Submitted interior design element for an under construction, huge up-scale log-built lodge. This is for full coverage of the dining room‘s uninterrupted 14x32 foot wall. Large bank of plate glass windows to right facing the lake and the surrounding pine forest. Client wants something “over-the-top” dramatic and dynamic that will complement the warmth of the log and stone interior.
Of course, if I was to put this into my dining room at full size, I would have to trim 6 feet off the top or bottom. However, the length would be handy as it would be a continuous wrap for all four walls - eliminating the need to “balance” the other walls with some other decorative element. On the other hand, the dynamic element would be sacrificed to necessity by needing essential cuts to accommodate the singular window and door. In the end - in my mind’s eye and in my dining room - the effect might be so “over-the-top” that it would make me and my dining guests feel like we were chipmunks in a hollowed log and might be crushed any moment.
Returning to sanity, with uncommon effort, I will accept present circumstances by keeping to the current bare, neutral walls now adorning the walls and allow the “dramatic and dynamic” to be expressed on dinner plates and the gentile conversations of the dinner guests. Anyone for dessert?

Interior of the Whipple House at the Dalton Gang Hideout in Meade, Kansas. It was built in 1887 into the sloping hillside. The former entrance faces west. Visitors now enter the home through the underground tunnel that connects the house to the barn.
The Dalton Gang Hideout was built in 1887 by J.N. Whipple for his wife Eva (Dalton) Whipple on top of a hill. After the Whipples departed Meade a crude tunnel was discovered leading to the barn below. It was where Eva's brothers the famous Dalton Gang supposedly went undetected. No primary source evidence supports this claim. In 1941, the NYA and WPA constructed the tunnel and a museum opened in 1941 first in the Whipple house and then moved to the second floor of the barn. It is now ran by the Meade County Historical Society.

El edificio define sus características fundamentales en relación con el recinto amurallado de la ciudad de Ávila y crea un gran espacio público de acceso orientado al mismo. Su organización permite la adaptación a los distintos requerimientos funcionales derivados de un amplio programa de actividades. Sus interiores se organizan según una secuencia donde los materiales y el uso de la luz ayudan a significar el valor del conjunto.
El proyecto propone una gran explanada, un lugar de encuentro al borde de las murallas “plaza del nuevo mercado lúdico”, con una superficie aproximada de 10.000 m2 orientada al sur, que permite organizar eventos culturales y expositivos al aire libre. La edificación ocupa básicamente el lateral norte de ese espacio público. En función de la topografía, el proyecto hace convivir dos geometrías diferentes que se adaptan al terreno desarrollando un volumen tallado y trabajado como si de una pieza que emerge del subsuelo granítico del entorno se tratara. La parte más ortogonal y alargada contiene los auditorios y salas principales. La parte más irregular y adaptada al suelo, alberga el área de exposiciones. Sus fachadas de granito rugoso se funden con el entorno asegurando mediante superficies vidriadas la relación visual entre el interior del edificio y los lienzos de las murallas que constituyen su horizonte.
La edificación se desarrolla de manera que a los auditorios principales se llega desde la plaza y por la parte más alta de su graderío, permitiendo una comprensión inmediata del espacio interior. El área de exposiciones tiene un acceso independiente desde las “quebradas” en las que se rompe la plataforma en el límite este.
Desde un punto de vista formal y constructivo, la actuación se inspira en la fuerza evocadora del paisaje, en la masa granítica que todo lo invade. Los volúmenes se piensan para ser vistos desde la distancia. El edificio se percibe desde lo alto de las murallas como una manipulación cincelada de la gran roca del terreno. Se trata de una yuxtaposición de volúmenes de granito. Resumida en una pieza, más ortogonal, que se esculpe de una manera precisa y otra algo más abrupta e irregular que aloja el volumen de las exposiciones. Son esos pliegues los que generan grietas para el paso de la luz natural y el acceso independiente a esta zona.
Los distintos auditorios, salas y áreas de exposición, se suceden en su interior organizados según recorridos donde la riqueza espacial constituye un objetivo fundamental. Destaca la gran Sala Sinfónica con una superficie de 1600 m2 y capacidad para 1390 espectadores, divisible en dos. Además se distribuyen sobre este bloque principal la denominada Sala Dorsal, la Sala de Cámara, 3 salas de conferencias, la Sala de Prensa y 3 salas multifuncionales, con sus correspondientes zonas de servicio, camerinos y almacenaje. Los vestíbulos han sido diseñados para facilitar el acceso a las salas y, en caso necesario, habilitarse para exposiciones o recepciones.
El complejo dispone además, con carácter independiente, de un volumen compuesto una sala de Exposiciones y un conjunto de 6 Salas para Congresos.
En lugar prominente del edificio principal, con vistas directas a la muralla, se sitúan las áreas de cafetería y restaurante, que presentan una gran fachada de vidrio, reforzando el tratamiento especular del recinto amurallado.
