When I arrived on the summit it was windy and there were basically no views, as the summit was shrouded in clouds. Originally I meant to bivy right on the summit of Cìr Mhòr, but there is not even enough space for a bivy bag - at least none where you wouldn't be afraid of a deep fall when rolling around at night. So I picked a grassy spot at the foot of the summit rocks, right next to Rosa Pinnacle. That spot would have easily been large enough for my solo tent, and for a while I almost regretted that I didn't bring my beloved Hilleberg Akto, and only brought my new bivy bag instead. But when the clouds started to clear I began to really look forward to a night under the stars.
After my first night in it I can say: That OR Alpine AscentShell bivy is really great!
Seneca Improved View 5x7 with 4x5 reducing back, Bausch & Lomb 5x7 Tessar 1c f/4.5, New Guy negative collodion (1 month old), Silver Sunbeam developer recipe, glass negative
f/8, 2 minutes
New Guy negative collodion has over twice as many iodide salts than bromide salts. Perhaps that explains the much greater dynamic range compared to the negative (accidentally) made with positive collodion.
I also think I should have used a modern negative developer recipe. The 1874 Silver Sunbeam recipe is almost the same as a lot of positive recipes just with added alcohol and much more acid as a restrainer. Still with that much iron, developing needed to be stoped at around 30 seconds. Way too short.
Vehicles like this one are commonly referred to as 'utes' here in Australia.
"A ute, originally an abbreviation for "utility" or "coupé utility", is a term used in Australia and New Zealand to describe vehicles with a tray behind the passenger compartment, that can be driven with a regular driver's license."

It was pretty overcast and foggy that day and the sky was pretty boring so I have improved it a bit in the Elements 9, but are not completely satisfied with the foreground. But it is a nice place and I hope that in the future I may come back and try again to get the perfect result :)
In an effort to improve my photography I have been working on macro work. This is one of my favourite sweets, candies a licorice allsorts and I got a close up before I ate it:-0
Our Daily Challenge ... You can quote me on that!
Eating carrots makes your eyesight better!
Everyone has heard the old wives tale that eating carrots improves your vision. The tale is said to be especially true for improving night vision. Although this sounds like just another way for adults to get their children to eat their vegetables, there actually is some truth to this. Although, whether or not eating carrots will stop the need for ever wearing glasses is doubtful.
The tale is based on the fact that carrots contain massive amounts of Beta-carotene. The Beta-carotene travels to the small intestine and there, it is transformed into Vitamin A. Vitamin A can be turned into the protein Rhodospin and this is a group of cells that is found in the retina that is very sensitive to light.
The tale started during World War II. The British used the tale to say that their soldiers who were trained in finding enemy planes were eating carrots to help them see the planes better. They made up the lie so that their invention of radar could remain secret, therefore, giving them an upper hand in the war.
Ventilation in the berthing spaces was inadequate, especially in ships operating in the Mediterranean or the South Pacific. Troops on board would sometimes use a bayonet to improve their personal ventilation, making it worse for everybody else downstream.
USS LST-325 is a decommissioned US Navy Landing Ship, Tank (LST), or tank landing ship. This is an ocean-going ship type developed in World War II (1939–1945) to carry tanks, vehicles, cargo, and troops and land them directly on an enemy shore without using docks or piers.
An LST had a flat keel that allowed the ship to be beached and stay upright. The bow had a large door that could open, deploy a ramp and unload or load vehicles.
LST-325 was built in 1942. After World War II service, she was decommissioned in 1946. She was transferred to Greece in 1964, serving in the Royal Hellenic Navy as RHS Syros until 1999. Syros is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. The following year, a volunteer crew returned her to the US, to launch her in a third career as a museum ship.
LST-325 is the last surviving fully operational WWII LST. She is based in Evansville, Indiana and visits other US ports each year. I visited this ship on October 29, 2019.
So I wanted to improve the back section of my Spinner but ended up re-building the entire model!
This version is much more accurate, featuring opening scissor doors, better shaping/scale and a custom decal for the license plate. I even built a display stand for it.
Wow, what a great year! We really improved a lot since the beginning of the year, and the experience has been amazing! We met a lot of great builders, made a lot of new friends, and most importantly, improved our building technique and photography skills! My first design in 2012. I had started this in late 2011, but recently found a base of this in my drawer, and improved the whole model a lot.
Picture is taken with my mobile camera, because my Nikon got some scratches on matrix, and I took it home.
Maybe I'll reupload the picture later..
When the 75th Anniversary Dorothy Gale doll came out, let’s just say doll collectors had some…. very unkind words for her face, especially her forehead/brow area, which I thought the same.
It wasn’t until I had one in my hands I realised the only reason why she looks so bad is because her eyebrows are almost nonexistent and the heavy eye make up made her eyes look more sunken in and emphasises her brow sculpt really badly.
After giving her actual eyebrows I think she looks perfect now which is funny cuz I was going to change some other bits about her face but they look better now her eyebrows are visible.
A soldiers demonstrates the new L129A1 rifle nicknamed Sharpshooter.
The rifle will improve the long-range firepower available on the front line.
It fires a 7.62mm round and will enhance accuracy of engagement during longer-range firefights. This weapon will be used by some of the best shots in the Infantry.
More than 400 of the semi-automatic Sharpshooter rifles have been bought as a £1.5M Urgent Operational Requirement. It is the first new Infantry combat rifle to be issued to troops for more than 20 years.
The Sharpshooter complements the already potent range of weapons used by our forces in Afghanistan.
Training on the rifles began in January 2010 and the first batch will be sent to Afghanistan later in the year.

