I try to vary my posts so they aren't they same old thing (would be easy to do). Time for a waterfall.
This is the bottom of Rainier Park's Narada Falls. I found the falling waters interplay and flow thru these golden boulders as beautiful as the rest of the falls (shown in comments).
Thank you for taking a look!

Light and shade are fundamental elements of photography, as they play a crucial role in creating depth, contrast, and mood in an image. In photography, light refers to the amount and quality of light that falls on a subject, while shade refers to areas of the image that are not directly illuminated by the light source.
The interplay between light and shade can create dramatic effects in a photograph, from high contrast black and white images to softly lit portraits with a range of subtle shades of gray. By manipulating the light source, photographers can create different moods and emotions in their images.
The direction and intensity of the light source can also affect the way the subject is perceived in the photograph. For example, direct light from above can create harsh shadows and highlight textures, while soft, diffused light can create a more even and flattering illumination.
In addition to natural light, photographers can also use artificial light sources such as strobes, continuous lights, and reflectors to control the light and shade in their images. By understanding the basics of light and shade, photographers can create images that are not only technically proficient but also visually striking and emotionally engaging.
Chiaroscuro, derived from the Italian words "chiaro" (light) and "scuro" (dark), is a prominent technique in art, particularly in painting and drawing. It involves the skillful use of strong contrasts between light and dark elements within a composition. These bold variations in light and shadow not only create visual drama but also play a crucial role in conveying depth, form, and a three-dimensional quality to the objects and figures depicted in the artwork.
In the world of art, chiaroscuro is often used to enhance the realism and sculptural quality of a subject. By strategically placing highlights and shadows, artists can give the illusion of volume, texture, and spatial relationships, making two-dimensional artworks appear more lifelike and tangible.
Chiaroscuro is a technique that has been employed by many renowned artists throughout history, with notable examples including the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Leonardo da Vinci. Their masterful use of light and shadow not only brought their subjects to life but also added emotional depth and atmosphere to their creations.
This concept of chiaroscuro extends beyond the realm of visual arts and finds application in other forms of media as well. In cinema and photography, the manipulation of light and shadow to create dramatic effects and depth is also referred to as chiaroscuro. Filmmakers and photographers use this technique to evoke mood, highlight key elements, and enhance storytelling through the interplay of light and darkness.
Chiaroscuro is a fundamental artistic technique that harnesses the power of contrasting light and dark to achieve both visual impact and a sense of three-dimensionality. It remains a timeless and influential aspect of artistic expression, bridging the gap between traditional art forms and contemporary media like film and photography.
"Interplay and interaction are the integral parts of music - they're as important as the notes."

Redwood has so many fantastic locations to shoot, its actually quite difficult to put the camera away. We were there on a slightly foggy morning when the sun was trying to reach the forest floor. What caught my eye the most though was the interplay between light areas and dark. So I looked specifically for an area that had light at the end of a darker passage. I then tried to use the road as a leading line to pull you it the frame.
The road was not that well maintained. We have a lifted Subaru, so I felt ok. I actually felt fairly manly, and then as always happens in that case, you end up passing a Honda Civic and then you feel stupid. Some folks can be very intrepid with a Civic I guess.
Sunshine that filters through the leaves of trees- the interplay between light and the leaves.
It is amazing how the Japanese language provides untranslatable words for poetic phenomena like Komorebi. There are words in other languages that try to explain this phenomenon, but none directly refers to the sun hitting the trees.

Sunset at Pacific Beach, Washington
"Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep."
-William Shakespeare , The Tempest
I have not been able to hike for a few weeks due to a foot injury, so I am catching up on posting some images from earlier in the summer. In mid-July I spent another four days out on the Washington coast, and was lucky to experience three beautiful sunsets while I was there. Each one was different, and captivating in its own way.
This one was taken on the final night. It was the cloudiest of the three evenings, and there was a thick layer of clouds and fog along the horizon. But as the sun sank into them, the interplay of light and clouds and the way they swirled and danced together was absolutely mesmerizing, and I watched from the water's edge until the light faded and dissolved into dusk.

An idiosyncratic interplay of curves and edges, shimmering plaster and seemingly randomly distributed, colourfully framed windows characterises the image of a residential building on Badenerstrasse in Zurich by the architects Camenzind Evolution. The striking and architecturally superior building with the name "KISS" - which stands for "Uncompromising. Individual. Sweet. Sauer." - houses 46 individually designed maisonette flats. I photographed the façade in autumn 2020. I will soon be back in Zurich.

Of no great significance the subject matter's purpose here was to reveal the interplay of light and shade. What I saw at this corner was the beauty of the tonal scheme and design.
It wasn't until I received the print from the lab that I appreciated it's inherent rhythm.

Inside the Horizon, Artwork by Olafur Eliasson
"Like a giant kaleidoscope, Eliasson's work is composed of forty-three prism-shaped columns of varying widths, which are placed along the walkway in the Grotto around the pool. The columns are illuminated from the inside. Two of the sides are covered with mirrors and the third is covered in a yellow blown-glass mosaic. Visitors are invited to walk amongst them, activating an endless interplay of reflections."

