The idea of a memorial for US President Abraham Lincoln was conceived in 1867. However, it was only in 1901 when a memorial site was selected, and only in 1914 when construction started. The memorial was designed by Henry Bacon, and the imposing statue carved by the Piccirilli Brothers based on the design of Daniel Chester French. It was dedicated in 1922. In front of the memorial is a marker on the spot where Martin Luther King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.
