species is a very good indicator that an ecosystem is intact, and my family and I always took great care not to interfere too much in our garden and let nature roam as free as possible.

In return, over the years we were rewarded for this "calculated inaction" with a wide variety of species of plants, insects, lizards and snakes visiting - or by now residing permanently in - our little nature refuge, some of which I managed to capture on camera.

As mentioned before, if people like these photos or are interested in other flora and fauna from my private jungle, I'll upload one every once in a while between lizards, so let me know in the comments if you're interested in seeing more of these or if I should stick to just reptiles ;-)

As always, thank you so much for your interest and feedback, stay safe - and have a great week everyone!

Not a cloud in the sky

until you look up.

They said it wasn’t going to rain today.

It was only a 15% chance.

But you cannot negotiate with the weather.

Clouds are worse than politicians

when it comes to inaction and

even more dangerous: action.

Those urban clouds are laughing at us

for trusting in the forecast in 2021

And thinking they would mind if

we felt let down

by their choices.

We are drenched in reality.

It can’t stop won’t stop.

The wetness won’t be wrung out.

The rain isn’t ending any time soon.

At the beginning of Oct, there are far fewer nectar producing flowers to choose from, so was happy to see the bees utilizing the flowers that were still left in my flower garden.

"It's OK to Not be OK" is the new saying

Like, yesterday’s “Just do it!"

Now, it’s a way of accepting

when you have too much energy in your body

to sleep or to eat or to love or to learn

or when you just feel like you are

not enough yet too much

simultaneously.

Listen, people say it’s ok to not be ok

and they walk by you with your arms flailing

every day

and they think “Who is this crazy…?"

and you know it...

It’s just not right.

It doesn’t feel OK to not be ok.

It’s just a catchy slogan that means nothing

If you’re a misfit or even just a little bit extra

then you’ll be avoided, shunned, judged.

So, I’m going to just say it...

It is not ok to be ok.

You heard me...

don’t walk or run away!

We have let the billionaires win.

The environmental consequences of our

collective actions and inactions

will surely kill us and/or our children.

And, our elected officials are still

carrying on their same old parade.

As if we’re celebrating an unknown holiday.

You should be screaming.

You should be shaking all through the night.

Your teeth should be demanding a mouth guard.

Your hair should be falling out.

What has humanity done?

What are we capable of?

We’ve locked children in cages.

We’ve controlled women’s bodies.

We’ve bombed innocent countries.

And we’re still in the middle of a deadly pandemic

After almost two years.

How it even possible that anyone could still be OK?

And those night terrors keep coming.

The Raven and the Wolf

Tbilisi is again gripped by protests - this time Rustaveli Avenue was occupied by representatives of the opposition, non-governmental organizations and journalists who accuse the authorities

The death of Georgian journalist Lekso Lashkarava, who died a few days after he was beaten during the filming of an anti-LGBT contract, shocked Georgia.

The top officials expressed official condolences and promised an objective investigation, and the opposition accused the authorities of inaction on July 5, when the city was engulfed in riots and more than 50 media representatives were injured.

The opposition and civil society activists announced rallies demanding the resignation of the government at the parliament building.

Happy Sunday

Saltash (Cornish: Essa) is a town in the south east of Cornwall, facing Plymouth over the River Tamar and is known as "the gateway to Cornwall". As the Tamar is met by her sister river, the Tavy, the estuary widens considerably to become the stretch of water known as the Hamoaze.

Although Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge has been carrying trains over the river from Cornwall into Plymouth since 1859, it wasn't until a century after this that work began to build the Tamar Bridge, which would carry road traffic across the river alongside the railway bridge.

The two neighbouring councils formed a 'special partnership' in 1950 to lobby the national government to fund a fixed crossing of the Tamar, but in the face of government inaction, decided in 1955 to go forward with the scheme themselves as a local enterprise financed from tolls.

When work finally commenced on the Tamar Bridge in 1959, it was the United Kingdom's longest suspension bridge at the time, measuring a total of 642 metres in length. It had three lanes, catered for a vehicle weight of 24 tonnes, and could cope with 20,000 vehicle crossings each day.

Between 1998 and 2001 the Bridge underwent a major revitalisation when it was both strengthened and widened. The work was undertaken while the crossing was open to traffic, ensuring adequate load carrying capacity for the future, and also adding an additional traffic lane and a dedicated pedestrian and cycle lane.

Then again in 2006, the tolling function was upgraded with a major refurbishment of the toll plaza, including a new canopy, and the introduction of electronic toll collection.

The bridge is now carrying over 16 million vehicles a year – over ten times that carried in the early years, and on a busy weekday over 50,000 vehicles use the crossing.

The Tamar bridge is in public ownership, owned and operated jointly by Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Councils and managed by Tamar Crossings, who also run the Torpoint Ferries. It was officially opened to road traffic on 24th October 1961. Various events are planned for the coming week to mark its 60th birthday.

The original complaints were about the unfairness of only choosing photos from a relatively small handful of people who worked very hard to achieve success.

Now the donkey chooses photos with very few views, comments and faves. Good luck to the chosen ones! I'm happy for their success. But the current system is no fairer than the previous one.

Censorship is wrong and should be opposed.

It strikes me that flickr's current policy of encouraging people NOT to comment or fave is commercial suicide - surely the whole point of this organisation is to encourage interaction, not inaction.

In these difficult times it is often hard to see the way ahead but one can always dream about what might be or could be and then make a plan to make it real. To use some cliches, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel means the sky is the limit. The future can be bright and a time of change or of inaction can fuel new directions with a little bit of imagination. Carpe diem as they say.

I wonder who will see him first?

I very nearly talked myself out of attending this carnival. In the end, it wasn't so much a strong desire that brought me here. Rather it was a premonition of how bad I would feel the next day if I had blown it off. Truly a case of motivation as a result of negative consequences. Over the years I've learned that the outcome of events such as this are unpredictable. But there is the absolute certainty of failure through inaction. The carousel of life gives you only one ride; best to make every moment count.

My ambivalence with carnivals stems from the fact that they make me sad. I walk through the venue surrounded by people having fun, yet everything I see creates a sense of melancholy. I'm detached at the surface level, but deeply engaged in the visuals. The camera is able to frame my feelings into something tangible. Here the chair riders are cast into a blur as if being spun around a luminous water fountain. Simultaneously magical and utterly forlorn.
