The Dolomites are one of those places that, as you turn the corner and see it, you just wonder "How can this be place real?” This happened to me when I was enjoying the nice last lights at sunset over Santa Maddalena church, a place that looks like something out of a fairy tale.

For anybody interested, here is my setup. See my previous 2 posts.
I'm sure for a lot of you this is not at all interesting. However, for some of you it's great. It simply shows how easy this is and can keep you engaged when you are out of ideas and stuck at home.
I just wanted to put that one here for you.
It was taken during one of my workshops in Warsaw last year.
Oh I want to record some videos since we are under lockdown. Let me know if you are interested in any of my edits
...why are these animals always staring at me? Ok - it's probably based on mutuality :-)

This year's Christmas tree saga, if interested.
Nobody who knows me will ever say she's a perfectionist.
I have always been an "ok, pretty good" person, as per image in first comment box.
EXCEPT when selecting the Christmas tree (real one).
It has to be perfect.
My son arrived Sat. evening and on Sunday we planned to get the tree, and then do errands, some shopping and go to the market for groceries.
So off we go on Sunday out to the country to a place called Kulak's where I get my tree every year. But when we get there they only have great huge trees left, and I want a small one.
We come back to town and I say there's a florist shop not too far, they have wreaths, so maybe some trees. We go there, see some trees in a stall but it's Sunday and they're closed.
Ok. I know another big nursery about 8 miles down Rt 7, and I bet they have trees. We go and they do, but only about 5 smaller ones.
This was the best of them, but the top branch where I put the star was crooked and the star would be off center.
Chills down my spine.
Ok, good opportunity for me to deal with "nobody's perfect, live with it"
The problem being that years ago I purchased a tree stand from Kulak's that has a center spike in it and they drill a hole to match in the tree trunk, it goes on easily.
But this place doesn't do that.
Adam says buy it, bag it, we'll take it to Kulak's, pay them and they'll drill the hole. I said but we didn't buy it from them, he says they'll do it if we pay them.
So back to town, back thru town, back to the country, and Kulak's did it, They're very nice and helpful people.
Now tra-laaa, we have the tree.
We bring it back to the apartment, step inside and we smell gas. Has to be coming from the furnace.
Call the gas company, the come right away. So does a snow storm.
The furnace is old, from the 1960's and it's shot, it's leaking gas and valves aren't working, etc etc. Adam writes it all down.
They say it's not safe, you need a new furnace and we have to shut off the gas, so we'll have no heat.
Call your maintenance people, have them install a new one, call us back when they do, we'll come check and if it's good we'll turn the gas back on.
So....the saga of getting that done is a VERY long one and I won't bore you with it.
But 3 days later, I have an imperfect tree, bless its crooked little head, and a perfectly good, new furnace.....and heat.
All's well that ends well.
This is just a quick iPhone click.
I'm not on Flickr that much these days so have missed your posts, the time is still very busy with my son, family and friends.
I hope you're all having a happy holiday season.

Motion blur of Autumn Foliage inspired by Thomas Schoeller www.flickr.com/photos/saddletrampimages
With that said, I need a lot of practice and his are far better. ;-) Thanks for the inspiration my friend Thomas!
Since this type of photography is all new to me, if this is a flop feel free to critique. I always enjoy feedback! With that said, I personally don't love white skies but here at least in my opinion it worked and looks like white paint streaking through the shot. ;-)
I have been on the hunt and driving all week looking for Autumn foliage and there is just not much, just a sprinkle here and there around the state when it should be peak foliage by now. We have a pretty extreme drought as well. Our lakes, rivers, and waterfalls are dried up. So photographing has been a challenge over the last several days.
I got my ND filter and went out yesterday and used it. OMG, Too funny! So here is an idea! Photograph as if you are a blind man! LOL All my photos were blurry, that is the ones I shot with the ND filter. Ok, so it is not blond proof and next time I will focus the camera before I put the ND filter on. LOL
I was kind of distracted in a good way though. I met a new friend that is learning photography that is visiting in Connecticut from Europe. I helped him out to give him some advice about settings. Though, he is absolutely a natural! He was so very kind too! He gave me an Amber necklace when he took a quick run home to get his tripod. He is a jazz musician and he also gave me his CD! It is amazing! Most of all, I enjoyed the company and meeting a great guy and a new friend!

