I'm sharing here on Flickr a (long) series of photos, taken in early August this year, during a short vacation in Calabria, at a holiday village located near a beach I've been frequenting with my family for several years now, during our short summer vacations. The setting, however, is very different from the beaches I normally frequent near my home in Taormina, with very crowded beaches and a sea that is also very popular with yachtsmen of all kinds. In this part of Calabria, the beaches are rarely crowded (except on weekends, but not too much). In short, it's a sort of almost tropical paradise, with very little yachting. Adjacent to the holiday village is a kitesurfing club, very popular with enthusiasts of this wonderful sport, which thrives on the sea and the wind. I photographed an 84-year-old kitesurfer, whose mettle is steely, still giving athletes much younger than him a run for their money. A friendly and sweet horsewoman from the nearby stables arrived unexpectedly in the beach village, accompanied by her father, both astride two magnificent colts. This created a moment of joy and curiosity for both the parents and their little ones, who were likely seeing these magnificent and docile animals up close and personal for the first time. Unexpectedly, a very special party broke out on the beach. Seeing it made me feel like I was no longer in Calabria, but rather transported to the other side of the globe, to the Hindu festival called Holi, with its throwing of colored powders (in India, this festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, as well as symbolizing the victory of good over evil). I know it thanks to the evocative photographs often published on various photography websites.
I'll end by briefly mentioning the photographic technique I've often used in my photographs. I've created "blur" photographs—blurry, slightly blurry, and unfocused—at the time of shooting, simply by lengthening the exposure time and then also using some panning. Finally, I'd like to thank the sweet and beautiful models who posed for me, allowing me to further enhance this (long-winded) photographic story.

Propongo qui su Flickr, una (lunga) serie di foto, realizzate nei primi giorni di Agosto di quest’anno, durante una mia breve vacanza in Calabria, in un villaggio vacanze sito a ridosso di una spiaggia che oramai frequento insieme alla mia famiglia, durante le nostre brevi vacanze estive, da diversi anni, fotografie quindi aventi per tema la “beach photography”; purtuttavia l’ambientazione è molto diversa rispetto alle spiagge che frequento normalmente vicino casa mia a Taormina, con spiagge molto affollate, il mare anch’esso super frequentato da diportismo nautico di ogni tipo, in questa zona della Calabria le spiagge sono invece poco frequentate (tranne il fine settimana, ma neanche troppo), insomma, una specie di Paradiso quasi tropicale, con pochissime imbarcazioni. Adiacente al villaggio vacanze c’è un club di Kitesurf, molto frequentato da appassionati di questo meraviglioso sport, sport che si nutre di mare e di vento. Ho fotografato un kitesurfer di 84 anni, la cui tempra è di acciaio, che dà ancora molto filo da torcere ad atleti molto più giovani di lui. Nel villaggio a sorpresa è arrivata una simpatica e dolce cavallerizza proveniente dal vicino maneggio, con lei anche il suo papà, entrambi a cavallo di due magnifici puledri, creando un momento di allegria e curiosità, sia per i genitori, che per i loro piccoli, per i quali, molto probabilmente, era la prima volta che potevano vedere da vicino, e poterli anche toccare, questi magnifici e docili animali. A sorpresa, inaspettatamente, sulla spiaggia ha preso vita un party molto particolare, nel vederlo mi sembrava di non essere più in Calabria, ma di essere stato proiettato dall’altro lato del globo, in quella festa Indù chiamata Holi, con lancio di polveri colorate (in India questa festa segna la fine dell'inverno e l'arrivo della primavera, oltre a simboleggiare la vittoria del bene sul male), festa che conosco grazie a fotografie molto suggestive spesso pubblicate sui vari siti fotografici.
Termino accennando brevemente alla tecnica fotografica che ho spesso adottato nel realizzare le mie fotografie, ho realizzato al momento dello scatto fotografie del tipo “blur”, cioè mosse, un po’ confuse, non incise, ottenute allungando i tempi di esposizione. Infine ringrazio le dolcissime e belle modelle, che hanno voluto posare per me, consentendomi di rendere più grazioso questo mio (prolisso) racconto fotografico.

Blonde and utterly beautiful Mary Nolan (1902–1948) appeared on stage, on screen, and most of all in the tabloids. After a 'sex scandal', she fled to Germany where she starred in 17 silent films under her real name, Imogene Robertson.
Mary Nolan was born Mary Imogene Robertson in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. in 1902 (according to Wikipedia and 1905 according to IMDb). She was one of five children born to Africanus and Viola Robertson. Her mother died of cancer at the age of 46. Unable to care for five young children, Africanus Robertson placed Mary in a foster home. She eventually went to live in a Catholic orphanage in Missouri where she earned the nickname 'Bubbles'. The beautiful blonde arrived broke in New York in 1919. Eve Golden at Films of the Golden Age: "She really was breathtaking with her perfect bone structure, a cloud of thick blonde hair, and china-blue eyes. It wasn't long before Mary got work as an artist's model for such big shots as James Montgomery Flagg and Arthur William Brown." Famous Broadway producer Oliver Morosco launched her stage career in the choruses of Daffy Dill and Lady Butterfly (1923). Bubbles proved to be a Jazz-Age baby and a party girl by nature. Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. signed her up for his Follies shows on Broadway. As a showgirl, she performed under the stage name Imogene 'Bubbles' Wilson. For the next several years, she started a violent love/hate relationship with Ziegfeld comedian Frank Tinney. Tinney was married to the comedy star Edna Davenport. Tinney set Mary up in a West 72nd Street apartment and showered her with expensive gifts, but he also showered her with bruises, both physical and emotional. The abusive affair stirred up a major sex scandal in 1924. The tabloids exposed the tumultuous relationship when Mary was seriously hospitalised after one of their many arguments. Mary was fired by Ziegfeld and set sail for France where she was scheduled to appear in vaudeville. She made her way to London in October where she reunited with Frank Tinney. By December 1924, Tinney had resumed drinking and began to physically abuse her again. In early 1925, Nolan finally ended the relationship. She then travelled to Germany where she began to work in the film industry under the new stage name Imogene Robertson. Her first German film was Verborgene Gluten/Hidden Fires (Einar Bruun, 1925) with Alphons Fryland. Later that year, she appeared in the title role of Die Feuertänzerin (Robert Dinesen, 1925) for the Ufa. She received good reviews for her work in the film which prompted the Ufa to offer her a contract for $1500 a week. Nolan worked steadily in Germany from 1925 to 1927 and continued to receive favourable reviews for her acting. Her best-known films include the mystery Das Parfüm der Mrs. Worrington/The Parfum of Mrs. Worrington (Franz Seitz, 1925) with Ernst Reicher as detective Stuart Webbs, Das süße Mädel/The sweet girl (Manfred Noa, 1926) with Nils Asther, and the drama Die Abenteuer eines Zehnmarkscheines/The adventures of a 10-mark note (Berthold Viertel, 1926).
While in Germany, Imogene Robertson received offers from Hollywood producers to appear in American films but turned them down. She finally relented after Joseph M. Schenck offered her a contract with United Artists. She returned to the United States in January 1927. To solve the problem of audiences connecting her with her scandalous past, United Artists suggested she change her name to Mary Nolan. For United Artists, she appeared in an uncredited bit part in Topsy and Eva (Del Lord, 1927), and a supporting role in Sorrell and Son (Herbert Brenon, 1927). In 1928, Nolan was signed to Universal Pictures. Her first film for the company was Good Morning, Judge (William A. Seiter, 1928), starring Reginald Denny for which she received good reviews. Universal loaned her out to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for West of Zanzibar (Tod Browning, 1928), about the vengefulness of a cuckolded magician (Lon Chaney) paralysed in a brawl with his rival (Lionel Barrymore). Nolan played Chaney's defiled daughter Maizie. The film was a hit and Nolan received favourable reviews for her work in the film. The following year, she was loaned to MGM again for the romantic drama Desert Nights (William Nigh, 1929), with John Gilbert. Two thieves (Noland and Ernest Torrence) victimize a diamond mine and kidnap its manager (Gilbert), but he gains the upper hand (and falls in love with Nolan) when they flee into the hostile desert. Desert Nights was another financial success and served to boost Nolan's career. Shortly after signing with Universal in 1927, Nolan had begun a relationship with another married man, studio executive Eddie Mannix. Mannix used his clout to further Nolan's career and was responsible for her loan outs to MGM. Shortly after Desert Nights was released in 1929, Mannix abruptly ended the relationship. This angered Nolan who threatened to tell Mannix's wife Bernice of their affair. Mannix became enraged and beat her unconscious. Nolan was hospitalised for six months and required fifteen surgeries to repair damage Mannix inflicted on her abdomen. While hospitalized, Nolan was prescribed morphine for pain. She eventually became addicted which contributed to the decline of her career. In the Universal production Young Desire (Lew Collins, 1930), Nolan plays Helen Herbert aka 'La Belle Helene', a carnival sideshow dancer. She falls in love with wealthy, wet-behind-the-ears Bobby Spencer who whisks her off to his hometown of Spencerville and stakes her to an apartment and a job. But Helen's sordid past catches up with her... By then, Nolan's acting career had begun to decline due to her drug abuse and reputation for being temperamental. She was fired from the film What Men Want (1930). Nolan got into an argument with the film's director, Ernst Laemmle after she learned she was the only cast member who hadn't received a close-up shot. Laemmle banned Nolan from the set and she was subsequently fired. After threatening to file a lawsuit against Universal, the studio bought her out of her contract in January 1931. She married stock broker Wallace T. McCreary on 29 March 1931. One week before they married, McCreary lost $3 million on bad investments. The couple used McCreary's remaining money to open a dress shop in Beverly Hills. The shop went out of business within months and Nolan filed for bankruptcy in August 1931. Nolan divorced McCreary in July 1932. After her exit from Universal, she was unable to secure film work with any of the major studios. Nolan spent the remainder of her acting career appearing in roles in low-budget films for independent studios. She made her final film appearances in File 113 (Chester M. Franklin, 1933), for Allied Pictures Corporation. From then on, Nolan appeared in vaudeville and performed in nightclubs and roadhouses around the United States. Later, Mary Nolan suffered several nervous breakdowns and her health declined. She turned to heroin, and it spelt the end. In 1948, she died of cardiac arrest and liver problems (according to IMDb, but Wikipedia writes she died of a barbiturate overdose). American actress Meryl Streep (1949) is one of the best actresses of her generation, known for her versatility and accents.She has been nominated for the Oscar an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Among her other accolades, she has received 32 Golden Globe nominations, more than any other person, and won eight.
Mary Louise 'Meryl' Streep was born in 1949, in Summit, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Mary Wilkinson Streep (née Mary Wolf Wilkinson), a commercial artist and art editor; and Harry William Streep, Jr., a pharmaceutical executive. She has two younger brothers: Harry William Streep III and Dana David Streep, who are also actors. At the age of 12, Streep was selected to sing at a school recital, leading to her having opera lessons from Estelle Liebling. She quit after four years. Although Streep appeared in numerous school plays during her high school years, she was uninterested in serious theatre until acting in the play Miss Julie at Vassar College in 1969, in which she gained attention across the campus. She received her B.A. cum laude from the college in 1971, before applying for an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. Streep played a variety of roles on stage, from Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream to an 80-year-old woman in a wheelchair in a comedy written by then-unknown playwrights Christopher Durang and Albert Innaurato. She received her MFA from Yale in 1975. That year, Streep made her stage debut in New York in Trelawny of the Wells by Arthur Wing Pinero. The following year, she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play for appearing in the 1976 double bill of '27 Wagons Full of Cotton' by Tennessee Williams and 'A Memory of Two Mondays' by Arthur Miller. She made her screen debut in the television film The Deadliest Season (Robert Markowitz, 1977), a sports drama with Michael Moriarty. Her film debut was the award-winning Holocaust drama Julia (Fred Zinnemann, 1977), starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave. It is based on a chapter from Lillian Hellman's book Pentimento about the author's relationship with a lifelong friend, 'Julia,' who fought against the Nazis in the years prior to World War II. Streep had a small role during a flashback sequence. She received her first Oscar nomination for the epic war drama The Deer Hunter (Michael Cimino, 1978). Critic Pauline Kael remarked that she was a "real beauty" who brought much freshness to the film with her performance. The film, starring Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, was also successful at the box office, grossing $49 million. She also won an Emmy Award for her role in the miniseries Holocaust (Marvin J. Chomsky, 1978), which recounts the trajectory of the Holocaust from the perspectives of the fictional Weiss family of German Jews and that of a rising member of the SS (Michael Moriarty), who gradually becomes a merciless war criminal. Streep travelled to Germany and Austria for filming while her partner, actor John Cazale, who had been diagnosed with lung cancer, remained in New York. Upon her return, Streep found that Cazale's illness had progressed, and she nursed him until his death in March 1978. Streep starred opposite Dustin Hoffman in the legal drama Kramer vs. Kramer (Robert Benton, 1979). It tells the story of a couple's (Streep and Dustin Hoffmann) divorce, its impact on their young son (Justin Henry), and the subsequent evolution of their relationship and views on parenting. For Kramer vs. Kramer, Streep won both the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, which she famously left in the ladies' room after giving her speech.
Meryl Streep's first leading role was in the British romantic drama The French Lieutenant's Woman (Karel Reisz, 1981), a story within a story drama. The film paired Streep with Jeremy Irons as contemporary actors, telling their modern story, as well as the Victorian era drama they were performing. She got an Oscar nomination for her performance. Streep won the Oscar for Best Actress for Sophie's Choice (Alan J. Pakula, 1982). Streep was very determined to get the role. After obtaining a bootlegged copy of the script, she went after Pakula, and threw herself on the ground, begging him to give her the part. She portrayed a Polish survivor of Auschwitz, caught in a love triangle between a young naïve writer (Peter MacNicol) and a Jewish intellectual (Kevin Kline). Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote: "Though it's far from a flawless movie, 'Sophie's Choice' is a unified and deeply affecting one. Thanks in large part to Miss Streep's bravura performance, it's a film that casts a powerful, uninterrupted spell." In 1983, Streep played her first non-fictional character, the nuclear whistleblower and labor union activist Karen Silkwood, who died in a suspicious car accident while investigating alleged wrongdoing at the Kerr-McGee plutonium plant, in Mike Nichols' biographical drama Silkwood (Mike Nichols, 1983) with Cher. Then she portrayed a fighter for the French Resistance during World War II in the British drama Plenty (Fred Schepisi, 1985), adapted from the play by David Hare. Her next release, the epic romantic drama Out of Africa (Sydney Pollack, 1985), established her as a Hollywood superstar. In the film, Streep starred as the Danish writer Karen Blixen, opposite Robert Redford's Denys Finch Hatton. It earned her another Oscar nomination. Karina Longworth notes in 'Meryl Streep: Anatomy of an Actor' (2013) that the dramatic success of Out of Africa led to a backlash of critical opinion against Streep in the years that followed, especially as she was now demanding $4 million a picture. Unlike other stars at the time, such as Sylvester Stallone and Tom Cruise, Streep "never seemed to play herself", and certain critics felt her technical finesse led people to literally see her acting.
Meryl Streep's other Oscar-nominated roles were in Ironweed (Héctor Babenco, 1987) with Jack Nicholson, the Australian drama Evil Angels/A Cry in the Dark (Fred Schepisi, 1988), the comedy-drama Postcards from the Edge (Mike Nichols, 1990) with Shirley MacLaine, the romantic drama The Bridges of Madison County (Clint Eastwood, 1995), One True Thing (Carl Franklin, 1998) with Renee Zellweger, the musical drama Music of the Heart (Wes Craven, 1999), Adaptation (Spike Jonze, 2002) starring Nicholas Cage, the comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada (David Frankel, 2006) with Anne Hathaway, the period drama Doubt (John Patrick Shanley, 2008), the comedy-drama Julie & Julia (Nora Ephron, 2009) with Amy Adams, August: Osage County (John Wells, 2013) with Julia Roberts, the musical fantasy Into the Woods (Rob Marshall, 2014), the biographical comedy-drama Florence Foster Jenkins (Stephen Frears, 2016) with Hugh Grant, and the historical political thriller The Post (Steven Spielberg, 2017), starring Tom Hanks. Streep won the Best Actress Oscar again for The Iron Lady (Phyllida Lloyd, 2011), the British-French biographical drama based on the life and career of Margaret Thatcher. While the film was met with mixed reviews, Streep's performance was widely acclaimed, and considered to be one of the greatest of her career. Her stage roles include The Public Theater's 2001 revival of 'The Seagull', and her television roles include two projects for HBO, the acclaimed miniseries Angels in America (2003), for which her performance won her another Emmy Award, and the drama series Big Little Lies (2019). Streep has also been the recipient of many honorary awards. She was awarded Commander of the Order of the Arts and Letters by French culture minister Jean-Jacques Aillagon in 2003. In the cinema, she appeared as Emmeline Pankhurst, a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement who helped women win the right to vote in the period drama Suffragette (Sarah Gavron, 2015), co-starring Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter. Streep reprised the role of Donna Sheridan in the musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Ol Parker, 2018). She also played a supporting part in Mary Poppins Returns (Rob Marshall, ), starring Emily Blunt in the title role. In 2019, she starred in the biographical comedy The Laundromat (Steven Soderberg, 2019), the first Netflix film in which Streep starred. The film focused on the Panama Papers in particular and Beneficial ownership in general. Streep was whistleblower John Doe who released incriminating documents to the media. In addition, she played Aunt March in Little Women (Greta Gerwig, 2019). Despite her stardom, for decades Streep has managed to maintain a relatively normal personal life. Streep lived with actor John Cazale for three years until his death from lung cancer in March 1978. Streep married sculptor Don Gummer six months after Cazale's death. They have four children: one son and three daughters, son Henry Wolfe Gummer (1979), a musician; daughters Mary Willa 'Mamie' Gummer (1983), an actress; Grace Jane Gummer (1986), an actress; and Louisa Jacobson Gummer (1991), a model. In February 2019, Streep became a grandmother for the first time, through her eldest daughter Mamie.

