In an effort to improve fuel efficiency, NASA and the aircraft industry are rethinking aircraft design. Inside the 8’ x 6’ wind tunnel at NASA Glenn, engineers recently tested a fan and inlet design, commonly called a propulsor, which could use four to eight percent less fuel than today’s advanced aircraft.
The new propulsor is designed to be embedded in the aircraft’s body, where it would ingest the slower flowing air that normally develops along an aircraft’s surface, called boundary layer, and use it to help propel the aircraft.
The tests showed that the new fan and inlet design could withstand the turbulent boundary layer airflow and increase efficiency. Results of the tests can be applied to cutting-edge aircraft designs that NASA and its partners are pursuing.

Another bash at improving my product photography. This time with an additional prop. I still have a long way to go before I'm happy. I'm limited these days by space so everything is done in a Heath Robinson fashion! I'd love a proper studio with proper lights instead of standing on one leg whilst holding foamboard, diffusers, flashes and remote controls!
I've had to comp together the bottle and the glass. This lighting effect could not be achieved in a single shot.
I've used as single YN560IV speedlight. For the bottle: Flash in a 24" double diffused softbox to the rear. Approx. 18" away. A further diffuser was used just behind the bottle to give a more gradated rim light. This hasn't quite had the effect I wanted! I cut from a piece of black foamboard a slightly larger shape of the bottle and placed this behind. Then 2 larger pieces of black foamboard placed left and right of subject to control the glare from the softbox. Speedlight triggered via YN560TX Full power @ 24mm. I then used the same flash with a Rogue grid attachment to light the label. 1/128 @ 24mm.
The glass was filled with water and a few drops of red food colouring. Same set up as the bottle but with a much lower flash power. 1/32 @ 24mm.
PP included masking the label frame into the bottle then compositing it with the glass. I'm quite comfortable with the camera/flash aspect of these shoots but PS work still blows my mind.....
I also need to inspect my purchases closer for wonky damaged labels. Hope it tastes ok tho :)
Still, it's much better than sat in front of the gogglebox having your brain fogged by a soap opera!
I went back to the drawing board and tried to improve on the first version...I don't know if it works better.
For years Larry has been on a mission to build the ultimate beach wagon.
He's built several different prototypes through the years, before coming up with the ultimate design!
Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.

Formerly known as strip-headed tanager, this is not an easy bird to see in North American, Your best chance to see this fellow is around Holguin of Cuba.
After an hour of hiding from the rain and strong winds the clouds started to clear. I was hoping for a rainbow or two looking towards Chrome Hill; there's always another time for me and my shadow to visit
I've been playing in Photoshop with my favorite photo. I tried adding the Orton effect to see how it would look. I thought it would just make it look blurry and crappy. Surprisingly, I loved it. This photo has such a magical, painterly quality, I think the Orton effect really enhances that. People have always thought this photo looks like a painting. They probably think that because, this photo does look like a painting. And... Once again... As I said in my description of the original version. This picture was not majorly Photoshopped. I did some darkening of the sky. Increased contrast in the rocks, and got rid of some people walking around the lighthouse... And... Now I added the Orton effect. If you printed the negative in a darkroom, it would look pretty much like this.
Here's the original.
Improved version of the 500C/M.
Following the design principle of the previous models, the Victor Hasselblad AB made the V-series completely modular: Not only the lenses, but also the winding crank, the viewfinder and the film magazine are exchangeable during normal operation of the camera. With the introduction of the 500C/M, also the focussing screen became easily exchangeable. The 500C/M was also sold as the Hasselblad 500 Classic bundle that included a 80mm lens and A12 film back.
i made a little box to attach to the mamiya back. a tripod mount was the major improvement here. i'll be testing it this week...
This LEAST BITTERN is one of the most difficult North American marsh birds to spot. Despite its inconspicuousness, however, the species can be rather common within appropriate habitat in its breeding range....All About Birds
He is the smallest member of the North American Heron family.

Lewis Falls, of the Lewis River (Scenic Segment), that pours out of Lewis Lake, is named for Meriwether Lewis, of Lewis & Clark Fame. Very recentlly the Park Service wisely invested in major improvements to the viewing areas and added a short, safe trail to overlooks such as this one. As a result my estimation of this small beauty spot has also improved. Lovely fall colors certainly add to the appeal as well. As always, I recommend viewing full screen if you can.
My friend Mao and myself was looking for Bobwhites on a farm field in Holguin of Cuba a couple of days ago and found this lone SHORT-EARED OWL instead.
Patches has improved even more! He has started back on his heart medication about a week and half ago. I had stopped his meds because it was causing him more distress than necessary. But since he seemed to have rebounded, I tried again with Pill Pockets (I treat these as a very special treat) and Patches is doing very well. He is back to napping with me in the afternoon. He is walking much better. And he is top cat once again, where he belongs.
Rework of my 2009 picture Sailing Moonward. This one is much improved visually, and the ship is still sailing moonward. In fact, it hasn't moved since 2009. No wind, I guess even though the sails look full. Maybe the ship is grounded. I'll post a followup in another 12 years....so check back then.

The outlook of Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar Road Bridge from the viewing area car park on the Devon side of the River Tamar has been improved by the lopping of the trees behind the contractors compound, which previously obscured the view. Also, it looks like at long last, the contractors compound is being wound down, and hopefully it, too, will disappear in time. A visit by the chain saw to the bushes on the left would not come amiss, either, but at least, the view of Brunel's masterpiece is again there to be enjoyed. I always like to improve my building techniques, so i tried my hands on a new water technique for my recent build.
In general it's the normal trans tiles + different shades of grey underground -technique, but now flowing.
To get this effect it needs a LOT of tiles and nearly twice as much 1x1 Tiles with clip.
One clip always hold two tiles together.
Using the usual tolerance of the bricks it's possible to bend the plain water into waves.
With her Improved Reach Kitten Managed to Decorate our Light tree all by herself! WOW Those really do come in Handy lol
I originally took this image in the spring of 2011. Nearly 2 years later, in the hope that my post processing skills have improved Ive decided to revamp it.
An improved version of this is now available as a print from theprintspace art.tt/hwf
This photograph has taken on a life of its own. I say this because it is viewed by many people every day.
The shot was taken on a very windy day in the backyard of my old house with my first DSLR and prime macro lens. What surprises me is that despite the dandelion being blown about by the wind (and being a handheld shot (I was on my hands and knees)) the central detail is so clear!
So, if you are one of the people who have viewed and enjoyed this, since it was first shared on flickr, please accept my thanks and gratitude.
Like ALL of my photographs this is © stephen cotterell photography so please do not use this without my express permission. If it is for your personal blog I am more than likely to say yes but please check. If you want it for any kind of commercial activity (including your internal powerpoint presentation) then you need to pay me BEFORE use. I feel sure that you understand.

Isn't it wonderful that nobody need waste a single moment to improve the world.
This wall was exposed shortly after the earthquake of 22 February. It will have been removed from sight by now after a new building has gone up.
Mandy is feeling a lot better than she was. She's still not at her normal "fighting" weight but she gained a bit of weight last week and her appetite is improving so I anticipate more good news when we take her to the vet on Thursday to get her second B12 shot. In addition to pancreatitis she has something going on in her small intestine so her B12 is low. It could just be IBS or IBD (yes, cat's get that especially if they eat dry food) - we have an ultrasound scheduled for 4/1 to make sure that there is nothing else going on in there. She has much more energy than she did and seems to feel better all around. She's still not a fan of getting medicine, whether a pill or a transdermal cream (on her ear). Thanks for your thoughts and prayers for Mandy - they helped. Have a great day!