Reflections On A Question Not Asked (JHWatkins)
I would not worship nature,
but
watch the firestorms
of evening Eden’s
colliding with collars of stars,
bordering the spreading blankets...
flowing......floating on mist.
Here deep spells
speak to rising hearts
of early years... tears...
and beginnings,
failed then
flourishing
in fading light.
Many the meetings in mirrors,
Reflection souls,
Broken and healed,
Sing out, having heard the cry
Wishing, then wondering-
Then washed by
colors of the night.
I would not worship nature
but cry quietly at
whispers of deep dreamy forests
drumming with wooden warmth
lost in caverns,
ascending in autumns,
forsaken in fragments
and
flames of the glowing day.
Come softer than nature,
with wounded revelations,
Waves of somber subtle summers,
winters, and springs-
Come straighter and stronger,
on strict lines of deft decisions
resting by quietest waters
of heart streams
that have come home
to the
fountain of the universe.

Better Large-A re-cut of a previous picture that needed to be brought up to date. Driving through the US, I could stop and take pictures everyday, summer, winter, spring, and fall. Personally, I try to take pictures that represent a particular area. The northern Midwestern states bloom in the summer with the wheat fields! 0030

Every Season Has Its Own Glory (JHWatkins)
Every season has its own glory,
Every purpose has its own time,
Every moment has its own story,
Every story has its own line.
I have walked deep into cities,
Shining brightly never to fail,
Listened to heart cries,
Lost in the morning,
Standing on corners
Stagnant and stale.
Where is the hope
That brought forth the laughter?
Where is the song?
The music unveiled?
Why are the choices so
Wasted and bitter?
Gathered in hatred,
Broken and pale.
I have seen (new) stars on the mountains,
Fed on the movement of heaven and earth-
Free on the framework
Of perfect perspective,
Fueled by the turning of terrible truth.
Come now and sing of mists in the forest,
Sensual sonnets of songs in the dirt-
Come and behold the delicate balance
Of seasons and reasons and rhythms
And birth.
There are the voices lost in confusion,
Crushed in the thriving, deepening swale-
Calloused and cold the circling conveyance,
Crippled emotion commotion prevails.
Beacons in quiet of last true performance,
Heralded nature in singular cause-
Perfect and pure
Though wasted and slandered.
Washed by confession
In smoldering awe.
Severed connections, squandered projections-
Revered reflections of stammering tongues-
Coined by controlling contriving convections,
In different directions now written in stone.
Now is the time to look to the heavens,
Now is the moment to take up the cause,
Now is the voice of blazing amazement,
Borne on the winds of the gathering storm.
Listen to stream, listen to forest,
Listen to flower, and staggering fawn-
Listen to voices rolling like thunder,
Come drink of the waters
And dance with the dawn.
Wrapped in the garments of natural beauty,
Facing the force of the burgeoning call-
Strong in the seasons of life and creation,
Firm on foundations that never will fall.

Our reasons for being interested in Ernest Eglinton arre set out in two blog posts arising from the Australian Research Council project on Native Mounted Police in Queensland.

Ernest Eglinton was the Sub-Inspector in Boulia who took part in those massacres. Much of my work in NW Queensland has derived from my friendship with and work with his grandson Tom born to the Yalarrnga woman, Ruby.
Eglinton also had a non-Aboriginal family and they ended up living in Brisbane at a house just to the right of these steps. A relative remembers staying in the house in 1954 and that the garden went down a lot behind the house. That is what these steps represent.

This is Škocjanske jame, or The Skocjan Caves, a must visit place on our road trip through Slovenia. This is the point where the Reka River disappears underground and then flows underground for 34 kilometers.
What you are looking at is the collapsed part of a cave system with the river flowing out at the bottom before re-entering the cave system somewhere under my feet.
We hiked around this hole in the ground to the church in the distance, Cerkev sv. Kancijana. Over by the church is another big hole, in amongst the houses.
The area is quite alarming really, I wouldn't live here if you paid me.
As we arrived at this spot I immediately realised I'd need a wide angle lens so I swapped to my 16mm-35mm. Then I realised I'd have to pano the shot to fit it all in.
So this is a four shot pano at 16mm, it's a big hole.
The history here goes back thousands of years so if you're interested look up the Wiki.