Beach holidays were born in the 1700s in Great Britain, this social phenomenon was born in which bathers for the first time go to the beaches, certainly not as sunny as those bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, they are fully dressed; this "new fashion" is also encouraged by the belief of English doctors since the beginning of the eighteenth century (starting around 1720), that breathing the brackish sea air and bathing in cold sea water is healthy, invigorates the body and cure lung diseases (conviction even more strengthened by the discovery of oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier in 1778, which led to the greater diffusion and conviction of the theories on the health benefits of sea air, which was thought to be more oxygenated and pure), these theories push many people from Northern Europe suffering from severe lung diseases to spend long periods in southern Europe, often in the south of Italy, this explains why characters with extraordinary qualities come to Taormina to cure their tuberculosis. The photographer baron Wilhelm von Gloeden and the English lady Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan had the seawater brought with their mules from Isola Bella, but while W. Von Gloeden heated the sea water, the English noblewoman Lady Trevelian did not heat it, mindful of the teachings of the English medical school, this will cause her death from bronchopneumonia on 4 October 1907 (see my previous "photographic stories" about Taormina). In fact, "thalassotherapy" was born in Great Britain, together with the social and cultural phenomenon of frequenting bathing beaches (before the beginning of the 18th century, the sea and its beaches were lived, except for reasons of trade and fishing, in a dark and negative way, from the sea often came very serious dangers such as the sudden landings of ferocious pirates, or foreigners carrying very serious diseases could land). Thus the fashion of spending holidays by the sea was born in the English aristocracy and high bourgeoisie of the time, subsequently the habit of going to the sea spread to all levels of society, the railways that were built throughout Great Britain to 'beginning of the nineteenth century, made travel to the ocean accessible even to the lower classes, they too will frequent the seaside resorts, Blackpool becomes the first seaside resort in Great Britain completely frequented by the working classes thanks to the presence of low-cost bathing establishments; the great and definitive boom in seaside tourism will then take place in the 1950s and 1960s. An important photographer, who probably inspired subsequent photographers, was Tony Ray-Jones, who died prematurely in 1972, at the young age of 30, who was trying to create a “photographic memory” of the stereotypes of the English people; the famous photojournalist Martin Parr, who, although inspired by the previous one, differs from it for his way of doing “social satire” with his goal; finally, I would like to mention David Hurn and Simon Roberts, the latter with wider-ranging photographs, with photographs more detached from the individual. In Italy there are numerous photographers (I will mention only a few) who have made in their long career images captured in seaside resorts (generally we speaking of "beach photography" similar to "street photography"), photographs that are often unique in their style, such as that adopted by Franco Fontana, I mention Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (of whom I am honored to have known him personally), and Massimo Vitali, famous photographer (understood by some as "the photographer of the beaches"), especially for his beautiful photographs taken on the beaches (but not only), thanks to the presence of elevated fixed structures as a kind of mezzanine, built specifically in the bathing beaches for the realization of his photographs. This is my introduction to talk about the theme proposed here, that of “beach photography” (with some exceptions for “narrative” reasons), with a series of photographs taken on the beaches surrounding Taormina (Sicily). For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, in addition to capturing the surrounding space, it also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being blurry because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused-out of focus-imprecise-undecided... the Anglo-Saxon term that encapsulates this photographic genre in a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created later, in the post-production phase.

Le vacanze al mare nascono nel ‘700 in Gran Bretagna, nasce questo fenomeno sociale nel quale i bagnanti per la prima volta si recano sulle spiagge, non certo assolate come quelle bagnate dal mar Mediterraneo, sono completamente vestiti; questa “nuova moda” è anche incoraggiata dalla convinzione dei medici inglesi fin dall’inizio del ‘700 (a partire dal 1720 circa), che respirare l’aria salmastra del mare e fare il bagno nell’acqua marina fredda sia salutare, rinvigorisca il corpo e curi le malattie polmonari (convinzione ancor più rafforzata dalla scoperta dell’ossigeno da parte di Antoine Lavoisier nel 1778, che portò alla maggiore diffusione e convinzione delle teorie sui benefici per la salute dell’aria di mare, che si pensava essere più ossigenata e pura), queste teorie spingono molte persone del Nord Europa affette da gravi malattie polmonari a trascorrere dei lunghi periodi nel sud Europa, spesso nel meridione d’Italia, questo spiega perché a Taormina giungono personaggi dalle qualità straordinarie per curare il proprio “mal sottile”, il barone fotografo Wilhelm von Gloeden e la lady inglese Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan si facevano portare coi muli l’acqua di mare proveniente dall’Isola Bella, però mentre W. Von Gloeden riscaldava l’acqua marina, la nobildonna inglese lady Trevelian non la riscaldava, memore degli insegnamenti della scuola medica inglese, questo causerà la sua morte per broncopolmonite il 4 ottobre del 1907 (vedi i miei precedenti “racconti fotografici” su Taormina). Infatti la “talassoterapia” nasce in Gran Bretagna, insieme al fenomeno sociale e culturale della frequentazione dei lidi balneari (prima dell’inizio del ‘700, il mare e le sue spiagge erano vissuti, tranne che per motivi di commercio e di pesca, in maniera oscura e negativa, dal mare spesso provenivano gravissimi pericoli come gli sbarchi improvvisi di feroci pirati, oppure potevano sbarcare stranieri portatori di gravissime malattie). Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate sulle spiagge circostanti Taormina (Sicilia). Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione

