Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words 'hydro' or water, and 'angeion' or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water. In French and Flemish: Hortense, Hortensia, like the female name!

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

In most species the flowers are white, but in some species (notably H. macrophylla), they are blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple, depending on the soil they grow in..

I wish you all the very best and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments, likes and faves. Very much appreciated.

Paper: Unryu treated with mc

I finally got to make the hydrangea! Such an interesting fold. The paper was too soft for me to do more levels. Unryu is pretty but dfifficult for me to fold on a small scale.

Hydrangea leaves beginning to lose their rich green color, even as they continue to work at putting on new growth.

Our backyard bush always puts on a beautiful show this time of year.

Hydrangeas are one of my favourite flowers. I love not only the range and shades of colors, but also the fact that they display them all at once on one bush.

This dress will be for sale, I just need to make a nicer petticoat for the set...

Hydrangeas in the garden. It's year two for the the limelight hydrangea, and year three or four for the pink one. This turned out to be a good year of growth for both.

Nice colourful hydrangeas.

Hydrangea (/haɪˈdreɪndʒ(i)ə/; common names hydrangea or hortensia) is a genus of 70-75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea, the Himalayas, and Indonesia) and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Japan, and Korea. Most are shrubs 1 to 3 meters tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (98 ft) by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.

Having been introduced to the Azores, H. macrophylla is now very common, particularly on Faial, which is known as the "blue island" due to the vast number of hydrangeas present on the island.

Species in the related genus Schizophragma, also in Hydrangeaceae, are also often known as hydrangeas. Schizophragma hydrangeoides and Hydrangea petiolaris are both commonly known as climbing hydrangeas.

There are two flower arrangements in hydrangeas. Mophead flowers are large round flowerheads resembling pom-poms or, as the name implies, the head of a mop. In contrast, lacecap flowers bear round, flat flowerheads with a center core of subdued, fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy, sterile flowers. The flowers of some rhododendrons can appear similar to those of some hydrangeas, but Rhododendron (including azalea) is in a different order.

Summer Hydrangea (Pee Gee). Last year a Doe and her fawn walked up to this plant and lovingly consummed 5 of the flower heads. She would bite them off under the flower, look at me with the flower in her mouth and then consume it like a tree shreader.