Just a bit O' Fiction for anyone interested in that sort of thing
When Connor Flynn applied to join the Army Aircorp in 1942 the recruiter told him no, he'd not be able to see over the dash. Connor suggested that the man stand on the flight line and he'd take his hat off with his wingtip.
He finished training top of his class and a year and a half later he was an ace three times over.
Called Scrappy by his friends for his tenacity in and out of the cockpit, the fiery redhead found himself on yet another bomber escort mission. The Luftwaffe knew just how far his wing could fly and wouldn't rise to engage until he and his cohorts were forced to turn back for lack of fuel. Connor had had enough. Enough of the repeatedly failed missions, enough of this endless war, enough....On this day he feigned engine trouble and backed out of formation, then climbed to 35,000 feet and throttled his Jug back to save some gas for the hungry turboprop and he waited. Soon enough the order to turn back came and still he waited. Then the scattered calls from the airmen in the B-17's could be heard, it was time. Easing the throttles forward and smoothly dropping below the clouds he soon found the melee ahead. He made out about twenty 109's and they were having their way with the lumbering bombers who he knew, if this kept up they would drop bombs and head home nowhere near their target and they'd all have to do it again tomorrow. Scrappy dove into the fray and scored five more kills having taken the German's by surprise all the while getting cheers from the kids in the bombers, but eventually he got raked turning for the next pair ahead. White smoke billowed from the engine cowling, a sure sign that water was getting into the oil, and he turned back toward England. He knew that he wouldn't make it, of course, but the fight was over for him, even now two Messerschmitt's were lined up on his tail, but they didn't fire. They were waiting for him to bail out so that they could drill him in his chute. They'd no doubt seen the rows of swastika's painted on his fuselage and were now toying with him. The engine temp light blared red in his eyes and the nose dipped on the crippled plane, "God, I love flying," thought Scrappy, "There's nothi"
Yes, I know that this isn't a P-47, sadly there were none at the McChord Air Show. I wanted to talk about the processing though. My friend Wayne has a painting that's about 30x60 on his wall by Barrie Clark that is just amazing. It is coming out of daylight to the viewers right and flying into clouds/smoke/certain death, it grabs your heart. Look it up, the link is in the first comment box.
Having always been interested in Astronomy, Cosmology, and Physics, I jumped at an opportunity last week to attend a "Mars Party" at the Northern Skies Observatory in Peacham, Vermont. The observatory is operated by the Northeast Kingdom Astronomy Foundation. We started off on smaller telescopes set up outside, viewing Venus, Mars, Saturn, and their moons.
Once it got darker, we moved into the observatory to see how the telescope worked. The astronomer told us about a rare class of bizarre stars called Wolf Rayet, and talked about a particular one named WR136. This star is near the center of the Crescent Nebula in constellation Cygnus, 5000 light years from Earth. WR136 is about 3 times the radius of our sun and 15 times its mass, yet it is an incredible 250,000 times brighter than our sun. A photo was then taken. It was interesting to note that all photos taken by telescopes such as this one, and even the Hubble, are inherently black and white, getting their colors solely from filters.
The telescope itself is robotically controlled and has a 17 inch diameter mirror, the second largest in Vermont. The software that operates the telescope is quite sophisticated. A person can simply type in the name of an object to be viewed or photographed, and the telescope will be robotically moved to the correct position. This coordinates with the software for the 14.5 foot dome, so that the door at the top opens (if closed) and rotates to the position associated with the telescope. The telescope then continues to track the object so that multiple photos can be taken and stacked. Additionally, this can all run in an unattended mode, where a list of objects to be photographed has been provided, and the software will work to take photos of those objects. To accomplish this, the software determines when those objects will be in the field of view, and checks that sky conditions are right for photos (e.g. it is dark enough, and the sky is clear).
The above photo was taken facing North (more precisely, NNE), so the galactic core of the Milky Way is not visible here. You may be able to see the spiral galaxy Andromeda, about half way up the sky on the right. The photo was taken 2 days before the Perseid meter showers are at peak, but it will be overcast on those days at this location. However, we did still see a few meteors that night, and I managed to capture one in the photo.
The observatory is open to the public for scheduled events. See their website or Facebook page for more info.

Updates:
- I received an e-mail from William Vinton, President of the Northeast Kingdom Astronomy Foundation, indicating that the two bright, closely spaced objects near the center are the famous "Double Cluster" in constellation Perseus, two open star clusters, each of which contains about 300 to 400 stars. The clusters are about 7000 light years distant and only a few hundred light years apart. For comparison, the Andromeda Galaxy is 2.5 million light years distant.
- The telescope is a PlaneWave f/6.8 17 inch CDK.
- The camera is an Apogee Alta F16M Monochrome CCD with a Kodak 52 mm full frame sensor.
- The observatory is one of about 20 on the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network, whose major purpose is to record, image, and study gamma-ray bursts.
- See this photo of the Triangulum galaxy taken with the telescope at this observatory and processed with FITS: www.flickr.com/photos/davetrono/48687865046
