Tech: Pentax K-5 IIs | SMC Pentax-FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro

Shot at: ISO 400 | f/5.6 | 1/1000 sec

I visited my old city of Charleston, West Virginia during a few days in the region. Stopped over at the West Virginia State Capitol to take a few exteriors and came across some rather people friendly black squirrels on the grounds of the complex.

Black squirrels are a rare, though growing, subgroup of common squirrels who are melanistic, giving them a black coat. I love when I come across these, usually its been isolated to areas of the Great Lakes in Canada (especially Kingston), Michigan (Port Huron), and western New York. I know I saw one in the last couple of years somewhere closer to the Atlantic but can't remember where.

This 100mm Pentax-FA lens is nice, glad it came in time for the trip. I didn't have time to snap a lot of pictures but was happy I had the lens on me for this particular shot.

The History: León. Spain. Today it is a holiday in Spain. We have gone out to give a walk along the city at midday. The Sun takes us an hour of delay; for the clock it is 12 o'clock AM and for the Sun it is 11 o'clock AM. I happen for the street Alfonso V and see the backlight. The lights that adorn the streets really are extinguished, but the light of the Sun seems that it was igniting them. The thermometer of the drugstore marks 6 centigrade degrees, without wind; fresh but agreeable day at the same time.

Taking up: I place in the opposite sidewalk and orientate myself towards medium zone of the street. I hope calmly that it has an interesting set of persons. Someone approaches in bicycle and I leave him to move away towards the bottom of the street. It crosses other one of sidewalk to the bottom. I take advantage of this moment before cars happen between both persons.

Treatment: With Aperture. Original JPG with Aperture Basic improving. I have had that does modifications in the lights and the contrast to give this dark aspect where the lights stand out clearly. I reduce the saturation of color to 68 %, raise the contrast and the black point. I saturate the high lights of important form. With the modifications in the histogram of light I manage to force the whites and dense blacks.

That's all folks !!

(Fr). Histoire: Léon. L'Espagne.

Sometimes, I find images comprised of only reflections more interesting than images containing only the subjects being reflected. To capture such an image requires a reflective surface and something to be reflected in it.

Most locations share a similar nearby reflection source: water. When water is the reflective surface and there is at least a small amount of motion on the water surface, no two photos will be the same. You can capture 20 images from a tripod-mounted camera and still have no duplicates. Such images can sometimes work together for a low-effort collection.

Water in motion is ... in motion. To stop motion requires an adequately short shutter speed and to achieve stopped motion in this frame, I opted for ISO 400 (vs. the least-noisy ISO 100 option). The final image has very little noticeable noise and the small waves are not showing blur.

For this image, I found a brightly colored boat as the reflective subject and adjusted my position until I had what I felt was ideal framing. I especially like how the top and bottom borders of the frame are relatively uninterrupted by lines in this composition.

Keep in mind that reflection images often benefit from increased contrast and saturation in post processing.
