Canon EOS 6D - f/7.1 - 1/100sec - 100 mm - ISO 400

- Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' is one of the most winter hardy hydrangeas. An important feature is that it flowers on new shoots so you better prune or trim it early in the season to achieve a denser plant and to avoid it grows to tall. If pruned it will grow to ca. 150 - 200cm

This is a panicle type hydrangea, not a mop-head one with big leaves and large flowers heads. Well, how to explain then that this new variety has even bigger flowers? Never mind, let’s just call them XXL size. The panicles are upto 30 cm long, fat blossoms of greenish-white colour when they come out in early August, changing to almost white after about 2-3 weeks and turning clear pink in September. The shade of pink is not a fading one, but fresh pink as if it was meant to be pink from the very beginning. Ovate, pointed leaves are dark green.

captured this very cool sculpture by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. called The Awakening along the shores of the National Harbor in Maryland during sunset yesterday...this piece was first displayed at Hains Point in Washington DC before it was transferred over to this awesome harbor town...it is a statue of a giant embedded in the earth and is struggling to free himself...this was our last day in MAryland and DC, we had a great dinner with the family and we actually just got home a couple of hours ago after a long drive back...always feels great to be back home...pls.View On Black

My monthly photo project this year is "12 twins in 22". Each month I will use a different twin lens reflex (TLR) camera.

August's camera is an old type Rolleiflex Standard, dating from the early 1930s. Cosmetically it's in poor condition, but it all works. There is some fungus in the lens, so the results are rather soft. The film is Lomography ISO 400 Colour Negative, processed in the Fuji Hunt C41 kit.

I am reading the new book "Digital Capture After Dark" by Amanda Quintenz-Fiedler and Philipp Scholz Rittermann. The book intrigues me again on the night photography.

But I am born to be a lazy photographer. I do not want to go to the remote or exotic places for night photography. I do not shoot RAW and I do not use a lot of post-production techniques as suggested by the writers. I don't even use DSLR for night shooting as everyone said compact camera has too much noise in the small sensor.

Anyways I just walk in the back alley in my neighbourhood and shoot in JPEG. I am just too lazy to fiddle around the white balance and therefore shoot in the B&W mode in-camera.

My photo club friends always tease me as crazy guy that associates photography with philosophy. Yes there is the philosophy that inspires you to see the beauty in mundane subjects and I believe there is a special charisma of night too. When the night falls, you can see some sort of special beauty even in a back alley.

Do you think so?

Happy weekend!

A few weeks ago, my wife and I went to Steveston, a small fishing port and tourist area, for a seafood dinner. As we walked on the docks after dinner, I came across three swans among the fishing boats. I rather like the late day light in this shot. Presumably, they were looking for a fish dinner, too. The photo was Taken in July 2015, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

the end is near for the Hosta leaves

- Hosta 'Green Acres' has gained a great deal of popularity because of its immense size. It can be very effective as a backgound plant or space-eating ground cover. The leaf blade is distinctive in being so large but having a relatively narrow shape and distinct waviness.

In my garden this hosta is about 2 meters wide.
