Informed Health 2015: The UCSF Informatics + Digital Health Conference; Digital health fueled by Informatics: Powering education, research and clinical care innovation -- featured expert presentations from academia and the private sector, exhibits, breakout focus groups, and an announcement by Chancellor Sam Hawgood of the appointment of Atul Butte, MD, PhD, to lead the new UCSF Institute for Computational Health Scienceswas held at the UCSF Mission Bay.Conference Center.

This large interior space runs from floor to ceiling of the building. The photograph just manages to show the six floors it spans. A view of this same corner from the outside of the building can be seen here.

At the bottom you can just see the top of the ground floor, the dark central bit being the entrance. The two people on the floating spiral staircase are looking at the large display screen at bottom right. That shows the Principal of the University on a podium in the other half of the Atrium space (behind the camera) introducing Alec Salmond at the formal opening of the Forum.

It's always a mistake to use building contractors as architectural shot stagers. It's a case of differing professional standards :-)

The ‘Informatics Forum’ at Edinburgh University annoys me not just architecturally, but also because of its meaningless, bullshitty name. ‘Informatics’ tends to mean ‘computing science’ in other countries, but the word never really caught on in the UK; meanwhile, I suspect the building isn’t really a ‘forum’, so it is named with two meaningless words.

The building displays several characteristics of ‘new ruins’ architecture, of which two are on display here: unevenly sized/placed windows, and colour coding for floors.

Snapped this shot as I was walking in for the BlogIN event today.

Over the past six years Alfredo Cramerotti has written about the aesthetic merger of contemporary art and the news media. Drawing from his book Aesthetic Journalism: How to inform without informing (2009, Intellect), Cramerotti provocatively advances the idea that art and journalism are not separate forms of communication, but rather two sides of a unique activity , the production and distribution of images and information. As aesthetic regimes, both journalism and artistic makes claims for the truth, albeit of a different kind. One is a coded system that speaks for the truth (or so it claims), the other a set of activities that questions itself at every step (or so it claims), thus making truth. Whereas journalism provides a view on the world ‘out there,’ as it ‘really’ is, art often presents a view on the view, truth posited as acts of (self)reflection. Cramerotti will examine both as a types of truth production, as systems of information that defines truth in terms of the visible: producing not only what can be seen, but also what can be imagined, and thus imaged. As such, we start to get closer to the core of reality itself when we make our reality not a given, irreversible fact, but a possibility among many others.

The talk generated a principal question: is it possible to work with aesthetics and informatics, to be both reflective and precise? To both employ documentary techniques and journalistic methods while remaining self-reflecting and critical on those means? Ultimately, the artist’s work is not about delivering information but questioning it, reversing the tradition of both fields (art and journalism), to highlight both the aesthetic workings and trappings of reportage and the informational turn within current aesthetic production.

The fifth volume of Stadtklang, the UCL Urban Laboratory music night, took place on Sunday 20 March at Somerset House as part of the 'Venturing Beyond: Graffiti and the Everyday Utopias of the Street' exhibition.

Writer and theorist Kodwo Eshun of The Otolith Group was in conversation with Ayesha Hameed - co-editor of a new book ‘Visual Culture as Time Travel’ and lecturer in the Department of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths, University of London - and Louis Moreno to discuss 'The Last Angel of History' - a video essay from the Black Audio Film Collective exploring informatics, technics, mutation, posthumanity and extraterrestriality.

The discussion centred on the film’s themes and its critical role in the production of new Afro- and other futurisms. Kodwo also played a playlist especially for Stadtklang offering his take on Afrofuturist sound. Benny Blanco and Nonsense from NTS Radio played sets inspired by cities, science-fiction and utopia.

With thanks to the Department of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths, University of London, Approved (by) Pablo, Somerset House, and London Speaker Hire for their support.

Youssouf cuts a very imposing figure in any room. I met him with his friends at a downtown Ottawa hotel celebrating a friends birthday. He is very easy to talk to and was quite interested in my project.

Youssouf is studying Informatics at the Universite Du Quebec in Gatineau. Informatics he explained is the science of computer information, it involves the practice of information processing and the engineering of information systems. Well you learn something new everyday.

Youssouf is from the West African nation of Niger and is enjoying his time in Canada.

Thank you Youssouf for participating in my project, I wish you much success in your studies.

This is picture #144 in my second strangers series.
