Members of the International Visitors Council of Metropolitan Detroit meet with Assistant Secretary of State Ann Stock at the U.S. Department of State on February 17, 2011. The members were in Washington, DC attending the annual National Council for International Visitors’ (NCIV) National Meeting.

 

This year marks NCIV’s 50th anniversary and its half century partnership with the US Department of State. Members and volunteers from 90 community based organizations around the country spent three days sharing best practices, exchanging ideas and learning more about the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) exchanges.state.gov/ivlp one of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ Premier Exchange Programs.

 

The International Visitors Council of Metropolitan Detroit hosts International Visitors who travel to the United States on this program. They arrange professional meetings, cultural activities and home hospitality for visitors from around the world.

Disabilities rights leaders from across Africa are seeing how the U.S. federal and local governments and organizations address disability and accessibility issues on their IVLP. The Department of State and USAID are making inclusion of persons with disabilities a central element of policies, as a means to address the human rights abuses against the world’s one billion people with disabilities.

Disabilities rights leaders from across Africa are seeing how the U.S. federal and local governments and organizations address disability and accessibility issues on their IVLP. Musa Zulu of South Africa (on right) said this is the “trip of a lifetime” that he never thought possible, and his group was amazed at the ways in which the U.S. responds to the needs of people with disabilities.

Seventy International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) participants from around the world are participating in “The U.S. Electoral Process” initiative. The participants from 45 countries were welcomed by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Professional and Cultural Exchanges Susan Crystal and Director of the Office of International Visitors Anne Grimes at the United States Institute of Peace. The guest speaker was Kyle Kondik, the managing editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball.

GLOBE Israel hosts 2107 GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting and Training in Zichron Yaacov, the North of Israel

 

The group including GLOBE Director Dr. Tony Murphy, GLOBE Web Developer Cornell Lewis, who traveled from the U.S., as well as GLOBE Coordinators from European countries was hosted by GLOBE Israel National Coordinator Dr. Farid Hamdan at the Israeli Ministry of Education and U.S. EmbassyTel Aviv IVLP Alum.

 

November 6 DCM Leslie Tsou hosted a working dinner iho of GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting and Ministry of Education Officials: ICT Department Dr. Ofer Rimon, Head of Information Systems Technology, Mr. Ronny Dayan, Head of Information Technology, Dr. Gilmore Keshet, Director of Science Division, Pedagogic Secretariat, and Dr. Aviva Breiner, Chief Inspector of Science and Technology. DCM Tsou emphasized the importance of STEAM education and the special role that GLOBE plays in environmental education, conducting research, facilitating measurements and collecting data for NASA, as well as convening students from different communities together - Israeli Jewish, Arab, Bedouin and Druze students,religious and secular students from all over the country together.

 

November 9 GLOBE Israel facilitated two school visits to Amal ElementaryJewish School in Kfar Yona in the Center of Israel and Barta'a Junior High school located in the Israeli Arab village Bartaa on the border with the Palestinian Authority, where GLOBE U.S. and European representatives had a superb opportunity to learn hands on about GLOBE Israel activities in the Jewish and Arab sectors. Both visits attracted key officials - the mayors of Kfar Yona and Basma regioanl council which proved again that environment and willingness to take care of the Planet earth bring hearts and minds together. The students demonstrated the measurements that they conduct using the GLOBE app and explained about the activities they are involved in all year round.

Twenty-five women who are leading efforts to combat violent extremism in their communities in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and South and Central Asia are visiting the United States, June 6-21, to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program, “Women Preventing Violent Extremism.” This program is part of the State Department’s efforts to engage civil society and local communities in these efforts.

Forty-seven elected officials, political party leaders, and civic activists from around the world are participating in the IVLP project “The U.S. Electoral Process” to observe U.S. approaches to political campaigns and election administration. The participants from 45 countries were welcomed to the State Department by Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Marie Royce; the Director of the Office of International Visitors Anne Grimes; and IVLP program officer Stephen Taylor. The meeting also included presentations by officials of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor:

 

- Christie Arendt, Global Affairs Section Head, Office of Multilateral and Global Affairs, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL/MLGA),
