The Dark Sector at South Pole houses three main science buildings: MAPO, SPT and IceCube.
Huge news recently came from a project housed in SPT (South Pole Telescope). The project, BICEP2, discovered evidence of the rapid expansion of the universe (essentially lingering gravity waves from the Big Bang). SPT is the building in the back with the huge telescope. The building in the foreground is MAPO and looks at similar things as SPT does.
Ice Cube is not in the image. Ice Cube has hundreds of 'doms' in the ice that detect neutrinos.
Dodging the Ice blocks along the beach at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon was pretty awesome and a little scary at times. I had read that photographers had been injured, washed out to sea and tripod legs broken as the freak waves hurled the invisible bergs up the black sandy shore. The ice size varied from tiny 'glassy marbles' to life size 'see-thru' cars. On occasions it was a matter of 'take the shot' and run for your life ; honestly !
Thank you for your views and comments.
For the macro mondays theme : Glass
Thank you for your time, faves and comments, It's much appriciated
I'm sorry, I'm too busy with Enjoying my holidays, so It's not a very well thought subject for this weeks assignment. Just my holiday-mood-drink: a glass of aperol spritz. 😊
Today we had a very nice aurora display here at South Pole, just above the DarkSector. The DarkSector is the area where all the big science experiments are located. There light and radio radiation is generally not allowed. Well, the auroras follow their own exceptions ;)
The IceCube-Lab building with the Milky Way in the background. Now the Moon is up again, which makes such images more difficult.
These days the Sun is getting lower and lower each day at the South Pole. It's already so close to the horizon that it creates seemingly endless shadows. For example the shadows of the IceCube Lab towers.
I have interpreted today's Macro-Challenge in a somewhat abstract way and designed the theme 'in a row' in such a way that the reflections are arranged in a row and not the ice cubes themselves. Unfortunately I did not succeed 100%...
The picture consists of 3 single shots, which I put together as HDR.

Just a fun shot, today. - How do you know if you're OCD? Well, one way might be.............
A while back, I was awakened in the middle of the night with THE WORST charlie horse of my life in the calf of my right leg. It was quite painful. When I had massaged it enough that I could put some weight on it and hobble out to the kitchen to get some ice to put on it (which usually does the trick and relieves the cramp in short order) I got out the ice cube tray and noticed that one of the ice cubes had popped up higher than the rest - sort of like a loaf of bread. Even though I was standing there in pain, I thought how interesting that was and that I ought to take a picture of it. I couldn't possibly disturb the scene to use the ice to relieve the pain in my throbbing leg! So I put the ice cube tray back in the freezer to preserve it and used a bag of frozen peas on my charlie horse instead. The next day I snapped this shot and then bid a fond farewell to the strange little ice cube in a glass of iced tea! : )
I think that qualifies as OCD!! - - - Oh, Flickr..... what you have done to me! ; )
.
Today there was a beautiful moon dog over the DarkSector. Ice crystals in the air produce the halo and the two dogs on the side.
At sunset here at South Pole I went out to the IceCube Lab building and found this ice cube just in front of the lab. With the sunset sky this makes a rather interesting picture. Don't you think?

Today I had to go out to the IceCube Lab here at South Pole. The full moon is up in the sky these days and with the strong winds we had today, the moon had this nice halo due to the many ice crystals in the air. The star constellation left to the moon is Scorpio, which points close to the galactic center.

Happy Macro Monday!
I had to go out to the IceCube Lab (ICL) here at South Pole to fix a broken power supply. I used that opportunity to take this image of the ICL building, some auroras on the horizon and the Milky Way.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FLICKR FRIENDS !
