Made in Scotland from girders … not quite, but a sculpture of Big Yin Billy Connolly has been created in metalwork to signal the completion of the first phase of a landmark McBains Cooper project-managed residential housing project in his home town of Anderston, Glasgow.
The sculpture, made from steel bars by renowned north-of-the-border artist Andy Scott, is hung high on an elevation of the first phase to be completed.
And while Glasgow’s most famous son couldn’t make it to the unveiling of a ground level commemorative plaque marking the occasion, a big crowd of locals and media did.
Property and construction consultancy McBains Cooper are project managers on the five phase residential rebuild of Anderston, working with client Sanctuary Housing, and the sculpture of Billy Connolly is high up on the elevation overlooking Glasgow.
Such was the attention to detail during the project as a whole that the team even designed one apartment specifically for the needs of one family, and the gratitude and delight of the residents at that sort of effort - plus the overall finished product – has been clearly signalled by how well kept the whole area is.
“We occasionally get celebrities turning up at launches and openings, but it’ll be nice to drive past the sculpture of the Big Yin every day and be reminded that we played a part in putting Anderston back on the map – after Billy Connolly did it first time round,” said Alan Hannah of McBains Cooper.
The project involves the demolition of a number of 1960s housing blocks in the Glasgow suburb, but has proven to be a massive logistical challenge for the McBains Cooper and Sanctuary teams.
“The key issues here are that the work is going on in amongst a number of schools and nurseries, while also being surrounded by occupied homes – so not only have the logistics of getting into the sites been taxing the grey matter, there has also been the issue of moving families out and into nearby accommodation, and then into the completed Phase One apartment complex,” said Alan Hannah.
“But we know we’ve got it right, firstly because the local residents were surveyed and asked what they wanted and needed in the area – a target we delivered against – but secondly because you don’t have to go far through the area to see how well-kept and looked-after the communal areas are.
“This is one of those incredibly complex but equally incredibly satisfying projects that’s clearly making a vast difference to life in Anderston. And with the Big Yin looking down on us, we wouldn’t dare get it wrong.”

Children's playground in Humlegården, a public park on the grounds around the Royal Library.
Humlegården was originally the Royal Fruit Garden, established by King Johan III in the 16th century. The name humle, meaning hop, indicates that hops were one of the major plants grown in the garden.
Already in the 17th century, parts of the park were opened to the public. In 1764, the park was opened for public recreation. There were, however, restrictions on who was allowed to be admitted.
The park was completely opened to the public in 1869. Today the park is a popular recreational area for locals, hosting a small soccer ground, skateboard ramp, children's playground and lawns.

Today we got our new living room floor outlets roughed in, plus they moved 3 wall outlets off an overloaded circuit and onto the new circuit, and moved the wires for all the room wall outlets up to the new locations (I'll install the actual wall outlets). Next is the concrete, and I talked to 3 contractors about that today.

The Rudolphinum (Czech Rudolfinum) is a neo-Renaissance concert and gallery building on the right bank of the river Vltava in Prague's Old Town (Staré Město).
The outstanding building of light sandstone was built by the two architects Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz in the years 1876-1884, commissioned by the Czech savings banks. The rounded facade design was inspired by that of the Dresden Semperoper. The patron was Crown Prince Rudolf. The building was named after him and his art-loving ancestor, Emperor Rudolf II. From the beginning on, it was designed as a house of artists (Dům umělců) and should serve the care of music and the fine arts.
In the newly founded Czechoslovakia, the house was redesigned as a House of Representatives in 1920. It was not until the German occupation of the Nazis in March 1939 that the building was brought back to its original purpose. Initially, so the people of Prague say, only Czech workers were working here, who consciously instead of the statue of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy those of Richard Wagner removed. After this "error" broke, the dismantlement was continued by German workers. According to current knowledge, however, this anecdote was taken from the novel Mendelssohn on the roof of Jiří Weil and never happened in reality as there was never a statue of Wagner. After the Second World War the Czech Parliament resided once again in the house. Since 1946, however, the building once again serves as a concert and exhibition center. It also houses various concert halls. Its largest, the so-called Dvořák Hall, is the home of the most important classical Prague orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic. There also take place important concerts of the Prague Spring Music Festival.
Additionally, there is also a major state art gallery, the Rudolfinum Gallery, in the building complex. Whose focus is mainly on exhibitions of contemporary visual art and, to a lesser extent, on the so-called classic modern art. Important exhibitions included: František Drtikol - Photographer, Painter, Mystic (1998), Cindy Sherman: Retrospective (1998), Jürgen Klauke: Side Effect (1998), Czech Photography 1840-1950 (2004), Annelies Štrba Neo Rauch: New Roles (2007), Uncertain States of America (2007-2008), Gottfried Helnwein: Angels Sleeping (2008).
Wichtige Ausstellungen waren unter anderem: František Drtikol – Photographer, Painter, Mystic (1998), Cindy Sherman: Retrospective (1998), Jürgen Klauke: Side Effect (1998), Czech Photography 1840–1950 (2004), Annelies Štrba (2005), Neo Rauch: Neue Rollen (2007), Uncertain States of America (2007–2008), Gottfried Helnwein: Angels Sleeping (2008).
it was my birthday last week and in a mexican standoff of surprise weekend get-aways Laura countered her weekend in Lisbon by taking me to Venice...If you go in winter, take a beanie!
This was taken in our hotel, the mask is synomonous with the mystery and tradition of Venice and of course a reminder of the approaching Carnival..

Back at 'Ian Bryce Print' in Rotorua, New Zealand mid 2001 I worked with the most racist bloke I ever came across , he used to openly call all the local Maori's 'Niggers' frequently in work, even in front of a gargantuan mullet haired Maori called Max (he reminded me of Chief from 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' but only bigger. One day Max picked up Tom Whelan (like one would pick up a baby in his arms) and dropped him onto his knee in a wrestling style move, Tom's back arched and he writhed around on the floor in the office like a dying fly crying like a boy. It was very funny, especially as Tom was about 50 and Max about 40. Curiouser still Tom Whelan was married to a 29 year old illiterate Maori lady. Racism was Tom's way of shedding his hatred in life, he had a lot of bad luck in life and did have a warm and funny side to him aswell which did come out as frequently as his darker side.