The name 'Generalife' means 'garden of the architect'. The Generalife is located on the hill Cerro del Sol, adjacent to the Alhambra. Originally it was most probably an architect's house that later passed to the Arab kings and was remodelled. The Generalife is composed of a series of large gardens, where every corner holds a novelty and a pleasant surprise for the eyes, with a minimum of obtrusive buildings.
The Patio is the true heart of the Generalife. Here, Arab sensuality becomes sparse yet spiritual.
The most beautiful and striking features in the Generalife gardens are the plants, the water with its continuous interplay with light, and its sounds.
This week is probably my "week of the forest" ;-). This transitional period between winter, the snow has disappeared, and spring offers a great interplay between cold at night and milder temperatures per day - combined with many rainfall. This apparently offers a fogging a wonderful basis. A great mood that can form in the forest thus.
Wilson’s Falls is an overlooked set of falls on the Muskoka River that gets little play due to the other big names on the river Bracebridge Falls and High Falls. If you drive down the road named after the falls you come to a power generating station that dams the left side view from the bottom but the right side opens up to this small cascade view. I discovered on this trip that I like to capture falls that have lots of spray and mist in the air the interplay between the airborne moisture and the rising light make for some nice shots at times.
I took this on Sept 27th, 2021 with my D850 and Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 Lens at 70mm, 1.6s, f16 ISO 64 processed in LR, PS +Topaz ,and DXO

Britzer Garten
Water is a formative element of the Britzer Garten. The ten-hectare lake, surrounded by a hilly landscape, forms its calm heart. Nearby are three smaller lakes, and slender streams and waterfalls traverse the park. In many parts of the lake area the vegetation, including bushes, shrubs and meadows, continues down to the banks and into the water. An interplay of space and small details, light and shade, hill and valley, lakes, springs and brooks gives the interior of the park its characteristic aesthetic. Its many garden attractions and special gardens blend harmoniously into the park landscape.

Usually this is shot right after the sun crests the horizon and creates a glow on the canyon walls and bright reflection in the river, but the clouds on this morning blocked some of that light. But I really liked the interplay of the muted warm and cool tones on this incredible landscape of the canyonlands.
Life is so full of beautiful moments. Late one evening, as our family was leaving the beach, I noticed the light playing on the wave-like terrain of the beach sand. I crouched low on the ground so I could capture the interplay of light and shadows. Thank you, Mother Nature!
On a cold morning in March 2016, I sat shivering and sheltering under a tree as heavy rain and strong winds lashed Lake Pehoé behind me. It was the tail-end of a fierce storm that had been battering us for hours, but it was almost over, and the light to follow it would be the making of photography dreams.
Light of the Cuernos is a wild, mountainous photo of Torres Del Paine national park and is one of my all-time most cherished and adorned photographs. It represents the passion and pursuit of landscape photography with the interplay of mother nature's ferocity at its best.
The combination of weather and light captured in this image is a true embodiment of the phrase "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" - making this a genuinely one-off and highly collectible piece.

I have walked past this place off and on for 20 years, and today it spoke to me, so here it is - an interplay of elements and shapes.

Photographing one morning in Glacier National Park, most of us were focused on the sun's interplay with the mountains and the lake behind us. Looking up, I saw this 'con' trail from an airliner high up and was able to quickly remove my camera from my tripod in time to quickly frame a single image just immediately before the plane disappeared behind the mountain above. I wonder if their view from above was half as majestic as was ours below.
Another image from our first morning at the Seiser Alm. Here, the sun was already pretty high, but out of nowhere some clouds appeared which partially blocked the sun resulting in this nice interplay of light and shadow. Hope you like it! :)

"Both the Eye Film Institute’s concept and urban implementation are based on an overlay of two creative disciplines which have at their core reality and fiction, illusion and real experience. The building concept becomes the story board, the architecture the scenography. By delivering a dynamic interplay, the building’s assigned role oscillates between acting as the urban scenery’s protagonist and as a dramaturgical element placed in front of a heterogeneous landscape setting." archdaily.com
I love when the wind send the water flying over the beach creating beautiful sand patterns. The low sunlight emphasises these shapes. It's a beautiful interplay of sand water and wind. Jukebox is by The Strokes.
Came upon this view while hiking up to Lake Agnes there in Banff National Park. Just had to stop and take a shot ... hard to do this view justice but liked the interplay of tall pines and the peaks and the patch of blue sky through the clouds.

A female Great Horned Owl takes a short respite from her nest. I was intrigued by this perched owl because it gave me an opportunity to study light and shadow. I tried to wait until the sunlight filtered in to highlight part of her face. I took many shots but this one fulfilled my light and shadow objective.

Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland.
Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers.
Jökulsárlón has been a setting for four Hollywood movies.
These icebergs are seen in two shades: milky white and bright blue, which depends on the air trapped within the ice and is an interplay of light and ice crystals. And due to volcanic activity the ice can turn black due to the ashes covering the glacier after an eruption.
A classical dancer performing Bharatanatyam, a series of illustrative delicate moves with impressive footwork, facial expressions. The Origins of this dance stems from the early traditions of Hinduism possibly around 500 BCE and 500 CE. However in this image I have focused with a noir effect and the interplay of light and shadow.
