Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.

On the edge of Kingsmere Lake, Mackenzie King spent almost 50 years (1903 – 1950) improving and expanding his estate, which he bequeathed to all Canadians. From the moment we enter this picturesque estate through wooded paths, we can enjoy the beauty of the Mooreside Main House and gardens where he hosted several important statesmen such as Winston Churchill among others. The spirits lead us to King’s historical ruins:

The Window on the Forest

These pillars and the lintel came from the old British North America Bank Note Company in downtown Ottawa, ca. 1875.

Perhaps nothing improves a view like good windows.

They are frames surrounding ever changing paintings.

If we pay attention, the scenes we see from the windows

Improved version of the 500C/M.

Following the design principle of the previous models, the Victor Hasselblad AB made the V-series completely modular: Not only the lenses, but also the winding crank, the viewfinder and the film magazine are exchangeable during normal operation of the camera. With the introduction of the 500C/M, also the focussing screen became easily exchangeable. The 500C/M was also sold as the Hasselblad 500 Classic bundle that included a 80mm lens and A12 film back.

I've been playing in Photoshop with my favorite photo. I tried adding the Orton effect to see how it would look. I thought it would just make it look blurry and crappy. Surprisingly, I loved it. This photo has such a magical, painterly quality, I think the Orton effect really enhances that. People have always thought this photo looks like a painting. They probably think that because, this photo does look like a painting. And... Once again... As I said in my description of the original version. This picture was not majorly Photoshopped. I did some darkening of the sky. Increased contrast in the rocks, and got rid of some people walking around the lighthouse... And... Now I added the Orton effect. If you printed the negative in a darkroom, it would look pretty much like this.

Here's the original.

After missing the first two days of Texans training camp before agreeing to a five-year, $14 million contract Saturday, outside linebacker Brian Cushing is eager to get on the practice field today with his new teammates.

Cushing, the first-round draft choice from Southern California, is getting $10.435 million in guaranteed money to become the starter on the strong side and help improve a defense that ranked 22nd last season, including 23rd against the run.

“I’m just relieved and excited to have this done,” Cushing said. “I’m ready to play football and help the team win.”

Cushing (6-3, 262) was in Los Angeles when agent Tom Condon reached the agreement with general manager Rick Smith and director of football administration Chris Olsen.

Cushing’s contract could be worth a maximum of $18 million over five years.

In the fifth year of his deal, there’s a clause that could earn him an additional $4 million in an escalator bonus.

Odds are that Cushing’s contract will be extended before he enters the fifth season in 2013.

Smith and Olsen will have all eight of their draft choices under contract when the Texans take the field for the third day of two-a-day drills at their Methodist Training Center.

“It’s very important to have him signed,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “Rick and Chris were up at 3 in the morning trying to get it done. They’ve done a good job.

“Brian’s two days behind now, but he didn’t miss anything we did in the offseason program, so that’s a good thing. He wanted to be here while we were working on the contract, but he couldn’t.”

Rookies who have signed with the Texans report a week early for conditioning and meetings before practicing for the first time with the veterans. Cushing wanted to report with the rookies.

He was working out at Reliant Stadium last week when the Texans had to explain league rules that forced him to leave.

Cushing took what turned out to be a quick trip back to Los Angeles. He returned to Houston on Saturday afternoon.

Texans coaches are excited to get him on the practice field.

“We’re going to put the pads on (Sunday morning), and I know he’s chomping at the bit to get out there,” Kubiak said.

After the Texans used the 15th pick in the first round on Cushing, they inserted him into the starting lineup. He impressed his coaches in the organized team activities and minicamp.

“We like his presence on the ball,” Kubiak said, meaning Cushing has a knack for finding the ball and making plays. “He’s playing over the tight end, and we’re going to ask him to do a great deal. We think he can handle it.

“Brian’s very athletic. He’s physical against the run. He can rush the passer. He can drop into coverage. We brought him here for a reason, and we’re going to put him to work real fast.”

Frank Bush, who is in his first season as defensive coordinator, has to make calls that maximize Cushing’s strengths. The faster Cushing learns, the quicker Bush plans to utilize all his talent.

“We’re going to try to take advantage of all his talent,” Bush said. “Because he’s such a talented kid, there are a lot of things we can do with him.”

The coaches say they think Cushing has everything it takes to become a star at his position.

“Brian can turn and run with the tight end,” Bush said. “He’s big and strong enough to strike them at the line of scrimmage and nullify some of their speed down the field, so we’re comfortable with him in coverage.

“His ability also gives us a chance to be aggressive toward the quarterback. He’s a big guy who’s shown he can get there.”