My goal this week was to try and improve upon my "winter" photo from last week. I wanted to try doing this by using the suggestions and helpful hints that were so generously shared with me last week. We had three days of nearly continuous snow and a couple cloudy days but I did manage to get out several times to get some photos taken. Onyx was very cooperative and patient so it definitely made it easier for me to make changes, try different settings, and take a multitude of photos. If I had been able to go down into the field to use the angle of the sun to my advantage it would have been much easier but the limitations of my wheelchair made it so this wasn't possible. As it was, the sun was either behind Onyx or beside her so it made limiting the shadows on her face a bit challenging. I guess I'll just need to get a 4-wheel drive wheelchair :)
There was a photo that I took earlier this week that is probably a bit better of Onyx but it was taken on a cloudy day and I really wanted to get one on a sunny day. There was also a head shot of her that I loved and could have easily used as my submission but I made myself stay with my goal. Both are in my photostream if you want to see them. As a last attempt at getting a photo to use, since I wasn't happy with my previous sunny day ones from the past couple days, I went outside with Onyx this afternoon to shoot a few more. This was the best of the ones I got but am sure there are probably still more ways for improvement.
Again, constructive criticism and helpful hints are gratefully accepted. I joined this group in hopes of improving my very beginner photography skills and to challenge myself to try some photos that were outside of my comfort zone. In the past couple weeks I have learned more about my camera and photography than I had in the whole previous year of owning my camera but I still have LOTS more to learn :) I think it will be a work in progress for a very long time but also lots of fun for both me and Onyx :) Thanks for the generous sharing of information - it has been very helpful and greatly appreciated.
Dear friends,
Thank you for your kind and valuable comments. I have now increase contrast, crop the top and post in color. The lady is still not sharp? What do you guys think of this version? Once again, please comments/critique, so I know how to improve further. Many many thanks! Have a great Monday!

Improving Access to Legal Services
In the Kyrgyz Republic, the registration of children at birth is absolutely essential to ensure that they can receive basic government services like access to public education or health care. However, according to UNICEF, there are more than 18,000 so-called “invisible” children under the age of 5 in Kyrgyzstan who do not have birth certificates. Until recently, this included Avaz, a 10-year-old boy from Tokmok, who was delivered at home by his father, and given a medical note by a doctor from a local clinic. At age 7, when Avaz faced being barred from school without a copy of his official birth certificate, a lawyer from a USAID-supported Free Legal Aid Center stepped in and assisted the family. After three different court hearings, Avaz finally received it, and is now a full member of society. Since 2016, over 132,000 people have received free legal assistance from one of the 25 USAID-supported Free Legal Aid Centers, which in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, is improving access to justice among vulnerable populations. /Max Shubovich.
Llandudno station has suffered somewhat in the last 30 years or so, back in the last days of 25's and 40's on holiday trains along the coast, we're talking perhaps 1982/83, the LNWR station still had it's full trainshed roof.
Come the late 80's it was chopped back, there was further removal over the next decade, the place was basically left to fall down. There was talk over several years in the mid to late noughties of restoration, building a new transport interchange, tarting it all up, but it came to nought.
Then in 2012, Network Rail, Arriva Trains Wales, the Welsh Assembly and Conwy Council found a pot of gold under a tree or something. £5.2 million later, and whilst Llandudno station is still only a shadow of it's former self, at least it's a tidy and decidedly more welcoming shadow.
It's 10pm on a Saturday. All the place needs in this picture is passengers and trains. Alas the last train out is at 2144...