With his all-American good looks, Robert Redford (1936) was one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 1970s. In classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973) and All the President's Men (1976), he was the intelligent, reliable, sometimes sardonic good guy. He received two Oscars: one in 1981 for directing Ordinary People, and one for Lifetime Achievement in 2002. In 2010, the actor, director, producer, businessman, environmentalist, philanthropist, and co-founder of the Sundance Film Festival was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in France.
Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born in Santa Monica, California in 1936. His parents were Martha W. (Hart) and Charles Robert Redford, Sr., a milkman-turned-accountant. Redford's family moved to Van Nuys, California, while his father worked in El Segundo. He attended Van Nuys High School and was interested in art and sports. After high school, he attended the University of Colorado for a year and a half. He travelled in Europe but decided on a career as a theatrical designer in New York. Enrolling at the American Academy of Dramatic Art he turned to acting. In 1959, Redford's acting career began on stage, making his Broadway debut with a small role in Tall Story. It was followed by parts in The Highest Tree (1959) and Sunday in New York (1961). On TV, he appeared as a guest star on numerous programs, including Maverick (1960), Perry Mason (1960), The Twilight Zone (1962), and The Untouchables (1963). Redford earned an Emmy nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Voice of Charlie Pont (1962). Redford made his screen debut in War Hunt (Denis Sanders, 1962), set during the last days of the Korean War. This film also marked the acting debut of director Sydney Pollack, with whom Redford would collaborate on seven films. His biggest Broadway success was as the stuffy newlywed husband of Elizabeth Ashley in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park (1963). After this smash hit, he was cast in larger film roles. In the war comedy Situation Hopeless ... But Not Serious (Gottfried Reinhardt, 1965) with Alec Guinness, he played a soldier who has to spend years of his life hiding behind enemy lines. In Inside Daisy Clover (Robert Mulligan, 1965), he played a bisexual movie star who marries starlet Natalie Wood. It won him a Golden Globe for the best new star. A success was This Property Is Condemned (Sydney Pollack, 1966), again with Nathalie Wood. The same year saw he co-starred with Jane Fonda in The Chase (Arthur Penn, 1966), also with Marlon Brando. Fonda and Redford were paired again in the film version of Barefoot in the Park (Gene Saks, 1967) and were again co-stars much later in The Electric Horseman (Sydney Pollack, 1979).
After this initial success, Robert Redford became concerned about his stereotype image of the blond 'All American'. At the age of 32, he found the property he was looking for in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill, 1969), scripted by William Goldman. For the first time, he was teamed with Paul Newman and it was a huge success. The film made him a major bankable star. Other critical and box office hits were Jeremiah Johnson (Sydney Pollack, 1972), the hugely popular period drama The Way We Were (Sydney Pollack, 1973) with Barbra Streisand, and the blockbuster crime caper The Sting (George Roy Hill, 1973), the biggest hit of his career, for which he was also nominated for an Oscar. Between 1974 and 1976, exhibitors voted Redford as Hollywood's top box-office name with such hits as The Great Gatsby (Jack Clayton, 1974) and Three Days of the Condor (Sydney Pollack, 1975) with Faye Dunaway. The popular and acclaimed All the President's Men (Alan J. Pakula, 1976), directed by and scripted once again by Goldman, was a landmark film for Redford. Not only was he the executive producer and co-star, but the film's serious subject matter—the Watergate scandal—and its attempt to create a realistic portrayal of journalism, also reflected the actor's offscreen concerns for political causes. He also appeared in the war film A Bridge Too Far (Richard Attenborough, 1977) before starring in the prison drama Brubaker (Stuart Rosenberg, 1980), playing a prison warden attempting to reform the system, and the baseball drama The Natural (Barry Levinson, 1984). With his enormous salaries, he acquired Utah property, which he transformed into a ranch and the Sundance ski resort. In 1980, he established the Sundance Institute for aspiring filmmakers. Its annual film festival has now become one of the world's most influential.
Robert Redford continued his involvement in mainstream Hollywood movies, though with a newfound focus on directing. The first film he directed, Ordinary People (1980), which followed the disintegration of an upper-class American family after the death of a son, was one of the most critically and publicly acclaimed films of the decade, winning a number of Oscars, including the Academy Award for Best Director for Redford himself, and Best Picture. His follow-up directorial project, The Milagro Beanfield War (1987), failed to generate the same level of attention. Out of Africa (Sydney Pollack, 1985), with Redford and Meryl Streep, became an enormous critical and box office success and won seven Oscars including Best Picture. It was Redford's biggest success of the decade and Redford and Pollack's most successful film together. Redford continued as a major star throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Then, he starred in Indecent Proposal (Adrian Lyne, 1993) as a millionaire businessman who tests a couple's (Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson) morals. It became one of the year's biggest hits. His film Quiz Show (Robert Redford, 1994), starring Ralph Fiennes and Rob Morrow, earned him yet another Best Director nomination. He co-starred with Michelle Pfeiffer in the newsroom romance Up Close & Personal (Jon Avnet, 1996), and with Kristin Scott Thomas in The Horse Whisperer (1998), which he also directed. Redford also continued work in films with political contexts, such as Havana (Sydney Pollack, 1990), playing Jack Weil, a professional gambler in 1959 Cuba during the Revolution, as well as the caper Sneakers (Phil Alden Robinson, 1992), with River Phoenix. He reteamed with Brad Pitt for Spy Game (Tony Scott, 2001). Redford stepped back into producing with The Motorcycle Diaries (Walter Salles, 2004), a coming-of-age road film about a young medical student, Ernesto 'Che' Guevera, and his friend Alberto Granado. He reteamed with Meryl Streep 22 years after they starred in Out of Africa, for his personal project Lions for Lambs (Robert Redford, 2007), which also starred Tom Cruise. The film disappointed at the box office. Recently, he starred in All Is Lost (J.C. Chandor, 2013) about a man lost at sea. He received very high acclaim for his performance in the film, in which he is its only cast member and has almost no dialogue. Next, he appeared in the Marvel Studios superhero film Captain America: The Winter Soldier playing Alexander Pierce (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, 2014). More recently, he appeared in such films as A Walk in the Woods (Ken Kwapis, 2015) with Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson, Truth (James Vanderbilt, 2015) with Cate Blanchett, The Discovery (Charlie McDowell, 2017) with Mary Steenburgen, and Avengers: Endgame (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, 2019) with Robert Downey Jr. Between 1958 and 1985, Robert Redford was married to Lola Van Wagenen. I present here a “Sicilian Festival”, with images and words, which was held this year in what is a “scattered municipality”, since it is composed of the two hamlets of Mongiuffi and Melia, separated by a valley in which a river flows, close to the more famous Taormina; the festival is celebrated on Easter Monday, this year the festival, which began normally, was interrupted shortly after due to the arrival of the sad news of the Holy Father Francis, who passed away, so the festival was postponed and celebrated on Sunday 27 April. Historically, the news that I report here, briefly, are taken from the book written by the historian, researcher of popular traditions and photographer, Giovanni Curcuruto, title of the work "Monfelia" (ETNA printing house, OCTOBER 2006): this festival, initially called "Festa della Pace" (later indicated as "Festa degli Angeli"), was established by the Marquis Francesco Rao Corvaja in 1830, to try to bring harmony between the two villages, Mongiuffi and Melia, which had disagreed in the past years for trivial reasons. The festival was celebrated until 1843, the year in which the two villages argued again (the two communities argued as if they were stadium fans, one sided with the clergy, the other with the nobles), the festival was then suspended, and was only reinstated in 1929; the celebration when it was established required that forty days before Easter Monday, the two communities would gather in the church of San Sebastiano di Melia, to select eight children, four from Mongiuffi in honor of the Madonna, and four from Melia in honor of the Risen Christ, between ten and fifteen years old, on the day of the celebration they would then be dressed in white clothes and “wings”, embellished with ribbons and bows; the children were instructed to recite a text in Sicilian dialect mixed with Latin phrases, written in 1833 by the priest Giovanni Cuzari. On Easter Monday, the various brotherhoods had a lot to do preparing the ceremony; from the church of San Sebastiano di Melia, a procession of only men came out, the bearers carried the float with the Risen Christ on their shoulders, while from Mongiuffi a procession of only women set out, with their heads covered by a black veil, the float with the the Virgin of Sorrows was carried on their shoulders, a black veil covered her completely, leaving only her face uncovered, (underneath there was a white veil, which would have “appeared” at the moment of the encounter with the Risen Son): the two processions met in Melia (and still meet today), in an area called “’nto chianu di l’Angiuli” (the square of the Angels), in reality now it is little more than a narrow street: what happened in the past, still happens today (except that, the procession with the the Virgin of Sorrows no longer comes from Mongiuffi, but comes from Melia itself), the two processions coming from the two opposite directions, carrying the float with the the Virgin of Sorrows, and the one with the Risen Christ, stop one in front of the other. First there is a particular ceremony, two boys meet with their respective Crucifixes making three bows to each other, the same happens with two girls and then two men, with their banners, finally the highly emotional “Meeting” takes place between the Mother (the black cloak flies away, and the white one appears) with her Risen Son! Finally, hidden until then behind a curtain on a stage, there is the appearance of the children dressed as Angels, who undertake the traditional recitation. The historian, passionate about popular traditions, Giovanni Curcuruto, has always been close to the “little angels” having acted as director and choreographer, of this moving, very beautiful, “traditional Sicilian ceremony-festival”.

Presento qui una “Festa Siciliana”, con immagini e parole, che si è tenuta quest’anno in quello che è un “comune sparso”, poiché composto dalle due borgate di Mongiuffi e Melia, separate da una vallata nella quale scorre un fiume, vicine alla più conosciuta Taormina; la festa viene celebrata il giorno di Pasquetta (o Lunedì dell’Angelo), quest’anno la festa, iniziata normalmente, è stata poco dopo interrotta per l’arrivo della triste notizia del Santo Padre Francesco, venuto a mancare, quindi la festa è stata rinviata e celebrata domenica 27 aprile.
Storicamente le notizie che qui riporto, sinteticamente, sono tratte dal libro scritto dallo storico, ricercatore di tradizioni popolari e, fotografo, Giovanni Curcuruto, titolo dell’opera “Monfelia” (tipografia ETNA, OTTOBRE 2006): questa festa, chiamata inizialmente “Festa della Pace”, (poi indicata come “Festa degli Angeli”), fu istituita dal Marchese Francesco Rao Corvaja nel 1830, per tentare di portare armonia tra i due borghi, Mongiuffi e Melia, entrati in disaccordo negli anni passati per futili motivi, la festa fu celebrata fino al 1843, anno in cui i due borghi litigarono nuovamente, (le due comunità litigarono come se fossero tifoserie di stadio, una parteggiava per il clero, l’altra per i nobili), la festa venne quindi sospesa, e fu ripristinata solamente nel 1929; la festa quando venne istituita prevedeva che quaranta giorni prima del Lunedì di Pasqua, le due comunità si riunissero nella chiesa di San Sebastiano di Melia, per selezionare otto ragazzini, quattro di Mongiuffi in in onore della Madonna, e quattro di Melia in onore del Cristo Risorto, tra i dieci ed i quindici anni, il giorno della celebrazione sarebbero poi stati vestiti con abiti ed “ali” di colore bianco, impreziositi con nastri e fiocchetti; i ragazzini venivano istruiti a recitare un testo in dialetto siciliano misto a frasi in latino, scritto nel 1833 dal sacerdote Giovanni Cuzari. Il Lunedì dell’Angelo, le varie confraternite avevano un gran da fare per la preparazione della cerimonia; dalla chiesa di San Sebastiano di Melia, usciva una processione di soli uomini, i portatori recavano in spalla la vara col Cristo Risorto, mentre da Mongiuffi partiva una processione di sole donne, col capo coperto da un velo nero, veniva portata in spalla la vara con la Madonna Addolorata, un velo nero la copriva completamente, lasciandole scoperto solamente il volto, (sotto era presente un velo bianco, che sarebbe “apparso” nel momento dell’incontro col Figlio Risorto): le due processioni si incontravano a Melia (e si incontrano tutt’ora), in una zona chiamata “’nto chianu di l’Angiuli” (la piazza degli Angeli), in realtà adesso è poco più di una stretta stradina: quanto accadeva in passato, accade tutt’ora (tranne che, la processione con la Madonna Addolorata non proviene più da Mongiuffi, ma giunge dalla stessa Melia), le due processioni provenienti dalle due opposte direzioni, recanti la vara con la Madonna Addolorata, e quella col Cristo Risorto, si fermano una di fronta l’altra, dapprima
c’è una particolare cerimonia, due ragazzi si incontrano coi rispettivi Crocefissi facendosi l’un l’altro tre inchini, lo stesso accade con due ragazze e poi due uomini, con i loro stendardi, infine avviene “l’Incontro” altamente emozionante tra la Madre (vola via il mantello nero, ed appare quello bianco) col suo Figlio Risorto! Infine, nascosti fino ad allora dietro una tenda su di un palco, c’è l’apparizione dei ragazzini vestiti da Angeli, che intraprendono la recita tradizionale. Lo storico, appassionato di tradizioni popolari, Giovanni Curcuruto, è stato sempre accanto agli “angioletti” avendo fatto da regista e coreografo, di questa commovente, molto bella, “cerimonia – festa tradizionale Siciliana”.

A deep passion of mine about photography concerns, in addition to traditional Sicilian festivals, the black and white genre and street photography, which often but not always end up coinciding, so, although I am currently working on other photographic projects, I have given up (temporarily) everything and I immersed myself in the creation of this group of photos, they are heterogeneous, there is no common thread, yet I felt the need to reclaim these passions of mine. The photographs were taken in Taormina, Letojanni, Messina (at the Torre Faro pylon), on the hydrofoil that takes you from Milazzo to the Aeolian islands, on the islands of Lipari and Salina. A good number of these photos were taken with a 35mm Lensbaby on full frame (focus is manual). I photographed a lay friar, Giovanni L.P., he spoke to me about his troubled life, namely the rediscovery of a profound faith, now with the help of an old and worn Bible, he goes around the world preaching the Word of the Lord; I photographed a huge cargo ship, it was crossing the Strait of Messina, when I saw it I was speechless, I don't think I've ever seen such a gigantic ship up close, I had to wait for it to move away a little so I could take it again all of it, with the lenses I was wearing at the time, as it passed by me, all of it just didn't fit...; on the island of Salina, in the Pollara district, I photographed the external patio of "Neruda's house" where some scenes of the film "Il Postino" with Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret, Maria Grazia Cucinotta were filmed; also on the island of Salina I photographed the little black beach of Rinella; the man who "put the dead hand" on her partner was lovingly reprimanded by her, there was complicity between the two of them, she feared that someone might see them...

