There is a common pattern in young wildlife. Without the innate sense of danger they will later develop, the riskier their behavior. (Sounds like some teenagers I might have known.) This helps a photographer trying to photograph them as the more youthful ones will normally come closer to you either on the ground or in the air.
Mature eagles rarely leave the heights of a tree and head toward you as their first response is to fly the opposite direction. But younger ones will often deviate from that pattern and do a fly-by to see if they know you.
Judging from the yellowing presence in the eye of this eagle I would place his age at 3-4 years as his full adult coloring is not quite developed. He flew out of a tree from quite a ways away and did a couple of quick inspecting loops above me and then was off to see if he could snatch something that looked more appetizing.
The apatite grew. My hunger for home would consume and consume.

The subject of this Picture of the Week, a spiral galaxy named NGC 1589, was once the scene of a violent bout of cosmic hunger pangs; as astronomers looked on, a poor, hapless star was torn apart and devoured by the ravenous supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy.
The astronomers are now using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to test this interpretation. Hubble has observed such events before so the scientists are confident that Hubble will be able to provide smoking gun evidence in the form of stellar debris that was ejected during the disruption event.

What Caused the Irish Potato Famine?
The Memorial represents a rural Irish landscape with an abandoned stone cottage, stone walls, fallow potato fields and the flora on the north Connacht wetlands. It is both a metaphor for the Great Irish Famine and a reminder that hunger today is often the result of lack of access to land.
The Irish Hunger Memorial, designed by artist Brian Tolle, contains stones from each of Ireland’s 32 counties.