My 2013 Classic Rapunzel Doll has been completely deboxed. She is standing, supported by a Kaiser doll stand (not included with the doll), and is photographed from various angles.
The 2013 Classic Rapunzel doll has many differences from the 2012 model, and is a greatly improved doll. She is both more attractive and more movie accurate. The major changes are to her head and face, her dress and her legs. There are a minor changes to her hair and she is now barefoot. The only features that haven't changed are her torso and arms. I still prefer the 2011 Classic Rapunzel doll's face. Of course the original 2010 Classic Rapunzel doll has a far superior dress and hair and several accessories. The 2010 doll is still available, repackaged as the 2011 Parks Rapunzel doll, in Disneyland Anaheim as of June 23, 2013.
Her head has been redesigned to be rounder than last year's doll. She has a larger forehead, larger eyes, more pronounced cheekbones, fuller cheeks, wider mouth that still has a smirk, and a smaller chin. Her small nose is slightly straighter, so there is no pronounced knob at the end.
Her face is similar to last years, but with many small changes. Her eyes are wider than before, so they are larger and more oval. Her big green eyes are still glancing to her right, but the pupils are larger, the color is darker, and the whites are larger. She no longer looks like she is glancing to the right but still staring straight ahead (which was a creepy look for the 2012 doll to have). Instead, she looks like she is gracefully looking towards her right. She has two short, thick lashes over the corner of her right eye and three over her left. She has no eyeshadow. Her light brown eyebrows are slightly lighter in color, and closer to her eyes. Her freckles are in a slightly different pattern, and are slightly darker. The rouge on her face is a little darker, and also extends across the middle of her nose. Her closed mouth is a little wider and forms a smirk as before, but her pink lips are now darker and more purple. Overall, her face is much more attractive, feminine and lively, as well as being more movie accurate.
Her golden blonde hair is about 11 inches long, so doesn't quite reach the floor. It is about an inch shorter than the hair on the 2012 Rapunzel, which actually dragged on the floor. It is still straight and free flowing. Right out of the box it is easy to make even by shaking it out, but isn't quite as smooth as the 2012 doll. But it was very easy to comb it to make it smoother and more even. There is a pronounced ridge of hair over her forehead that is fixed in place with gel, so it is quite stiff. The ridge makes her face more open than the 2012 doll, which also helps her appearance. The rest of her hair is soft, smooth and shiny.
The dress is similar in design as the 2012 doll, but is now much more attractive and movie accurate. Her satin bodice is now pink rather than dark purple, with pink corset lacing and a V-shaped waist. She has short puffy satin sleeves with pink and purple stripes. Her purple satin skirt is overlayed with a glittering floral pattern, with a center section that is plain purple satin. This is a switch from the movie version, where the floral pattern was in the central pink panel. However, it is much improved over the purple satin skirt of the 2012 doll, with no central panel, and the glitter in a random spray pattern. The skirt is the same length as before, a couple of inches off the floor. Missing are the sheer pink sleeve extensions on the dresses of the 2012 and earlier versions.
Her body is fully articulated in the arms, but now has the rubber legs of 2011 and earlier dolls, which has internal knee joints and fixed angled feet. Her hip joints allow her to sit down with her legs together and her back straight up, unlike the 2012 doll with the fully articulated but defective legs. But her knees can only bend about 40 degrees, so her legs stick out when she is sitting. The leg joints are also much stiffer, so she is in a much more natural position when placed standing in a Kaiser doll stand. Her angled rubber feet also make her about 1/4 inch taller than the 2012 doll, who had flat feet. I'm glad that she is now barefoot, as she was throughout the original movie. I'd say that the rubber legs are definitely a big improvement, except that glitter tends to stick to them.
The packaging for the dolls is much improved. The box art has been completely redesigned, with beautiful decorations unique to each Princess (actually for each movie), and a cameo of the animated movie character. Rapunzel's artwork has a purple background and includes images of the Sun and her hairbrush. The boxes are the same height and width, but are 1/2'' flatter, making them smaller and lighter.
The 2013 Disney Princess Classic Doll Collection, released on June 10, 2013. They consist of 11-12'' articulated dolls of the 11 official Disney Princesses, from Snow White to Merida, as well as Princes, Villains and Sidekicks. I now have all 11 Princesses, Queen Elinor, Charlotte and Gaston. I will photograph them boxed, during deboxing and fully deboxed. I will also post reviews and comparative photos.