Una mia profonda passione circa la fotografia riguarda, oltre le feste tradizionali siciliane, il genere bianco e nero e la street photography, esse spesso ma non sempre, finiscono per coincidere, così, pur lavorando attualmente ad altri progetti fotografici, ho mollato (temporaneamente) tutto e mi sono immerso nella realizzazione di questo gruppo di foto, sono eterogenee, non c’è un filo conduttore, eppure sentivo la necessità di riappropriarmi di queste mie passioni. Le fotografie sono state realizzate a Taormina, a Letojanni, a Messina (al Pilone di Torre Faro), sull’aliscafo che da Milazzo porta alle isole Eolie, sulle isole di Lipari e di Salina. Un buon numero di queste foto è stato realizzato con una Lensbaby da 35 mm (su full frame, il fuoco è manuale). Ho fotografato un frate laico, Giovanni L.P., mi ha parlato della sua tribolata vita, pèoi la riscoperta di una profonda fede, ora aiutandosi con una vecchia e logora Bibbia, va in giro per il mondo predicando la Parola del Signore; ho fotografato una enorme nave cargo, stava attraversando lo Stretto di Messina, quando l’ho vista sono rimasto a bocca aperta, non credo di aver mai visto da vicino una nave così gigantesca, ho dovuto aspettare che si allontanasse un po’ per poterla riprendere tutta, con le ottiche che montavo in quel momento, mentre mi passava vicino, tutta proprio non ci entrava…; sull’isola di Salina, in contrada Pollara, ho fotografato il patio esterno della “casa di Neruda” ove furono girate alcune scene del film “Il Postino” con Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret, Maria Grazia Cucinotta; sempre sull’isola di Salina ho fotografato la spiaggetta nera di Rinella; l’uomo che “faceva la mano morta” sulla sua compagna veniva amorevolmente ripreso da lei, c’era complicità tra loro due, lei temeva che qualcuno potesse vederli ….

I present here a “Sicilian Festival”, with images and words, which was held this year in what is a “scattered municipality”, since it is composed of the two hamlets of Mongiuffi and Melia, separated by a valley in which a river flows, close to the more famous Taormina; the festival is celebrated on Easter Monday, this year the festival, which began normally, was interrupted shortly after due to the arrival of the sad news of the Holy Father Francis, who passed away, so the festival was postponed and celebrated on Sunday 27 April. Historically, the news that I report here, briefly, are taken from the book written by the historian, researcher of popular traditions and photographer, Giovanni Curcuruto, title of the work "Monfelia" (ETNA printing house, OCTOBER 2006): this festival, initially called "Festa della Pace" (later indicated as "Festa degli Angeli"), was established by the Marquis Francesco Rao Corvaja in 1830, to try to bring harmony between the two villages, Mongiuffi and Melia, which had disagreed in the past years for trivial reasons. The festival was celebrated until 1843, the year in which the two villages argued again (the two communities argued as if they were stadium fans, one sided with the clergy, the other with the nobles), the festival was then suspended, and was only reinstated in 1929; the celebration when it was established required that forty days before Easter Monday, the two communities would gather in the church of San Sebastiano di Melia, to select eight children, four from Mongiuffi in honor of the Madonna, and four from Melia in honor of the Risen Christ, between ten and fifteen years old, on the day of the celebration they would then be dressed in white clothes and “wings”, embellished with ribbons and bows; the children were instructed to recite a text in Sicilian dialect mixed with Latin phrases, written in 1833 by the priest Giovanni Cuzari. On Easter Monday, the various brotherhoods had a lot to do preparing the ceremony; from the church of San Sebastiano di Melia, a procession of only men came out, the bearers carried the float with the Risen Christ on their shoulders, while from Mongiuffi a procession of only women set out, with their heads covered by a black veil, the float with the the Virgin of Sorrows was carried on their shoulders, a black veil covered her completely, leaving only her face uncovered, (underneath there was a white veil, which would have “appeared” at the moment of the encounter with the Risen Son): the two processions met in Melia (and still meet today), in an area called “’nto chianu di l’Angiuli” (the square of the Angels), in reality now it is little more than a narrow street: what happened in the past, still happens today (except that, the procession with the the Virgin of Sorrows no longer comes from Mongiuffi, but comes from Melia itself), the two processions coming from the two opposite directions, carrying the float with the the Virgin of Sorrows, and the one with the Risen Christ, stop one in front of the other. First there is a particular ceremony, two boys meet with their respective Crucifixes making three bows to each other, the same happens with two girls and then two men, with their banners, finally the highly emotional “Meeting” takes place between the Mother (the black cloak flies away, and the white one appears) with her Risen Son! Finally, hidden until then behind a curtain on a stage, there is the appearance of the children dressed as Angels, who undertake the traditional recitation. The historian, passionate about popular traditions, Giovanni Curcuruto, has always been close to the “little angels” having acted as director and choreographer, of this moving, very beautiful, “traditional Sicilian ceremony-festival”.

Presento qui una “Festa Siciliana”, con immagini e parole, che si è tenuta quest’anno in quello che è un “comune sparso”, poiché composto dalle due borgate di Mongiuffi e Melia, separate da una vallata nella quale scorre un fiume, vicine alla più conosciuta Taormina; la festa viene celebrata il giorno di Pasquetta (o Lunedì dell’Angelo), quest’anno la festa, iniziata normalmente, è stata poco dopo interrotta per l’arrivo della triste notizia del Santo Padre Francesco, venuto a mancare, quindi la festa è stata rinviata e celebrata domenica 27 aprile.
Storicamente le notizie che qui riporto, sinteticamente, sono tratte dal libro scritto dallo storico, ricercatore di tradizioni popolari e, fotografo, Giovanni Curcuruto, titolo dell’opera “Monfelia” (tipografia ETNA, OTTOBRE 2006): questa festa, chiamata inizialmente “Festa della Pace”, (poi indicata come “Festa degli Angeli”), fu istituita dal Marchese Francesco Rao Corvaja nel 1830, per tentare di portare armonia tra i due borghi, Mongiuffi e Melia, entrati in disaccordo negli anni passati per futili motivi, la festa fu celebrata fino al 1843, anno in cui i due borghi litigarono nuovamente, (le due comunità litigarono come se fossero tifoserie di stadio, una parteggiava per il clero, l’altra per i nobili), la festa venne quindi sospesa, e fu ripristinata solamente nel 1929; la festa quando venne istituita prevedeva che quaranta giorni prima del Lunedì di Pasqua, le due comunità si riunissero nella chiesa di San Sebastiano di Melia, per selezionare otto ragazzini, quattro di Mongiuffi in in onore della Madonna, e quattro di Melia in onore del Cristo Risorto, tra i dieci ed i quindici anni, il giorno della celebrazione sarebbero poi stati vestiti con abiti ed “ali” di colore bianco, impreziositi con nastri e fiocchetti; i ragazzini venivano istruiti a recitare un testo in dialetto siciliano misto a frasi in latino, scritto nel 1833 dal sacerdote Giovanni Cuzari. c’è una particolare cerimonia, due ragazzi si incontrano coi rispettivi Crocefissi facendosi l’un l’altro tre inchini, lo stesso accade con due ragazze e poi due uomini, con i loro stendardi, infine avviene “l’Incontro” altamente emozionante tra la Madre (vola via il mantello nero, ed appare quello bianco) col suo Figlio Risorto! Infine, nascosti fino ad allora dietro una tenda su di un palco, c’è l’apparizione dei ragazzini vestiti da Angeli, che intraprendono la recita tradizionale. Lo storico, appassionato di tradizioni popolari, Giovanni Curcuruto, è stato sempre accanto agli “angioletti” avendo fatto da regista e coreografo, di questa commovente, molto bella, “cerimonia – festa tradizionale Siciliana”.

St. Paul the Apostle is a very revered saint in the Sicilian town of Palazzolo Acreide, the feast in his honor is celebrated on two occasions (very important periods if referring to peasant civilization), on 29 June (the day I took this photo story this year 2025) date of his martyrdom, and January 25, the date of his conversion to Christianity. The "summer party" of June 29, begins with a particular collection of donut-shaped bread (in Sicilian called "cuddura"), donated by the villagers and collected on a cart, this is the "round of bread", these loaves (called "di San Paolo") have decorations that recall snakes: the reference is always to San Paolo, considered the protector from the poisonous bites of vipers, this is the ancestral legacy of an ancient peasant civilization, the wheat harvest period that coincides with the feast, it makes working in sunburnt fields particularly dangerous; once there were characters to whom supernatural gifts were attributed, they were called "ciarauli", capable of protecting from the venomous bites of the viper (This year, a very nice man of Palazzolo Acreide, who was also present last year, was present at the feast to recall these ancient figures. Instead of little snakes, as was once the custom, he had with him a very calm python, also because it was full). During the procession we witness the rite of children who, often completely naked, are taken by their parents by the expert hands of two devotees present on the float, they are thus placed in front of St. Paul to ask for his intercession and protection, sometimes these children are adorned with paper money, in fact, the donation of money is part of the rites that accompany the procession. Among these rites is the vow of the "bare shoulder" made by devout bearers, and that of women who walk barefoot by vow. The procession with the two floats then arrives, as a sign of devotion, in the church of the Annunziata.
San Paolo Apostolo è un santo molto venerato nel paese siciliano di Palazzolo Acreide, la festa in suo onore viene celebrata in due occasioni (periodi molto importanti se riferiti alla civiltà contadina), il 29 giugno (giorno in cui ho realizzato quest’anno 2025 questo foto-racconto) data del suo martirio, ed il 25 gennaio, data della sua conversione al cristianesimo. La “festa estiva” del 29 giugno, inizia con una particolare raccolta di pane a forma di ciambella (in siciliano detta “cuddura”), donato dai paesani e raccolto su di un carretto, questo è il “giro del pane”, questi pani (detti “di San Paolo”) presentano delle decorazioni che richiamano i serpenti: il riferimento è sempre a San Paolo, ritenuto il protettore dai morsi velenosi delle vipere, questo è il retaggio ancestrale di un’antica civiltà contadina, il periodo della mietitura che coincide con la festa, rende particolarmente pericoloso il lavoro nei campi arsi dal sole; una volta esistevano dei personaggi a cui si attribuivano doti sovrannaturali, erano chiamati “ciarauli”, capaci di proteggere dai morsi velenosi della vipera (quest’anno era presente nella festa, a rievocare queste antiche figure, un simpaticissimo Palazzolese, presente anche l'anno scorso, che al posto delle bisce, come si usava una volta, aveva con se un docilissimo pitone, anche perchè satollo). La processione prende il nome di “sciuta”, con riferimento alla “uscita” dalla basilica di San Paolo di due vare, dapprima esce la vara con la reliquia del santo, portata in spalla dai devoti, subito dopo, alle 13,00 in punto avviene l’uscita della vara con l’antica statua di San Paolo che stringe una spada in pugno (l’iconografia lo rappresenta con la spada per due motivi, egli fu decapitato con un colpo di spada, e perché egli, riferendosi alla parola di Dio, la definiva più efficace e più tagliente di una spada a doppia lama), a questo punto iniziano tra i più spettacolari e suggestivi giochi pirotecnici che io che io abbia mai visto, si assiste ad una fantasmagorica e caleidoscopica esplosione di colori realizzati con enormi coriandoli colorati e con dei nastri colorati lunghi circa due metri chiamati ‘nzareddi, che richiamano la forma ed il movimento dei serpenti. Durante la processione si assiste al rito dei bambini che, molto spesso completamente nudi, vengono presi dai genitori dalle esperte mani di due devoti presenti sulla vara, vengono così messi al cospetto di San Paolo a chiederne la sua intercessione e protezione, a volte questi bimbi sono adornati con della carta moneta, infatti la donazione di denaro fa parte dei riti che accompagnano la processione. Tra questi riti c’è il voto della “spalla nuda” fatto dai devoti portatori, e quello delle donne che per voto camminano scalze. La processione con le due vare giunge poi, in segno di devozione, nella chiesa dell’Annunziata.