Minor White was a contemporary of Ansel Adams. In addition to being a photographer in his own right, he also taught photography lessons. Some of these lessons would take place at what is now known as "Minor White's Wall", located in the Shore Acres State Park, where he encouraged his students to concentrate on their abilities to visualize and create abstract photos.

OK, it's not a horse. But it reminds me of one. I see the mouth, the nose, and one eye before the shape fades into the background of the surrounding rock.

Lewis Falls, of the Lewis River (Scenic Segment), that pours out of Lewis Lake, is named for Meriwether Lewis, of Lewis & Clark Fame. Very recentlly the Park Service wisely invested in major improvements to the viewing areas and added a short, safe trail to overlooks such as this one. As a result my estimation of this small beauty spot has also improved. Lovely fall colors certainly add to the appeal as well. As always, I recommend viewing full screen if you can.

ET2 and improved ET2M DC electric commuter trains were built by the Torzkovsky carriage plant (Торжокский вагоностроительный завод) located in Torzhok city of Tver region at 1993-2010. ET2 design was in general based on the original project of the ER2 family of trains developed and built in Soviet Latvia by the RVR (Rīgas Vagonbūves Rūpnīca, Riga, Latvia). 26 commuter trains of ET2 model and 109 ones of modernised ET2M were built in the ten-car configuration. After cancelling of trainset production Torzhok wagon-building plant fell into bancrupcy in 2016.

Rework of my 2009 picture Sailing Moonward. This one is much improved visually, and the ship is still sailing moonward. In fact, it hasn't moved since 2009. No wind, I guess even though the sails look full. Maybe the ship is grounded. I'll post a followup in another 12 years....so check back then.

The outlook of Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar Road Bridge from the viewing area car park on the Devon side of the River Tamar has been improved by the lopping of the trees behind the contractors compound, which previously obscured the view. Also, it looks like at long last, the contractors compound is being wound down, and hopefully it, too, will disappear in time. A visit by the chain saw to the bushes on the left would not come amiss, either, but at least, the view of Brunel's masterpiece is again there to be enjoyed. The B-52E was a slightly improved version of the B-52D. The E model was virtually identical to the D in outward appearance. Most of the improvements were to internal systems. A new bomb navigation system and an improved Doppler radar system were the major avionics upgrades.

The first of 100 B-52Es ordered was completed in October 1957. The first flight was on the roll out date, in part, because the E model was so similar to the D, there was no need for an extensive ground test program. Boeing and the USAF also used the concurrent rollout/first flight for public relations purposes.

Initial deployment of the B-52E in late 1957 was to the 6th Bomb Wing stationed at Walker Air Force Base. Improvements in surface-to-air missile technology during the late 1950s made high-level penetration of enemy airspace increasingly dangerous. Because of this threat, B-52 combat tactics began to change from high-level penetration missions to standoff weapons delivery.

The AGM-28 Hound Dog missile was the primary air-to-ground missile used beginning in the late 1950s. Two AGM-28s were carried on wing pylons mounted between the fuselage and inboard engine nacelles. The B-52E remained in operational frontline service until the early 1970s when the last aircraft were phased out in favor of more modern models.

I always like to improve my building techniques, so i tried my hands on a new water technique for my recent build.

In general it's the normal trans tiles + different shades of grey underground -technique, but now flowing.

To get this effect it needs a LOT of tiles and nearly twice as much 1x1 Tiles with clip.

One clip always hold two tiles together.

Using the usual tolerance of the bricks it's possible to bend the plain water into waves.

These are improved 3D renderings with color scheme to give you a better idea of how Palm Springs Al Duniya Salaam Masjid would look and feel. Again the program has severe limitations [No spheres, arches or insets to create optimal detail so what we have here is mainly an improved rough 3D rendering seen from many angles. I built the model off of a site plan that I drew with Bic ball point pens.

Knowing I had a free afternoon today I'd been keeping a close eye on the weather forecast all weekend. Turns out they were right for today - it was glorious. So after teaching I headed straight to Steart to see if I could catch up with the Shorties again - at least 2 seen throughout the afternoon hunting over the saltmarsh.

I got myself hunkered down against a fence post at a corner of a field - and tried to remain below the height of the fence. I know these can be quite confiding at times however I thought I'd maximise my chances by keeping low to the horizon and staying put (I must admit I love the whole business of stalking (no smart remarks thanks) and experimenting with fieldcraft, it completely absorbs me and I'm intensely 'there' - I love it!)

I'm pleased with the progression in the shots and the experience provides more food for thought with regard to possible new lenses - of course dosh is going to be primary deciding factor as to whether I get anything new or not. We'll see.