Many people in Vancouver were given a second chance to photograph a re-lit Olympic Cauldron for two days.
The new pool underneath and internal lights that change colours are fantastic improvements. This is the image that visitors from all over the world should ideally have been able to to bring back home with them.

I posted this same photo yesterday, but a comment made by Charles Chapman made me take a second and real hard look. (Thanks Charles!) The color balance was not accurate and it made it look like the snow was falling from clear blue skies, when in fact they were heavily cloud covered with some faint hints of clearing on the horizon. In my opinion this is a much better image. What do you think?

"Leena Nio’s (b. 1982) new paintings are all about layers -– both physically and symbolically. Layering has always been Nio’s signature technique, but this time the concept is taken to the next level. Nio experiments with a new technical idiosyncrasy in each of her exhibitions, with each painting taking its cue from a minor, commonplace occurrence. The mundanity leaves plenty of room for both the painting process and the viewer’s interpretations to unfold freely.
Like many peers of her generation, Nio collected stickers and Victorian die-cuts in her childhood. These “stickers” have now found their way into her paintings. The glossy, lacquered pictorial elements hovering on the surface of the canvas are – despite being hand-painted – deceptively reminiscent of stickers or die-cuts. They are like emojis added to a text message. Or Instagram posts with added stickers and filters. The paintings in the exhibition achieve the same effect: using 21st-century tools, they take the message to the next level. With her add-on flourishes, Nio also self-reflexively comments on her process. Often finding it difficult to know when to finish a painting, she adds the final sticker as if dotting an “i” or crossing a “t.”
The surplus layers add many possible interpretations to her paintings. Her paintings are timeless, yet the add-ons link them powerfully to the contemporary moment. Her work abounds in allusions to art history, starting with her conscious decision to leave exposed patches of the raw, unpainted linen canvas, a device often used in classical painting. The irresistible union of historical allusions and stickers creates a clever conceptual and visual interplay of ideas.
After earning a master’s degree in visual arts from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Nio was awarded the Finnish Art Society’s Ducat Prize in 2010. In 2021 she will complete a large-scale public artwork for Finnoo station on Helsinki’s new Länsimetro subway line. Also coming up this year is a multidisciplinary piece for the Espoo Museum of Modern Art EMMA to be completed together with her husband, Kalle Nio. Nio’s work is found in significant Finnish collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection, and the Sara Hildén Art Museum."
I'm not trying hard
I'm not improving
I'm not hoping
I'm not growing
I'm not getting better
I'm not wishing well
And
I will quit
I won't start over
I won't do my best
I won't try again
I won't be pleased
I won't slow down
I should slow down
And
I will quit
I will go away
I will give up
I will hide
I'll remain silent
I'll be invisible
I am invisible
I will screw it all
Did I screw it all?
And
Will I quit?
Florida reef fish anglers have requested that the FWC create a system to improve reef fish recreational data collection so that data are more accurate, precise, timely and more in-line with what is happening on the water. By participating in the Gulf Reef Fish Survey, anglers are improving recreational data for several reef fish species such as red snapper and gag grouper (pictured). The process is easy and no-cost and will help the FWC paint a clearer picture of how many people are targeting Gulf reef fish like red snapper and gag and what they are seeing and harvesting. This Flickr set includes photos of all the reef fish species that are being targeted during this survey.