One of several Bucharest churches moved from their original location during the communist dictatorship and dumped behind new highrise buildings.
After the devastating earthquake of 1977 Nicolae Ceausescu realized that he can remodel Bucharest on a large scale. An area larger than historic Venice [250 hectares] was demolished to make way for a new administrative center. In total 27 orthodox churches, 6 synagogues and 3 protestant churches were demolished all over the town during that time. After a unique, brave and singular protest of several historians only 7 historically important churches were "saved" by relocation behind large buildings, to make them "invisible". The translation was technically done by first pouring a reenforced concrete foundation underneath the church and then slowly moving it to the new location on rails.
People used to joke back then that Bucharest was the only city in the world to have its own unique traffic sign: CAUTION, CROSSING CHURCHES [like the deer crossing sign]

I'm sharing here on Flickr a (long) series of photos, taken in early August this year, during a short vacation in Calabria, at a holiday village located near a beach I've been frequenting with my family for several years now, during our short summer vacations. The setting, however, is very different from the beaches I normally frequent near my home in Taormina, with very crowded beaches and a sea that is also very popular with yachtsmen of all kinds. In this part of Calabria, the beaches are rarely crowded (except on weekends, but not too much). In short, it's a sort of almost tropical paradise, with very little yachting. Adjacent to the holiday village is a kitesurfing club, very popular with enthusiasts of this wonderful sport, which thrives on the sea and the wind. I photographed an 84-year-old kitesurfer, whose mettle is steely, still giving athletes much younger than him a run for their money. A friendly and sweet horsewoman from the nearby stables arrived unexpectedly in the beach village, accompanied by her father, both astride two magnificent colts. This created a moment of joy and curiosity for both the parents and their little ones, who were likely seeing these magnificent and docile animals up close and personal for the first time. Unexpectedly, a very special party broke out on the beach. Seeing it made me feel like I was no longer in Calabria, but rather transported to the other side of the globe, to the Hindu festival called Holi, with its throwing of colored powders (in India, this festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, as well as symbolizing the victory of good over evil). I know it thanks to the evocative photographs often published on various photography websites.
I'll end by briefly mentioning the photographic technique I've often used in my photographs. I've created "blur" photographs—blurry, slightly blurry, and unfocused—at the time of shooting, simply by lengthening the exposure time and then also using some panning. Finally, I'd like to thank the sweet and beautiful models who posed for me, allowing me to further enhance this (long-winded) photographic story.

Propongo qui su Flickr, una (lunga) serie di foto, realizzate nei primi giorni di Agosto di quest’anno, durante una mia breve vacanza in Calabria, in un villaggio vacanze sito a ridosso di una spiaggia che oramai frequento insieme alla mia famiglia, durante le nostre brevi vacanze estive, da diversi anni, fotografie quindi aventi per tema la “beach photography”; purtuttavia l’ambientazione è molto diversa rispetto alle spiagge che frequento normalmente vicino casa mia a Taormina, con spiagge molto affollate, il mare anch’esso super frequentato da diportismo nautico di ogni tipo, in questa zona della Calabria le spiagge sono invece poco frequentate (tranne il fine settimana, ma neanche troppo), insomma, una specie di Paradiso quasi tropicale, con pochissime imbarcazioni. Adiacente al villaggio vacanze c’è un club di Kitesurf, molto frequentato da appassionati di questo meraviglioso sport, sport che si nutre di mare e di vento. Ho fotografato un kitesurfer di 84 anni, la cui tempra è di acciaio, che dà ancora molto filo da torcere ad atleti molto più giovani di lui. Nel villaggio a sorpresa è arrivata una simpatica e dolce cavallerizza proveniente dal vicino maneggio, con lei anche il suo papà, entrambi a cavallo di due magnifici puledri, creando un momento di allegria e curiosità, sia per i genitori, che per i loro piccoli, per i quali, molto probabilmente, era la prima volta che potevano vedere da vicino, e poterli anche toccare, questi magnifici e docili animali. A sorpresa, inaspettatamente, sulla spiaggia ha preso vita un party molto particolare, nel vederlo mi sembrava di non essere più in Calabria, ma di essere stato proiettato dall’altro lato del globo, in quella festa Indù chiamata Holi, con lancio di polveri colorate (in India questa festa segna la fine dell'inverno e l'arrivo della primavera, oltre a simboleggiare la vittoria del bene sul male), festa che conosco grazie a fotografie molto suggestive spesso pubblicate sui vari siti fotografici.
Termino accennando brevemente alla tecnica fotografica che ho spesso adottato nel realizzare le mie fotografie, ho realizzato al momento dello scatto fotografie del tipo “blur”, cioè mosse, un po’ confuse, non incise, ottenute allungando i tempi di esposizione. Infine ringrazio le dolcissime e belle modelle, che hanno voluto posare per me, consentendomi di rendere più grazioso questo mio (prolisso) racconto fotografico.

Being a fan of the Lennon Sisters, I wanted to get this book as part of my collection. I really enjoyed reading it.
I am an adult, but I enjoy reading children's books sometimes because of the good values that underline many themes in these books. I found this one to bring out these good values as well.
As you can figure from the title of the book, [??] this book focuses on Janet and her last summer vacation before "growing up".
The other family members are just referenced briefly at the beginning of the book.
Good values dealing with diversity, consideration of others, friendship, and thoughtfulness are shown throughout the readings of this book.
If you enjoy children's books as I do, are a Lennon Sisters fan, or are a child yourself, I think you will enjoy this book as much as I have.
I also have bought the other Lennon Sisters books in the series, but I have not read them yet. I will write reviews on them as I complete them.

What was Lassie up to when she wasn't fishing Timmy out of that well? Where did Annette go when she wasn't wearing her mouse ears, and did the Lennon Sisters ever get a day off from the Lawrence Welk Show?
The answers to such burning questions came courtesy of Whitman Publishing of Racine, Wis. During the 1950s and 60s, Whitman's Authorized TV Editions filled the bookshelves (and filled in the imagination gaps) of many young fans.
Couldn't wait a week for the next episode of Lassie? Well, you could probably wheedle Mom or Dad into springing for Whitman's Lassie and the Secret of the Summer. (Spoiler alert, Lassie's secret has her finding a valuable stash of old recordings).
Pining for more of The Mickey Mouse Club? Curl up with Annette as she puts on her Nancy Drew detecting hat for Annette and the Mystery at Smuggler's Cove.
And oh, those Lennons! With a hand-drawn map, they discover The Secret of Holiday Island and reunite a shipwrecked boy with his long-lost father.
If the storylines sound familiar, it's because they're relatively interchangeable with the type of stories found in other popular Whitman book series (Donna Parker, Trixie Belden, The Bobbsey Twins).
The difference is that the TV editions featured TV stars. And the more popular the star, the better the chances of a continuing series (Annette made her mystery-solving way to such locales as Moonstone Bay and Medicine Wheel).
At just under $2, your folks could justify the cost. After all, these were books. You weren't sitting there staring at the TV. You were reading. (Even if you were reading about TV).
Celebrities sell, a fact that Whitman discovered early on. Beginning in 1932, its Big Little Books put comic strip favorites (Dick Tracy, Popeye), between the pages of tiny books just four inches high. Simple stories and black-and-white illustrations made these must-haves for the younger set.
Later in the 30s, Whitman branched out into standard-sized hardcovers with pop culture tie-ins.
Many still celebrated funny paper favorites (Smilin' Jack and the Daredevil Girl Pilot, Blondie and Dagwood's Secret Service).
Others brought real-life movie stars into the mix (Betty Grable and the House with the Iron Shutters, Ginger Rogers and the Riddle of the Scarlet Cloak).
Each Whitman book promised the newest, up-to-the-minute mystery and adventure stories for girls and boys, featuring your favorite characters!
When TV surged into prominence in the 1950s, Whitman was ready. Exciting, breezy, 200-page tales were headlined by faces who were tops on the tube, including Fury, The Real McCoys, and Gene Autry. (Autry had been the subject of past Whitman books, but 1951's Gene Autry and the Badmen of Broken Bow was the company's first official TV tie-in. Gene's TV show premiered in mid-1950.)
Noting Whitman's success, Walt Disney visited the library as well, with books based on popular Disney flicks such as The Shaggy Dog.
That trend hearkened back to the 1940s, with books-into-movies re-releases of such box office draws as Now, Voyager.
Dr. Kildare, Leave It To Beaver, Annie Oakley, Maverick--How did you know when your TV show was really a hit?
Why, when you'd made it onto the glossy cover of a Whitman book. Just about 100 official Whitman TV tie-ins were published.
The series ended in 1975, with a half-dozen volumes starring The Waltons.
Today, collectors can find Whitman books at bargain prices. Almost all are under $10, with the exception of such rarities as 1968's Mission to Horatius, the first original story based on the Star Trek series.
Patience is required to find Whitmans in collectible condition. The laminated covers have a tendency to peel (as do the spines). The line-drawn endpaper illustrations often brought out the crayon-obsessed among young readers.
But for those of a certain age wanting to relive a certain age, Whitman TV books were, as promised, 'delightful, intriguing, never to be forgotten.'
Donald-Brian Johnson is the co-author of numerous books on design and collectibles, including Postwar Pop, a collection of his columns. His favorite Whitman book is Fury.

British film actress Anne Heywood (1931) started her career as Miss Great Britain in 1950. In the mid-1950s, she began to play supporting roles as the ‘nice girl’ for Rank. Gradually she evolved into a leading lady, best known for her dramatic roles in the pioneer lesbian drama The Fox (1967) and La monaca di Monza/The Nun of Monza (1969).
Anne Heywood was born as Violet Joan Pretty in Handsworth (now Birmingham), England in 1932. She was one of the seven children. Her father, Harold Pretty, was a former orchestral violinist, turned factory worker. Her mother died when Violet was just 13. She had to leave school at fourteen to look after the younger members of her family. This frustrated her wish to go to art school. Instead, she joined in 1947 the Highbury Little Theatre in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham and stayed there for two years gaining stage experience. At only 17, the knockout brunette won the National Bathing Beauty Contest in 1950, later renamed as the Miss Great Britain contest. Her prizes were £1000 and a silver rose bowl. The following year she made her film debut as a beauty contestant in the comedy Lady Godiva Rides Again (1951, Frank Launder) with Dennis Price. That year she also became the personal assistant of Carroll Levis, a talent spotter on a radio show, which toured along the main theatres of Great Britain. She stayed at the show for four years and even appeared three times with the show on television. Heywood attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. While playing the principal boy in Aladdin at the Chelsea Palace, she was spotted by a talent scout for the Rank Organization. In 1956, she signed a seven-year contract and her name was changed to Anne Heywood. According to Glamour Girls at the Silver Screen, she later recalled: “I always hated my name. It sounded unreal.” For Rank, she appeared in supporting roles as the 'nice girl'. Her films included the comedy Doctor at Large (1957, Ralph Thomas) starring Dirk Bogarde, the crime drama Violent Playground (1958, Basil Dearden) opposite Stanley Baxter, and the adventure Dangerous Exile (1958, Brian Desmond Hurst) starring Louis Jourdan. Gradually Heywood evolved into a leading lady.
Anne Heywood met in 1959 producer Raymond Stross at the set of A Terrible Beauty/The Night Fighters (1960, Tay Garnett) starring Robert Mitchum. A year later they married in Zurich, Switzerland. He was 16 years her senior. Stross started to reshape her image with such sexy, offbeat dramas as The Very Edge (1963, Cyril Frankel) with Richard Todd, and 90 Degrees in the Shade (1965, Jiri Weiss). At the Berlin Film Festival, the latter won the International Critics' Prize. Her breakthrough role was Ellen March in The Fox (1967, Mark Rydell), co-starring Sandy Dennis. This film adaptation of a D. H. Lawrence novel caused controversy at the time due to its lesbian theme. Gary Brumburgh at IMDb on Heywood and Dennis: “the two were quite believable as an unhappy, isolated couple whose relationship is irreparably shattered by the appearance of a handsome stranger (Keir Dullea). At the height of the movie's publicity, Playboy magazine revealed a ‘pictorial essay’ just prior to its 1967 release with Anne in a nude and auto-erotic spread.” Heywood was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. The Fox, a Canadian film, did win the ‘Best Foreign Film Golden Globe. Heywood did not. The Fox is now respected as a pioneer, ground-breaking lesbian film. Heywood’s next film was La monaca di Monza/The Nun of Monza (1969, Eriprando Visconti) with Hardy Krüger. This controversial drama tells the tale of how a 17th-century Italian nun's long-repressed sexual passion is awakened when a handsome nobleman rapes and impregnates her. Later she is captured and captured and given a horrible life sentence. This ‘true story’ of Sister Virginia, the nun of Monza, was shot in a fifteenth-century castle 27 miles north of Rome and in medieval churches in Lombardy, where the original story took place. The nasty exploitative drama grossed more than $1,000,000 in its initial run in Italy and paid back its negative cost in three weeks. The box office success lead to an Italian subgenre of ‘nunsploitation’ films in the 1970s.
Anne Heywood and Raymond Stross moved from Switzerland to the US. Despite the Golden Globe nomination and the Playboy spread, Heywood never endeared herself to American filmgoers. Such Hollywood productions as the caper Midas Run (1969, Alf Kjellin) with Fred Astaire, and the action drama The Chairman (1969, J. Lee Thompson) with Gregory Peck were no successes. She seemed drawn toward highly troubled, flawed characters, like in I Want What I Want (1972, John Dexter) and Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff (1979, Marvin J. Chomsky). In the 1970s, she also appeared in several Italian films, including the Giallo L'assassino... è al telefono/The Killer Is on the Phone (1972, Alberto De Martino) with Telly Savalas and Willeke van Ammelrooy, the nunsploitation Le monache di Sant'Arcangelo/The Nun & The Devil (1973, Domenico Paolella) with Ornella Muti, and the romantic drama La prima volta sull'erba/Love Under the Elms (1975, Gianluigi Calderone). Her career declined in the 1980s. Her final feature was What Waits Below (1985, Don Sharp. Hal Erickson at IMDb: “a goofy fantasy filmed on the cheap by the ever-canny Don Sharp. The story involves a team of anthropologists and military men who busy themselves exploring a serpentine system of subterranean caves. They discover of a lost race of Albinos, which wreaks havoc upon the surface-dwelling humans. The British actor Robert Powell and Timothy Bottoms star. According to some sources, Sharp and co. approached the production with extreme carelessness; thanks to an unfortunate accident, a large percentage of the cast and crew were almost fatally poisoned by carbon monoxide in the caves where the movie was filmed.” Her penultimate role was as Manon Brevard Marcel on the American TV series The Equalizer (1988), starring Edward Woodward. In 1988 her husband Raymond Stross died. The following year she appeared in a final television movie, Memories of Manon (1989, Tony Wharmby) based on the character from The Equalizer. After this role, she retired. She remarried to George Danzig Druke, a former New York Assistant Attorney General. Anne Heywood Druke resides with her husband in Beverly Hills, USA. She has one son, Mark (1963), with Raymond Stross.

On June 11, 1982; E.T. Extra Terrestrial was released. This film is arguably one of the greatest science fiction films of the 20th century. As a result of its success, E.T. Extra Terrestrial was nominated for nine Oscars, winning four.
Our lone Trooper, with the assistance of Yoda, thought he would do his best to reenact one of the most iconic film images from the eighties. Way to go!
I should note that once again I think I prefer Boba's Alternative to the original image, however, I am photographing 365 Days of Clones and not 365 Days of Boba. The Clone Trooper image won once again by default.

Canadian-born French pop superstar Mylène Farmer (1961) is a singer, songwriter, writer, entrepreneur and occasional film actress. She holds the record for the most number-one hits in the French charts and has sold more than 30 million records.
Mylène Farmer was born Mylène Jeanne Gautier in Pierrefonds (Wikipedia) or Montréal (IMDb), Quebec in 1961. Her parents moved from France to Canada in the late 1950s as Farmer's father, Max, pursued an engineering contract on a dam. Her family moved back to France when she was eight, settling in the Parisian suburb of Ville-d'Avray. At the age of 17, Farmer discovered acting and she took a three-year course at the Cours Florent, a drama school in Paris. Changing her name to Mylène Farmer as a tribute to her idol, 1930s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, she began to earn a living as a model acting in several TV ads. In 1984, Farmer met Laurent Boutonnat, a young film student, after answering a newspaper ad looking for an actress for a small film he was working on. Farmer and Boutonnat became friends and forged a creative partnership, writing and producing the music. He wrote her first song, 'Maman a tort', about a young girl's love for her female nurse. It became a mild success in March 1984. Boutonnat, whose ambition was to become a film director, would be the force behind Mylène’s videos and he wrote the music of her songs. Farmer would write the lyrics. In the following years, Farmer gained fame with songs featuring controversial yet poetic lyrics and explicit music videos: 'Libertine', the lead single of her first album, was released in March 1986 and set the tone for Farmer's musical style. The sensual, romantic lyrics were inspired by 19th century literature. As for the video, which has a running time of over 10 minutes, Boutonnat was inspired by the film Barry Lyndon (Stanley Kubrick, 1975) and the novels by Marquis de Sade, thus giving the video a cinematic style. Farmer, lit by candlelights, is shrouded in mystery and sexual ambiguity. The video contained the first full frontal nudity appearance by a singer on a major music video. In 1988, Boutonnat and Farmer started to work on her follow-up album, 'Ainsi soit je....' This darker and more sexually ambigious album, features songs inspired by Charles Baudelaire and Edgar Allan Poe. The album sold 1.8 million copies and the song 'Pourvu qu'elles soient douces', containing hints of sodomy; became Farmer’s first #1 hit.
Her third album, 'L'Autre...' (1991), and the single 'Désenchantée' made Mylène Farmer a superstar in France. The lyrics approached a larger scope of subjects than before such as religion ('Agnus Dei'), politics ('Désenchantée') and press criticism ('Je t'aime mélancolie'). 'Désenchantée' spent 9 weeks atop of the French chart and became one of the best selling French singles of all time. It was also a hit in Belgium, Canada, Austria and the Netherlands. It was accompanied by a video in which Mylène plays a rebelling prisoner in a concentration camp-like facility. Another successful song of the album, 'Beyond My Control' had a blood-and-sex-charged video that was banned from airplay. The success of the singles helped their parent album sell close to 2 million copies in France alone. In 1991 a disturbed man who had been stalking Farmer entered the Polydor Records headquarters in Paris, held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to Farmer, and killed the receptionist. Following this occurrence, Farmer shunned media attention and left France to live in Los Angeles for a few weeks. In late 1992, she released the remix album 'Dance Remixes', including the single 'Que mon cœur lâche', dealing with AIDS and sexual relations. The song was accompanied by a video directed by Luc Besson (the first time that a Fatmer video wasn't directed by Boutonnat. In the video Farmer plays an angel sent down to earth by God, to save mankind from itself. God refuses to send Jesus again: "last time it was a disaster”. In the meantime Farmer starred in Giorgino (1994), the feature debut of Laurent Boutonnat. The 3-hour-plus film, shot in English, was a huge critical and commercial flop. Budgeted at 80 million Francs, it was seen by only 60 000 people and recovered only 1% of its budget. The bad reception was particularly hard on Boutonnat, who would not direct again for 13 years. Farmer decided to leave France to take a long break in the USA.
During her time in California, Mylène Farmer started to write her fourth studio album, Anamorphosée. The album was launched by the rock song 'XXL', and a video directed by Marcus Nispel featuring Mylène strapped to the front of a moving train. The single became her first to debut at #1. Anamorphosée debuted at #2 in the album charts and sold half a million copies in 3 months. Another single, the jazzy pop ballad 'California' featured a highly acclaimed video, directed by Abel Ferrara. Her 5th studio album Innamoramento went straight to #2 on the charts. The video for the second single, 'Je te rends ton amour' sparked controversy because of its religious imagery. It was condemned by the Catholic Church and banned by many networks. Later released as a video single, it became the biggest selling video single in France. In late 1999, Farmer embarked on her third concert tour, the Mylenium Tour, which set the record of the highest grossing tour by a non-English speaking artist. In 2000, Farmer and Boutonnat had assembled songs and video ideas they felt appropriate for a younger, new star, Alizée. They wrote and produced Alizée's albums 'Gourmandises' and 'Mes courants électriques'. Alizée's biggest hit, Moi... Lolita reached the top of the charts and she became the most successful French singer that year. In December 2004, Farmer presented the album, Avant que l'ombre... which spent several weeks at #1, selling nearly a million copies. Moby invited her to record a duet with him, a French version of Slipping Away - her 4th #1 single in France. In 2007, Laurent Boutonnat, directed his second feature film, Jacquou le Croquant (2007), featuring Gaspard Ulliel. Farmer recorded the theme song of the film, 'Devant soi', for the end credits. During that period, she also worked on the French version of Luc Besson's animated feature Arthur et les Minimoys/Arthur and the Minimoys (2006), lending her voice to Selenia, the character voiced by Madonna in the international version. She later returned to dub the sequels, Arthur et la vengeance de Maltazard/Arthur 2 – the Revenge of Maltazard (Luc Besson, 2009) and Arthur 3: la guerre des deux mondes/ Arthur 3: The War of the Two Worlds (Luc Besson, 2010). Farmer’s seventh studio album, 'Point de Suture' (2008) contained five #1 singles. Farmer then had a record of nine #1 hits in France, more than any other artist in French music history. In the latter half of 2010, Mylène Farmer hired RedOne, known for his work with Lady Gaga to produce and write the music for the single 'Oui mais... non'. It hit #1 on the French download chart. Considering the decline in music sales, it's her most successful single since 2002. This also makes her the only French singer to have number-one hits in four consecutive decades. The following singles, "Bleu Noir" and "Lonely Lisa", hit the top of the charts too, expanding her record with twelve #1 singles. The album 'Bleu Noir' (2010) was produced by Farmer, RedOne, Moby and Archive. It entered the French album chart at #1 and remained at the top for three consecutive weeks. It was followed by tanother successful album, 'Monkey Me' (2012). In 2015, she released the single 'Stolen Car', a duet with Sting, who originally recorded the song on his 2003 album 'Sacred Love'. The single reached no. 1 on the French and Belgium Wallonia singles chart and on the Billboard's Dance Club Songs. The album 'Interstellaires', including "Stolen Car", was released later in 2015, becoming Farmer's 12th number one album in France. It also reached number one in Belgium Wallonia and number three in Switzerland. In 2017, Farmer signed a new record deal with Sony Music Entertainment, leaving her previous label, Universal. In 2018 followed the album 'Désobéissance' and the No. 1 hit single 'Rolling Stone'.

Beach holidays were born in the 1700s in Great Britain, this social phenomenon was born in which bathers for the first time go to the beaches, certainly not as sunny as those bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, they are fully dressed; this "new fashion" is also encouraged by the belief of English doctors since the beginning of the eighteenth century (starting around 1720), that breathing the brackish sea air and bathing in cold sea water is healthy, invigorates the body and cure lung diseases (conviction even more strengthened by the discovery of oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier in 1778, which led to the greater diffusion and conviction of the theories on the health benefits of sea air, which was thought to be more oxygenated and pure), these theories push many people from Northern Europe suffering from severe lung diseases to spend long periods in southern Europe, often in the south of Italy, this explains why characters with extraordinary qualities come to Taormina to cure their tuberculosis. The photographer baron Wilhelm von Gloeden and the English lady Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan had the seawater brought with their mules from Isola Bella, but while W. Von Gloeden heated the sea water, the English noblewoman Lady Trevelian did not heat it, mindful of the teachings of the English medical school, this will cause her death from bronchopneumonia on 4 October 1907 (see my previous "photographic stories" about Taormina). In fact, "thalassotherapy" was born in Great Britain, together with the social and cultural phenomenon of frequenting bathing beaches (before the beginning of the 18th century, the sea and its beaches were lived, except for reasons of trade and fishing, in a dark and negative way, from the sea often came very serious dangers such as the sudden landings of ferocious pirates, or foreigners carrying very serious diseases could land). Thus the fashion of spending holidays by the sea was born in the English aristocracy and high bourgeoisie of the time, subsequently the habit of going to the sea spread to all levels of society, the railways that were built throughout Great Britain to 'beginning of the nineteenth century, made travel to the ocean accessible even to the lower classes, they too will frequent the seaside resorts, Blackpool becomes the first seaside resort in Great Britain completely frequented by the working classes thanks to the presence of low-cost bathing establishments; the great and definitive boom in seaside tourism will then take place in the 1950s and 1960s. An important photographer, who probably inspired subsequent photographers, was Tony Ray-Jones, who died prematurely in 1972, at the young age of 30, who was trying to create a “photographic memory” of the stereotypes of the English people; the famous photojournalist Martin Parr, who, although inspired by the previous one, differs from it for his way of doing “social satire” with his goal; finally, I would like to mention David Hurn and Simon Roberts, the latter with wider-ranging photographs, with photographs more detached from the individual. In Italy there are numerous photographers (I will mention only a few) who have made in their long career images captured in seaside resorts (generally we speaking of "beach photography" similar to "street photography"), photographs that are often unique in their style, such as that adopted by Franco Fontana, I mention Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (of whom I am honored to have known him personally), and Massimo Vitali, famous photographer (understood by some as "the photographer of the beaches"), especially for his beautiful photographs taken on the beaches (but not only), thanks to the presence of elevated fixed structures as a kind of mezzanine, built specifically in the bathing beaches for the realization of his photographs. This is my introduction to talk about the theme proposed here, that of “beach photography” (with some exceptions for “narrative” reasons), with a series of photographs taken on the beaches surrounding Taormina (Sicily). For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, in addition to capturing the surrounding space, it also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being blurry because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused-out of focus-imprecise-undecided... the Anglo-Saxon term that encapsulates this photographic genre in a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created later, in the post-production phase.

Le vacanze al mare nascono nel ‘700 in Gran Bretagna, nasce questo fenomeno sociale nel quale i bagnanti per la prima volta si recano sulle spiagge, non certo assolate come quelle bagnate dal mar Mediterraneo, sono completamente vestiti; questa “nuova moda” è anche incoraggiata dalla convinzione dei medici inglesi fin dall’inizio del ‘700 (a partire dal 1720 circa), che respirare l’aria salmastra del mare e fare il bagno nell’acqua marina fredda sia salutare, rinvigorisca il corpo e curi le malattie polmonari (convinzione ancor più rafforzata dalla scoperta dell’ossigeno da parte di Antoine Lavoisier nel 1778, che portò alla maggiore diffusione e convinzione delle teorie sui benefici per la salute dell’aria di mare, che si pensava essere più ossigenata e pura), queste teorie spingono molte persone del Nord Europa affette da gravi malattie polmonari a trascorrere dei lunghi periodi nel sud Europa, spesso nel meridione d’Italia, questo spiega perché a Taormina giungono personaggi dalle qualità straordinarie per curare il proprio “mal sottile”, il barone fotografo Wilhelm von Gloeden e la lady inglese Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan si facevano portare coi muli l’acqua di mare proveniente dall’Isola Bella, però mentre W. Von Gloeden riscaldava l’acqua marina, la nobildonna inglese lady Trevelian non la riscaldava, memore degli insegnamenti della scuola medica inglese, questo causerà la sua morte per broncopolmonite il 4 ottobre del 1907 (vedi i miei precedenti “racconti fotografici” su Taormina). Infatti la “talassoterapia” nasce in Gran Bretagna, insieme al fenomeno sociale e culturale della frequentazione dei lidi balneari (prima dell’inizio del ‘700, il mare e le sue spiagge erano vissuti, tranne che per motivi di commercio e di pesca, in maniera oscura e negativa, dal mare spesso provenivano gravissimi pericoli come gli sbarchi improvvisi di feroci pirati, oppure potevano sbarcare stranieri portatori di gravissime malattie). Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate sulle spiagge circostanti Taormina (Sicilia). Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione

I'm sharing here on Flickr a (long) series of photos, taken in early August this year, during a short vacation in Calabria, at a holiday village located near a beach I've been frequenting with my family for several years now, during our short summer vacations. The setting, however, is very different from the beaches I normally frequent near my home in Taormina, with very crowded beaches and a sea that is also very popular with yachtsmen of all kinds. In this part of Calabria, the beaches are rarely crowded (except on weekends, but not too much). In short, it's a sort of almost tropical paradise, with very little yachting. Adjacent to the holiday village is a kitesurfing club, very popular with enthusiasts of this wonderful sport, which thrives on the sea and the wind. I photographed an 84-year-old kitesurfer, whose mettle is steely, still giving athletes much younger than him a run for their money. A friendly and sweet horsewoman from the nearby stables arrived unexpectedly in the beach village, accompanied by her father, both astride two magnificent colts. This created a moment of joy and curiosity for both the parents and their little ones, who were likely seeing these magnificent and docile animals up close and personal for the first time. Unexpectedly, a very special party broke out on the beach. Seeing it made me feel like I was no longer in Calabria, but rather transported to the other side of the globe, to the Hindu festival called Holi, with its throwing of colored powders (in India, this festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, as well as symbolizing the victory of good over evil). I know it thanks to the evocative photographs often published on various photography websites.
I'll end by briefly mentioning the photographic technique I've often used in my photographs. I've created "blur" photographs—blurry, slightly blurry, and unfocused—at the time of shooting, simply by lengthening the exposure time and then also using some panning. Finally, I'd like to thank the sweet and beautiful models who posed for me, allowing me to further enhance this (long-winded) photographic story.

Propongo qui su Flickr, una (lunga) serie di foto, realizzate nei primi giorni di Agosto di quest’anno, durante una mia breve vacanza in Calabria, in un villaggio vacanze sito a ridosso di una spiaggia che oramai frequento insieme alla mia famiglia, durante le nostre brevi vacanze estive, da diversi anni, fotografie quindi aventi per tema la “beach photography”; purtuttavia l’ambientazione è molto diversa rispetto alle spiagge che frequento normalmente vicino casa mia a Taormina, con spiagge molto affollate, il mare anch’esso super frequentato da diportismo nautico di ogni tipo, in questa zona della Calabria le spiagge sono invece poco frequentate (tranne il fine settimana, ma neanche troppo), insomma, una specie di Paradiso quasi tropicale, con pochissime imbarcazioni. Adiacente al villaggio vacanze c’è un club di Kitesurf, molto frequentato da appassionati di questo meraviglioso sport, sport che si nutre di mare e di vento. Ho fotografato un kitesurfer di 84 anni, la cui tempra è di acciaio, che dà ancora molto filo da torcere ad atleti molto più giovani di lui. Nel villaggio a sorpresa è arrivata una simpatica e dolce cavallerizza proveniente dal vicino maneggio, con lei anche il suo papà, entrambi a cavallo di due magnifici puledri, creando un momento di allegria e curiosità, sia per i genitori, che per i loro piccoli, per i quali, molto probabilmente, era la prima volta che potevano vedere da vicino, e poterli anche toccare, questi magnifici e docili animali. A sorpresa, inaspettatamente, sulla spiaggia ha preso vita un party molto particolare, nel vederlo mi sembrava di non essere più in Calabria, ma di essere stato proiettato dall’altro lato del globo, in quella festa Indù chiamata Holi, con lancio di polveri colorate (in India questa festa segna la fine dell'inverno e l'arrivo della primavera, oltre a simboleggiare la vittoria del bene sul male), festa che conosco grazie a fotografie molto suggestive spesso pubblicate sui vari siti fotografici.
Termino accennando brevemente alla tecnica fotografica che ho spesso adottato nel realizzare le mie fotografie, ho realizzato al momento dello scatto fotografie del tipo “blur”, cioè mosse, un po’ confuse, non incise, ottenute allungando i tempi di esposizione. Infine ringrazio le dolcissime e belle modelle, che hanno voluto posare per me, consentendomi di rendere più grazioso questo mio (prolisso) racconto fotografico.

Ho fotografato un kitesurfer di 84 anni, la cui tempra è di acciaio, che dà ancora molto filo da torcere ad atleti molto più giovani di lui. Nel villaggio a sorpresa è arrivata una simpatica e dolce cavallerizza proveniente dal vicino maneggio, con lei anche il suo papà, entrambi a cavallo di due magnifici puledri, creando un momento di allegria e curiosità, sia per i genitori, che per i loro piccoli, per i quali, molto probabilmente, era la prima volta che potevano vedere da vicino, e poterli anche toccare, questi magnifici e docili animali. A sorpresa, inaspettatamente, sulla spiaggia ha preso vita un party molto particolare, nel vederlo mi sembrava di non essere più in Calabria, ma di essere stato proiettato dall’altro lato del globo, in quella festa Indù chiamata Holi, con lancio di polveri colorate (in India questa festa segna la fine dell'inverno e l'arrivo della primavera, oltre a simboleggiare la vittoria del bene sul male), festa che conosco grazie a fotografie molto suggestive spesso pubblicate sui vari siti fotografici.
Termino accennando brevemente alla tecnica fotografica che ho spesso adottato nel realizzare le mie fotografie, ho realizzato al momento dello scatto fotografie del tipo “blur”, cioè mosse, un po’ confuse, non incise, ottenute allungando i tempi di esposizione. Infine ringrazio le dolcissime e belle modelle, che hanno voluto posare per me, consentendomi di rendere più grazioso questo mio (prolisso) racconto fotografico.

A deep passion of mine about photography concerns, in addition to traditional Sicilian festivals, the black and white genre and street photography, which often but not always end up coinciding, so, although I am currently working on other photographic projects, I have given up (temporarily) everything and I immersed myself in the creation of this group of photos, they are heterogeneous, there is no common thread, yet I felt the need to reclaim these passions of mine. The photographs were taken in Taormina, Letojanni, Messina (at the Torre Faro pylon), on the hydrofoil that takes you from Milazzo to the Aeolian islands, on the islands of Lipari and Salina. A good number of these photos were taken with a 35mm Lensbaby on full frame (focus is manual). I photographed a lay friar, Giovanni L.P., he spoke to me about his troubled life, namely the rediscovery of a profound faith, now with the help of an old and worn Bible, he goes around the world preaching the Word of the Lord; I photographed a huge cargo ship, it was crossing the Strait of Messina, when I saw it I was speechless, I don't think I've ever seen such a gigantic ship up close, I had to wait for it to move away a little so I could take it again all of it, with the lenses I was wearing at the time, as it passed by me, all of it just didn't fit...; on the island of Salina, in the Pollara district, I photographed the external patio of "Neruda's house" where some scenes of the film "Il Postino" with Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret, Maria Grazia Cucinotta were filmed; also on the island of Salina I photographed the little black beach of Rinella; the man who "put the dead hand" on her partner was lovingly reprimanded by her, there was complicity between the two of them, she feared that someone might see them...

Una mia profonda passione circa la fotografia riguarda, oltre le feste tradizionali siciliane, il genere bianco e nero e la street photography, esse spesso ma non sempre, finiscono per coincidere, così, pur lavorando attualmente ad altri progetti fotografici, ho mollato (temporaneamente) tutto e mi sono immerso nella realizzazione di questo gruppo di foto, sono eterogenee, non c’è un filo conduttore, eppure sentivo la necessità di riappropriarmi di queste mie passioni. Le fotografie sono state realizzate a Taormina, a Letojanni, a Messina (al Pilone di Torre Faro), sull’aliscafo che da Milazzo porta alle isole Eolie, sulle isole di Lipari e di Salina. Un buon numero di queste foto è stato realizzato con una Lensbaby da 35 mm (su full frame, il fuoco è manuale). Ho fotografato un frate laico, Giovanni L.P., mi ha parlato della sua tribolata vita, pèoi la riscoperta di una profonda fede, ora aiutandosi con una vecchia e logora Bibbia, va in giro per il mondo predicando la Parola del Signore; ho fotografato una enorme nave cargo, stava attraversando lo Stretto di Messina, quando l’ho vista sono rimasto a bocca aperta, non credo di aver mai visto da vicino una nave così gigantesca, ho dovuto aspettare che si allontanasse un po’ per poterla riprendere tutta, con le ottiche che montavo in quel momento, mentre mi passava vicino, tutta proprio non ci entrava…; sull’isola di Salina, in contrada Pollara, ho fotografato il patio esterno della “casa di Neruda” ove furono girate alcune scene del film “Il Postino” con Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret, Maria Grazia Cucinotta; sempre sull’isola di Salina ho fotografato la spiaggetta nera di Rinella; l’uomo che “faceva la mano morta” sulla sua compagna veniva amorevolmente ripreso da lei, c’era complicità tra loro due, lei temeva che qualcuno potesse vederli ….

Please meet the gorgeous Anna Wood! I knew I wanted Anna to be a part of my ongoing series photographing actors, not only for her timeless features, but I knew I could count on her to be able to effectively emote. You may have seen her in Mad Men, House of Lies or the movie Chronicle. Anna will also be recurring on the new series Deception on NBC in 2013. And on top of being so talented, she is just a delightful person! She really put her faith in me for this and another yet-to-be-released shot, and I sure appreciated it. :)
So, a little about the photo itself... This is actually going to be the second of a two-photo series that I ended up shooting out of order, but I don't think it will matter much to anyone but me. The inspiration came from a short story by Peter S. Beagle called Salt Wine. Without ruining the story for anyone, it has themes of mermaids and mermen, merchant sailors, love, heartache and loss. I don't remember where I got the idea for pearl tears, but I glued them on with eyelash glue.
I ended up making the big ornament in Anna's hair (using a very pretty Christmas ornament as a base) and creating my own glass mermaid flask by laying my own mermaid drawing (based on some really lovely drawings I found online) over top of the flask, which originally had an eagle on one side and George Washington on the other. Not very nautical or magical. I'm hoping to write up a bit more about this shot and the prop creation for my blog, but it may be a little while. My CFS has taken most of my right arm pain-hostage and negotiations with supplements, medications and other therapies have so far been unsuccessful in obtaining its release. Which means that typing and editing (along with everything else photo-related, such as costume and prop making) is on a frustrating hold, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to write more about this. ;)

The Joychandi Pahar (mountain) where Satyajit Ray shot his famous movie Hirak Rajar Deshey (1980) is also a popular picnic cum tourist spot as well as Rock climbing centre.
After riding some 300-400 odd steps (did not count), one can get to see a spectacular view from the hilltop. There's a temple of Chandimata and Bajrangbali on one of the hilltop.
Nearest rail head is #Adra Junction within #Purulia District.

St. Paul the Apostle is a very revered saint in the Sicilian town of Palazzolo Acreide, the feast in his honor is celebrated on two occasions (very important periods if referring to peasant civilization), on 29 June (the day I took this photo story this year 2025) date of his martyrdom, and January 25, the date of his conversion to Christianity. The "summer party" of June 29, begins with a particular collection of donut-shaped bread (in Sicilian called "cuddura"), donated by the villagers and collected on a cart, this is the "round of bread", these loaves (called "di San Paolo") have decorations that recall snakes: the reference is always to San Paolo, considered the protector from the poisonous bites of vipers, this is the ancestral legacy of an ancient peasant civilization, the wheat harvest period that coincides with the feast, it makes working in sunburnt fields particularly dangerous; once there were characters to whom supernatural gifts were attributed, they were called "ciarauli", capable of protecting from the venomous bites of the viper (This year, a very nice man of Palazzolo Acreide, who was also present last year, was present at the feast to recall these ancient figures. Instead of little snakes, as was once the custom, he had with him a very calm python, also because it was full). Among these rites is the vow of the "bare shoulder" made by devout bearers, and that of women who walk barefoot by vow. The procession with the two floats then arrives, as a sign of devotion, in the church of the Annunziata.
San Paolo Apostolo è un santo molto venerato nel paese siciliano di Palazzolo Acreide, la festa in suo onore viene celebrata in due occasioni (periodi molto importanti se riferiti alla civiltà contadina), il 29 giugno (giorno in cui ho realizzato quest’anno 2025 questo foto-racconto) data del suo martirio, ed il 25 gennaio, data della sua conversione al cristianesimo. La “festa estiva” del 29 giugno, inizia con una particolare raccolta di pane a forma di ciambella (in siciliano detta “cuddura”), donato dai paesani e raccolto su di un carretto, questo è il “giro del pane”, questi pani (detti “di San Paolo”) presentano delle decorazioni che richiamano i serpenti: il riferimento è sempre a San Paolo, ritenuto il protettore dai morsi velenosi delle vipere, questo è il retaggio ancestrale di un’antica civiltà contadina, il periodo della mietitura che coincide con la festa, rende particolarmente pericoloso il lavoro nei campi arsi dal sole; una volta esistevano dei personaggi a cui si attribuivano doti sovrannaturali, erano chiamati “ciarauli”, capaci di proteggere dai morsi velenosi della vipera (quest’anno era presente nella festa, a rievocare queste antiche figure, un simpaticissimo Palazzolese, presente anche l'anno scorso, che al posto delle bisce, come si usava una volta, aveva con se un docilissimo pitone, anche perchè satollo). La processione prende il nome di “sciuta”, con riferimento alla “uscita” dalla basilica di San Paolo di due vare, dapprima esce la vara con la reliquia del santo, portata in spalla dai devoti, subito dopo, alle 13,00 in punto avviene l’uscita della vara con l’antica statua di San Paolo che stringe una spada in pugno (l’iconografia lo rappresenta con la spada per due motivi, egli fu decapitato con un colpo di spada, e perché egli, riferendosi alla parola di Dio, la definiva più efficace e più tagliente di una spada a doppia lama), a questo punto iniziano tra i più spettacolari e suggestivi giochi pirotecnici che io che io abbia mai visto, si assiste ad una fantasmagorica e caleidoscopica esplosione di colori realizzati con enormi coriandoli colorati e con dei nastri colorati lunghi circa due metri chiamati ‘nzareddi, che richiamano la forma ed il movimento dei serpenti. Durante la processione si assiste al rito dei bambini che, molto spesso completamente nudi, vengono presi dai genitori dalle esperte mani di due devoti presenti sulla vara, vengono così messi al cospetto di San Paolo a chiederne la sua intercessione e protezione, a volte questi bimbi sono adornati con della carta moneta, infatti la donazione di denaro fa parte dei riti che accompagnano la processione. Tra questi riti c’è il voto della “spalla nuda” fatto dai devoti portatori, e quello delle donne che per voto camminano scalze. La processione con le due vare giunge poi, in segno di devozione, nella chiesa dell’Annunziata.

Australian-born actor Errol Flynn (1909-1959) achieved fame in Hollywood with his suave, debonair, devil-may-care attitude. He was known for his romantic Swashbuckler roles in films like Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), often co-starring Olivia de Havilland. In 1942, the tall, athletic and exceptionally handsome, Flynn became an American citizen. He developed a reputation for womanising, hard-drinking, and for a time in the 1940s, narcotics abuse. He was linked romantically with Lupe Vélez, Marlene Dietrich, and Dolores del Río, among many others.
Errol Leslie Thomson Flynn was born in a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, in 1909. His father, Theodore, was a lecturer and later professor of biology at the University of Tasmania. His mother was Lily Mary Young. After early schooling in Hobart, from 1923 to 1925 Flynn was educated at the South West London College, a private boarding school in Barnes, London, and in 1926 returned to Australia to attend Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore School) where he was the classmate of a future Australian prime minister, John Gorton. His formal education ended with his expulsion from Shore for theft. After being dismissed from a job as a junior clerk with a Sydney shipping company for pilfering petty cash, he went to Papua New Guinea at the age of eighteen, seeking his fortune in tobacco planting and metals mining. He spent the next five years oscillating between the New Guinea frontier territory and Sydney. In early 1933, Flynn appeared as an amateur actor in the low-budget Australian film In the Wake of the Bounty (Charles Chauvel, 1933), in the lead role of Fletcher Christian. Later that year he returned to Britain to pursue a career in acting and soon secured a job with the Northampton Repertory Company at the town's Royal Theatre, where he worked and received his training as a professional actor for seven months. In 1934 Flynn was dismissed from Northampton Rep. reportedly after he threw a female stage manager down a stairwell. He returned to Warner Brothers' Teddington Studios in Middlesex where he had worked as an extra in the film I Adore You (George King, 1933) before going to Northampton. With his newfound acting skills, he was cast as the lead in Murder at Monte Carlo (Ralph Ince, 1935), now considered a lost film. During its filming, he was spotted by a talent scout for Warner Bros. and Flynn emigrated to the U.S. as a contract actor.
In Hollywood, Errol Flynn was first cast in two insignificant films, but then he got his great chance. He could replace Robert Donat in the title role of Captain Blood (Michael Curtiz, 1935). Flynn's natural athletic talent and good looks rocketed him overnight to international stardom. Over the next six years, he was typecast as a dashing adventurer in The Charge of the Light Brigade (Michael Curtiz, 1936), The Prince and the Pauper (William Keighley, 1937), The Adventures of Robin Hood (Michael Curtiz, William Keighley, 1938; his first Technicolor film), The Dawn Patrol (Edmund Goulding, 1938) with David Niven, Dodge City (Michael Curtiz, 1939), The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (Michael Curtiz, 1939) and The Sea Hawk (Michael Curtiz, 1940). His striking good looks and screen charisma won him millions of fans. Flynn played an integral role in the re-invention of the action-adventure genre. In collaboration with Hollywood's best fight arrangers, Flynn became noted for fast-paced sword fights. He demonstrated an acting range beyond action-adventure roles in light, contemporary social comedies, such as The Perfect Specimen (Michael Curtiz, 1937) and Four's a Crowd (Michael Curtiz, 1938), and melodrama The Sisters (Anatole Litvak, 1938). During this period Flynn published his first book, 'Beam Ends' (1937), an autobiographical account of his sailing experiences around Australia as a youth. He also travelled to Spain, in 1937, as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War. Flynn co-starred with Olivia de Havilland a total of eight times, and together they made the most successful on-screen romantic partnership in Hollywood in the late 1930s-early 1940s in eight films. Flynn's relationship with Bette Davis, his co-star in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (Michael Curtiz, 1939), was quarrelsome. Davis allegedly slapped him across the face far harder than necessary during one scene.
In 1940, at the zenith of his career, Erroll Flynn was voted the fourth most popular star in the US. Flynn became a naturalised American citizen in 1942. As the United States had by then entered the Second World War, he attempted to enlist in the armed services but failed the physical exam due to multiple heart problems and other diseases. This created an image problem for both Flynn, the supposed paragon of male physical prowess, and for Warner Brothers, which continued to cast him in athletic roles, including such patriotic productions as Dive Bomber (Michael Curtiz, 1941), Desperate Journey (Raoul Walsh, 1942) and Objective, Burma! (Raoul Walsh, 1945). His womanizing lifestyle caught up with him in 1942 when two underage girls, Betty Hansen and Peggy Satterlee, accused him of statutory rape at the Bel Air home of Flynn's friend Frederick McEvoy, and onboard Flynn's yacht, respectively. The scandal received immense press attention. Many of Flynn's fans, assuming that his screen persona was a reflection of his actual personality, refused to accept that the charges were true. Flynn was acquitted, but the trial's widespread coverage and lurid overtones permanently damaged his carefully cultivated screen image as an idealised romantic leading player. In 1946, Flynn published an adventure novel, 'Showdown', and earned a reported $184,000. In 1947 he signed a 15-year contract with Warner Bros. for $225,000 per film. After the Second World War, the taste of the American film-going audience changed from European-themed material and the English history-based escapist epics in which Flynn excelled to more gritty, urban realism and film noir, reflecting modern American life. Flynn tried unsuccessfully to make the transition in Uncertain Glory (Raoul Walsh, 1944) with Paul Lukas and Cry Wolf (Peter Godfrey, 1947) with Barbara Stanwyck, and then increasingly passé Westerns such as Silver River (Raoul Walsh, 1948) and Montana (Ray Enright, 1950). Flynn's behaviour became increasingly disruptive during filming; he was released from his contract in 1950 by Jack L. Warner as part of a stable-clearing of 1930s glamour-generation stars. His Hollywood career over at the age of 41, Flynn entered a steep financial and physical decline.
In the 1950s, Errol Flynn became a parody of himself. He lost his savings from the Hollywood years in a series of financial disasters, including The Story of William Tell (Jack Cardiff, 1954) with Waltraut Haas. Aimlessly he sailed around the Western Mediterranean aboard his yacht Zaca. Heavy alcohol abuse left him prematurely aged and overweight. He staved off financial ruin with roles in forgettable productions such as Hello God (William Marshall, 1951), Il maestro di Don Giovanni/Crossed Swords (Milton Krims, 1954) opposite Gina Lollobrigida and King's Rhapsody (Herbert Wilcox, 1955) with Anna Neagle. He performed in such also-ran Hollywood films as Mara Maru (Gordon Douglas, 1952) and Istanbul (Joseph Pevney, 1957) with Cornell Borchers, and made occasional television appearances. As early as 1952 he had been seriously ill with hepatitis resulting in liver damage. In 1956 he presented and sometimes performed in the television anthology series The Errol Flynn Theatre which was filmed in Britain. He enjoyed a brief revival of popularity with The Sun Also Rises (Henry King, 1957); The Big Boodle (Richard Wilson, 1957), filmed in Cuba; Too Much, Too Soon (Art Napoleon, 1958); and The Roots of Heaven (John Huston, 1958) with Juliette Gréco. In these films, he played drunks and washed-out bums and brought a poignancy to his performances that had not been there during his glamorous heydays. He met with Stanley Kubrick to discuss a role in Lolita, but nothing came of it. Flynn went to Cuba in late 1958 to film the self-produced B film Cuban Rebel Girls (Barry Mahon, 1959), where he met Fidel Castro and was initially an enthusiastic supporter of the Cuban Revolution. He wrote a series of newspaper and magazine articles for the New York Journal American and other publications documenting his time in Cuba with Castro. Many of these pieces were lost until 2009 when they were rediscovered in a collection at the University of Texas at Austin's Center for American History. He narrated a short film titled Cuban Story: The Truth About Fidel Castro Revolution (1959), his last known work as an actor. He published his autobiography, My Wicked Wicked Ways. In 1959, Errol Flynn died of a heart attack in Vancouver, Canada. Flynn was married three times. His first wife was actress Lili Damita (1935-1942). They had one son, actor and war correspondent Sean Flynn (1941-1971). Sean and his colleague Dana Stone disappeared in Cambodia in 1970, during the Vietnam War, while both were working as freelance photojournalists for Time magazine. It is generally assumed that they were killed by Khmer Rouge guerrillas. Errol was married a second time to Nora Eddington from 1943 to 1949. They had two daughters, Deirdre (1945) and Rory (1947). His third wife was actress Patrice Wymore from 1950 until his death. They had one daughter, Arnella Roma (1953–1998). In 1980, author Charles Higham published a controversial biography, 'Errol Flynn: The Untold Story', in which he alleged that Flynn was a fascist sympathiser who spied for the Nazis before and during the Second World War and that he was bisexual and had multiple gay affairs. Later Flynn biographers were critical of Higham's allegations and found no evidence to corroborate them.
